Title: Re: [ANN] Bither - Say goodbye to Hardware Wallets.
Post by: bithernet on May 12, 2014, 02:58:25 PM
Reserved for Q&A:

Which one is better, a phone, or a hardware wallet?
Hardware wallet:
1. produced by ?
2. maybe presale and who knows the actual deliver time?
3. how about the failure rate?
4. expensive.

Phone:
1. produced by Google, Apple, Samsung, LG, Moto and so on.
2. sold millions of units everyday.
3. high industry standard.
4. cheap (some are even lower than $20).
5. great user experience.
6. best operating systems (Android, iOS).

Bither Cold Wallet is running on an offline phone, and has automatically backup function. That means, at least you can have two seperate hardware devices (ROM and SD card) keeping your wallet safe. If you want more backups, you can buy more SD cards, it's cheap and also follows the industry standard.

So, which one is better?  ;)

I shiver at the thought that someone may actually put their life's savings into Bither. A wallet which pops up out of nowhere and says "Hey, check out our slick app design. You can trust this wallet, cause it looks hip. Forget the source code which we never showed. Hey, it's on Google Play, so it's legit."
I'M GRIPPED BY DITHER AT THE THOUGHT OF USING BITHER.

We can just wait until they make it open source in two weeks...

If you are going to open source the code in two weeks why not wait two week and launch with open source code?  To any user considering using the client, wait two weeks for the source code first.

I don't really see how this makes a hardware wallet obsolete. A phone can always fail/brick/die/break/whatever. A hardware wallet never ever connects to the internet and never can. It will always go through a computer, the keys can be generated by it's seed and it's security is a lot better then some app on some phone (think of Trezor's pincode input). I would like to know what kind of steps you have taken to ensure security on the cold wallet phone (except disabling all communication).

I would prefer Trezor instead of Bither, but oh well, that is my personal opinion and subject to change. I do wish you all the best and good luck with this project!

In your opinion, a phone produced by Google, Apple, Samsung, LG, Moto is fail/brick/die/break? Then why billions of people using their sollutions every day?
The benefits of using a phone as a hardware wallet are:
1. Industry Standard;
2. Cheap (some android phones are even lower than $30);
3. Great user experience;

Thanks for your advice, and we will work hard to help people saving and using bitcoins easier and cheaper.

They will eventually. Most phone start to wear down after 1 year and a lot of phones stop working after 2-3 years. Also you skipped my security question, please answer it. ;)

The most important security for normal person is keeping the device offline. You can have ten diffenent locks on your door, does that make you feeling safer?
If you can prove that the expensive Trezor has higher industry standard than popular phones, then you win.  ;D

Exactly! You can have 10 locks on a device that has the ability to connect and it eventually will connect. Bither lock can't protect you. Only the device that can't leak keys by design can keep private keys inside.
You are right that people trust their phones with some personal data. The security of a phone is good enough to store your FB password, but I won't trust it with my live savings.
How does your app get in the phone if the phone never connects to anything? How do you update your app? If the phone was infected before your app was installed, how can you be sure that it is not communicating?
Security expert can verify simple single purpose communication protocol of Trezor and its code base. No single person can verify Anroid.

Basic problem is that a phone can die from one second to the next. I had it. Woke up with phone alarm. Went to bus station and wanted to look what time it is. No reaction at all. Mainboard died and i had to wait 2 weeks to get the phone with text: we where not able to restore the data. It was a Note 2 from Samsung. So i would never trust a phone! I had some bitcoins in my phonewallet but i had a complete backup of everything. So no loss.

All electronics can die without warning.   You should always have backup/seed for any device.

Bither Cold has automatically backup strategies, and you can easily backup your cold private keys on as many SD Cards as you want.
Also Bither Cold Wallet is easy to clone between your backup phones.
We will also provide improved functions for backup and recovery in the future version.

Thank you. :)

I had some bitcoins in my phonewallet but i had a complete backup of everything. So no loss.

All electronics can die without warning.   You should always have backup/seed for any device.

You are right.
Backup is very important. Currently Bither Cold provides automatically backup strategies, and we will improve this function in the future version.

Thanks for your advice, it's very helpful. :)

I really like your implementation of hot and cold mode. Will try when I clean up my old phone.

My primary worry is whether it contains malicious code, and secondly whether is has major bugs. I do not have the skills to verify the code and compile the apk myself, so I will only test on a clean phone and test with small change. I do appreciate your work and thanks for taking time to develop an open source android wallet.

As for cold mode, the only thing you should worry about is the private key generating part. If it's really an offline randomly generated private key and you never connect your phone to the internet, your private key would be completely safe.

Bither as an open source project, more and more people will contribute to it. Major bugs will be found and fixed soon if they exist. However they will never put your private keys on cold phone in danger, because the private keys are separated from the outer environment physically.

Now the source code is open, this will definitely help your team getting more trust from users.

Just curious, what's the story behind the name "bither"? It always reminds me of "bitcher" or "birther", which are not very good for your brand image  ;)

Our website is Bither.net, it comes from Bitcoin and Ethernet.
We consider Bitcoin and Ethernet as the most important inventions that make the world better. To show our honor to them we combined the two words and named our project Bither.

I'M GRIPPED BY DITHER AT THE THOUGHT OF USING BITHER.
yeah I rather put my wallet in a safe or external hard drive, you dont know who you can trust these days.  Im sure these type of services wont work especially with all the stuff that happen with people losing coins.
Since there is no FDA I wont let any company hold my coins.

Hello there!

I saw the video yesterday and really liked it, I have an iPhone without Bither network for cold and iPad for online Bither.

I wish I could incorporate my wallet private key paper in cold Bither.
Important to have the private keys generated Bither to keep as security if one day something happens to the iPhone (loss, theft, breakage, etc.).

Otherwise it's fantastic, congratulations!

Bither originally designed for Cold and Hot modes. Because Bither Cold Wallet runs on your backup phone (keep the phone offline), hackers, virus can not steal your bitoins.
On you daily phone (online), you can run Bither Hot Wallet and save small amount of bitcoins for daily use, and monitor your Bither Cold Wallet's bitcoin assets.

We have supported entering private keys on Bither Android v0.0.8, and will support the same function on Bither iOS v1.0.1 .
Bither iOS v1.0.1 will publish to App Store in next week (plus Apple's review time), and after that we will open source our ios code on github.
Also, we only support the compressed version of private key. You cannot enter the old uncompressed version.

Lateral observation --I happen to do that from time to time given my use of an iPad 1.

iOS 7 requirement leaves some users out.

I really don't know if that's either promoted by software development tools, or caused by lack of consideration on the side of developers. I presume all functionality could be achieved without demanding for such high OS version requirement.

Anyhow, that's why there are several systems to try out, with this one, for now, I must pass.

Sorry for the iOS version limitation. Because iOS 7 had so many new features on UI developing, we decided not to support iOS versions <=6 at the beginning.

Also, we don't suggest users use iPad 1 for Bither Wallet, because the iPad 1 doesn't have camera which means you can scan QR-Code with it.

Sorry for the inconvinience, maybe in later versions of Bither, we will try to support lower iOS versions.

Thanks for your advice.  :D

Sincerely,

Wen Hao (Bither Team)

I downloaded the new version of iOS and is perfect, thanks for incorporating the export and import of private key, now I'm using Bither.

In gratitude I have donated 0.1, wish it had been more, you are doing a brilliant job.

I take the opportunity to ask, when a signed transaction will your servers or do you use blockchain? (https://blockchain.info/pushtx).

Thank you very much for your great work!

I scanned the cold TX purse and not get the raw tx if your not a format.

I want to ask a favor if possible that you can get the raw tx as an option if we want to send from our purse or the https://blockchain.info/pushtx own

The reason is if some unlikely possibility, Bither hot wallet could not connect to the internet and can´t send tx

Thank you !!

I have seen that when sending a transaction from a wallet cold, the fee is always 0 and takes too long to confirm. Can you make the configuration work on commission wallet cold?

Best regards!

This situation is because we want you pay as less transaction fee as possible. In version 1.0.0, this logic is not good enough. In some situation it will cause a zero fee transaction being sent. This problem is solved in version 1.0.1 which can be downloaded from app store now.

Your transaction will be confirmed in the future eventually. We are sorry for your concern. Thank you for your feedback.

Currently, Bither is designed not to rely on any centralized service, so it doesn't use any services provided by blockchain.info.
Maybe in later version, we may consider to support exporting the formated raw transaction.

Thanks for asking  :)

In some situation, there may be zero fee transactions created by Bither.
We may change this setting in next version.

Sorry for the inconvinience, we are working on next version to make Bither better.

Thanks again for your kindly advice.

It would be fantastic, very useful and does not take much work to the raw crude. Definitely gives confidence and safely.

Congratulations, few recommendations can give!

I was struck that in your source code https://github.com/bither/bither-ios/blob/master/bither-ios/Api/BitherEngine.m config apparently a call to your server:
             userNetworkEngine = [[MKNetworkEngine alloc] initWithHostName: @ "bu.getcai.com" customHeaderFields: headerFields];
             statsNetworkEngine = [[MKNetworkEngine alloc] initWithHostName: @ "bs.getcai.com" customHeaderFields: headerFields];
             bitcoinNetworkEngine = [[MKNetworkEngine alloc] initWithHostName: @ "b.getcai.com" customHeaderFields: headerFields];

Being getcai.com your servers, I was curious to know if Bither could always work though your servers were down.

In the API I have not seen calls to your server, it may be true that work Bither networked bitcoin natively.

Could you give us a clue that these calls are?

Greetings!

The centralized services of b*.getcai.com are used for the following purposes:
1. Exchanges data (prices, k-line and so on).
2. Currency rates (USD, CNY, and may support more currency later).
3. Avatars' support (Currently only bither-android suports QR-Code with user defined avatar).
4. History transactions downloading API (When you monitor or remonitor the cold wallet, Bither will retrieve the history transactions of that Bitcoin address from b*.getcai.com, because we cannot efficiently get the histroy data from Bitcoin network. If we retrieve the history data from Bitcoin network, may cause the whole blockchain data downloading, mobile phone cannot support that much data space and network usage).

So, that means when our centralized services were down, you cannot get the current exchange rate or price info, you cannot retrieve the history transactions at that moment.
But the normal Bitcoin functions will still work well, you can send or recieve bitcoins, you will still be noticed when new transactions are coming.

Because we were working so hard on coding, we did not provide enough docments for users to understand more about our solution. Until now, we only finished two docs (you can find them on bither-android repo's wiki), one is "How to build bither-android?", the other is "Descriptions of QR-Code Format." .
In the next week, we will publish a new document about api information. After that, I will notice you ASAP, and you can take a look at that doc (and related source code) for more details.

Thanks again for your question. That helps us a lot. ;D

We will fix this issue in today, and publish v1.0.2 ASAP.

Thanks again. It's very nice of you.

One suggestion geek plan, imagine a cold wallet with multifirm, would be perfect for companies and funds that do not depend on a single employee or person. This addition of multifirm would be a perfect solution for corporations, partners, etc.

What do think? Do you dare to do it?

Have you plan to make it work for other coins like iXcoin IXC?
iXcoin IXC  ;) : a 3 years time tested coin, like Bitcoin but bravely ending mining on Oct 2014: it will be interesting to see what happens

We're busy developing Bither now. We currently don't have time to support other kinds of coins.

The source code of Bither is on Github. Anyone who's interested can edit the code and make their own wallet.

By the word "multifirm", do you mean multi signature addresses? We haven't considered a use case like you said.
Bither is mainly focused on normal people's personal usage of bitcoin. And we're making some stability improvements now.
Maybe we'll think about this later when we finish our current tasks.

I have talked to several companies that have to guard bitcoin bitcoin Bither of their customers and they love it!

For them it is important to multisignatures no person may have access to funds. If Bither has multifirm avatarbtc.es and other companies like it used because it is the best solution right now there to guard bitcoin safely.  ;D

Ok something is really weird with Bither,

So I have A private Key - Un-Encrypted - I also have a public Key obviously.

I have 2 phones.

Online = Hot << tried Scanning Watch only address bither Cold, I aimed the the camera on the Public QR code, Nothing happens, So I then thought.. AHHHH! maybe it only recognizes Bither cold wallet addresses, Then When I scan the QR code from the bither in the Hot wallet as a watch only wallet it will work. WELL GUESS WHAT? Check below

Offline = Cold << So I decided to try scan my private QR Code  from my offline COLD phone Bither, and again it doesn't scan, I can feel a vibration when it detects the QR Code, but it does absolutely nothing, just stays there like it still wants to scan something, the same thing that it does when I try to scan a watch address in the hot wallet..

-------------------------------

I dont get this, does bither only accept special QR codes or something??? I tried to scan the exact same address in Mycelium, within 2 seconds it scans with no problem at all, it also scans Bip38 and many other encryptions. So far I have not scanned a single address in Hot or cold Bither

Hello, I think I can answer myself. When I wanted to incorporate my purse Bither cold paper was not able to read the QR with the private address. It does nothing, only vibrates.

I discovered when entering the private address by hand, which is my private address uncompressed Bither is compressed only able to import private keys.

My solution was to import paper purse blockchain.info and generate a cool wallet in the smartphone and import the compressed private key and send the funds from blockchain.info:
http://offlinebitcoins.com/

IMPORTANT: Make cold backup in case your smartphone wallet breaks or the data is lost.

For now Bither Hot can only scan and monitor the Bither Cold's watch only QR Codes, not the address QR Code or any kind of private key back up QR Code. Bither Hot needs the public key provided to get all the related transactions from bitcoin networks. Only providing the address is not enough and providing the private key is unsafe. So we use our own QR Code content format and only contain the public key in it to communicate between the hot and the cold.

Here is the link to our QR Code content format
https://github.com/bither/bither-android/wiki/QR-Codes-content-format (https://github.com/bither/bither-android/wiki/QR-Codes-content-format)

And we plan to support importing private keys in BIP38 format in the future

Why not just a settings menu where you can add any exchange using their API. Just input the buy/sell/withdraw/deposit commands for the exchange you want to use.

 This is really confusing. I have a cold storage already made , I do not want to use a new one. Are you saying that I HAVE to create a new one and I cannot import a current cold storage? It has Import Private Key inside Cold wallet, When I show the private key QR code UN-Encrypted it does not detect it. I don't get it.

If there is a way I can please tell me the steps I need to do ? If there is no way I can import current Cold storage let me know thanks.

I have the Public Key- also known as Address

I have the Private Key for this Public Address key

I have the Bip38 version of the private key.

I have ALL relevant information to access this wallet, how can I use Bither in this circumstance without creating a fresh address.

You can import plain text private keys into Bither Cold (same format as bitcoin-qt dump private key command). Bither does not support BIP38 QR Code right now. And we will support it in the future.

Is it possible to add CoinBase as one of the exchanges?

Thanks for your suggestion, we may add Coinbase in future version.
 ;)

Why not just a settings menu where you can add any exchange using their API. Just input the buy/sell/withdraw/deposit commands for the exchange you want to use.

Maybe we will consider your suggestion in the future version of Bither.
Thanks a lot :D

Special thanks to Varmetric. We will support uncompressed private keys (old version) in the future.
Also we will support BIP38 ASAP.

Thanks :D

You have no access to vault. If Xapo goes, your BTC goes. Currently, it is better to use Bither or other wallets which support cold storage .

Sorry i posted here i clicked on a wrong link , the Wallet from here looks good but the design could be better.

You have access to the BTC , because you have the Privat Keys, you need to ask and you get them (Encrypted)

Hello,

I am fascinated to see Bither evolve and progress!

Is this signature format a Bither proprietary format, or a format compatible with other Bitcoin clients (which) like Electrum , Armory, ...?
(i.e. can Bither verify signature strings from client ABCXYZ, or vice versa?)

Is there any plan to incorporate "hidden private key" feature for "plausible deniability" to "Bither" wallet (as detailed in the OP of "https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=361386.0")?

This would be a very useful feature to protect against violent physical theft of bitcoins, and I think up to now it is not implemented in any wallet software yet.

Generally, everybody is concerned about good technical cryptographic protection (for very good reason of course!!). But we should also be concerned about PHYSICAL theft: What if someone points a gun at me to hand over my private keys?! --> There is a very simple and effective solution of how a user can give his private key to a thief while still keeping his life savings.

This scheme could be implemented in both BitherCold and BitherHot (in the latter case for the "hot private keys").

I am not going to repeat how it works exactly here, because I have detailed it in the link above, so please just refer to that post to understand the motivation and the solution, but in short, the basic principle goes like this:

  HiddenPrivateKey=sha256(NormalPrivateKey||MoreOrLessSimplePassword)

  • with "||" denoting simple "concatenation",
  • with "NormalPrivateKey" being the private key as it is stored in the Wallet software today, and
  • with "HiddenPrivateKey" being a temporary key calculated upon the user's selection of the NormalPrivateKey's Address and typing of a password. This hidden key should only reside in RAM memory temporarily while the user makes a transaction, and never leave any traces in flash memory. Obviously, the user should also not store the address of this hidden key in his list of watch-only-addresses, because this would render it less plausible to deny possession of that key.

  Clearly, if someone steals the phone and knows the PIN, he can access the NormalPrivateKey but has no idea that another (or several other) "HiddenPrivateKeys" even exist.

The method is good for BitherCold for evident reasons (theft protection), but also for BitherHot if I want to take some Bitcoins with me on a journey but don't want to loose them all if I move with my smartphone into an unsecure neighborhood and get robbed...

Dear crazyearner,

There are Address Tag(Label) function on Bither iOS/Android. So you can add tags to your addresses. But currently, desktop version does not support this, we may add this feature in future release.
Also, we may provide more functions on addresses sort order.

Thanks for your feedback.

I've just installed the android version and it looks pretty good, but I don't like that I have to use the build-in keyboard. I'm extremely used to SwiftKey and creating a good password was hard because all the special characters are two taps away (and I use a lot of them in combination with letters). SwiftKey doesn't have this issue.

EDIT: Also this doesn't look right. The "+"-button overlaps the text of the exchange the price is from.

Would be a good idea for it to go into that section but unknown if mods will move it into their. Sent pm to gmaxwell see what the response is if  good enough to support being in that section or weather or not needs to stay in project development.

Dear Mitchełł,

There are so many third parties' keyboards/input methods on Android, and some of them are even cloud services. So for security reason, we decide to develop our own keyboard/input method, and not to rely on users' environment.

About the "+" button, it does overlap some part of the screen, and we may consider to improve this or hide this button in some circumstances in future release.

Thanks for your feedbak  :)

Any developments for updates on Windows desktop wallet. Do you guys do other crypto at all? would love to see something like this made for other cryptos to make a multi wallet version in the future and dominate where others fail :)

We may consider to working on improving our desktop version as possible as we can, and also we may think about other cryptos too.

Thanks  :D

The wallet looks very nice and has good functionality.
I also like that it is available for all the most common platforms.
You should definitely continue to work on it!

But I don't think it wins over hardware wallets in terms of cold storage.
You comparison looks biased.

The temptation to go online with the cold storage phone at some point in time is just too big.
And the price and availability is no argument anymore now that you could get a ledger hardware wallet for 15 Euros (incl. shipping) within a few days.
(I'm not affiliated with Ledger Wallet)

And what about size and battery?
Smart phones are bigger and heavier than hardware wallets and you have to charge them every day (especially if you use an old phone were the battery is not that good anymore)
And you can be sure the battery is empty just when you want to do that payment. ;-)

On the cold phone, you should make the phone offline, and then switch to the cold mode after you newly installed Bither. You can find the switch option in the option page if you have not create addresses.

Then you can follow the steps from these documents to try the cold/hot wallet functions : https://github.com/bither/bither-doc

This is using Windows version of wallet. So seems can not send coins from wallet been like this for last 2 days. Sends transaction shows in wallet. Go to exchange shows it their in unconfirmed awaiting to process and never processes and gets confirmed. Whats going on?

Also on blockchain getting following error with transaction too.

Transaction rejected by our node. Reason: Transaction was previously accepted but has been pruned from our database.

How to recover HD account from seed in Bither?
Import --> From HD Account Phrase.

And what is "HDM Recovery"?

HDM = HD + Multisig.

- 2/3 Multisig;
- 3 keys (Cold, Hot, Server) all based on HD;
- XRandom seeds for HD;
- Access server API via BitID technology;
- HD's convenience + Multisig's safety;
- Easy to backup (only need HDM Cold seed);
- Bither's Cold/Hot modes with XRandom are the best mates with HDM;-TXs are signed based on RFC6979 to ensure security;
- Parent pub keys of each HD chain won’t leave its own device (Cold, Hot, Server). No ways to leak;
- BIP16, BIP32, BIP39, BIP44, BitID, RFC6979, XRandom, Bither (Cold/Hot)

Bither only support one HD account, so if you already have one, there will be no import HD option.

Currently we remove the HDM options, the HDM recovery option is only used for old HDM users, and we may close this option too in the future.

And I could see this is a good wallet with various features, including export private keys, right?
You need to advertise - spread the words about this bither wallet.
I will download and test this wallet for sure, but may I ask some questions afterwards?
- it seems that I can send-receive bch through bither wallet? Or it just works for bitpie in order to transact bch.

I have installed Bitpie too and it is mandatory to specify a bitpie bch address for withdraw. Once I enter my bch address (generated via BitPie) and try to create transaction first it displays amount and transfer fee, then upon clicking OK it says -25Missing inputs under yellow bar.

Do you have any ideas to troubleshoot this issue?

This wallet has been around since 2014 and it supports most of the forks. It does seem a bit shifty though and I am worried about using it. Does anyone use this on a daily basis? Do they have any problems getting coins in and out of it? I like Coinomi's features but they don't support all the forks.

About one week ago, i found a project who use the same name of your company. It's called Bither Platform (https://bitherplatform.io/). The campany lunched its ANN thread (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5109921.0) here in the forum since February 14, 2019, when the website has been created since second quarter of 2018 (according to the roadmap displayed in the ANN).
I didn't think that it was intended to pick this name for their platform, so i just pointed it out in their main thread:
@OP

I think some basic elements should be discussed before the lunch of your product. Here am pointing about the name you choosed for your project: "Bither"
Commonly known that it's important to pick the good name for a project that can be used internally. May be it's the important part of a company's brand, this is why it should be unique and expressive.

Unfortunately, the name you choosed is the name of a widely known compagny. Did you ever hear about Bither Wallet ?
Bither Wallet is in the market since 2014, and by searching the keyword #bither in any search engine, first results are all about the wallet compagny. You can check this by yourself if you want.
Here some useful links for the Bither wallet:
Website : http://bither.net
Google Play : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.bither
Apple App Store : https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/bither/id899478936

Twitter : @bithernet
Bitcointalk: [ANN] Bither - simple&secure Bitcoin wallet.(List 3 BITHD products) (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=606238.)

Sadly, i can conclude that you haven't done any branding exercises before choosing that name. Or maybe it's intended to pick the name, no?
One week passed and no one answered, this is why am posting about it here.

Hi dear Bitpie user,
First, you don't need to worry about your asset security.
The reason why can't see the balance is your Bither has not synchronized the blocks data.

Solution1:
Please go to "More"->"Blocks", and wait, until the syncing over. See the below pic:

https://i.imgur.com/ZGda7yo.png

Solution 2:
You never meet the above problem in Bitpie. Bitpie Wallet is a new generation of wallet developed by us following bither. It is multi-chain, much easier than Bither to use and has exchange module.  We strongly recommend you to have a try. (Download: https://bitpie.com/)
You are free to create a new account OR import seeds/ private keys into Bitpie Wallet.
Read this: How to Import HD Seed Phrases/Private Key into Bitpie Wallet

If you still can't solve the problem. Our admin is availble on telegram: https://t.me/BitpieInternational. You can provide more details(like screenshots) on telegram to him for assisting you solving the problem.

P.S. It's suggested to use Bither android version rather than the desktop one, since the desktop version update is lagging behind the android one. We just released a new version v1.8.6; it was tuned for the performance of importing private keys and reloading transaction data. Please ensure you have updated to the newest version (download: https://bither.net/).
