Title: Avoid using public wifi for private activities
Post by: DubemIfedigbo001 on June 06, 2024, 03:10:40 AM
Wifi is a technology that uses radio wave for high-speed internet connection which facilitates the transfer and exchange of data over the network. Information shared over a wifi network is very visible over the network. public wifi network, with or without security is only good for general activities and never for private transactions as information sent over such network can be intercepted by attackers or even the provider of the network if they are not reputable sources. Data intercepted can be used for unhealthy purposes.

Using free wifi networks can lead to lots of privacy leaks such as bank account compromising when you log in with your details over such networks, seed phrases and private keys interception and other financial and social media handles attacks. spywares and trojans can be installed and spread through public networks, as soon as attackers captures a device on that network, it can be used as a host to infect other devices connected to same network. You still need strong anti-virus software to stay safe and not get compromised even after using it for general activities.

Most people whose wallets are compromised on web3 are victims of public networks. Personal, Financial and corporate information are stolen by great margin over free networks as a competitor may offer you internet connection, stealing your data in the process, unknown to you that he/she was planted. Do all classified activities over networks you can trust.

I recently bumped on an ad advertising free wifi networks connection all over the world and the level of scam they may be presenting to uniformed and less suspecting individuals prompted me to creating this thread. I checked google play and saw a whole lot of them and this is a warning to you'll that trust blindly whatever you see on google and apple stores, I don't think they scrutinize everything there. lets all stay safe out there

You're not far from the fact Op. Years ago I got connected to a friend WiFi and he asked me if am I aware that I can gain access to someones Privacies if connected on the same WiFi? I said no. I was curious to learn about it but he said no he was not going to reach me otherwise I'd use it to do evil. Hmm. I wonder what made him exceptional on that cautious remark because if he hasn't been on it then I wondered why he had the knowledge knowing that he's not an official security detective detective personell. Then I wondered how many persons he has laured in compromising their private datas. Then I began to feel unsafe from connecting to untrust WiFis knowing that I've interpersonal documents in my devices which could be risky to loose protection if I'm victimized.
The worse of it's that the access would be gained without your notice. Indeed using the public internet provider seems threatening and unsecured.

OP is correct my friend crypto wallet was, drain because of this, she taught its safe since its a hotel wifi little did she know, it will expose everything, no security is safe once you get hack, always use a device that will seperate you from that network, if you are going to a hotel, or best not to use those network for security purpose or never open banks, emails etc, for security reason.

Even public Wi-Fi with a password does not mean encryption takes place within the network nor does it make it safe. It is completely useless against man-in-the-middle attacks. If you are out use your phone's internet instead of public Wi-Fi. Or make an SSH tunnel to your home PC and verify that your PC's fingerprint is correct otherwise, it could be fake. Or like the OP, the easiest way is to avoid doing important stuff on Wi-Fi networks you don't know or can't trust to be completely untapped like open Wi-Fi.

What a loss for your friend and for sure this is devastating event especially it happen unexpectedly.

So for people to avoid such incident then much better for them to read this article since by you can read on how hackers can steal something from you https://www.techradar.com/vpn/ways-hackers-can-steal-your-data-on-public-wi-fi

For this we should avoid using any public WIFI especially if it comes to unknown sources. Don't get tempted when we see someone didn't put a password on their WIFI since provably its just a trap made by those hackers who want to catch and stole something from their victim.

That's really sad, actually most people think that using an unknown wifi is not going to affect them in anyway, without knowing that scammers has different strategies/tactics that they use to achieve whatever they want. obviously scammers is really making everywhere not to be conducive for people anymore, this is why we also need to be careful in all aspects because they're using different method just to gain access towards our assets and other things, that is why we need to be security conscious so as to avoid being a victim to them.

I think that someone is supposed to avoid a public WiFi is someone who knows the nature of it's business, if you keep people's funds and have something that is important in your folders and emails that you don't want any person to know, that's only ways you can avoid using a public Internet, its easier for someone to penetrate into your document through internet you hook up to, my Facebook has been hacked before through hotspot of handsets, so I know very well that investing in cryptocurrency, using a public WiFi will not make someone to steal your bitcoin you invest, but what I know is that using WiFi to access some websites that's is not strong it can be easily be hacked.

No matter how much protection you put in place, your device will still have a chance of being hacked, but overall it's best to be prepared to minimize the chances of getting hacked. Everyone has very important information on their personal devices that hackers can easily steal without your knowledge. Yes, if you use an public WiFi network your phone will be at risk of being hacked. Sometimes hackers set up fake WiFi networks that can access your device's data. It is because of our little carelessness that we give hackers an opportunity. Caution should be exercised when connecting to public WiFi networks.

Um, rather common knowledge...
Public WiFi being insecure has been known ever since WiFi was invented in 1997.... At best it is only marginally more secure than Bluetooth which has horrible security.

Even having either on your device setup to not broadcast their SSID only means they are not identified. They are however still broadcasting that a connection exists and the device is still seen by other users, just reported as 'unknown'.

Yes it's true that many things like this happen as many felt to enjoy any public wifi because it's free nothing is free there is a popular saying that free things do Purge and a short cut is always a wrong cut. One with good asset don't need to engage on mist if this public sharing of data device no matter how secure their security could be public always remain public it can't be compare to private where one take proper care to ensure security is hundred percent. To be free from mist of the scammers avoidance of using most public wifi is very necessary as it could be the best solution.

I always avoid connecting to public wifi or any wifi that I don't personally know the owner.
It is always better to be safe than sorry, specially if you are using your phone for any transaction or it have any access to your private accounts.

Using public wifi's will make you the victim of "man-in-the-middle" attacks.

The goal of an attack is to steal personal information, such as login credentials, account details and credit card numbers. Targets are typically the users of financial applications, SaaS businesses, e-commerce sites and other websites where logging in is required.

You'll never know if that public wifi you're connecting is from an hacker that's trying to do this attack to anybody that will connect to them.

That's why I don't connect to any public wifis anymore unless I have my spare phone, my old phone and just want to watch some entertaining videos on youtube. With this, I know that I am doing but for everyone, still it's best not to connect on any on them.

I know most of us here hold our coins or tokens in wallets situated in our mobile phones. This is why this is a very important issue to tackle. There are ways to ensure that you are safe from any kind of hacks caused by interception through WiFi.

as much as possible, do not connect to public WiFis
Some hackers can name their WiFis unsuspecting names and might even imitate names of public WiFis which you might be familiar with. Once you connect to them, they can now gain access to your phone.

use VPN
Through the use of VPN, your data will be encrypted. So even if you use public WiFi, they will have a harder time trying to decipher the date that is going between you and the vpn server.

do not do anything important while connected to the public WiFi
Logging to accounts whether that is social media accounts or wallets or bank accounts, never open it while connected to a public WiFi. They can easily gather these sensitive information from you just because you are connected to a public WiFi.

I think it is better not to use wifi in public places because your privacy is not maintained there most of the time. There are many places where if you connect to wifi they steal your personal data. And they try to use them later. So I think that it is better not to use wifi in public places.

many people take it for granted that when they connect to public wifi it will be safe and there is nothing to worry about, even though they don't understand that wifi providers can know what they visit or how they use the network.  sometimes there are even hackers who deliberately spread free wifi just to get whatever the user accesses and inputs.  and because of this it is important for users to be able to understand their security and privacy when on a public network and not connect to a public network carelessly.

Public Wi-Fis are more prone to scams If you use public Wi-Fi, one thing to keep in mind is protecting your personal data from cybercriminals. A hacker can set up a system like Fake Wi-Fi in public Wi-Fi zones to steal your information. In this way, you can give away all their personal information to hackers. And one of the reasons for this is joining the wrong network.

I agree that connecting to public wifi is a concern for your security of your device but it can be minimized if you simply connect through VPN and data and device can be intercepted by the attacker but it not very common attack. The most important thing is that they are lurking for your data and coming at you with some social engineering attacks so no important activities via public wifi.

Well I do not ever use public wifi for private things. If I am going to be on the public wifi it is for me to only send some text messages. This or to make a phone call but not for anything that has something to do with crypto.

It has been called so many times before from prominent members here to not tolerate or to force us not to use or connect to public wifi as this is not safe and this is vulnerable to any attacks .
we might be compromised and may at risk from using this .

maybe you can access public wifi bit from our separate devices in which our important dats are not in the same mobile.

Using free wifi networks can lead to lots of privacy leaks such as bank account compromising when you log in with your details over such networks, seed phrases and private keys interception
Normal people do not share seed phrases and private keys online, with or without free WiFi. I am currently in a hotel on public WiFi. My private keys are not leaving my laptop.

Hoping that you will not encounter any bad experience of using public or free wifi since there are also some
issues happened in the past and many of our intelligent members here knows how bad and non secure using free
wifi but good luck mate.

I agree, it's better not to use them at all even you're going to use a VPN, I wouldn't dare to do that even if I've got a paid subscription with any of them or with the most trusted one.

We are normal people but you'll never know how a newbie can do such. Leaving their keys on their laptops and available on their desktop interface with a note on it as their "private key".

You'll never believe what a newbie can do because I've been there and done that.

I would suggest you always use a vpn. This way you can also stay private and anonymous. On top of that as you mentioned I would also recommend a good anti-virus software.

good idea , yeah using VPN will at least save us from being victims of those abusers and bad people in internet . but about anti virus?  not sure if we are just that safe with all the hackers way nowadays.

this is why when saving a private key , i add some characters in the front and the back at least each have 5 letters and numbers combined  so the hackers might find it hard to check what is the combination .

Of course, public networks are fraught with the danger of personal information leakage, but everything is not as scary as it seems.

Of course, public networks are fraught with the danger of personal information leakage, but everything is not as scary as it seems.
that is if you have no much  funds or connection to your mobile and gadgets.

It has been told many times here and actually there are threads created for time now about
not to use Free Wifi because possibilities that your accounts and gadgets to be compromised
because that has been proven over the years ,but not for me as I have back up phones to enjoy
free wife but just to browse and watch movies and sometimes to play games , but never
that I use my Personal mobile in connecting to this free wife because I Know I can be
hacked or scammed .
