both of the series mentioned above has many similarities b/w them .
I'm not talking about Books here I'm talking about the Movie series.

My vote goes to Lord of the rings too..! it is so much fun to watch.. harry potter is good but not as good as LOTR..

i went with lord of the rings because harry potter is to kiddy for me. i also hate how that main wizard guy, in the early movies at least, told the students not to do something. then harry potter and co. do it. the wizard guy then rewards them for breaking the rules, npnp.

Comparing apples and oranges. The LotR story was created around the language, plot, landscapes. The plot isn't based around any character per se. In reality you could toss in another dozen heroes, change the plot, and the story will still be amazing.


Harry Potter on the other hand is a story based around a centralized character and his friends. It's written to tell the story of one person, and a few followers. That's it.


Personally, I prefer the more personalized story as it goes into greater personal detail. LotR has way, way much going on everywhere to follow the story deeply.

I like Harry potter because the story is more easy to understand and interesting.

Harry Potter i had watched all the sequels and it is indeed fantastic.

I've never been able to sit through LotR. Didn't like the Potter movies, but I enjoyed the books when I was younger, so I'll go with that because I sat through them. :D

It doesn't matter which series you like more, go and read their books. There are so many plots and side stories missed out in the adaptations.

 It's not fair to compare the greatest fantasy movie of all time to a movie where some kids with magical powers are jiggling with their wooden sticks... lol just kidding, absolutely love both of these series

Its hard to put all plots and side stories in a 3hour movie..! but they did it in both the movies to best possible level..! although they are lil messed up when compared to books but still the best efforts ..

LOTR: written by a brilliant academic. History is in a rich and inovative universe, deeply worked(he even made languages for the world). Universe based on european myths, with very in deep messages, especially if you are christian. Well written and descritibe, what gives substance to the world and to the history and makes many people says it is too boring because it is so descritive. One of the greatest books written in english


Harry Potter: writter without any relevant real world work in any area, self-contraditory world, no inovations nor good absortion of cultural elements, characters not developed in depth, poor language for 12 yo people, and in some decades at most will be forgotten.

Lord of the Rings is MUCH better than Harry Potter in every aspect except maybe protagonist... but you could make the argument that there is more than one protagonist. I mean there are about 3 to 4 different story lines I find that far more interesting that harry being the one and only protagonist .

I'll go for the Lord of the Rings. Harry Potter in my opinion is vastly over-hyped and overrated. I had never liked it. The kids might vote for Harry Potter, but it is their choice.

LOTS was best for me then HP.

I think both of them are equal in their own right. They were written in different times, different environments and circumstances -both are great reads, but still unique in their style and meaning.

ok for once forget about the Books.. as they don't have any kind of comparison between them.. and talk about the Movie series..

Lord of the Rings is one the best fantasy movie I've ever watched, so much better than Harry Potter.

But it's only a test, to see if they are willing to do the things they judge to be right, even at the risk of being punished! That's actually a great way to teach.

Did not really like the movies of Lord of the Rings.  The guy from clerks 2 sums it up where states Lord of the Rings is just abunch of walking and nothing more.

Basically this 3 part movie should have been able to cut down into 1 clip, where Gandolf flies his big ass butterfly to Mordor, has Frodo throw the ring in, end of movie.

The new lord of the rings movies are better so far now....still not as good as the potter movies though unfortunately.

Had to vote LOTR. Like Dumbledore, Gandalf had his fingers in a lot of pies. Unlike Dumbledore, he didn't turn into a whiner when facing his own death. He just blasted (fool-of-a)-TOOK that Balrog and came back to take on Saruman too.

Nope both rubbish. Star wars the 3 original films (Star Wars,  Empire Strikes Back (the best)  and Return of the Jedi (not so good)).

Calling a fantasy movie rubbish and jumping to third one is obviously rubbish..! although i like LOTR more than Harry Potter but i won't call Harry Potter rubbish simply because it has so much efforts behind it..! but if you want I can add Star Wars to the options :) should I ?

Having read LOTR and Hobbit as a kid I had to say LOTRO was better.

I did find Potter entertaining and I'll probably have my kids read it but I think it's not in the same league as LOTR.

I read the books for both series and saw the movies. The LOTR books/movies are just so much more epic. I enjoy both worlds though.

I think overall

Harry Potter is for kid to adult
because on first HP story about magic,fun,& fantasy. So it was easy to understand
but at the end, the stories go deep (LOVE,battle,many chit chat)

Lord of the Ring is for teen to adult
From the series of LoTR , it already show serious story (need attention to follow the story)

It is such an epic both in books and in movies.

Although harry potter is very nice, LOTR is much better IMO. Actually I don't see that much in common between them, anyway.

To be fair I have not read the entire series of Lord of the rings, just couldn't get into them very much.

The movies though, Harry potter were better IMO. 

Basically I thought the Lord of the rings movie there was no Character Development, Besides Sam falling in love with Frodo.

The villains were all pretty much nasty orcs, and then a wizard who is bad who doesn't really use any magic ever.

Then it took 3 3 hour movies for them to walk and talk about the ring, when in reality Gandolf should have called his butterfly friends, and rode them, dropped the ring in the fire, end of movie, 10 minutes.

Yeah, the character developpment in the movie is quite bad when compared to the books.

And FYI, Gandalf could not call his eagle friends because the flying nazguls would have easily chopped them as soon as they would have entered Sauron's land :)

but sadly they compared it with Starwars not to a kid darama. And You know why Gandalf didn't called Eagles watch the movie again you might get it.

Yes I did quote it from clerks 2, they have a great point.  Fine, they couldn't fly directly into the fire, but they could have landed close by.  Had a distraction at the front, bloop, ring goes into the fire.

Or, even better they had this army of undead.  They knew that he could claim the sword from the beginning, and control the army.  He waits for 2 movies before he decides to?  He could have called them up, killed everything.  Then had frodo on red carpet to the fire, end of movie, 20 minutes.

Starwars was a lot better than Lord of the rings...?  Why wouldn't they try to compare it with that...unfortunately they couldn't pull it off

I don't like when people compare movies, but if asked I'd say that I prefer LOTR. And that's because it's a movie that doesn't have a teenage target audience.

LOTR much better, more action.  :D

Well they appeal to different audiences at their base.  LOTR appeals to 80 and downward from when JKR wrote the material.  HP appeals to teenagers and up.  Somewhere in the middle you'll find a 50/50 mix.

What? how can you even compare these? they are on total different subjects and also total different levels. Lord of the rings out classes harry potter by a large margin.

I liked both stories.
It looks HP is more for teenagers, and Lord of the Rings for older people, but still both stories are fantastic, with very deep messages about goodness and serving community, friendship, love etc.
Both stories talking about fantasy world but in the same time give us very valuable lesson about everyday life and goals...
If I will have children, I will read to them both stories.

I think a lot of this question should have been based on the movies/or books.  I personally didn't enjoy the lord of the ring movies...they were sort of boring and lacked story development, explanations, and character development.

I never read the books so I am not sure how it compares to Harry Potter. 

I like action, my vote goes to Lord of the Rings.

25.4% still thinks that HP is better than LOTR so I can compare.
And have enough reasons to compare movies ,like there are few characters in both the movies which are similar to each other. I'm not comparing books here as neither of the movie does any justice to books, if you'll read LOTR you'll realize there is so much difference b/w Character in the movie and the book itself.

You telling me LOTR lacked story development, watch it again.. maybe you'll change your opinion. I know its a long 15 hour movie [going through all the parts] but well worth it.

I gotta say, Gandalf that old wizard dude knows how to enjoy a good smoke. He has this kick-ass pipe, man. I'd really like to know, what he smokes! Gotta be some special wizard stuff, ya know!

Corrupt authority figures.
Racism and Elitism (the Malfoys)
Ethical treatment of animals (without being preachy)
And a lot of drama between characters.

The list goes on.

Harry Potter loses a lot of points (IMO) for not being honest with use of source material that has been copied and pasted into the saga. Sure you can use all these Ancient Greek mythical creatures but at least say something about them being Greek! So it goes for everything else that is not original but has been pasted into this Saga.



The HP series is much more intelligent than it gets credit for. Meanwhile, the Lord of the rings is basically fight-scene porn (a good thing) interspersed with an amazing fictional world and story.

I thoroughly enjoyed both.

Lord of the rings has slightly better visuals (IMO) than Harry Potter. But HP also has amazing visuals (with the exception of the first movie).

That's really not a fair comparison. I like both series, but I don't compare them to each other, because they are too different. The Lord of the Rings trilogy was written for adults, the Harry Potter series is, at its core, a children's series. I would also argue that Rowling created a very complete universe

Makes it a tough choice.  I love LOTR better, but good god that girls is made of the stuff of my dreams.

Still, LOTR wins for enjoyability.  Don't get me wrong, Harry Potter is a fantastic series, it just lacks the incredible action scenes of epic size.  No wizzy fizzly things flying around to hurt each other, just swords and some seriously awesome wizardry.

The Lord of the Rings universe is huge and character background is extremely detailed. The films are impressive BUT not very appealing to all age groups and genders. Harry Potter far more enjoyable to the general cinema goers, I could imagine grand parents taking kids to the cinema to watch Harry Potter and not Lord of the Rings.

And harry potter is not less interesting. we watched how he grew from a young child until he can be strong and save the world. but, I felt the story when Harry's search for the Horcruxes seemed forced and too hasty.

LOTR adaptation was decent, it did follow the plot broadly and got the key points correct.

Harry Potter was just a massacre of the storyline. I hate those films with a passion.

Harry Potter is more like a movie for kids, LOTR is better a great history, has epic moments, the battles, the magic fights of Gandlalf were 100 times better than the harry potter
