Title: browser extensions Post by: Justin00 on June 06, 2014, 02:52:20 PM Just wondering what browser addons + extensions folks use for security related purposes..
I use firefox + do not track + https everywhere + noscript. kind of like what you get with Tor browser bundle. I think do not track works pretty well.. no script gets used to, but its great in the long run. Anything I am missing ??? Title: Re: browser extensions Post by: Muhammed Zakir on June 06, 2014, 02:54:19 PM I didn't understand what you said ::) .
Title: Re: browser extensions Post by: ahmedjadoon on June 06, 2014, 03:02:06 PM I didn't understand what you said ::) . I think these " do not track + https everywhere + noscript." are Firefox security related addons. He is asking what addons others use for this.Title: Re: browser extensions Post by: newflesh on June 06, 2014, 03:20:52 PM Would recommend using Ghostery and Self Destructing Cookies.
Title: Re: browser extensions Post by: Justin00 on June 06, 2014, 03:40:26 PM ^^ I'll look into that thanks.
do not track is pretty cool I must say, saves those evil companes from getting my real email addy.. amazing as well what the banks track.. amazing/concerning that is ! Title: Re: browser extensions Post by: KimNam on June 06, 2014, 04:58:42 PM i used ghostery and block almost everything
Blocking 1807 out of 1908 trackers ;D advertising, analytics, beacons, privacy, widget sometimes i can't load comment section in some websites ;D Title: Re: browser extensions Post by: rohnearner on June 06, 2014, 05:20:56 PM Just wondering what browser addons + extensions folks use for security related purposes.. Use Disconnect (https://disconnect.me/) to stop everyone from tracking you. I use Disconnect Https+noscript with Firefox and always prefer Private Window ModeI use firefox + do not track + https everywhere + noscript. kind of like what you get with Tor browser bundle. I think do not track works pretty well.. no script gets used to, but its great in the long run. Anything I am missing ??? Title: Re: browser extensions Post by: Foxpup on June 07, 2014, 01:30:59 AM Adblock Plus, HTTPS Everywhere, Modify Headers, QuickJava, RefControl, Torbutton.
Title: Re: browser extensions Post by: bitbaby on June 07, 2014, 01:37:48 AM Do these extensions/addons really provide any protection, I don't use any of them and now I think maybe I should.
What sort of attacks or privacy do these provide? Title: Re: browser extensions Post by: Malin Keshar on June 07, 2014, 02:05:59 AM I'm lazy and only use addblock, but not in all browsers I use. Not sure if can be considered a security extension, but it block some adds with virus, so..
When I want anonymity and not be tracked, I just go to tor browser bundle. Title: Re: browser extensions Post by: Justin00 on June 07, 2014, 09:41:08 AM do no track (or similar) stops sites tracking you via cookies and other means, it also gives you a real but wierd email account.. so you dont have to use your own.
noscript blocks javascript, its a pain at times, but u get used to it. https everywhere makes you go via https where possible.. adblock stops ads foxpop: what does refcontrol do ? basically all of the above, except adblock and refcontrol is included with tor browser bundle, but i use them on my normal pc with firefox. makes me feel somwhat safer :) wasn't a fan but now i quite like them. but yeah noscript can be annoying if you are abit of a novice (and forget its on lol) Do these extensions/addons really provide any protection, I don't use any of them and now I think maybe I should. What sort of attacks or privacy do these provide? Title: Re: browser extensions Post by: Este Nuno on June 07, 2014, 10:57:36 AM On Chrome the only two non google extensions I'm currently using are Reddit Enhancement Suite(which is a must imo if you read reddit) and KryptoKit which is pretty great for bitcoin stuff and sending and receiving encrypted messages. Not that I have much to talk about that needs to be encrypted, but to have the option if the need were to arise is nice to have.
Title: Re: browser extensions Post by: alani123 on June 07, 2014, 11:11:28 AM There's a eff tool that checks how unique and trackabe your browser is. Surely an interesting test to take.
https://panopticlick.eff.org Also for extra privacy you could use disconnect search. https://disconnect.me/search Title: Re: browser extensions Post by: Muhammed Zakir on June 07, 2014, 11:18:01 AM On Chrome the only two non google extensions I'm currently using are Reddit Enhancement Suite(which is a must imo if you read reddit) and KryptoKit which is pretty great for bitcoin stuff and sending and receiving encrypted messages. A couple of weeks ago Chrome blocked KryptoKit by mistake, but they realised their error and re enabled it again pretty quickly. It's a pretty good app. It's very easy to check the price of bitcoin with it and it also has all the latest headlines. And I believe it's made by some trusted members of the bitcoin community, so not much to worry about there. Title: Re: browser extensions Post by: Foxpup on June 08, 2014, 08:24:04 AM foxpop: what does refcontrol do ? Controls the Referer header sent by the browser on a per-site basis. For maximum privacy, you should just configure the browser to not send the Referer header at all, but some sites won't work without it (in violation of the HTTP standard). RefControl allows setting a custom referrer for sites that require one.Title: Re: browser extensions Post by: SirChiko on June 08, 2014, 08:48:09 AM I use only adblock ::)
Title: Re: browser extensions Post by: 1211 on June 08, 2014, 09:23:43 AM I am using adblock and lastpass. I have great experience with those extensions.
Title: Re: browser extensions Post by: bitsmichel on June 08, 2014, 10:39:53 AM Be careful of extensions, many people got hacked that way. True, I have read about people losing btc because of a chrome extension. Sometimes they do contain spyware, the best thing to do is to use them on another device that does not keep your btc, or, inspect the source code. Title: Re: browser extensions Post by: Justin00 on June 08, 2014, 12:20:10 PM ah that sounds exactly what I need for something I have in mind.
thanks for that mate I will try it out. foxpop: what does refcontrol do ? Controls the Referer header sent by the browser on a per-site basis. If you are going to fall for everything out there without doing a basic research and using your brain before getting into something no extension and or security or privacy feature can save you. Nothing can save you if you think you are totally secure after installing some addons. |
