Title: Just bought my first tangible thing with bitcoin - so exciting
Post by: yenom on April 25, 2014, 01:45:13 PM
I really didn't expect it to be this exciting but it was. Maybe that says a lot about me.

I just bought a motherboard from scan.co.uk and paid with bitcoin. When I clicked "pay with bitcoin" I got this screen:

I opened mycelium on my Nexus 5 and bam, paid. Eight minutes later, I got transaction confirmed. I feel like I've made history in my home, which is true or I'm totally deluded. I replenished the bitcoin from bittylicious and that is already in my wallet. Can't wait for the day when I don't need to do that anymore...  ;D

Wow.. so exciting to hear this. But I feel sad that you had to spend so many mBTCs on it, as the exchange rate had come down quite a bit during the last few days. Anyway... enjoy!

Not a big deal because I replenished from bittylicious immediately so my holdings haven't gone down. I just wanted to do my first purchase. :D

Oh dear, now scan.co.uk takes Bitcoin? That's going to make holding onto my coins even more difficult!

Congrats!   Yes, now that you mention it, I think it would be interesting to see a graph that details the amount of bitcoin transactions taking place at the times of the highest price volatility.   I am pretty much just sitting on all of my holdings...I convert some to LTC and then back to BTC every now and then, but I don't buy any physical items.

If I were to make purchases, I think I would try and wait for a time where the market is relatively flat, or I guess you could do your best to try and time the crash, and purchase right before the price drops significantly..

Since late 2013 it seems few people have realized the real potential of bitcoin. I never sell my bitcoin, I spend it. Each time I do I have the same experience you have had. It's the fastest, safest, and cheapest way to use money on the net.
I use it several times a week at restaurants, stores, private sales. It's awesome! I feel sorry for the suckers who hear about bitcoin and think they are going to get rich as "investors". That was never the intention of bitcoin. It is for buying stuff.

Good job! :) I wish you will buy a lot more stuff using your bitcoins :)

Spending Bitcoins on things can be addicting ;))

Good luck!

Thanks for the comments, I've been thinking about my first bitcoin transaction. The sad thing is I will probably not continue to purchase things with bitcoin. There is not enough incentive (aside from a warm fuzzy feeling) for me to continue. Let me break it down.

Computer part was £46 including VAT + P&P
Buying with bitcoin cost me 179.8 mBTC = £48.32 which is 5% dearer.
However, replenishing my coin (180mBTC) from bittylicious cost me £50.19 (9.1% dearer)

So the end result is that I could have paid with GBP for £46, or paid with bitcoin and pay a 9.1% surcharge for using bitpay and replenish.

It's really not looking attractive... so I don't think I will be doing it again. If scan offered a 10% discount for buying with bitcoin I would do it every time, but paying a 9% premium for using bitcoin isn't an incentive for me to use it and it's not that much more convenient than getting out my debit card or (shock horror) paypal.

I use my bitcoin and litecoin mostly for spending too. But I usually get them in the same way, since my business accepts those two currencies as payment.

Kinda like when people bought things on Ebay first and used PayPal huh?

rolls eyes.

I have to agree it is not attractive to buy Bitcoin only for spending purpose because of the conversion fees. But if you receive Bitcoins, it is attractive to spend it directly instead of exchanging to fiat and spend...

The same is when you receive USD and must convert to EUR for spending...

Spending BTC is easy and fun.
Someday I will be able to do it more often.  :)

That's kind of cheating using a third party.

However I do find the Amazon gift card with the $2000 limit very flexible.

...

Here are three who sell gold and other PMs for BTC (with a comment each):

goldsilverbitcoin.com (http://goldsilverbitcoin.com) (I bought a 0.25 oz Gold Eagle from here in Dec 2013; look here: http://goo.gl/pJM7UE)

amagimetals.com (http://amagimetals.com)  (Recommended by a guy who sold me BTC)

agoracommodities.com (http://agoracommodities.com)  (NICE website, apparently offer gold from 0.1 oz to 1 kg, also hard-to-find RHODIUM)

***

Anyone who buys from anyone please let us know how your experience went!

Congratulations, I haven't bought anything with bitcoin other than miners but somehow buying miners doesn't quite have the same feeling as buying something else that is directly or indirectly related to bitcoin i think. I have this personal principle of not spending bitcoins other than on things that can net me back bitcoins, like miners, gambling sites, tradebots etc. But I would love to at least try purchasing a cup of joe as they say from a btc-accepting brick-and-mortar.

Might I recommend a small silver round as your first non-mining related purchase.
There is something about holding a piece of precious metal that makes a person feel good inside. Using your hard earned bitcoin to buy it is fulfilling.
