I have found a old wallet with in 10btc I have no idea about the password

what can i do?

2 ways to do it:

1.Find the password
2.Bruteforce it.

There is no other way.

This is the reason why this is SO important to remember your password to any bitcoin wallet.
Without a password you will not get access to your coins - it is impossible. (if password was configured).

It is kinda like - you had a jar with money and you hid it in in the ground in some forest. And after a while you don't remember which forest it was and where you did put that jar..

Kind regards.

Might be an idea to think of passwords you might have used in the past, just incase it was one of those..

You might get some tips or answers in this message thread or read through them as you are not the first or the last to have this happen to you.

Here is an example, many more in that forum thread too, might find some useful advice.

Hope you someday do recover your coins.

Ian.

Yeah I'd suggest writing down all the passowrds you may have used and try every one of them.  I recently forgot my password and that worked for me.  I just wish I had 10 Bitcoin inside when I remembered the code.  ::)

Good luck.

True i agree, think of the possibilities what you might have used, like was it "ihave10btchere" or something like that and then go from there, or even roughly what it could have been, then you can try variations write it down on a paper and eliminate possibilities.

if you know how long the password was likely to be along with the character set (ie all lowercase), I could help you. If the password was ~6 chars with only lowercase letters + numbers then there are only 2 billion combinations.

Man I hope that is not the case in this situation.  I would admit it is very possible and people have tried this type of thing on this forum before if I'm not mistaken.

have you got an old copy of the wallet before encryption? If so, remove the new wallet, put the old one in, and start the client.

well, If you dont have a good idea of what the password was, then the wallet would need to be "brute forced" cracked which is currently not an option for bitcoin wallets.

but if you do, then I can offer you some help

In my opinion bruteforcing 30 chars even if you know that "forum" word was in it will take .... years :)

That will make bruteforcing quite faster - now you need only few years instead of many years :)

I am sorry my friend but recovering this 30 chars might be too hard :(

I have about 150 GPUs that can crack that password for you if you pay for the electricity to run them?
Here are my rates

12 or ^ characters = 5000 years electrical cost + 10% finders fee
11 characters = 60  years electrical cost + 10% finders fee
10 characters = 8 months electrical cost + 10% finders fee
 9 or v characters = 3 days electrical cost + 10% finders fee

If the alt coin market wasn't such sh!t3 right now I could get more!  Hmmmmm.  Maybe I'm in the wrong line of work...

Crack any strong password 9 characters or less brute force for $500. 3 days or less guaranteed!

bram_vnl, Even in the best case scenario (the password is comprised entirely of lowercase text) there are 2630 combinations. If you had the capability to run 1 billion combinations per second it would take ~89 septillion (1024) years to run every combination. Our sun will supernova long before you discover a 30 character password by way of brute forcing. Even knowing the word "forum" is in there won't help you to brute force it before our sun dies.

Sorry dude, unless you can remember your password you may as well accept defeat.

You forget the exponential growth of computational power.  So the time it will take to solve with halve every 18 months.  So he may solve it before our sun supernova's but not until after our sun becomes a reg giant and swallows the earth.

But hey those bitcoin will be worth a fortune by then right?  It will totally be worth it!!!

I think it takes most home computers a full 0.1 seconds to check just one password for correctness, so if the password has 9 characters long then it will take years to complete

This could really be the best way to long hold a coin.  Think of it as now being in a crypto "cd".  You can't touch it but you know it is safe.  So get started brute forcing that password and when it is done you will be rich.

Moore's Law is expected to slow to 3 year intervals as it is getting much harder to double the number of transistors at 18 month intervals. Even so it would require constant investment in new top of the line processors in order to keep up.

Processor speed isn't really the bottlehead anyway. You'd be lucky to be able to test 10 combinations per second on a Bitcoin daemon because you'd have to wait for the dameon to test it and return the true/false response before continuing. Even your offer of defeating a strong 9 character password within 3 days seems unlikely if the password was completely random and comprised of a mix of lowercase text, uppercase text, numbers and symbols.

If I were to comprise a random nine character password made up of entirely characters I can see on my English (UK) laptop keyboard (nothing from the character map) there would be 999 (913,517,247,483,640,899) combinations. Brute forcing even that in 3 days is a near impossibility.
