they should really give a discount. No credit card processing or chargebacks. They should pass some savings onto the consumer. Otherwise we may as well use reward credit cards for cashback......

it does not matter. you don't need to encourage people to use better money - they are better anyway. the fact that you don't publish your bank details on internet should be a reason enough to use bitcoin.

TDM!

Right. But ebay can use paypal as an escrow for bitcoin payments and take a small bitcoin fee. Think of what bitmit used to be: both a marketplace and a fund escrow for the transactions.

yip good to see the adoption increase but this should drive the price lower as more Bitcoins hit the exchanges from the sale on newegg because they wont be hodling any just now i don't think. but in the long run it means more Bitcoin getting spead out to more people and maybe in time newegg can convince some of there suppliers to accept Bitcoin for payment then they can hodl on to some for that. overall good news for sure.

i think all this about bitpay/coinbase selling on exchanges is a load of crap. why would they. they would get more if they just take a couple days income of btc and bulk sell to private buyers at a premium. they would only be hurting their own business plan if they were to sell all the coins on exchanges. imo its ridiculous to think they do sell on exchanges. perhaps early on they did, but not anymore  wouldnt say.

the whole purpose of bitcoin is to become a global currency; to be used, spent and traded, if there is something that is hard to understand about this concept, perhaps it's time for some people to rethink why they are here?  ::)

yes used spent and traded. im not a retard thank you. my point is. how does bitpay/coinbase help by selling on exchanges? in terms of liquidity yes it would help somewhat. but it wouldnt help their business plan which is dependent on btc being valuable, which if they just sold every bitcoin they get on exchanges, they would be dropping the value of the coin and therefore the value of peoples holdings and in turn lower the amount people spend in shops that accept btc. how does that help their business? when over stock did its first million dollars in trade in a very short period, did the price tank? it would have if all the coins spent at overstock hit exchanged as they were spent.

big buyers want bulk, coinbase/bitpay have bulk but dont want to crash the market, done deal. if there is something hard to understand about that, you should learn a little about supply and demand.

wow, they are really excited about bitcoin.

Looking at alexa, apperantly the site is mostly used by american and interestingly, women. It seems to have MUCH more traffic in December as well. Rocketing from rank 500~600 during the year to rank ~200 during Christmas 2012 and 2013.

Most people tend to visit from school as well, so that means they are likely spreading the word about bitcoin at their schools as well, which would be great advertising as well.

During the year they have about 40M monthly visitors and during December about 60M

This is pretty nice.

more than twice as big as overstock, annual revenue of about $3 billion.

Mostly serves american market, i don't think they allow bitcoin transactions outside of USA yet. They ship to the UK.

To all the permabears with their 'more sell pressure' FUD, you know nothing john snows.

for newegg to sell bitcoins, someone has to buy and spend them first, and it's likely they will buy them back as well.

More volume and more utility drives the price UP not DOWN. Retards.

Really positive news again, im from The Netherlands and I know the website Newegg.
Even tho they don't even sell here, so that is another good webshop where you can spend your Bitcoins.

I know some people will be very happy with this, I think however they should implement some kind of deal if you buy with Bitcoins.
Like get a discount or a free product if you spend a minimum amount or something.

Agree, merchant adoption doesn't seem to affect the price so much anymore, I think it was due to investors waiting for the auction due to uncertainty of how it would affect the price. I, myself waited but managed to get in when price was still sub 600  ;)

People who can't understand why the price won't rise with new merchant adoptions don't really understand bitcoin.
Bitcoin is not a proper currency, because it lacks the mechanism for price stability, and it also struggles with being a platform for wealth transfer.

Bitcoin is mainly an innovative gambling platform - a legal game of pump'n'dump.
Meaning, it doesn't matter how much bitcoin will be used for practical purposes. The only thing that matters is the coming and going of new gamblers.
Bitcoin is too impractical to be valued by it's practical application. It's value is based on speculation and therefor speculators. And the wealthiest speculators don't believe in bitcoins practical application, they see that promises of easy wealth is the main attraction of bitcoin.

Dear People of Latin America,

The *ENTIRE* world refers to people from the United States as "Americans" and to the country as "America".

Your inferiority complex is very transparent and annoying.

This is an international forum. The world is here...and the WORLD calls us Americans. YOU are not Americans, we are.

How exactly are Latin Americans not Americans? Setting aside the conversation about whether something that is ought to be, your superiority complex is showing. And who is "us", anyway? The people who collectively live on land bought or stolen by the US government? Okay, great. Go wave a flag or something, because nobody gives a shit.

Sometimes, something good is build on sand and illusion. What you said here is true, but that doesn't mean bitcoin isn't good for a payment gateway.

you can configurate in your bitpay merchant acc, if you convert 100% to usd or if you keep some percent in btc. i guess most keep some btc.
imo bitpay is the way to go for merchants atm, great service for the current phase.

second step would be wholesale merchants to accept btc with bitpay. then the retail industry can keep higher percentages in btc to buy new stuff directly with btc. after that the next step is manufacturers to accept btc so the wholesale merchants can keep higher percentages in btc. to close the circle resources and employees have to be paid in btc. it's a long way to go but it has started.
imo thats the progress we need and the picture i have in mind, when brainstorming about how btc has to develop over the next decade.

Bitcoin is mainly an innovative gambling platform - a legal game of pump'n'dump.
Meaning, it doesn't matter how much bitcoin will be used for practical purposes. The only thing that matters is the coming and going of new gamblers.

No.  Just use the word 'tulips', and try to marginalize it like that, instead.

Bitcoin is too impractical to be valued by it's practical application. It's value is based on speculation and therefor speculators. And the wealthiest speculators don't believe in bitcoins practical application, they see that promises of easy wealth is the main attraction of bitcoin.

Really?

If what you're saying is true, then why exactly did Tim Draper just drop 18+ million on an asset that he plans to use in development of for said asset building infrastructure through liquidity?

Bitcoin ... struggles with being a platform for wealth transfer.

Too bad transferring bitcoins is so hard. I was going to transfer 100 BTC of my wealth to you. No matter, I'll visit NewEgg instead.

Especially since a company like NewEgg is probably buying a ton of stuff from China.  If they could pay in bitcoins, they could save all those fees.

I remember seeing some online news a couple of months ago, stating that Newegg we're going to trial the UK as a potential market. The news had nothing to do with Bitcoin, but I looked forward to having a new competitor to Scan and ebuyer over here.

It seems that you can get prices in UK sterling but the site looks like it's booking through the US portal, with (rather expensive) UK delivery appended as an option to your order. The mobile site, in particular, is still very US centric.

Is this the best they could do?

No.  Just use the word 'tulips', and try to marginalize it like that, instead.

'Tulips' and bitcoin do have their similarities. The major one being the artificial scarcity. And I'm not only talking about the millions of bitcoins that are just sitting there, owned by anonymous holders. I'm talking about the technology and the idea, that bitcoin is based on, and how these things are important. And there is no artificial scarcity with the idea and the technology. Bitcoin and it's unit, is just a fragile brand, without much practical application. It's scarcity is a temporal bubble, caused by the introduction of new financial technologies.

Considering that I respect Tim Draper as an investor, I would guess that he either knowingly purchased 18+ million worth of casino chips, or he somehow needs those coins for specific publicity reasons. If I had to guess again, then I would say, that he probably wants to open his own payment service, what gets it's initial publicity because of it's ties with bitcoin. The beauty of building support services around BTC, is that your business won't depend on the success of BTC. You can quickly adopt new and better cryptocurrencies and continue business as usual when bitcoin becomes obsolete.
Making money with the crypto scene like that, isn't as easy as just opening an account at bitstamp and buying coins, but you sure have more control over your chances of success.

Debate on issues. Leave personal attack out.

I think that one should be ready for personal attacks, if one visits an religious forum and challenges it's dogmas.
I agree that debating the issues is the rational thing to do, but rationality isn't held in high regard among the religious. Devotion to 'The One Truth' is the measure that is used when judging people.

People think, that religion has to include a narrative about omnipotent deities who created the world. Religion has diversified a lot in the modern age..

LOL at this whole tired discussion of Bitcoin being a religion. First of all, the crypto landscape would not exist today if it weren't for fanatics and true loyal believers. Its the greatest power at the core of bitcoin and the entire industry - people that believed when there was little obvious reason to.

I can't take credit for that in any way. Personally, I have never advised a single soul that I know to invest in bitcoin or altcoins, although I have dramatically myself.  I have never preached the virtues of bitcoin - the farthest I have gone is outlining my interest in it when asked repeatedly. As I have had financial success in a variety of businesses, people want to know what I am doing now/next. That is the only time I talk about it.

Not very "religious" myself.

But THANK GOD for the fanatics that paved the way for enough people to stop and look at the technology and see what promise it might really hold for the future of the planet.

At any rate, the die have been cast by now, so all the pseudo-intelligent blabbering to sound like healthy debate that "atheists" like Mervin spout all over the forum like so many loaves of day old bread, - its all just a waste of time.

That must be the reason then, why I see A LOT of mathematics in this thread and in the entire forum.
I would even go as far, as telling that your religion is about particle physics, because *insert something here* is made of particles.

That must be the reason why the majority sounds very scientific here, and the main goal for everyone here is to solve mathematical problems.
This thread has thought me a lot.

Good. At least you have a sense of humor (unless that was just more sarcasm), which I have never detected from any of your history of posts that I scanned.

However you are a socialist. And socialists are not the funniest people in the world. Partly because they suffer greatly over the injustice and greed that they believe they see in the world, and partly because humor is born from pain and/or desire. Socialist try to avoid both of these at the core of their philosophy.

So, just getting you talking about humor - I'd say this is a glorious start!

Subtle is an interesting word. I guess quarks and sub-atomic particles are subtle.  ;)

You hate speculation. You see it as pure greed. You hate the idea of new wealth taking over old wealth. You hate the idea of people getting wealthy without "working hard" or "providing value" to society. You think that people should develop skills to acquire wealth through the creation of traditional businesses. The list goes on...but, hell, I'm telling you what you already know.

Funny, huh?

Sure, its socialism. Socialist don't believe in people not creating businesses - maybe you are thinking of communists, where the state owns everything. Socialism wants a society where wealth is more equally distributed than capitalism, where money flows generously from the top down and where people look out for each other instead of themselves.  This is very much in line with points you argue, without coming out and defining it specifically.

And all this time I thought that socialism is about social ownership.
Another lesson learned..

Ha. You are like that guy who comes to America from Germany. He's learned english in a german classroom and knows it well. Except the english language is constantly evolving and so when he speaks it is seems as though it is stiff and outdated. You might have read in a textbook about social ownership, but socialism in today's world is much more diverse than that one issue.

PS My parents are socialists. They don't really subscribe to a lot of social ownership though. You remind me of them.

I'm not the educated expert here, but maybe socialism is a clearly defined ideology with a specific stance on economics. And maybe socialism and social democracy are two different ideologies? :o

See, in your mind "socialism" is a clearly defined ideology. But its not. There are different degrees. And we can talk about social democracy and other varients, but it just gets tedious. My point still stands about why you lack a less subtle sense of humor.  ;D

Thank you for that lesson that socialism isn't a clearly defined ideology and how there are different degrees.

Don't be so rigid. Its an encumbrance.

(if you're <26 years old, then you are excused and will probably outgrow this).

The one truth of mathematics?
There are no "issues". There are facts and non-facts.

Hmm, interesting... this sub-forum is about mathematics then. I see.

cryptography is mathematics, so bitcoin is about mathematics, and so our religion is mathematics.

P.S. vehemently believing that 2+2 equals 4 since the age of 3.

No, you got it wrong. Just like bitcoin's proof of work, it is hard to come up with a solution but infinitely easier to verify that it is correct. You don't have to be a scientist to see the beauty of bitcoin or use it's benefits. We don't solve mathematical problems - computers do, that is their main purpose. We just serve them by generating power and cleaning ventilation slots; for this they give us rewards.
