Title: Scammers targeting coinmarketcap users at large rate
Post by: Outhue on August 24, 2024, 06:13:18 PM
So this afternoon my cousins and I were discussing the DOGS airdrop and other then we ended up sharing information about the right place for airdrops, and one cousin of mine made mention of coinmarketcap, I use this platform but not for once have I get selected as a winner on this crypto platform, but things took an unexpected turn when he showed me screenshot.

Here is what he claimed to be his right source...

https://i.postimg.cc/4NSJ6W4y/IMG-20240824-044054.jpg

This is nothing but scams, I headed to coinmarkcap myself and I saw many like it below many altcoins projects, he was lucky to have shared this with me, and he claimed that he already connected his special airdrop wallet, I just told him to abandon that wallet and create another, because I am sure it's likely compromised already.

The pictures above are confirmed to be scammers at work, they knew that so many people are now making comments under popular and new crypto projects on coinmarketcap, avoid such links at all cost, if you already click on these links it is time to abandon the wallet.

Scammers are ready to make use of any platform in making their strike for an attack on the targeted ones, not even now that things were revolving round and many are seeking for quick opportunity of making it through the airdrop rewards, even though they are doing less or nothing but just to claim the free airdrop, we have to intensify the way in which we conduct research on some of these offers and make sure that we are on the right platform for the intended offer because scammers are everywhere.

Even without a link to the scammer's profile, just from the screenshot, it's very obvious from the username of that profile that it's a scammer who made that post, but your friend without experience will just believe that post without doubt.

If you go to X, you will see enough of these impersonation scammers accounts, some of which will even be hard for a newbie to detect without a proper background check. You just have to educate your friend on how to avoid such a scam before he or she makes the mistake of connecting their wallet to any dapp that they will claim is for airdrop claiming.

Luckily your cousin has you by his side, many scammers out there target people who don't understand crypto in depth and the DOGS page in CMC is the perfect place for them to get their victim.

Changing the address is important, but it's not a good move because your cousin could fall into the same trap without you know it. The best way is to educate him technically, you can teach him how to check the DApp connected to his address via Revoke.cash (https://revoke.cash/) & do revoke. They also support lots of networks which you can check one by one on this page (https://revoke.cash/token-approval-checker/ethereum).

But, I'm surprise that this happened to a trusted app like Coinmarketcap? how would coinmarketcap would let this slide just like that? it is a big platform which already around for a long time. they should update their app security immediately.

Your early intervention ended up saving your cousin; if not, he would have ended up losing what was worked for. Although from the screenshot it is obvious that the user is a scam, due to a lack of knowledge, people tend to find it hard to understand because most of them are new in the crypto space and most of them join the airdrop farming. So them having less or no interest in things will make them find it so difficult to identify if something is a scam or not, but if they know or even understand that, by joining a link, you have to investigate the link so that you will not be a victim of such a scam, which will help them go a long way in the spare if not many will still lose interest in crypto at large.

A simple mistake if a person is not very careful them it could result in losing money to these scam schemes. The forum members in this forum always advice to people that being careful can make your assets safe even if it's sending crypto. All I can say is that, scammers will always find a way to scam people that's why there are lots of scam projects and also a clone of a platform where the owner of the scam platform is pretending to be the real legit platform when it is not.

Coinmarketcap has always been a scammers den
With their abundance of shit tokens.
It's usually a place that can cause FUD due to fake information shared by certain individuals in the site.
As long as there is a community
There would always be the crooks in it.

It is obvious that it is a fake account and that is what we keep seeing on social media people trying to stain good platforms that have high numbers of users. This is not the first time and their is no way this can be stopped even when you report the account, it would always take longer time before any responses will be attended to. Scammers are now trying to look the same like the site of platform they are trying to clone or copy just to steal money from innocent users. Newbies need to note this and verify every accounts they are following on social media so that they would not end up losing money to scammers.

Every platform where these scammers see an opportunity to target victims, they'd come. I am planning to make an account there but it seems that only those popular ones who have got a community can easily get more followers there. Anyway, these scammers will continue to plague any platform where there's no filtering of what they post unlike the forum where they can be busted by anyone who does deep thorough investigations, and when their schemes are dubious, they get caught. That type of style of copying a popular name, celebrity, platform, etc.'s is what scammers do and it's always best to check the profile. It's sad that when the account is an obvious scam, you'll never know how many might fall for that.

This is classic scam attempt which they make people believe that there's ongoing airdrops happening in that channel. Its dangerous for newbies especially they are on airdrops since provably that they might fall in this schemes.

What we can able to do with this is to warn people regarding on those type of scams and never believe on anything we see that they give free money with certain condition like putting our private key in their platform or they need to deposit some amount to get larger share on their airdrop since usually we will end up getting scam with this. Lots of them spreading anywhere and its better to have an idea with there schemes then avoid it.

But this is a fake X handle of CoinMarketCap. It is clearly not even a verified account so I don’t blame CoinMarketCap here. Yes platforms like this are easily targets for scammers to use as bait for their potential victims, but CoinMarketCap themselves do not shill any information of this Altcoins like that such as to protect their customers. The one news I have heard about them is data breach which is common for this platforms That’s why it is advisable to always stay away from giving ones vital information to this platform.

Just like you’re a guide to your cousin is what everyone who is still new to cryptocurrency needs. The amount of scams propagated on social media accounts all in the name of airdrops is alarming this days but sometimes I think it is people’s greed that pushes them to engage in such acts too

Coinmarketcap typically doesn't censor their community posting platform. It's similar to how you see scammers folk all over Twitter or on Facebook. It's the same thing everywhere. Whenever we onboard anybody to crypto, we should take the time to enjoy that they're educated about the security risks in crypto. These days, scammers are getting smart with how they go about their attacks.

Airdrops are one of the main onboarding tool in crypto and somehow, Scammers have hijacked that as well. Be careful out there everyone.

Most times you wouldn't even differentiate the fake X accounts of some projects or people from the original one if you don't take time to verify very well and it is not advisable for you to connect the wallet that you mostly you for airdrops because most airdrops are scammers den so I will advise you create a new wallet if possible to stay on a safer side. I know a lot of people who has benefited from airdrops but I don't find those projects attractive since I discovered that scammers easily get their victims through gifts in airdrop forms.

It's frustrating how scammers are increasingly targeting platforms like CoinMarketCap, taking advantage of users' interest in airdrops and new projects. Connecting wallets to unverified sources is always risky, and abandoning a compromised wallet is the safest move.

Always verify the authenticity of any CoinMarketCap-related account or communication. Scammers may create fake profiles that resemble official accounts. Check for verified badges or official announcements on the platform.

It's a reminder to us all to stay vigilant and double-check any links or offers we come across, especially in the crypto space. Scammers are getting more sophisticated, but spreading awareness like this can help others avoid falling into their traps. Stay safe out there!

It's crypto world my friend and scammers are everywhere in this world especially on sites like Coinmarketcap or on the Telegram groups of the projects that get capital via sites like Pinksale, and we can't stop those scammers. All we can do is to promote awareness about them so ordinary crypto users who aren't tech experts maybe safe from the traps of those scammers.

I believe you did a great job by posting the information about Coinmarketcap scams and now the ones who read this thread of yours will always try to be careful from such scams. The best remedy for prevent those scams from growing is by promoting awareness regarding those scams and once everyone knows about those scams then they will never get scammed by those scammers.

Lately, scammers have been getting more creative, even using other scammers to trick people. They're asking people to connect their wallets to claim tokens or pay transaction fees to receive funds. My approach is to thoroughly investigate on social media before engaging. I check if the token is genuinely being distributed, verify the legitimacy of their followers, see how many people have claimed the tokens, and ensure the Telegram group I'm following is authentic. It's crucial to double-check any airdrops before participating.

If you want airdrop, you can use Coinmarketcap or Coingecko to get links to websites, social media channels of these projects. You need to double check there, if these projects have airdrops, there are announcements officially on their websites and media.

If you can not find any information on airdrop there, it means you probably saw scam and phishing airdrops on Coinmarketcap from scammer accounts. This is not too hard steps for checking information.

The airdrop is not linked from official channels.
It's posted from brand new accounts.
It’s a Google Form.
Grammatical and spelling errors.
They ask for donations.
They use well known IP’s.
There’s no way to withdraw without a purchase.
They promise decent amounts of money.
It doesn’t feel right.

I don't think there's any platform that scammers don't find a way to exploit. The only discussion platform that has not been infected that much by scammers is Reddit and that's because of how highly moderated it is. Anything that looks like a scam or spam is deleted and the user is penalised, still, I'm certain there are a form of scams there.
Take this forum for example, no matter how moderated it is, you still see some cheap scams. My point is, people have to be vigilant anywhere they are online. Look a the screenshot for example. that's apparently a coinmarketcap handle but it's not even verified and the handle is not in any way the same as coinmarketcap. Little details like this give them away that's why we have to look out for irregularities like these.

I don’t trust comments made under posts sharing links of certain projects telling people about it, even if you want to give it a try you shouldn’t just go engage with them right away verify its authenticity by doing research on them before engaging with them.

The rate of scam in the crypto community is very high that’s why you don’t just believe everything you hear or see in the crypto space, scammers are always coming out with different kinds of ideas even unimaginable ideas just to deceive people so it’s up to us to safeguard ourselves because no matter tge technique they still need our help to successfully scam us so if we don’t lose guard there is no way they can succeed in scamming us. Also sharing ideas with others is good just as you and your cousin did, it can be helpful as we get to share our several experiences with each other.

By using coinmarektcap, scammers traps are not new in the crypto space but yet many investors are victim by their attack. We know that phishing sites are designed in such a way that a scammer will never understand at first glance. Since the crypto space is prone to scammers, a user should exercise utmost caution in every case. Those who want to participate in the airdrop must know whether the airdrop is real before joining. The original site of the airdrop should be found. Avoid joining if no authentic sign is found. Keep in mind that an airdrop link can be used by fraudsters to spread their scams.

The main purpose of fake airdrop sites is to collect personal information. A phishing site can spread and steal user's confidential information.

Some sites may also recommend downloading an app for AirDrop. Whenever that app is downloaded, the device can be infected with malicious malware, increasing the chances of losing data or assets stored in that device.

I guess you know who owns CMC? This is the crypto messiah who is currently sitting in jail and who says that 99% of people are "stupid" to the point that they will lose their coins if they keep them in non-custodial wallets. What I'm trying to say is that if you're going to play with dirt, then be prepared to get your hands dirty.

I personally visit CMC sometimes, but I neither see such things, nor am I personally interested in any airdrops - honestly, I have seen cats, dogs and various "animals" to such an extent that the whole scene is literally repulsive to me.

Scammers are out there everywhere and it is our due diligence that we have to be aware what we click on the internet.
We have to be cognizant enough because scammers are targeting the non-techie people in crypto space making them their prey.
From the above screenshot we can easily say that it's a scammer impersonating Coinmarketcap but a non-techie person might not be able to identify the scammer in the first glance and might fall for their scam.

Asides not joining every airdrop that one sees on the internet and finding out the modus operandi of scammers, i also advise that people should keep their assets offline, that is the best decision one can make as regards protecting their coins, if your assets are offline, then even if you are attacked by a malware or whatnot, your assets will still be safe. Airdrops aren't so profitable, so it is amazing how people lose money and personal data in search of such an inconsequential amount.

there are many ways that scammers do to cheat nowadays, so as users we must pay more attention to which sources we can trust, because if it is easy to believe anything on the internet, then we will definitely be victims of these scammers.

always asking and verifying the sources we use is the most important thing, because other people's experiences can prevent us from the potential of being scammed. not visiting a link carelessly is also important, because it could be that the link has been infiltrated by malware by the scammers, so that it makes our devices more vulnerable. and finally, don't be in a hurry to find profit so that you are easily tempted by an offer. these things can be done to avoid the potential of being deceived by these scammers.

I mean it's not new to see something like this, for sure these scammers and hackers are willing to do everything just to scam people since they are for sure might scam a huge amount of money on a lot of people, For sure they are earning because they just continue and keep on doing this, if they are not earning anything from it I doubt that they are still gonna continue this kind of trick, so they are probably scamming a lot of people with this kind of strategy.

For sure this was not a legitimate page of Coinmarketcap they just created a similar account to scam people since we know that coinmarketcap is already a popular website for most of cryptocurrency trader or users etc, so they might easily trust the link if they see that it is posted by coinmarketcap, something they could easily make the mistake of not doing a legitimate check if the page is legit or not. Its easy to see that it is a scam one, if you are looking for it.

Even without knowing much about this seeing this on the profile has shown that it is a scam and we all need to be careful, since the day the dog was announced that it would be listed, many scammers have raised to look for a way to scam those who work for the airdrop, Don't be surprised by seeing a trusted app like coinmarketcap, many apps are trusted but scammers always find a way to use the app to scammed people and again all app is not to be trusted, if you don't believe the app or doubting something about it is better you ask or don't use the app.

During the claim, many people are looking for a trusted app that they are going to use in the exchange of their dog coin so that they will have a good price when the exchange starts, although it is not bad to look for a good exchange but we should be careful with some app because many scammers are ready whenever they see that many people are going to earn from airdrop.

That's correct. This is the official profile of @CoinMarketCap (https://coinmarketcap.com/community/profile/CoinMarketCap/), which has 12.3M followers and a blue verification checkmark.

The Community section, when you open any coin page on CMC, is the most risky, as you will find a lot of comments from these fake impersonator accounts and phishing links in addition to FUDsters who spread fake information and misleading news to drive investors out of the market, so anyone can completely ignore this section and not take what is posted there seriously. Also, suppose you try clicking on any posted link. In that case, it will display the following warning message: "This link leads to an external website www.##.com and may contain potential security risks," with two buttons: "Let’s proceed" and "Cancel." Anyone who continues to the site despite the warning without doing their own research could potentially fall victim to a scam.

It is still dangerous that people might not notice their profile. I have to admit that I didn't notice it until you mentioned that  there is something unusual on those scammers fake account.

I usually check it back on the official Twitter/Telegram/Discord, if nobody talks about it on those group/channel, then it doesn't exist, that's how I know that it was a scam.

Yeah, this scammers really knows how to take advantage of what is the latest hype and craze in crypto, and right now, it's the airdrop of this project and so they quickly go to work and then using legit platform to spread their scams. Hopefully though, no one will fall for this trap as we can't really stop this criminals from trapping unsuspecting victims. And the best thing for newbies or even those who have been in the space for many years is to educate ourselves from this kind of running scams. And the good part is that there are lot of showers who are sharing their find and give us a healthy warning like the OP does here.

Am not surprised by this. Because where there is a large traffic of investors, and cryptocurrency enthusiasts that is where you will find most of the scammers. Out of 100% of the total number of sign-ups in coinmarketcap 30% are crypto scammers with multiple accounts. All of them with several different strategies to scam people. Some of them claim to whales with crypto telegram groups who would give you daily trading tips to make money while some claim to help you invest and make you rich like them.

Now it's not just the scammers there, most of the crypto listed on the tracing platform are scam tokens. So either these scams come to you as an individual or they come to you using crypto and airdrop.

I don't know if it's only me, but I don't find these scammers creative. In fact, they're using the same tricks over and over again for the past few years.
Phishing sites? Posting free airdrops on Twitter? They can't even change their usernames. I mean just a quick google search and you will see that the username is different.

I don't find these scammers to be creative. You know what's the problem? Investors are too gullible to fall for these free money tricks by these scammers. Scammers are evolving, but investors aren't. Newbies will always have a higher chance of falling to these shitty tactics. I find this a very common way of scamming people, but it works and it's because investors are too fond of free money that they are forgetting if that's a scam or not

Nothing surprising especially now that we know how popular Coinmarketcap is. I believe they will be using Coingecko in the future as well. Whatever happens, don't fall for these free money schemes by these scammers. We always say to do a bit of a research first before making an action.

Scammers are pretty stupid but their reused scam methods can work and help them to scam money of many people. It's not because scammers are smart and clever but because victims of scammers are more stupid than scammers.

You post says all about fact of scammers and their victims. Scammers can evolve but their scam methods are nearly the same, with little changes but victims got scammed because they failed to prepare basic knowledge and could not control their action to be carefully and could not control their greed. If people can do these basic things, they will not be trapped by scammers.

True, Reddit itself isn't that safe, few scam attempts on reddit look like the person is creating a sympathetic topic but they are trying to play victim and they end up dropping some link and that link is the gateway for their trick.

The platform is just better than the likes of Facebook and Twitter, believe me scammers are everywhere, there is no social media platform that's completely safe from scammers, the tactics they use per platform is the different due to the platform's separate securities.

The only way people can be ahead of these scammers is less attention, and looking deep before clicking on anything online, the numbers of scammers are increasing and they are getting more advanced by the day.
