Title: How much do you pay for power?
Post by: glitch003 on February 17, 2012, 12:57:36 AM
How much do you pay for power and where do you live?  I'll start:

$0.1102 per KWH in Tallahassee, FL USA

Link here: http://www.talgov.com/you/customer/helpful/rates.cfm?src=reselec (http://www.talgov.com/you/customer/helpful/rates.cfm?src=reselec)

Edit: My power is flat rate residential.  Please include details of your pricing structure if it's not flat rate.

In some areas there is tiered pricing based on consumption.   In other areas there is peak/off peak pricing.   And there is commercial / residential status as well.

So the responses might be more useful if more details about the rate were given.

Good point.  This is why I also linked to my utility services website.  I'll edit my post  :)

But tell us, how much do you pay for power?

.056 / kwh during the winter
.115 / kwh 6/1 - 10/1

In USD.

Residential rate in
St. Louis, MO

Fortunately I have a heat pump, so the neighbors don't realize I'm actually running the A/C anytime it gets above 40 :)   Gonna have to figure out the best undervolts come June 1st tho....

This past month I unfortunately hit Tier 5 with Southern California Edison because I was setting a couple of rigs at home and testing for stability.  Tier 5 costs me $0.39/KWH  >:(  Normally I only mine on one main PC at home with a 6950 which puts me into Tier 4 (more than 340KWH) which costs $0.30 (this is with the winter discount pricing).  Obviously I'm losing money mining at home, but my main rig would be on anyways pulling 100 watts as a file server part of the time.  I don't think anybody can mine in CA without having free electricity  :P

Wow, power in CA is expensive.  Where do you get free/cheap power from for your not-at-home rigs?

Wife has an office she's paying $4k a month for rent and utilities.  She also put $200K of upgrades into the office - so I'm just trying to get a little more out of it lol.  I just hope I don't burn the place down with my open air rigs - some sitting on cardboard boxes  ;D  I will have to shut down some rigs in the summer since AC is only on during business hours and it gets up to 105F sometimes here in the summer.

Ditto.  SCE prices are ridiculous.  Part of LA runs on LADWP and it is much better:  $.07-.12/KWH

.15/kwh in maine. It cost me less with southern california edison when I lived there! The only advantage here is unlike SCE the rape stick doesn't come out once you go above a certain # of kwh. One would think due to the proximity to Quebec's hydro power we'd share in on some of those sweet .05-.06 rates, but unfortunately no such luck.

The only way to get $0.15 for Southern California Edison is to stay in Tier 1 (Tier 2 is $0.19/KWH).  To stay in tier 1 you can't have a refrigerator.  When my wife lived alone in an apartment in 2006 she was in Tier 2 and she was home only to sleep and shower pretty much (maybe 1 or 2 hours of a compact florescent a day - she's pretty cheap).  Spend just 300 KWH and you're already in Tier 4.  I wonder how much businesses get nailed by SCE  :o

So.Cal Edison's residential tier system is pretty ridiculous and definitely non-conducive to mining.  For business, the tiers work a little differently than residential (based on peak power demand).  The first tier goes up to 20kw I believe and is $.17/kwh.  I tried to have the garage classified as a 'business' and get the bus rate, but no dice.  :(

300kwh was still in tier 1 where I was. Tier1 went up to 450kwh or so. In the summer I used about 400-450kwh a month on average running AC when I was home and fridge, kept computer off when I was gone. The difference was hot water was provided by the landlord. Electric hot water can drive the bill up a bit. The tiers were different during the winter season, I think that is when it may have been 300kwh per month for tier 1. They've probably raised the rates/restructured the tiers since I was there, I don't remember it being .15/kwh in tier 1.

Well, my power bill is different. It has several tiers.(although my first 200 kwh are cheaper than 200 kwh more, and if there are more than 400 kwh then the rest is priced higher).

First 200 kwh: 0.096 VEF/kwh. Divide by 8.6 VEF/USD at unofficial rate, and it's 0.011$/kwh. The official rate is 4.3 VEF/USD, but it's restricted by the government.

Second 200 kwh tier(after you consume 200 kwh, this is applied after your 200 kwh and before 400 kwh)
0.108 VEF/kWh --->0.0125 $/kwh

The remaining kwh, after 400 kwh are charged at 0.118 VEF/kwh -----> 0.013$/kwh

So, it's ultra cheap. It's mostly(70%) hydroelectric power.

It says on his user page he's from Venezuela, I wonder if he was responsible for the shortages last year?
http://oilprice.com/Energy/Energy-General/Oil-Rich-Venezuelas-Electricity-Shortfalls-Lose-Economy-80-Billion.html

The problem with having such low rates is that you then have entire week-long periods where you have a shortage and no electricity at all. Since most of it is water-powered, it's not like they can just fire up another coal generator and get more electricity in the system or anything... So yeah, $.01/kWh, with a run time of maybe 16 hours/day on average throughout the year... Still quite a bit cheaper and maybe justifiable, anyone want to sneak a couple pallets of FPGAs into the country and set up a shop?

Oh, and I pay $.05/kWh this winter, it'll go up to $.12kWh this summer, I think average is like $.08/kWh, supposedly. I hope to be primarily FPGA mining by May/June.

The shortage was on mid-2010, as we had a drought, and our main hydroelectric dam(Guri Dam) was reaching minimum water level(crisis was averted by like 10 meters of water, it was a close call), so we had 3 hour planned blackouts every day, for rationing. In 2011 we had several unplanned blackouts due to lack of maintenance of the grid. Even the government said once that an iguana ate some wires in an official statement. I started mining in May 2011, the crisis was solved by then.

Now we don't have long blackouts, most of them are 5-10 minutes power failures like once a month, and I have an UPS with two 62AH batteries for that.

Anyway, if you're interested in getting some FPGA's here, I'm open to all business ventures.

NorCal SF bay area.
Winter:
Tier1 0-579 0.13 kwh
Tier2 580-753 0.15 kwh
Tier3 754-1158 0.30 kwh
Tier 4 1159+ 0.34 kwh

Summer same prices but different limits
t1: 0-309
t2: 310-402
t3: 406-618
t4: 619+

Not able to mine here. However if I were super poor I could get CARE, which is reduced rates for low income households. Not poor enough though :\

I just joined a budget plan with my power company which bills me $84/month regardless of usage :D
Was this an option with your power company you could sign up for in place of a regular per kW pricing?  Meaning that you could pick between the two plans?

I don't pay anything for power.

But my dorm does get a little warm sometimes.

it wasn't offered to me when I started service, I got a bill last month for over $400 and I called them and the guy I spoke with said "you should have signed up for our budget plan, it's a flat rate of $84/mo no matter how much you use", I informed him that the original sales rep was an idiot and never offered me that deal

Wake up bro, and read the fine print !
There are no deals like that, just think about it !  :o
What company would charge you less, if they can rip you off  :D
"Budget plan" means you have a measly monthly quota of energy, which won't be enough for you, judging by your previous bill.
And by this: "it's a flat rate of $84/mo no matter how much you use", the sales rep meant you'll be charged that 84 bucks every time, no matter if you exhausted the quota or not.

Wake up !

Those fractions add up.

It's 14.5 cents (plus some fractions) per kW/h in Los Angeles.

Here in Lawrence, KS:

For the months of October through May:
$0.057743 per kWh for the first 500 kWh
$0.057743 per kWh for the next 400 kWh
$0.045896 per kWh for all additional kWh

For the months of June through September:
$0.057743 per kWh for the first 500 kWh
$0.057743 per kWh for the next 400 kWh
$0.071091 per kWh for all additional kWh

So my worst-case is $.60 a day to run my 7970, if I calculate that right.  But I suck at power calculations.  I always miss a decimal point or something.

Northern Utah

May-September
8.4004¢ per kWh first 400 kWh
10.3481¢ per kWh next 600 kWh
12.8709¢ per kWh all additional kWh

Oct-April
8.7035¢ per kWh all kWh

http://www.rockymountainpower.net/content/dam/rocky_mountain_power/doc/About_Us/Rates_and_Regulation/Utah/Approved_Tariffs/Rate_Schedules/Residential_Service.pdf

Even at $0.075 for residential and $0.08 for small business the "hidden tax" for power can be substantial.

Here is the added charges for Alberta Power Users.

Residential

Distribution (http://www.epcor.com/power/rates-tariffs/DistributionAccessServiceTariffs/DistributionAccessServiceTariff-2011-11.pdf)   $0.51906 per day base fee of  $17.13 on a 33 Day billing cycle.
                         $0.00626 per kWh

Transmission (http://www.epcor.com/power/rates-tariffs/SystemAccessServiceTariff/SystemAccessServiceTariff-2012-01.pdf)    $0.02135 per kWh
Rider K (http://www.auc.ab.ca/utility-sector/rates-and-tariffs/Documents/Electricity/EPCOR%20Edmonton/Distribution_Transmission/EPCOR_transmission_true_up_eff_jan_1_2012.pdf)               $0.0058 per kWh

Local Access Fee (http://www.epcor.com/power/rates-tariffs/MiscellaneousDocuments/LocalAccessFee-RetailersNotice-2011-01.pdf) $0.0066 per kWh

This adds $0.04 per kWh on top of your $0.075 rate. Making your residential rate $0.115 Average for 25 GH/sec with 67 GPU's eats up just over 11kWh x 24h = 264kWh per day on a 33 day billing cycle eats up 8712kWh a month.

Factor in the $6.14 "admin" charge and you have a monthly bill of $1025.15 @ residential rates.

**********************************************************

Small Business Rates

Distribution (http://www.epcor.com/power/rates-tariffs/DistributionAccessServiceTariffs/DistributionAccessServiceTariff-2011-11.pdf)    $0.28839 per day base fee of  $9.52 on a 33 Day billing cycle.
                         $0.02081 per kWh

Transmission (http://www.epcor.com/power/rates-tariffs/SystemAccessServiceTariff/SystemAccessServiceTariff-2012-01.pdf)   $0.02216 per kWh
Rider K (http://www.auc.ab.ca/utility-sector/rates-and-tariffs/Documents/Electricity/EPCOR%20Edmonton/Distribution_Transmission/EPCOR_transmission_true_up_eff_jan_1_2012.pdf)              $0.0058 per kWh

Local Access Fee (http://www.epcor.com/power/rates-tariffs/MiscellaneousDocuments/LocalAccessFee-RetailersNotice-2011-01.pdf) $0.0066 per kWh

This adds $0.05537 per kWh on top of your $0.08 rate. Making your residential rate $0.13537 Average for 25 GH/sec with 67 GPU's eats up just over 11kWh x 24h = 264kWh per day on a 33 day billing cycle eats up 8712kWh a month.

Factor in the $6.49 "admin" charge and you have a monthly bill of $1195.35 @ Small Business Rates.

"Note"

The local access fee is not regulated by the AUC, this is a charge leveied by the City of Edmonton and is passed on by the Distributor. This targets renters to pay a form of property tax instead of increasing property tax for the property owners. All combined not including the per day distribution rate, increases rates by $0.05537 per kWh.

My cost is $0.0985 per kWh and there there is that damned tax added on top of that ... 13%  And, of course, a monthly service charge for the privelage of having electricity which is currently $19.73

At least in the winter months the heat from the gpu keeps the basement nice and warm  :)

In the UK and just changed providers so now paying approx $0.15 per kWh.  I was paying quite a bit more.  Last year I was paying nothing and mining like crazy but due to the current difficulty level it makes mining borderline profitable at present.

I can offer (GPU-)miner-housing at 12 Eurocent/kWh "all inclusive" (rent for space, internet, fresh-air-cooling) in Austria, near Graz. Could be useful especially for miners from European Union... if you're interested, send a PM to discuss further details.

How in the world do you survive on less than 340kWh/month?!?!?! Looking through my 2012 bills, my lowest usage was 580kWh/month before mining, highest was 1180kWh/month with a 5970 and 5870 mining, and I'm only in a two-bedroom apartment (electric stove, electric heat/ac).

That said, I pay $0.093/kWh flat rate in Rolla, MO.  Not too bad.

I posted on another one of these threads, was running ~8c per kwh then... now it's ~7c per kwh... (3 cent reduction instead of 2 cent)

last month was $245.62 for 3590kwh (i'm leaving out the $20 'customer charge' since i'd have to pay that regardless).

the tiers here, you pay less if you use more electricity.  i  found it pretty odd when ppl started mentioning how they pay more if they use over a certain amt.   delivering a large quantity of something to 5 ppl beats delivering a small quantity to 20.

How much do you pay for power and where do you live?  I'll start:

$0.1102 per KWH in Tallahassee, FL USA

FFS I can't believe what some people are paying! And I thought mine was bad...

In WI, I'm considered R3 (even without mining) which is the highest, there is no R4)

Subsidized Residential is like .027/KWH
(Income restrictions)

Residential 1 is about .05/KWH
(Apartment/Condo)

Residential 2 is tiered .02-.12/KWH
(Small house/large Appt or Condo)

Residential 3 is tiered .04-.14/KWH
(Large house)

In my case it's 12hrs peak and 12hrs off-peak. I don't remember exactly but I think I chose 6AM-6PM peak hours. We're able to choose 6-6, 7-7, 8-8, or 9-9...

It's worked out very nice in winter! With all the 6970s and 5970s I've been running I could literally TURN OFF my heat in the house if it was above 25F outside (in a 4,000 sq ft home) and stay above 70F!! Those things really kick out the heat!

The entire operation is moving to the data center I work at though once our ASICs arrive. We need the added security for our new ASIC Mining Contracts but we'll be running on wind/solar there. Commercial 4 is actually less if we need to failover to the grid for power!? WTF...

My parents come from a 3rd world country and very on I learned to live very frugally.  I got my first smartphone just 3 months ago (no text or data before that) and before that I was paying $80/month on Verizon of all things. My wife and I put less than a combined 17k on our 2 cars and we are professionals with doctorates and incorporated with businesses.  My parents house and my own house have never had any form of cable TV - don't feel like paying $100/mo when I don't have time to even take a piss without holding a baby lol.

If I made money hand over fist like people think all physicians do then yes I might consider burning electricity like mad.  Sadly that is not the case and I try to live as cheaply as possible sans the occasional splurge on a $3K DSLR or something like that.

Also keep in mind that when RMU's supply runs low they fire up diesel generators to make up the shortfall.  How's that for being green :).
