Title: beginner trying to get my feet wet
Post by: golfwidow on May 27, 2014, 02:02:04 AM
I just bought a cheap  ASIC block erupter USB to get started mining. I'm not trying to make a fortune, just to figure the whole thing out. I'd like to run it on a windows 7 desktop that we leave on all the time anyway. Since it's been a "coon's age" since I used any command prompts, is there a miner with a GUI that would work with my ASIC USB? I tried Easy Miner, but it shows "no devices". There is precious little info out there geared to the newbie who isn't trying to run a "farm" full of miners, so any help would be appreciated!

I managed to get up and running on BitMinter, and have actually even earned some (fractional) coins!  ;D I had to uninstall/reinstall a driver, but otherwise it was very easy. Looking forward to learning more and maybe trying other pools. BitMinter has my recommendation for beginners!

Glad you got it up and running. As another poster mentioned, these types of questions will probably gather more responses in one of the mining support sub-forum. Good luck!

As others said, try to ask questions in the mining section of the forum, in the meantime take a look at
this site which will help you to get started:

Congrats on setting up your first miner it won't make to many Bitcoins but it is nice as a hobby tool to learn about Bitcoin
If you want to take a gander at how much you are likely to generate and factor in costs feel free to use a calculator like this one

Also welcome to Bitcoin

BR

240 for Sr. Member.
480 for Hero Member.

Or check the the full list, plus the way activity is calculated:
The activity number is determined in this way:
time = number of two-week periods in which you've posted since your registration
activity = min(time * 14, posts)

Activity is updated every 30 minutes.

The new membergroup limits work like this:
GroupRequirement
Brand New0 posts
Newbie(none)
Jr. Memberactivity: 30
Memberactivity: 60
Full Memberactivity: 120
Sr. Memberactivity: 240
Hero Memberactivity: 480

I'm not 100% sure that the membergroups work correctly. Tell me if you see any bugs.

I was going to ask something related to signature questions like this, regarded why some signatures have bold colors and some dont.

Thanks for this info.
