Title: The Pirate Bay - Two of it's founders are now in prison
Post by: Mikez on July 13, 2014, 08:37:21 AM
In case you haven't visited the homepage of https://thepiratebay.se two of it's founders are locked up.
Quote
Peter Sunde was arrested today in a police raid in southern Sweden. The Pirate Bay co-founder was wanted by Interpol as he had yet to serve prison time for his involvement with the site. Sunde's arrest comes exactly eight years after the police raided the Pirate Bay servers, which marked the start of the criminal prosecution against the site's founders.
Let's show them some support.

Well this was bound to happen sooner or later.  I saw something on TV a few nights back about Kim .com and how he's going to go down soon.

The motion picture and music industry is more powerful than Big oil in America.  Big oil makes money.  The media companies make equally big profits and can brainwash people and can sue you for $10k per infringement off of one copyright.

Transformers: Age of Extinction

    Release date: June 27, 2014

    Box office gross: $302,138,400
    Budget: $210,000,000

Only 1 movie making a Net profit of nearly $100 000 000 in a few days, and they still saying, they losing money on piracy. How greedy can you be?

Their royalties and copyright goes on for centuries, thanks to Walt Disney's court case findings, and they smile all the way to the bank.

It's a shame, and even a bigger shame, that we support them. {Me included} 13% of my total income goes towards them. {Movies / Rentals / Subscriptions}

Guys shouldn't be in prison, they have just provided place for crime. Criminals are guys that downloaded and uploaded, that includes me also. Everyone should be in prison by that terms, but that's just stupid enough for me to smile to them  ;D. Release them, no need for them to stay locked, you will not fix a thing with that.

Except that 210 million budget includes about $20-$30 million in tax breaks and kick-backs from the government.  This then goes to lobbyists who wine and dine the Senators/Congresspeople and get them to write new tax breaks.  It works out well for both parties.  Oh whoops, sorry one of the groups are "public servants" - sorry can't say that with a straight face.

Why not add a functionality to search torrents on the torrent software itself?

I would be fucking giddy if I ever got that much and there's plenty you can do with that amount that the average person could only dream of, it's not filesharing that's the problem, it's them, governments seriously need to throw these scumbags out of court or in jail.

This is me speaking as a soon to be independent artist as well.

They are in prison for a crime they didn't commit, this is an injustice. It's sad the legal system is on the wrong side of history.
In time let's hope the laws change, after all the whole world is copying, even the NSA, Apple and Microsoft copies your data without permission.

I think there are (or at least used to be) software like that. bear share way back when, and i think Limewire was like that before they got taken down.

The law is really outrageous. If they directly stole something, or even attempted assault, they would've gotten less time. I'm almost sure the time they're going to be locked up is downright up there, but, it's great ti be optimistic.

Indeed I have very little sympathy for producers of works who use really long copyright laws to protest their works long after their retail and commercial value is forgotten, to that extent I wish they let the pirate bay founders go.
(more for a fair return going to all than just the studios)
For saving lives and by educating people about various things using the internet and social media I nominate them for the Nobel Peace Prize XD
But I would like to see them let go ^_^

Not to mention Kazaa, eMule or DC++(and it's spawns, oDC++ and StrongDC++).

But to be honest, we are just as 'guilty' as them.

Certain companies pay the government, and government listens to money. There's nothing democratic about this decision.
The Piratebay is online, for those who are wondering. If there is censorship you can go around the blockade.

But a possible near term tech concept, "smart property", would enable micropayment through bitcoin when a freely downloaded, possibly encrypted song was played.  Going forward, this decapitates the power of the music industry.  Their grip on old intellectual property will remain legally strong.

But to enforce that they will have to destroy the unencrypted mp3s of the world, which is impossible.  As hard drives and storage increase, it's not long before you will be able to store a huge number of songs (eg, "all").  That makes irrelevant peer to peer bootleg distribution for old product.

I would say, a checkmate is coming.

Wow what a waste of time, instead of thinking of ways to innovate the movie industry with the internet they wanna put peoples in jail.  If I can pay to watch movies from my home I would.  I dont care for movie theaters anymore when I have big screen TV at home.

Well that happens when you run site on which people can post pirate work for free.
That is way of capitalism, if they do not receive money from you, you will go to prison.
Why to give some work for free when you can sell it :)
That is how all works today.

Yeah, so wait let me get this right, these fuckers ask you to pay an expensive ticket to watch some shitty cookie cutter summer movie while I can barely pay my internet bills, so if you can't pay, you are condemned to not enjoy any new music or movies whatsoever, while these bastards get filthy rich. Just lol.

The guys who created Pirate Bay are heroes, but now they are in jail because the entertainment industry is so powerful that it influences the decisions of prosecutors and lawmakers all over the world.

It really is just a reflection of the state of the world today - we are ruled by Greed, and anyone who tries to challenge the status quo in any meaningful way is crushed.

Just look at the new Bitlicense regulations, designed to take away privacy and autonomy from bitcoin users.

This is largely a symbolic gesture although very unfortunate for those two. Truth is yes, they just jailed the 2 founders of the pirate bay, but that won't stop the millions of torrenters around the globe, the economic costs of jailing and punishing torrenters would be astronomical. This is also why I don't call myself a capitalist anymore, because the state and the capital holders are actively 69ing themselves. Capital holders receive protection and authority from the state, the state receives wealth and economic influence.

What you are describing is called crony capitalism.  It's made to look like capitalism, but the inner workings are all that of the corrupt oligarchs that have ruled mankind since day 1.  True capitalism does not have the state protect bad business models - those fail under their own accord.  In this case the entertainment industry is able to bypass free markets and gain the political favor of governments by contributing greatly to their general election funds.

Install adblock to remove their advertisements and switch to open source software everywhere if it possible. The only way to take down a liberal dictocracy is stop playing their games.
