Title: How, in the end, do you think the world will end?
Post by: sparkleboy on April 23, 2014, 03:18:41 AM
Seeing how things are going right now, i'd guess that either nuclear warfare+winter or yellowstone erupting does us in

note: for this substitute "world" with "all of humanity"

Every 10 years or so the main source of "Doomsday fear" changes (Russians, Nukes, new Diseases, Global warming, Islamic Crazies, etc), but it is always there if you look for it.
The world will not end, humans will survive...you don't get out that easily.  :D

Basalt eruption, Super volcano eruption, Nuclear Warfare, Alien invasion, Asteroid/Comets crashing to earth, Massive Solar Flare, Reversal of Earth Rotation, Neutron Star, Exploding Supernova, black hole, sun companion red dwarf, rogue planet coming from kuiper belt, super virus, zombie apocalypse.

We using up the Earth's resources, natural disaster rippling throughout, or a supernova. Or maybe just humanity dying off.

When we talk about the end of the world are we talking about just the demise of Humans or everything else that exists in this world..! if we talk about just humans i'll say Humans will be the reason for their own demise..! but for the demise of everything else there will be a huge Natural disaster that will end it all..! but cockroaches might survive :p

Probably pollution. Spray a chemical that will get in the lowest life forms, to get concentrated on bigger life forms, and causing world wide chaos. Something like that.

Or the sun will die one day, all life will die, and eventually the earth is going to get sucked in into a black hole.

Probably and epidemic that wipes out a lot of people followed by a water war but that is due to the pollution caused by humanity in the years prior to that time and the rapid population growth.

Since the OP used the term "world" and not "earth" I'd venture to guess that it's a sociological question.

Looking back in time we can see the rise and fall of civilizations. The world has ended many many times in the past.

Bitcoin can help end this scam.

The world as we know it will eventually end, however it might not kill all humans. We're like a disease that cannot be cured…
Most likely it will happen when we have depleted the earths resources or by climate change.

don't worry about the sun it is not going anywhere any time soon

I think our stupidity will kill us very soon, I think this century is the most vital for us, there are two many ways that we might kill our self with, one is already in progress aka pollution and destroying ecosystems and earth natural resources, this can and does trigger new virus for examples, the other is due to greed we might get to another world war. While natural disasters that can wipe us can happen, llike superventions, asteroids/meteorites, a gamma ray burt hitting us, ect ect these are unlikely and their occurrence is pretty low, and most of those are avoidable and humanity can surive if it decides to go interplanetary before it happen, but again human stupidity is preventing us from doing so, it is preventing us from putting in place a plan to deter asteroids heading our way, it is preventing us from doing space exploration on Mars from example and aiming high.....

I am not one to dismiss the beliefs of other regardless of whether I agree, but I do understand one thing for sure. Eventually the ability to maintain life on the planet Earth will dwindle and disappear altogether, and only if we can cast of the petty self-centered ideology that our species has so easily clung to, can we find salvation. If we hope to propel our existence into the boundless future we must cooperate on a global level in achieving more then just a bit of space exploration. We must eventually fling the remnants of our entire being into the "final frontier". I may not see the day and most likely none of you will either, but it is my deepest hope that our world becomes abandoned like so many nests after their baby birds take flight to see something far more expansive, beautiful, finite then we have ever come close to comprehending before. Its a big universe out there and it tantalizes myself at least with the majesty of discoveries that likely await.

global warming with all the land submerged or even earlier due to an asteroid .
Actually, Earth is heating up in parts of our atmosphere and it is scientifically proven. That is not in debate. What is in debate are the ways temperature is measured. Some parts of our atmosphere are heating up...some parts are not. So, scientifically, there are parts of our atmosphere that are getting hotter. Now, the debate is whether the atmospheric increases being measured by satellites and the land temperatures measured from the ground do not support each other...so scientists do not know exactly what is happening. Neither side is right or wrong. Which I tend to believe that our atmosphere has always been doing this, we just have never had the technology to notice. Now that we can take these measurements, scientists want to start arguing over the findings.

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

I think at this point the only thing able to stop us is humanity itself. Unless something extremely major happens like Yellowstone, or a new antibiotic resistant germ, we can't die off anymore. We can shoot a asteroid to pieces, or push it away, we WILL have a colony on Mars or the Moon by 2040.

In my opinion, the world will end with a previously unknown epidemic, spread by some newly discovered air-borne virus. Remember, Ebola was discovered only in 1976. A lot more unknown viruses might be existing in the remote an inaccessible forests of Amazonia and Central Africa.

the one that is most likely (though still not that likely) everyone seems to be missing. namely artificial intelligence may simply out compete us. not really a disaster though. it would just be replacing inferior intelligence with superior intelligence. on net a good thing but it would still mean the extinction of our species.

At the moment yes, since there is not really anyone ready to push the button (not even DPRK).
But if there would be a nuclear war big areas would become totally devastated and also become uninhabitable for a very long time. Then many more would probably die in the atomic winter that could occur as well.

Not in the essence that the planet will turn to dust no, but it could very well end life on this planet as we know it. Atomic bombs can cause really heavy damage you know, and atomic dust can contaminate places unaffected by the explosion itself as well. It could also cause an atomic winter, which would be really devastating to the people that has survived the war.

How big do the nukes have to be for nuclear winter?
A single 100 megaton air burst would be enough, so it wouldn't require that many (The strongest ever built was ~50 and was a hydrogen bomb).

Why would the viruses evolve where there are almost no people? Doesn't it usually evolve where there are to many of a specie?

Because the viruses infect other organisms also, not only humans.

Take for example the case of the Ebola virus. The virus was actually confined to a few remote caves in a gorge, where no large living creatures except the bats lived. As a part of the human encroachment, hunters moved in to the cave (probably to take refuge from showers, or to make a camping site) and contracted the deadly disease.

- Asteroid/celestial object
- Nuclear winter brought about from wars resulting from dwindling resources in the distant future

The reason we're not more responsible is because when we evolved it was much more important to take short-term decisions. But evolution has not been able to keep up with technological advancements. Therefore we don't take the decisions that's best for humanity long term.

Why Aliens? I don't buy it. Plenty of opportunity to have done it by now and we're still here.

Solar Storm is a very good one. In 1859 there was a solar storm so powerful the aurora borealis (or the northern lights) was visible from Cuba. Telegraph posts caught fire. Imagine what a storm like that could do to your mining rig  :)

The solar storm would be pretty bad as the EMP wave takes out comms arrays then a virus at that time and a pandemic without world coordination to be finished off with aliens :)

But I wonder would the aliens catch our virus or spread them lol.

It depends on how we react and which aliens we meet first. We might meet some that are just looking to destroy everything, including us.
Then again we might meet some friendly one who could save us.

we have been slowly killing earth for ages by polluting, exhausting natural resources etc. This is the ultimate end but something might come before that, all it needs is a large asteroid or huge solar burst and whoosh.. we are gone.

Statistically looking it's more likely that something else will kill us in the meantime. It could just be as simple as an asteroid. We can't stop those remember.

we have been slowly killing earth for ages by polluting, exhausting natural resources etc. This is the ultimate end but something might come before that, all it needs is a large asteroid or huge solar burst and whoosh.. we are gone.
Statistically looking it's more likely that something else will kill us in the meantime. It could just be as simple as an asteroid. We can't stop those remember.

yeah, unless obama comes up with something like (landing on the asteroid in bugatti space shuttle, drilling 100m hole with hilti drill bits and blowing it to pieces detonating a russian nuke) armageddon style :)

There are actually serious plans to do so if it happens.
Let's just hope that it doesn't happen right now, cause then Russia and America would just be fighting on whom would get the biggest bill from it, whom'd get the honor from it and if Crimea is Russian or not! :D

Without a real solution, we can't avoid death by an asteroid. If one is coming directly at us, it is just a matter of time before it wipes us out.

It does, indeed, but for these things it is not moving fast enough.
You would need some sort of gun/laser whatever which would pulverize the asteroid completely (else the debris would also do a lot of damage). The governments need to invest more money in R&D for these kinds of things.

One of the most dangerous threats to the human population is a simple virus - that is, a deadly disease that spreads rapidly throughout the world.
Within the last century we’ve had four major flu epidemics, as well as HIV and SARS, and scientists says it’s inevitable that another will occur.
If a deadly contagion surfaced today, it could spread even faster and infect even more people.
Considering how quickly diseases spread though all forms of modern transportation — and the amount of international travel that takes place today — an outbreak could have a more devastating impact.
And if nature doesn’t send such a deadly contagion our way, mankind just might.
Biological warfare is another threat that looms over the modern world, and diseases like anthrax, Ebola and cholera have all been weaponized.

An asteroid, pollution, global warming or a super volcano are also great choices.

Another theory is connected to Planet X, or Nibiru, is the supposed 10th planet in our solar system - if we're counting Pluto. According to the Planet X theory, Nibiru is enormous and is on a 3,600-year elliptical orbit that places it in Earth’s gravitational proximity in 2012 - an event that would cause flooding, earthquakes and worldwide destruction. Proponents of the theory cite earthquake and weather data as evidence of the planet’s increasing influence on Earth, and some say that Egyptian records show that the Planet X 'flyby' corresponds to Noah’s great flood and the sinking of Atlantis.

However, astronomers say there’s no evidence to support Planet X theory and that if the planet did exist, humans would be able to see such a large planet with the naked eye. The Nibiru catastrophe was initially predicted to occur in May 2003, but the date was later changed to the infamous Dec. 21, 2012.

A form of Nuclear Fart Fusion we will pump enough gas into our atmosphere and some granny will turn on her microwave with a faulty door and when it dings, it will start a a chain of events beginning with a fission fart "trigger" radioactive particles will result from that. creating the high energy that is required to bring two or more protons close enough that nuclear forces overcome their electrostatic repulsion. thus ending life as we know it.

Seeing how things are going right now, i'd guess that either nuclear warfare+winter or yellowstone erupting does us in

note: for this substitute "world" with "all of humanity"

The only thing we know for sure, is that the sun will engulf Earth, and the inner Solar System in a inferno in a couple billion years.

However, Thermonuclear Global War, Yellowstone, or Crustal Displacement (explains all the intensifying earthquakes) will do us in.

Quote
Lieder described Planet X as roughly four times the size of the Earth, and said that its closest approach would occur on May 27, 2003, resulting in the Earth's rotation ceasing for exactly 5.9 terrestrial days. This would be followed by the Earth's pole destabilising in a pole shift (a physical pole shift, with the Earth's pole physically moving, rather than a geomagnetic reversal) caused by magnetic attraction between the Earth's core and the magnetism of the passing planet. This in turn would disrupt the Earth's magnetic core and lead to subsequent displacement of the Earth's crust.

All the humanity will die of countless wars and diseases. The pollution of waters and soil will be a trigger for a massive global war over clean parts of the earth. Then the nuclear war will break loose and 90% of population will die in pain and misery. The remaining 10% will still be fighting until disease takes them to their graves

The threat of an asteroid hitting the planet is quite real. After all, the Earth and moon have craters that prove they have a long history of being hit by large objects from space. In 2028, the asteroid 1997XF11 will come close to hitting Earth, but scientists say that won't actually happen. However, if it were to hit the planet, the mile-wide rock would race toward the surface at roughly 30,000 mph and probably wipe out most life on the planet.

Conclusion: Just wait until 2028 and see for yourself how world would end, or not.

Or the sun will die one day, all life will die, and eventually the earth is going to get sucked in into a black hole.

I watched a special about 20 ways the world could end, the interesting one was the black hole cause if a black hole was to approach us it will start making the skys go black as it would eat away the atmosphere and then the buildinds and we will all start to stretch and be torn to pieces and then to atoms.  Im sure we will become atoms very fast.

Black hole is improbable.  Our nearest star is four light years away - there just isn't enough mass here to attract one.

We'll probably be destroyed within 20 years when computers become sentient.

A rogue star; similar in notion to a rogue planet, a star that was somehow ejected from its original galaxy or is in the process of being ejected. If one were to pass close enough to disturb the Oort Cloud, we could be looking at an increase of objects thrown in towards the inner solar system.

A vacuum metastability event; the idea that we live in a false vacuum, which could at any point in time decay into true vacuum.

A quote from a paper, which Wikipedia mentions:

Quote
The possibility that we are living in a false vacuum has never been a cheering one to contemplate. Vacuum decay is the ultimate ecological catastrophe; in the new vacuum there are new constants of nature; after vacuum decay, not only is life as we know it impossible, so is chemistry as we know it. However, one could always draw stoic comfort from the possibility that perhaps in the course of time the new vacuum would sustain, if not life as we know it, at least some structures capable of knowing joy. This possibility has now been eliminated.

One is for sure. We can almost with 100% certainty say that our world will be destroyed by humans. We bring that destruction upon ourselves unless something will dramatically change in the way people lives.

But people never changes.

Yeah that sounds about right.

Humans first destroying one another, we like to build things to be great then history shows we just like to shit on everything.

The big environmental disaster is definitely coming (not just global warming, but also our overexploitation of natural resources, for example, catching more fish then are needed to repopulate for the next season), but I don't think it will kill us. The only real possibility I can think off is a global war for resources - if we haven't found a way to cut off our dependence on unsustainable resources (oil, coal, etc) before we start really running out of them, then there is a very good chance we may turn to war.

I think the world will end at the hands of our own kind, humanity. I suspect this will happen by Singularity.

One of the most dangerous threats to the human population is a simple virus that is, a deadly disease that spreads rapidly throughout the world.
Within the last century we’ve had four major flu epidemics, as well as HIV and SARS, and scientists says it’s inevitable that another will occur.
The 1918 influenza outbreak killed more people than World War I, and if a deadly contagion surfaced today, it could spread even faster and infect even more people.
Considering how quickly diseases spread though all forms of modern transportation and the amount of international travel that takes place today, an outbreak similar to that of 1918 could have a more devastating impact.

And if nature doesn’t send such a deadly contagion our way, mankind just might.
Biological warfare is another threat that looms over the modern world, and diseases like anthrax, Ebola and cholera have all been weaponized.

why can't it be a perfect storm of everything? in the end, it'll probably be due to something that we caused upon ourselves in addition to some natural disaster.

agree with that

" The Sun is about halfway through life, during which nuclear fusion reactions in  its core fuse hydrogen into helium. Each second, more than 4 million tonnes of matter are converted into energy within the Sun's core, producing neutrinos and  solar radiation; at this rate, the Sun will have so far converted around 100 Earth masses of matter into energy. The Sun will spend a total of approximately 10 billion years as a main sequence star. The Sun does not have enough mass to  explode as a supernova. Instead, in about 5 billion years, it will enter a red giant phase, its outer layers expanding as the hydrogen fuel in the core is consumed and the core contracts and heats up. Helium fusion will begin when the  core temperature reaches around 100 million kelvins "

If a star close to us happens to hypernova we may be cooked.

Nah, Madagascar would be fine, unless the epidemic starts there. ;D

(for those that don't know what I'm talking about, search for an old flash game called Pandemic/Pandemic II)

I feel it will be a virus or bacteria some kinda of crazy epidemic that will involve one person getting on a plane and those 200 passagers branching out ect. If nothing like that happens I believe over population will eventually do it. You can only kill so many cows and drink so much water before you cant sustain the population of the world.

The humans might destroy themselves, but not not the world. The earth survived huge meteors impact and all kind of craps way before the first human has born, and it never ever has been even close to be destroyed. The earth has seen already 5 big massive extinctions only to see the live grown again. I think the humans won't be even able to destroy life, so if a massive nuclear war happens, in some billion of year we would see a world dominated by intelligent cockroaches or some radioactive life.

Some will manage to survive no matter what happen.

Human, are like cockroaches, you can kill many but you can not kill them all.
