Title: What's Your Favorite Altcoin?
Post by: Bitcoin-hotep on July 02, 2014, 10:11:40 PM
I have not really been paying attention for the past few months.
Which altcoins are doing what right now?

DOGE is probably the last new coin I heard of if I remember correctly. It was at least the last one that stuck in my mind.

And just a random thing I would like to share. I have NEVER mined a coin in my LIFE because I have no idea how to do anything like that, I am more of a history and etymology and anthropology and chemistry person, not at all a computer person. I bought ONE BTC back when they were $30. But I have gotten at least 10 Bitcoins thanks to Devcoin, which (on devtome) pays people to write about whatever they want.

If there are any other coins like that, I think they would get SOOOOOOO much attention to cryptocurrencies. If there was a coin I could get for writing and another coin I could get for posting videos and another coin I could get for posting on a forum and another coin I could get for recruiting people to a mining pool, etc etc etc then eventually EVERYONE would be in to Crypto currencies, instead ofjust people that can figure out computers.

Everyone needs to start thinking HOW COULD I GET MY MOM TO USE MY NEW COIN WITHOUT ME HELPING HER

i have never mined a coin either and have found the whole concept interesting.

lol in regards to your mom, i think you are right. Until someone big like google or amazon, etc jumps on making one of the coins as a alternative payment system i am afraid it don't look like it is going to become easily accessible to the general public. I would assume the big companies will be able to make this more user friendly.

I have tried, and even had people explain me through the whole process and I can never get my computer to do it just right, or I am somehow just computer incompetent and am doing something wrong even when I get it explained to me via the phone.

Yeah, I am hoping that Google or somebody makes a coin soon. I honestly have no idea why they have not done it yet, it blows my mind that the Internet Search company that probably has people using their search engine more than ANYTHING ELSE to learn about Bitcoin, and they themselves (who are paid developers) have not decided to do anything yet.

Everyone needs to start thinking HOW COULD I GET MY MOM TO USE MY NEW COIN WITHOUT ME HELPING HER

Abstraction.

If you interface with a coin through a recognisable medium, it's easy to use.

for example: think of a paypal/skrill UI web based program which hooks in to any wallet you specify, or a one provided by the website owner.
not limited to this, but it's a start.

I think eventually people will realize that people on "the outside" don't trust people that they have never seen the face of, and that that is like 25% of the problem with Bitcoin. Many people don't even KNOW of anyone that has been on TV or anything because of Bitcoin. If it were not for the Joe Rogan Podcast I would have personally never heard of David Seaman or Andre Antanopolis, I would have only heard of Gavin Anderson and Satoshi Nakamoto and that is from reading stuff HERE.

SO.
The solution to this will be wallets at ALREADY trusted sites. Ex: Imagine Bitcointalk.org profiles came WITH wallets. Do you think more people would trust that over a website that they can't communicate with directly? If there were wallets associated with our accounts, we could all complain when they messed up and stuff, and people like to be able to talk to the people holding their stuff. That is why MCXNow was so successful even though everyone here always hated on it.

And once people start showing their faces more and Bitcoiners start getting put to known public faces, it will start to move a lot faster. Like if Joe Rogan himself announced that HE owned Bitcoins and supported Bitcoins and told people to make their own coins in a short video (or if there was a 'show you face' thread here) people would start to feel like they should get involved and wonder why they haven't.

Yes, that is perfect.
If someone were to implement that, eventually sites like Amazon would realize that THAT is what they should be doing. People should be able to trade bitcoins for Amazon coins, or money for Amazon coins, then spend those coins on Amazon. It could eventually completely replace gift cards for ALL companies, they just have to make their own Micro currencies based on coins.

Ignore dogecoin, they have screwed it up with setting the coin supply to unlimited. Its already leaded toward its doomsday.
Currently i belive in DRK and monreo, also CannabisCoin is trying. And favourite one i'd like to skyrocket as it deserves it? DigiByte of course.

There is a time and a place for infinite coins, they will be the payment system for mining Bitcoin once there are no more Bitcoins to mine. You will merge mine things like Doge coin and Devcoin WITH the Bitcoin, and that is how you will get paid when there aren't any bitcoins left to pay you in.

And then if we ever become a space faring species, then we will need infinite coins to help us calculate trade throughout the galaxy and eventually the universe. Some planets/space stations will value coins differently. Like on one planet/station Doge coin will be popular, while on another Bitcoin will be more popular. Like USD and Pesos or Euros.

I think it is fair to say that the posts above already paint a picture of some Altcoins having reasonably established themselves in this very young field. Personally, my thoughts go to Devcoin with its unique approach and goals. Dogecoin for the micro payments (with Mooncoin underrated) and Darkcoin as example of anonymity efforts.

However, I expect a breakthrough (which seems inevitable regardless of the unknown time scale) to come from practical trading solutions. Imagine what happens if XCP / Reggie's Ultracoin become a success?

Massive disruption and an absolute hype in crypto currency land.

I do understand the need to make everything super simple and get ATMs in every gas station so people can buy the coins. But the main focus should be on making altcoins that are tailored to NEW users who don't mine. That is how it becomes money for everyone.

For me its Feathercoin Its not new and it's got a great established friendly community and those guys are doing some amazing work right now. Replacing the scrypt algorithm with an updated version they have developed themselves called neoscrypt.
They have a Feathercoin ATM and also a custom Point of Sale device.
Thats not all as the list is pretty long but go check them out I'm expecting big things over the next few months. :)

Do they have like 25-50 people posting on their thread every day? And a team of people that replies all the time?
That would give them like a B+ rating.

If they have their own exchange, THEN they can have an A. A+ if they have a forum or chat box on that exchange.

yawn... you forgot to list some things that they really do:

http://vimeo.com/m/93300399

As for your claim: How do you premine a coin that is not mineable?

And you should check current distribution. Today, 0,4% of Nxt wallets own 74% of all coins. Not so good? Then check out Bitcoins distribution, where 0.31% btc accounts own 94,73% of all btc.

DVC, Litecoin, both resonate well with me.

DVC is really ailing at the moment, and I wonder if the rise of cloud mining is responsible. Those extra DVC that people get just getting dumped.

The worst from the list given is Doge, just because it is a silly coin, and was not funny ... ever.

After that, the WDC "community" became like a cult, which was creepy .... but what about the rumours of WDC being sold off on the cheap from the ex official facebook? (later claim was that it was hacked).

Last, FTC has the worst name possible, so I can't take it seriously.

*Edit .. Peercoin, although I don't buy it, was a pretty good innovation.

Plus, XRP was clever, but the development team handled promotions very badly.

Does anyone know like different websites that show what ASIC coins are being mined most and SHA being mined most and Scrypt being mined most, etc.

Devcoin has many problems.

1. Tons of trolls came after someone that used Devcoin and ended up basically working there and they are horrible people.

2. People get the coins FREE, then they all hold on for dear life. Coins MUST have fluid motion, or it will die. The people that have been writing for coins for 2+ years need to just give a good chunk of them up so that the coin can breathe.

3. The people there only seem to like getting things done when it is in spite of someone.

Other than those things, it's a great project.

I don't see why they should give their coins up because you think it might serve a greater good.

I'm sure there is fluidity, it is mined everyday along with BTC.

I never said they "had to" I just said that it would fix the coin. And I think they should sell them, not give them away free or anything.

And mining has NOTHING to do with fluidity. If no one is spending or selling the coins, they are not moving. Even a drop in price is a better form of progress than stagnation.

How do you spend them where Bitcoins can be spent? How does that work? That does sound like something that will be adopted across the board eventually.

i have never mined a coin either and have found the whole concept interesting.

lol in regards to your mom, i think you are right.

I honestly have no idea why they have not done it yet, it blows my mind that the Internet Search company that probably has people using their search engine more than ANYTHING ELSE to learn about Bitcoin, and they themselves (who are paid developers) have not decided to do anything yet.

iof you have access to CBT nuggets there is a good explanation of how the whole system works. i am guessing there are other youtube videos that show how the whole process works, but again i dont think it is easily accessible for the average person. Because of this the idea of E-currency will struggle to take off the ground. check out youtube i am sure you will find good simple videos.

Why don't you all just "beat the scammers" instead of worrying about a scam. If everyone tries to make ALL the coins work, the scammer can cash out, then everyone can use those coins to build a continuing market.

i suppose, but you have to worry about exchanges and stuff like that closing, i mean you are dealing with real life money, its not something you will want to mess with. i think its already happened a couple of times in the past.

are you not worried if money goes missing?

also a few people have said FTC, I'm wondering why?

I think its because it has keep up development and a strong community for over a year.
It has some great plans to continue to move the coin forward such as a new hashing algo NeoScrypt (internally developed by FTC)

Its not just standing still and relying on hype in fact the community specifically does not hype. But only tries to promote actual achievements. (Feathercoin ATM, MinerX etc etc)

Bitcoin is my favorite coin although it's not an altcoin.

Out of all the altcoins, I like Nxt because it was written completely from scratch and has quite a lot of interesting and innovative features. I also like Peercoin because it was the first proof-of-stake coin.

Other coins that I like: Dogecoin, Litecoin, Qora, and the three big anon coins (Darkcoin, Bytecoin, and Monero). I might include NEM in the list too once it is fully developed.

There are actually 3 big anon coins. They are

1) Monero
2) Vertcoin
3) Darkcoin

Vertcoin is the first to use stealth addresses inside the coin itself
Monero is the first cryptonote to have a fair distribution and has Ring Signatures, which offers the highest level of anonymity(Bytecoin has a 82% premine)
Darkcoin is the first to have masternodes

First post  :P

I've only tinkered with a few coins. I still spend most of my time learning about what's out there because I have a few designs for my own coin platforms. I'm not a dev, though, so I'm just trying to absorb everything I can.

GridCoin (GRC) https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=324118.0 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=324118.0)
Great idea. Uses BOINC in conjunction with PoW mining (they call it Proof of BOINC - PoB) to support grid computing power that contributes to scientific research.

The dev community is extremely active. Unfortunately, they're building a complicated beast and I personally don't feel it's 100% just yet. Very soon...but not yet.

I had an offline conversation with the creator of PopCoin (POP) https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=444745.0 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=444745.0). If you take a look and like what you see he seems to be a very motivated young man with a vision. I haven't mined it personally.

But as I said, I'm mostly here to learn and make some connections.

There is first true anon coin, and the oldest, like Apraksin wrote, Anoncoin ANC
only 4.2m will be mined,

For me its Feathercoin Its not new and it's got a great established friendly community and those guys are doing some amazing work right now. Replacing the scrypt algorithm with an updated version they have developed themselves called neoscrypt.
They have a Feathercoin ATM and also a custom Point of Sale device.
Thats not all as the list is pretty long but go check them out I'm expecting big things over the next few months. :)

Have to go with FTC for these reasons. If you havent and are interested I would check out all the developments happening right now.
