I was thinking about good options to spend Bitcoin and international travelling is a quite obvious one: You don't have to care about currency exchange (at least not that much), and in many cases you bring precious Bitcoins into circulation to places away from the main tech metropoles.

Thus I start this thread to gather a list of cities and other places where you can travel with Bitcoin. The idea is that those who want can post cities and towns, be it in their own country or in locations where they have been, or whatever, where there is some Bitcoin acceptance. And add a photo from every location so the thread becomes a bit "visual" too ;)

The idea is to show cities, towns and resorts where you can pay for your main expenses with BTC. There should be at least accomodation (hotels, apartments ...) and places to eat (restaurants, bars, fastfood etc.) which accept Bitcoin. Places with shops and ATMs are even better. Resources to check are for example BTCmap (https://btcmap.org/), Coinpages (https://coinpages.io), and of course search engines, ChatGPT and friends etc. Important: If you want to travel to these places spending your BTC, double check the hotels and restaurants still exist and still offer Bitcoin payment.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

A vibrant metropolis with an immense cultural scene, and home to several Bitcoiners too. The long history of inflation and unstability has made Argentina one of the countries with most Bitcoin ownership in the Americas, and thus it's not surprising there are some hotels and restaurants you can pay with BTC. One can almost speak about a "Bitcoin district" in the city center, where you can find a Bitcoin-accepting shop in almost every block, and in total there are around 100 Bitcoin-accepting businesses. You can find restaurants, bars, Bitcoin ATMs, some few places for acommodation and shops at BTCMap here (https://btcmap.org/map#13/-34.58708/-58.41053). The image shows Floralis Generica, a moving sculpture located in a big park, the perhaps most unique attraction of the city.

San Miguel de Tucumán, Argentina

The city of Tucumán has about a million inhabitants and lies on the foot of jungle-covered mountains called the Yungas. It's a great place to explore Northwestern Argentina and has a lot of historic buildings, close to Salta, the Rio Hondo spas and the Quilmes pre-columbian city. This is actually the only interesting place in Argentina outside of the capital Buenos Aires where I have found both accomodation and food with payment in Bitcoin. The BTCmap location is here (https://btcmap.org/map#13/-26.81618/-65.21364). Tucumán has about 20 businesses accepting Bitcoin, which is quite good for a city off the beaten track!

I will tell you what place you can't expect to use bitcoin in and that would be the Philippines. Do not get me wrong, I think we have a lot of bitcoiners here and we have a very solid and active community in forums such as this one but I do not think I have seen a lot of establishments here that offer to accept bitcoin. And most stores would most likely not accept bitcoin. Especially small businesses. It would even be worse if you visit rural areas away from the capital city. We do not have a clear regulation about crypto as of now.
There have been mentions of few stores that do accept bitcoin, such as the night bar URBN QC in Quezon City, Draper Startup House in Makati City, and niche retailer KosneyLand located inside a mall in Mandaluyong City. Any filipinos or tourists that have visited my country and was able to use bitcoin anywhere, correct me and let me know! I hope this does not discourage anyone going to the Philippines lol but this is my personal experience.

Zurich, SWITZERLAND
Switzerland is one of the many countries that accepts Bitcoin payment in their businesses. Here are some luxury hotels in Switzerland that accept Bitcoin:
- The Chedi Andermatt: This 5-star hotel in the Swiss Alps accepts Bitcoin and Ethereum payments for stays starting at CHF 200. They partnered with Worldline and Bitcoin Suisse to enable cryptocurrency transactions.
- Dolder Grand: Located in Zurich, this hotel has been accepting Bitcoin since 2019 and partnered with BitLux private jets for a luxury travel venture. Guests can enjoy two-Michelin-starred cuisine and stunning views of Lake Zurich and the Alps.

Switzerland is the first country that comes to my mind, and it is popularly tagged as a Crypto-friendly country in terms of regulations. Switzerland, as we know, is always open for business, so I am not surprised about being friendly to Bitcoin, for they are innovative. Bitcoins' direct payment in stores and luxury boutiques is more common, and retail stores and restaurants easily accept Bitcoin payments. It's more interesting to say that Zug and Zurich have "Crypto Valley," which is unique, as not many countries have such.

Many may not know this: The Canton of Zug in Switzerland has served the government in various services payments in Bitcoin, including for tax, since 2016. The same goes for Ticino, Zurich, Commune of Zermatt etc, which follow the path afterwards.

If you're a Bitcoin enthusiast looking to travel and spend your sats with ease, here are three destinations where Bitcoin especially over the Lightning Network is widely accepted.

1. Lugano, Switzerland
Lugano is one of the most Bitcoin-friendly cities in the world. Thanks to the “Plan ₿” initiative, Lightning payments are accepted almost everywhere from kiosks and cafes to restaurants and even public services. You can even pay with Bitcoin at two McDonald’s locations in the city. Lugano is truly a model city for Bitcoin adoption.

2. Madeira, Portugal
Madeira, an autonomous region of Portugal, is another hidden gem for Bitcoiners. The local government is openly supportive of Bitcoin, and there’s a growing number of merchants accepting Lightning payments. The beautiful landscape, friendly atmosphere, and tax advantages make Madeira a top destination for Bitcoin users.

3. El Salvador
El Salvador made history by becoming the first country to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender. While it’s not yet universally accepted across the country, there are still many places especially in tourist areas and Bitcoin Beach , where you can pay with Bitcoin and Lightning.

And I would love to see to what extent which city came by utilizing BTC properly: however, choosing from the cities presented, I would rather choose those that are the most sunny ones during the current season ;D

Are there still some countries where Bitcoin is prohibited? Or there are some countries where I can't travel to with my Bitcoin? Because normally nobody suppose to know.

And is it even wise to visit a foreign country and start vsisting stores to pay with Bitcoin while shopping? Isn't that supposed to be dangerous? There is one thing I don't like about foreign countries, it's never your country to begin with, there is minimal to everything you can do in every situation.

I will be very careful and so good research on a country before going there and try spending money using Bitcoin, it's easier to get kidnapped if the public noticed that you are not from around there.

Threads like this helps educate forum members on what to expect when they travel. from what I understand so far about the thread, the focus is on cities where bitcoin can be spent when we travel, this will help travelers pick their travel locations and also know what to expect as regards their cryptocurrency investment.

Which fellow in their right sense will move into a country with the mind of showing off his/her crypto asset or portfolio. Outside spending this coin as legal tender, we all will want to visit countries where bitcoin holding isn't prohibited so that we don't end up losing our coin out of careless or have issues of using paid vpn just to monitor or spend your coin on some decentralized platforms

One of my favorite places in the world is Las Vegas, Nevada. Tons of places accept BTC there, including hotels. Plus they have a wide selection of Bitcoin ATMs all over.

If you go inside the Heart Attack Grill (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heart_Attack_Grill) on Fremont Street, you'll find one of my favorite Bitcoin ATMs of all-time. It has very low fees, accepts a number of different coins, and you can cash out quite a bit before any kind of KYC is required. Was quite convenient.

As for the food in there, I'm ashamed to say I've never tried it... They make you wear a patient gown when you go inside -- that was a dealbreaker for me.

If we talk about the country or location that can be visited, of course visitors are friendly to Bitcoin.

From several sources I read, of course Argentina is one of the best countries, but besides Argentina the country on the screen below, is also the best that can be visited.

I will suggest Port Harcourt City in Nigeria's River State. Nigeria might have been known to be a country filled with lots of vibes and, at the same time, have a national security issue that can't be ignored, but the city of Port Harcourt, which I have spent a lot of time in, is indeed a place where you can freely spend bitcoin in a few places.

The country Nigeria also doesn't have any policies which restrict people from spending bitcoin; as long as you are not into any illegal activities, you are good to go. I can also recall making a thread about purchasing bitcoin from a physical bitcoin local exchange shop (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5428926.msg61446961#msg61446961) back then in the same city of Port Harcourt.

Pleasure Park is one of the best place in the city of Port Harcourt, I have also had the best recreational experience in that city. If you need relaxation and other kinds of fun, you can get all that in that place; both cinema and slot machines are all available in that place.

Lagos Nigeria

Bitcoin is accepted in my country, and their was a hotel which announce that they accept bitcoin around 2021, that was the first hotel in my country that will accept bitcoin, you can just decide to give it a visit, and spend your bitcoin there. I don’t really know if any other hotel have started accept bitcoin here, but i will give you the name and the address of a luxury hotel that accepts bitcoin here, you can really visit it and explore.

George Residence is located in Lagos state in Nigeria. It’s a luxury hotel that accepts bitcoin, and you can easily make reservations making payment with bitcoin.

El Salvador

I would like to visit El Salvador one day to see how things have improved under President Bukele
and his very pro bitcoin-friendly policies. I would visit not only for travel but also for an educational experience.
Perhaps going on a guided tour to learn about some of the history and culture of the country would be interesting.

In my college days I did study a bit about the history of El Salvador and its relationship with the Untied States and the IMF.
Let's just say the history of the country is not very pretty and rather sad. So I am happy to hear things are much improved now
under the new leadership.

They have been doing so since July 2014, and they have partnered with Coinbase to process Bitcoin transactions. This is because the company's vice president of marketing realized that more and more customers are interested in paying with cryptocurrency, and he emphasized that the company should start accepting Bitcoin payments because they have more than 60 hotels across Canada.

Let me say that bitcoin is versatile and most of the countries deals with bitcoin and they do accept bitcoin, for me bitcoin has turn to general currency whereby it has being known across the nation and people is using it as traditional currency, but the problem is that it has not officially legalised in so many countries, and I have not seen a country that uses bitcoin as a legal tender, but you can spend bitcoin in such countries that bitcoin is yet to be approved as a legalised currency, in my place I use bitcoin to transact to people that knows about bitcoin, so in my place in Nigeria we use bitcoin but our government has not legalised bitcoin as a legal tender, so in summary, we have so many places where we can spend our bitcoin but secretly and openly, the thing is that so many of us have never notice that in their country

if you need to exchange your bitcoins to FIAT, and then use that later, it is not the same as using bitcoin directly. what is being discussed here is 'places where you can travel with bitcoin' meaning places where you can use bitcoin freely like you would use regular FIAT, whether to book a hotel or buy something in a shop, without any restrictive regulations.

and also if it is Bali, Indonesia, there has always been a rule that explicitly states that you cannot use anything other than 'Rupiah' to make payments... so if anyone uses bitcoin to make payments, either then or now, it is just as illegal, and we don't need to include it in this list.

One of the places where I can add is Ljubljana, Slovenia.
It is a small capital city, but it is very modern and crypto friendly. There are such cafes as Bitcoin Cafe where you can obviously pay using BTC, there were also a couple of hotels and hostels that allowed paying with it, such as BitCenter Hotel.

Even certain coworking placess and souvenir stores are crypto ready. They actually get into the entire decentralization spirit.
It has a beautiful, green and quite relaxing city, too, so it is a good place to go in case you require both technology and nature.

I do agree with it however, it is always better to double check before you book, as some businesses will not accept BTC anymore when it is inconvenient to them. Nevertheless, it is pleasant that more and more places pick up.

Singapore
is Actually Pretty Bitcoin-Friendly country

If you're into crypto, Singapore is one of those places that really stands out. The government, through the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), has set up a clear framework for how crypto businesses can operate legally. That kind of regulatory clarity is rare in this space, and it gives exchanges and startups the confidence to build without constant fear of getting shut down. There’s no capital gains tax either, which is a nice bonus for crypto traders. Overall, Singapore strikes a good balance — they support innovation, but they also take compliance seriously. That’s why a lot of big names in the crypto world have set up shop there.

Let's move on to some lesser known locations of Europe:

Dresden, Germany

Known as the "Florence of the Elbe", Dresden in the south of Eastern Germany is known for several stunning historic buildings, like the Frauenkirche, one of Germany's finest baroque churches. There are also some very interesting art museums in the city. If you're more of an outdoor freak, you can visit the nearby Elbsandsteingebirge, a hilly forested region with interesting rock formations, ideal for trekking and spa tourism.

It was surprising for me to see that Dresden has a really good number of Bitcoin-accepting businesses for a city of that size (500,000 inhabitants), more than nearby Leipzig which has a higher hipster population. Another interesting fact is that in Germany you have gift cards from several supermarket chains you can re-fill directly with Bitcoin.

I have checked Bali at BTCmap and there is at least one accomodation and several food businesses listed. So the entry of Bali here is OK. Maybe they circunvent the "payment prohibition" by simply declaring the transfer a barter. Normally everybody is free to exchange any (non-illegal) good for another good, and if one of these goods happens to be Bitcoin ...

El Salvador, on the other side, is really a low hanging fruit :P , but okay it's of course welcome here too. I'd like to know more about specific destinations there ;)

Hong Kong
While a lot of places around the world are getting stricter with crypto, Hong Kong still feels surprisingly open when it comes to Bitcoin. The local regulators have taken steps to build a proper licensing framework, so legit exchanges can actually operate without looking over their shoulder all the time. It’s not a free-for-all, but at least there are clear rules. OTC trading is still alive and well, and plenty of crypto firms keep offices there because of the city’s strong financial system, low taxes, and connection to the mainland. Things aren’t as wild as they used to be.

Bitcoin-accepting restaurants, accommodation, spa, stores, and others are sparsely found across the country, but if you want a specific place where you can easily spend your Bitcoin on pretty much everything, it's gonna be Boracay Island or what they're now calling the Bitcoin Island.

I was there 2 or 3 years ago and, indeed, you can easily find 'Bitcoin accepted here' stickers all over the place. You can find a place to stay, eat, get a tattoo, have a haircut, grab a drink, get a massage, and everything else using Bitcoin.

I think if there is any place consider to be a safe heaven for Bitcoin then it would probably be Switzerland, I mean Bitcoin is virtually accepted in almost all city and there are countless shops and business that accept Bitcoin for payment.

I think Estonia is one of the friendly countries that accept Bitcoin and Bitcoin users don't have to hesitate when it comes to it usage although just like every other countries one or two regulations are here and there but nothing taunting to affect the use of Bitcoin.

Prague is a gold mine to Bitcoin tourists. The city is historic with its beautiful castles and pavement road, yet there is more of a shock as to the number of businesses that receive BTC. BTCmap states the existence of more than 150 businesses (hotels, hostels, restaurants, etc.). There are such opportunities to have a good Czech dinner (such as Restaurace U Ceske Lipe) or stay in a hostel friendly to BTC (such as Czech Inn). It is also easy to find some Bitcoin ATMs around the place where one can cash out on them in case of necessity. It has long been a tech-savvy city, and it is also highly walkable, and you can stroll around such iconic sights as the Charles Bridge and spend your BTC.

Since 2021, when El Salvador currency laws were updated to include Bitcoin as a national currency, the city of San Salvador is the crypto enthusiasts favorite destination. Hotels such as the Sheraton Presidente or smaller guest houses can be paid directly with Bitcoin as can many restaurants, both local pupusa stands and also high end places such as La Gastroteca. Approximately 50 companies are listed by BTCmap and there are more than 60 Bitcoin ATMs within the city. It is a bright city where the crypto scene is developing and one can explore such a symbolic place as the Metropolitan Cathedra.

Barcelona is one of the most vibrant non-capital cities in Europe. With historic and modern architecture -- with the well known Sagrada Familia church, one of the most impressive modern buildings in the world --, beaches, museums, lots of cultural venues, it is perfect for a city trip. There are several Bitcoin-accepting restaurants and at least three options for lodging, two of them in the city center and one in the outskirts. This photo shows a block with some of the finest architecture of the city, including a house remodeled by modernist architect Antonio Gaudí. I haven't been to Costa Rica, but I have encountered countless of times posts, pictures, videos, stories, articles, and whatnot about people's Bitcoin experiences in that beautiful country.

I've read about the Bitcoin Beach Project in El Zonte in El Salvador, the Bitcoin City, the Bitcoin Island in my tiny nation, but there's also a Bitcoin Jungle Project in Costa Rica. The effort has the same goal: to try to create a circular Bitcoin economy. It's mainly focused in the Golden Triangle area of Puntarenas Province, particularly in the areas of Uvita, Dominical, Tinamaste, Ojochal, and Platanillo.

Anyway, just in case nobody would post about this place here. There must be hundreds, if not thousands, of all kinds of businesses in that country that accept Bitcoin payments. Are we unfortunate enough here on the forum to have never been graced by a Costa Rican?

One reason for that I can think of is rich people know that bitcoin is a real store of value. While some people below that line still thinks bitcoin is only a currency used by criminals and illegal activities.

I say this because when I tell my friends and family about investing into bitcoin and crypto, they think I'm into some ponzi or illegal networking schemes. While if I talk it about to an open-minded person which is often rich or successful people, they know bitcoin is a good investment or asset to gave.

One thing I noticed about this thread is that the places posted are mostly European countries. Travelling to those places could be expensive for someone that lives in Asia.

One of Central Eastern Europe's most beautiful and historic cities, Krakow has also some places to spend your Bitcoin: at least one place to lodge and some shops and eateries. The central area with a biq square and the famous underground bars are a must see. Another interesting place is the historic Kazimierz neighborhood, where some of the Bitcoin-accepting restaurants are located. In addition the Tatra mountainous range is quite close, and if you want to see the horrors humans are capable of and learn from it, you can visit Oswiecim, also known as Auschwitz. Read on the initiative behind the creation of this BTC-City project of Ljubljana, Slovenia and it was beautiful, an attempt to turn around the negativity that is associated with aspects of Bitcoin such as energy consumption, weather and climate to building over 450 stores from an old warehouse to ensure a more green and healthy ecosystem, using sustainable practices while conducting business and offering recreational activities. Also known as Cuzco, the city is both well known for its stunning baroque architecture and for its closeness to the Macchu Picchu ruins, the most famous pre-Columbian city in the Andes. Cuzco was both the capital of the Inca Empire and an important urban center in Colonial peru, so you'll find a lot of history in the city and its surroundings. Despite of having only about 400,000 inhabitants, Cuzco is very touristy, so it's not too surprising that Bitcoin is accepted in some places. One of South America's most underrated cities, São Paulo is perhaps the only true cosmopolitan metropolis on the continent, way ahead of Buenos Aires or Rio de Janeiro. People from nearly all nations of the world have immigrated into that bustling city of 20 million people which has even a famous neighborhood dominated by Japanese culture (mind you, not many countries are as far away from Brazil as Japan). The city center has nice historic buildings. But probably it's the skyscapers near Avenida Paulista and vibrant culture and nightlife of neighborhoods like Vila Madalena or Bixiga which make a trip to this city really special. Regarding Bitcoin, like Buenos Aires it has relatively few accomodation options (mostly flats in the Vila Olimpia area) but there are plenty of restaurants, bars, shops and other businesses accepting Bitcoin. Pinamar seems to be the the closest place Argentina has to a Bitcoin beach. It is located at an immense sandy coastline bordered by pine forests and dunes. According to BTCmap the town has more accomodation, shops, and restaurants than much larger cities and resorts like Mar del Plata or Córdoba. It is known for its bustling nightlife, its large mansions and high-level infrastructure, and there is a lot of sports you can practicate. I went once or twice in my childhood, but to be honest, I personally consider other beach resorts more interesting. :)

Nearby are Cariló, an interesting forested upscale resort, and Villa Gesell, a less expensive, more relaxed beach town with similar landscape but far less Bitcoin options.

I did not know that there is a place in Makati that accept bitcoin, good to know that there is one there all i know is there is a bitcoin atm there and everyday i watch people walk in the machine though have not try to use it, I'm a bit shy people will look at me in another way lol, i think in Boracay there is a place that also accept bitcoin? ill be happy if the computer stores can accept bitcoin in the future, also malls, that would be great but still a long way to go.

Salvador de Bahía is close and has probably the most attractive old city in Brazil. It's also known for its picturesque Carnival and interesting Afro-Brazilian cultural events, where a lot of local music styles can be heard. I haven't found accomodation accepting Bitcoin in Salvador, but there are several options to eat and other shops accepting the digital gold.
