I really didn't expect it to be this exciting but it was. Maybe that says a lot about me.

I just bought a motherboard from scan.co.uk and paid with bitcoin. When I clicked "pay with bitcoin" I got this screen:

I opened mycelium on my Nexus 5 and bam, paid. Eight minutes later, I got transaction confirmed. I feel like I've made history in my home, which is true or I'm totally deluded. I replenished the bitcoin from bittylicious and that is already in my wallet. Can't wait for the day when I don't need to do that anymore...  Grin

Wow.. so exciting to hear this. But I feel sad that you had to spend so many mBTCs on it, as the exchange rate had come down quite a bit during the last few days. Anyway... enjoy!

Not a big deal because I replenished from bittylicious immediately so my holdings haven't gone down. I just wanted to do my first purchase. Cheesy

Congrats!   Yes, now that you mention it, I think it would be interesting to see a graph that details the amount of bitcoin transactions taking place at the times of the highest price volatility.   I am pretty much just sitting on all of my holdings...I convert some to LTC and then back to BTC every now and then, but I don't buy any physical items.

If I were to make purchases, I think I would try and wait for a time where the market is relatively flat, or I guess you could do your best to try and time the crash, and purchase right before the price drops significantly..

Since late 2013 it seems few people have realized the real potential of bitcoin. I never sell my bitcoin, I spend it. Each time I do I have the same experience you have had. It's the fastest, safest, and cheapest way to use money on the net.
I use it several times a week at restaurants, stores, private sales. It's awesome! I feel sorry for the suckers who hear about bitcoin and think they are going to get rich as "investors". That was never the intention of bitcoin. It is for buying stuff.

Thanks for the comments, I've been thinking about my first bitcoin transaction. The sad thing is I will probably not continue to purchase things with bitcoin. There is not enough incentive (aside from a warm fuzzy feeling) for me to continue. Let me break it down.

Computer part was £46 including VAT + P&P
Buying with bitcoin cost me 179.8 mBTC = £48.32 which is 5% dearer.
However, replenishing my coin (180mBTC) from bittylicious cost me £50.19 (9.1% dearer)

So the end result is that I could have paid with GBP for £46, or paid with bitcoin and pay a 9.1% surcharge for using bitpay and replenish.

It's really not looking attractive... so I don't think I will be doing it again. If scan offered a 10% discount for buying with bitcoin I would do it every time, but paying a 9% premium for using bitcoin isn't an incentive for me to use it and it's not that much more convenient than getting out my debit card or (shock horror) paypal.

I use my bitcoin and litecoin mostly for spending too. But I usually get them in the same way, since my business accepts those two currencies as payment.

I have to agree it is not attractive to buy Bitcoin only for spending purpose because of the conversion fees. But if you receive Bitcoins, it is attractive to spend it directly instead of exchanging to fiat and spend...

The same is when you receive USD and must convert to EUR for spending...

That's kind of cheating using a third party.

However I do find the Amazon gift card with the $2000 limit very flexible.
