Dear fellow miners,

That in and of itself is not a big deal.  What is rather cool however, is that I'm mining with a single Block Erupter that I bought on eBay for $300.  My hash rate hovers around 38 Gh/s.  That means of the current Total Hash Rate of 55,000 TH/s or so, I represent a scant 0.069091%.  I didn't just find a block, I crushed it with a share value of 15.6G.  Was I solo mining?  Hell no.  I'm contributing a minuscule amount of work to the Eligius pool.  Nevertheless, there is my block.  Height 298,562. See? Lightning can and does strike.  If any of you feel bad about the fact that earned +0.00016263 BTC instead of 25 BTC for my efforts, my address is 19cK8nHieqXxZbWoYFSdSgm2Q3Cb5CEPN6  Donations welcome!!

At some point these low hash rate devices really work well in the margins of any pool (eventually rounding errors will mean zero payout), and you're better off with the solo mine :)  Still, congrats! :D

At some point, it will be not profitable to run those those low hashrate (low efficiency) miners, no matter you are pool mining or solo mining, unless you have free electricity.

If BTC price doesn't rise then that some point will be coming soon :P

Wow, you were incredibly lucky for finding 2 blocks with a GPU in 2013. :)

That's the price you pay for mining in the pools.  You could have risked it, and found the block with a  large payout, but PROBABLY never gotten anything in 50 years.  So it is cool, but you might as well stay in the pool since that was probably the one block you'll find in your lifetime.  And I doubt anyone will "donate" to you, not sure why they would?

You can always know that YOU mined that block.  I have 2 TH/S and have not hit my own block yet.  I mine on a pool, but that would be an exciting day for me, I'd probably remember that block number the rest of my life :) hahaha.

A couple more difficulty hikes and the rounding error will make this unit only good for solo mining or a doorstop.  Fortunately, I pay a flat rate for utilities from my landlord so I'll just let it run solo.

What makes it even more awesome is that you actually represent 0.000069091% of the network. The current hash rate is in TH/s, and you're in GH/s.

Technically speaking, you can just get lucky and solve for a hash in your first try. It's very unlikely, but it is possible to myunderstanding.

Yes, statistically speaking it is possible, but the possibility is so low that no one has imagined it.

I was inspired by the OP and setup solo mining on my graphics card. The software i am using is cuda miner. It now says "stratum detected new block", does this mean that i have found a block? If yes, should i focus more mining power to the miner so it mines the block?

No, you haven't found a block.  It means that your mining software has been informed there's a new block on which it needs to work.

I have two bfl units, one is a 30 gh that I have been trying to find a block solo mining since December 2013 and 523 million is the highest it has found, my other 230 gh unit I mine on p2pool with.

Couldn't stomach solo mining with both of them as I'd rather have a little of something than a lot of nothing.

Absolutely!  It's why I solo mine.  Chances are I'll never find that block, but why not try?  It costs virtually nothing to do so (5 Antminer U2s driven by an rPi).

Yeah so technically you havent found a block. The pool has and you would of likely not found the same block solo.
It was a team effort I'm afraid.

You are correct that they would not have found that same block, since they're not the originator of that block, but I think you're mistaken in the 'team effort part'.
Technically, they did find that block.  They way it works (roughly) is that the pool effectively collects the transactions and creates the block to be solved, that block includes the information on where payment should go (to the pool).  Each individual miner at a pool tries to solve that block, submitting solutions that fall within the pool's accepted range (for share counting).  If a miner happens to have a solution that not only falls within the pool's accepted range, but the network's accepted range (i.e. solved the block), that's when the network broadcasts it to collect the reward.  The odds of a miner solving a block at a pool is pretty much just as good as when mining solo (assuming the same parameters - i.e. some coins have different difficulties and you can often configure things at the pool to get more difficult blocks if you've got a fast miner, yielding a higher payout to you).  It's just that with the low odds, it's often better to mine at a pool and get a relatively steady fractional reward than it is to try solo mining - until the odds get so bad that said fraction at a pool is negligible and you really might as well solo mine if you can stand to burn the electricity.
A 'team effort' would involve each miner contributing a small part of the solution, and that's just not how Bitcoin mining works; Either you find a solution, or you don't.  It's really an individual effort, just one that is hugely parallellized, which increases the odds for the group (and most importantly, the pool), but does nothing for the individual.

The odds of finding a block solo without decent hash rate are pretty low. But if you like the Lotto then happy days.

Even a mining pool can generate such input ,depending on how/where the coins are from, I have loads of these from 'http://eligius.st/'

Mine something with low difficulty and you will see them all the time.

I generally wont think about solomining for blocks if the dif is past my threshold or a couple of hours.

But it was the best feeling ever to see my first block ever for any coin.

You know what I may just chuck something on and let it mine away and just forget about it for the next year or so and come back to see what happen :P

None of the small form factor ones, you'd have to get one that requires a dedicated external power supply.  If you want to stay with the small miners, then...

The hex•fury and NF6 would be your best bet for raw power at hash rates between 10Ghash/s and 14Ghash/s (and both practically need a powered USB hub), but have prices to match (NF6 not yet commercially available).
The Antminer U2 is your best bet for getting decent hashing power for cheap and can be bought just about anywhere.
The Block Erupter USB is your best bet for low cost ($5), but they have very low hash rates.
The Twin Chip Fury is probably the best 'middle ground' one, decent hashing speed, reasonable power use, and available at several reputable stores.

I know what you mean. I had the same situation happen. Mining for a few days and found a block and then a week or two later found another block.

Looks like a glitch, even though it says a block was found, the share appears to be too low.  Try updating to the latest cgminer.

i never found a block solo mining only in pools with my 1x7970

If someone finds a block for a pool, they should not feel taken advantage of.
If they were solo mining instead, they wouldn't have won the block because the bitcoin address used to receive the new bitcoins would be replaced and therefore produce a completely different merkle root, meaning a completely different block hash. A hash with a bunch of leading zeroes for one payout address would become just another boring hash for a different payout address.

After mining since last November, now throwing 2+Ths into the network I found one!  Happened sometime in last 12 hours but I'm not even sure what device found it yet.

Yep if you have only a couple of block erupters you should solo mine, the probability of finding a block is like winning at the lottery, but if you win, you win high.

The chances of finding a block solomining with a block erupter is so slim it is ridiculous

The pools really ought to give some small reward to the miner who found the block, such as an extra 0.1BTC  for being the lucky finder of the block.

Otherwise....  all the small time miners  are better off witholding and discarding the block that they solved,  instead of sharing with the network; in case they do find the solution..   so although the pool as a whole will be slightly less profitable...  lower network difficulty, that way :)

What good would the small time miners be doing for themselves if they withheld a block? Ignoring the fact that most small miners would not have the technical inclination as to how to withhold blocks, they would still lose out over the long run as they would receive a lower amount of payouts. 

If your mining operation is a block eruptor.... you have nothing to lose.
A "lower amount of payouts" from nearly zero, is hardly distinguishable from nearly zero.    Many of the pools have a mechanism such as pay per share, so the withholder doesn't lose any payouts  even if the pool is strangely 'unlucky'.

They're paid just by "proving" they are working on the solution.

Without an extra kickback for providing the solution when they find it, however... the pool operator, and the majority of the miners need the solution to be found early a LOT  more than the individual miner does.

Grat's on finding a block especially since also mining on Elig you helped us all ;D I found a block with one of my eruptors back in december but it was also during pool mining and wished it was solo hehe But at the end of the day you can truly say You Made Bitcoin and there's a piece of you in 25 bitcoins added too the infrastructure with your name on it and made a difference! You did your part to contribute for Everybody and Bitcoin as a Whole!That alone is Priceless and a good feeling as you contributed and helped make Bitcoin work ! not everybody  can actually say they did do it but only tried? ;)

If you had a block eurpter then you would be loosing out anyway as your electric costs would exceed your revenue.

We can ignore the fact that the chances of a block eurper finding a block are slim to none.

You also have the ethical issue that when you are mining on a pool you are essentially promising that you will provide the pool with work that your miner does and in return the pool gives you payment based on your shares. If the work your miner does involves finding a block then that work is due the pool.

wow, congrats, I think new pools should be created to reward block founder a FULL bitcoin and the rest divided normally, so everybody take a share of 24 BTC and give the remaining BTC to the block founder.
