Title: Who wishes they had bought bitcoin when it was $540 or so?
Post by: Mega Thrusters Are Go on June 07, 2014, 02:18:39 AM
The recent price just has me kicking myself for not buying in. Add in the fact you can now trade bitcoins on your iPhone and it's just hurts.

Also, who think it's weird that bitcoins top out at $600-650 or thereabouts. I think a lot of people got burned buying at $600-1000 during that big boom, and are cashing out as soon as they break even.

Thoughts?

It's not really staying even at $650, the price has only been here for a few days, compared to the $440s for almost a month.

I actually wish I bought Bitcoin when it was at $1, or less. ;)

We all wish we had bought in back then. Stupidly I listened to the goons at Something Awful, who have pooh-pooh'd the idea from the very beginning, even as the price has gone into the stratosphere.

Similar sentiment here any price under $1000 is still a reasonable price to me as in pre next bull market
That said I got some at the price you mentioned but then it went to 450 to 430 and made me go U_U
Plus the time it takes for money to move from bank to exchange to Bitcoin takes a while but when its in Bitcoin its done
So it is all relative to me

Infact I sold at $530, I thought it was a good price and it would start to go down, I did made profit but if I had kept it for a little longer I would have made a bit more.

When it hit $360 for that brief moment a month or so ago, I went into a panic. I actually got scared that it would tank down to $200 or less. So at first I got scared, (didn't sell of course), and then I thought "eh, I'll wait until it hits 2 and then buy."

Now I'm kicking myself I didn't buy at $360. Really kicking myself.

I got burned a bit. Bought too much during that bubble, but I bought more at lower prices and I'm certainly not cashing out at break even.  I even don't regret buying during that spike because there was no way for me to know it would crash and I didn't want to miss getting in.

Anyway who cares about $540 vs $650, that's only a 20% difference.  Just get in if you're not in.

If you're here for the long haul then there really isn't anything wrong with buying now and waiting for the price to eventually rise (as Bitcoin gains traction and the necessary supporting infrastructure is created and refined). Of course, if you're expecting another bubble and it to burst you could try getting in at the bottom of the bubble, but for all you know that bottom could still be higher than where we are now (same with the $150 to $1000 bubble - we never saw it reach $150 again).

If you look at the charts the bottom trend line is more exciting than the peaks. We have found a higher floor in each bear market. Usually a 10% or better increase.

That actually happened to me by accident. I had a limit order on Bitstamp at 520 or so, and completely forgot about it. One day I log into Stamp, and I see +10 BTC. One of the best days ever.

There was an even better chance. Two months ago, some 5K Bitcoins were suddenly dumped in to the BTC-E exchange. The price dropped from $380 to $164, although for only a few seconds. It climbed back to ~$350 in 5 minutes. Those who had placed buy orders at $180 and $200 hit the jackpot.  ;D

I wasn't that lucky though.  >:(

It's all guesswork really, so there's not much point in having regrets for not doing something when it could all turn on its head tomorrow and you could find yourself better off for having not done it.  I recently decided to diversify my investments and buy shares in a company instead of putting more into crypto, but so far Bitcoin is outperforming the shares.  I could regret that choice now, but then it could all change and the shares could skyrocket and Bitcoin could tank.  No one knows what's going to happen, there are bound to be winners and losers either way and hindsight is always 20/20.

Just buy every month a little amount without looking at the price, hold them and never sell for 5 years, then enjoy your richness.

Wise words. It may not even take five years, massive adoption could happen very suddenly, possibly as soon as 2-3 years.

Just buy small amounts every month, as DolanDuck said. That's what I'm doing anyway.

I have an itch to spend some BTC, but I'll be paying a couple hundred more per coin than my average buy.

Yeah, should've bought more.

Yeah me too but buying at that time , there was a sentiment of like wasting your money literally, like if you were buying a videogame currency, so i think only the people who already had alot of money were able to purchase btcs in bulk

When bitcoin reaches $5,000+ is it really going to matter if you bought in at $540 or $640?

People say this a lot, whilst I appreciate the real issue is that you just need to make sure you buy in, the difference between investing 1k at 540 or 640 if it goes to 5k is

$7812 vs $9259

So it kind of matters a bit. Just not as much as it matters if you bought nothing!

having said that... never wait for the bottom, when you can buy today :)

I was introduced to Bitcoin when it was trading at $11 back in 2011.  I wasn't ready to accept it at the time, and if I did buy I probably would've sold at all the next peak when it hit $18 or $30.

Only when I became educated on fractional reserve banking, FIAT, and how the central banking system has influenced past history, then I was able to accept that his a long term investment vehicle.

I also realized that trying to find the bottom is silly in the grand scheme of things.

Yup, we eventually did have our correction. But only a 23% Fib ratio correction. That isn't very much. I was sitting babysitting my position when it hit $620 the otherday as well, but that wasn't a good enough correction for me, so $660 it was and that will be me out of trying to trade Bitcoins for the next little while since my recent attempts have served as nothing but a means of profit minimisation.

Prices could go easily go higher than $700 in 1-2 weeks.

I said $700s....meaning $700 to $799.

I think using traditional technical analysis works even less on bitcoin market because the market is shallow and also there are blocks being mined all the time.   I love trading and technical analysis but I don't think this is the market for that.

I think the best strategy is just load up as much as we can and hold it. The days of sub-$1000 prices are numbered.

Plus, all the wannabe traders will be trigger-happy around the ATH, so increased volatility. No doubt persons-unknown will throw in a well-timed bit of FUD, so that should shake out the weak.

In the meantime, some of us just stick to the fundamentals.

Yes, they will. But I have not discarded the possibility that if we clear the resistance in the $700s, that we could top out this rally with another test of the $1000 level. Wouldn't surprise me at all, really.

It is impractical to wish you bought bitcoin at whatever price. If you feel so strongly about bitcoin, which I do, buying in now at current prices is not expensive at all. Even if bitcoin dips again, you know it has strong support about $400-$500, so you won't loose much anyway.

I know I'm jumping the gun a bit, but that's what worries me when people say the next bull run will peak at $4-6k. Though I'd love to cash out & buy back cheaper, it might not make a correction, but just continue upwards. Wasn't there an instance in the past where 2 bubbles came quite close together with very little correction in between? Think I read something like that, though it was long before my involvement in BTC.

if we could predict what price will do in any market we would already be rich traders, we wouldn't even need bitcoin to make lots of millions.

isn't that obvious? if you could predict the future with anything, you can make a lot of money off it.

If bitcoin dropped to $400 from here, that's almost a 40% loss. I don't how much you have invested, but being 40% down on an investment is exactly what I would consider "much"....

Yes it should be obvious.  But you still get people making a lot of predictions and saying stuff like if I only knew if this was the top of the market etc

Predicting the increasing value of bitcoins is quite easy if you consider a 1 year range, through holding long term anyone can do alot money.

I did buy a tiny bit at 540.
I regreted it because it went down afterwards.
But I'm happy I didn't sell, because I would have missed the bottom most certainly.

So, out of curiosity, when will you sell? You're sitting on some nice gains right now. You holding out for $1000? $10k? $1 million? Just curious what some of the hodlers are eyeing for a sell price. :P

I'm always going to be selling here and buying there. Never 100% out of course. But I can't resist locking in some gains. Personally, I think we will see 5 figures, but everything is still so speculative at this point.

I'm holding for years. 5 years min but maybe 10 or 20. If there's a huge increase then spend some.   but i dont see the point of selling for fiat. Maybe sell a small percentage after 5 years.

I also realized that trying to find the bottom is silly in the grand scheme of things.

it's only silly if you aren't good at it. i'd love to be able to reliably time the bottom (even remotely) -- what better way to increase your coin stash? other than making 100x or something on some scamcoin....

Trading, by its very nature, is difficult.   Why?

Because you're trying to take money away from very smart people.

i remember when btc was going for $5ish in 2011.. i didn't get into btc until early 2013 though. i thought it was a nice idea at first, but i guess i was too lazy to jump in.

i wanted to make a bet on obama vs. romney in 2012 but didn't think of bitcoin to do it with.. man, a $500 bet would have netted me something like $50k+ today.

I actually wish I bought Bitcoin when it was at $1, or less. ;)

Meanwhile, those of us that bought at under $1 are wishing we hadn't sold at $5, $10, $35, $65...

Even worse, those of us mining during the hot 2011 summer to earn those $1 coins who sold for a measly $5.... ***raises hand ashamedly***

When bitcoin reaches $5,000+ is it really going to matter if you bought in at $540 or $640?
Yes, because that $100 difference will be magnified into a $1,000 difference.

When the price is low and going down it should be easy to buy because the price is low but buyers are concentrated on the fact that they could buy cheaper

Thoughts?

For those early adopters who bought their bitcoins in 2010, it probably doesn't matter to them now whether they bought in at $0.54 or $0.74. If Bitcoin truly takes off like many of those here believe then the fact that I bought my first bitcoin or two at $540 or $740 will be irrelevant when the price for a single bitcoin reaches $50,000-$1 million.

Maybe, but it was intended as a jab at those who sold around 540 while those who bought at 540 were laughing. This is a fail for the ones that were laughing at the time. Even with a name like the sock puppet OP, it seemed like it would work, but it still failed. The ones that sold are having the last laugh and it doesn't matter if the price goes to $10,000,000 tomorrow. The thread is still a failed attempt at mockery.

it's not up to you, you think no one would sell at $4xx or $5xx, however the fact is market price is now $480 and still have many dumps

many thought price will never be lower than $1000 again when we were at the $1250 bubble, so what now?

you have to admit the fact bitcoin is over price and people are dumping them with or without you

Even if it were to go lower i dont see much room to sell and rebuy its too tight and risky...what do you suggest sell the whole stash now? fk that.  Id prefer to just work hard on other projects and buy even more if it went down.

The problem is it can shoot up extremely quick at any point you must know this ?

again, i am just telling the truth, you saw the topic title and i am not lying

Since you posted up charts of why you think the price was going lower that didnt match the market history i cant trust your opinion.

I dont think many on the forum at this point would sell long term holdings at this price now as a side note.

it's not up to you, you think no one would sell at $4xx or $5xx, however the fact is market price is now $480 and still have many dumps

many thought price will never be lower than $1000 again when we were at the $1250 bubble, so what now?

you have to admit the fact bitcoin is over price and people are dumping them with or without you

yep, bitcoin is not dropping since few weeks ago we were still at $680 or $620?

Even if it were to go lower i dont see much room to sell and rebuy its too tight and risky...what do you suggest sell the whole stash now? fk that.  Id prefer to just work hard on other projects and buy even more if it went down.

The problem is it can shoot up extremely quick at any point you must know this ?

you could buy back after the final capitulation (which could test $1 again), may be bitcoin could rise up again after that but who knows
let's sell first

The recent price just has me kicking myself for not buying in. Add in the fact you can now trade bitcoins on your iPhone and it's just hurts.

Also, who think it's weird that bitcoins top out at $600-650 or thereabouts. I think a lot of people got burned buying at $600-1000 during that big boom, and are cashing out as soon as they break even.

Thoughts?

Nah, buying today seems to be a better idea  ;) ;) ;) But honestly, no one knew that we would be going down again after that rise and success of late May and June! Let's hope that we get a trend-reversal soon!

Whats great about the internet is you end up in a conversation with alsorts, there isnt a strong chance of a buy back spot low enough which makes it worth selling imo.

I know the funny thing is that our perspectives change with the passage of time, and in January and February, I kept thinking that BTC prices sure were low (while they were hovering in the mid-$600s territory).  And, even in May and June, I began to believe that BTC prices were NOT going to return into the $500s and BTC prices were on a never-to-return upward trajectory.... which NOW we see has NOT panned out.

in a trading market, there is often a rally to follow..and that's just what happened now.

Time to load up!

Don't be ridiculous MailmansDOGE.  You are changing the theme of this thread, which is discussing attempts to buy at the bottom, and we are NOT here talking about regrets about buying at the top....

Further, even though BTC prices have been in a 10 month decline, there is NO real indication that these BTC prices are going to continue to decline..... in a long term sense and to stay declined...  On the other hand, it seems much more likely that prices are going to begin to go in an upwardly direction at some point..

Each of us makes his/her its calculations in order to decide how or if to invest or if to divest.

But wait! Was what I said actually irrelevant? Because as you said
and we are NOT here talking about regrets about buying at the top....

Let's now have a look to the original post to verify what you said, shall we?

I think a lot of people got burned buying at $600-1000 during that big boom, and are cashing out as soon as they break even.

Try using your reading skills before defining what a discussion shall be like.

BTC prices are gonna stop dropping sooner or later.  Surely it is good to have a fairly diversified portfolio.  Currently, I sleep better in BTC (with my BTC allocated investment funds) than I would by keeping my BTC allocated funds in Fiat, but maybe that is just me?  We will see how the holding and buying plans play out in the coming weeks and thereafter.  I am fairly certain that there is going to be quite a bit of divergence in strategies, so I would NOT necessarily suggest that my strategy is going to be comfortable for other people.

I added my point of view in this thread, and it sounds as if you have been bothered by that.  That's your dealio....  Surely, you have a right to your opinion and to express it, and if this whole thread has been a jest, then possibly I have misread the tone of the thread.. but I doubt that the whole thread is some trivial matter as you seem to be characterizing it in such a way..   Further, I doubt that it even really matters very much regarding the changing natures of threads of discussion within a thread because as you likely realize threads have a tendency to evolve to some extent over time and with various lines of discussion.

I doubt my actions, here, rise to the level of white knighting.... but whatever, you have a right to come to such misplaced conclusions if that is your inclinations.  Here, I just perceived myself to have been responding to a topic that of course has been evolving with the changes in the BTC market dynamics.

Forget what I said. JayJuanGee is probably just trying to inflate his post count. 3500+ posts in 7 monts. 177 post pages of useless garbage such the above.

Yes, forget about what Antonioserrano72 had to say in his last two posts because what he said was baseless, and his second post (above) further establishes that he is merely striving to engage in a form of ad hominem attack by speculating with various vague, ambiguous and generalized accusations based on nothing more than evidence regarding the total quantity of my posts...

Hopefully, for his own well-being, Antonioserrano72 does NOT make other life decisions and take other life actions based on such scanty evidence and baseless speculations?   ::)

Accusing people in such a manner for just posting in a forum topic only makes what you say laughable. You jump in arguments with everyone over things that aren't of any significant importance. Let me act like you and go as fas as to say that if you behave like that in real life you should be in a constant fight with people in your environment.

If that is a valid observation about a person being confrontational, such as me, then fair conclusion that such person may have confrontations in real life, too. That may or may NOT cause problems, depending on profession and role etc..

At the same time, interactions in real life will frequently have some tone components that are more difficult to replicate in a written form over the internet.  In other words, it may be easier to maintain a softer tone with in-person interactions.  Also, in real life a person may be able to avoid some confrontational interactions by refusing to deal with persons in which s/he confronts or avoiding those persons or keeping them out of his/her space.

It seems like we are deviating somewhat from the topic of the thread, though... but I will in part concede your point that some traits of a person may play out in various ways in the real world.

I wish I bought Bitcoin when it was single figure prices. mayve even double... but thats that, triple figures = you missed the boat and you will never make enough gains to retire, which is what we all want (if you are being honest)
