Excellent news! What this enables now are startups that need some basic IT infrastructure that are in the Bitcoin Space to directly use their crowdfunded or VC (BTC) funded bitcoins for direct purchase of Dell hardware.

Pretty good news considering Dell are known for good quality (ish) computers and I will always accept a discount when paying for Bitcoin! Great stuff. I know where the majority of Bitcoiners will be getting their new computers this year.

You can buy PC components ad stuff from Overclockers here in the UK too I believe.

I wonder when we're really gonna get the big news from Amazon or eBay. Surely it's only a matter of time.

Are they gonna keep a part of bitcoins they receive or are they going to dump them all for $$?

I assume the latter... just a retoric question.

Well they'll probably just get the fiat value from coinbase, though it's not impossible to keep some btc as that's what Overstock do. Regardless it's still great news for bitcoin whether they do or don't.

To be completely honest, Bitcoin getting accepted by more and more companies would not increase the price, if anything the price would decrease more since those companies immediately sell any bitcoins they acquire from users buying their products...The only way the price would increase is if a large amount of people decide to buy Bitcoin at relatively the same time. Other than that, it's all speculation and doesn't warrant a price increase.

Oh! Haha, I guess I must have misremembered.

Good to see both companies doing well anyway. Better than just having one dominate the large corporate scene for sure.

It actually makes me very happy to see Dell accepting Bitcoin, and it shows how easy it is for big companies to start accepting it. Now if only more and more companies could start following in it's wake...

They would be able to sell bitcoins because those bitcoins would have been previously bought by Dell's customers. So no downwards pressure.

Not if those Dell's customers were bagholders...Which I suspect, many many people are after the November Bull Run.

I dont get it. Why is btc price dropping again? . I thought this would be great news + they were offering a 10% discount if you pay with bitcoin which would in theory get people who were in the process of buying from Dell anyway buy BTC first and pay that way ??

If they didn't sell the bag on the markets, why would they use it to buy hardware?

True, but these type of news actually tend to decrease the price.

But then again, why would someone buy BTC just to buy products online that they could of bought more easily with Fiat?

Well, they wouldn't buy it unless they had a reason, which might just very well be that they want an "anonymous" transaction. (Yes I know BTC is pseudoanonymous)

There also is the 10% discount, so the discount probably outweighs the fees require to buy BTC. You can save up to $150, and I doubt BTC buying fees would be that high, so it does have it's advantages.

I'm On the same page I was expecting it to go around 650 tonight  , But I'll wait for few more hours before making any opinion about it, because its weekend and we might see a price rise on Monday morning or maybe earlier. In recent times adoptions from big companies hasn't made any huge Impact on price , whether we talk about Expedia , newegg or others, but they can't ignore it for longer. Can they its all building up?

Apple might be really slow getting to it, if they are they'll blame it on anything they can.

Although, if Apple starts accepting it, chances are Sony/Samsung/Google will have to start accepting it to compete with Apple, or lose a part of their market, and then other places will have to start accepting Bitcoin to compete, etc.

So we are seeing the slow rise of Bitcoin being accepted in LOTS of places. Makes me quite happy :)

apple likes playing and negotiating on their own terms.. which is why i think they might not accept bitcoin until or unless it's absolutely necessary - it's because they can't control it.

By the way, can someone clarify if we're able to buy stuff from Dell's subsidiaries in BTC?

How many of you still use Dell Computers?   I have them for my company, but I stopped using Dell computers a long time ago.  They were always pretty reliable, but never to aesthetically pleasing (I know that shouldn't matter all that much in a laptop selection).

In terms of Ultra Books at least, I feel like Acer and Asus (for PC) have far surpassed them, but Dell still has the big-time name recognition that will help with bringing BTC to the mainstream.

Maybe Apple will follow suit?   haha jk

yes this, it makes BTC more transactional than store of value, so possibly early adopters with a stash can cash out their BTC, but the price is pushed down.

What is the benefit to acquire BTC then buy something with it straight away...not much at the moment as it cost a % cost to acquire from fiat. There is a sfatey aspect of not Credit card...and avoiding those fees.

Store of value and large transactions are important. That said, these large players may actually choose to keep a % of BTC...I know I would!

To date though I am not sure and retail adoption has seen the price increase....

You're actually right that Dell is no longer as prevalent in the home computing scene; that's the primary detractor of this story (if there really is one). I wonder if they would transfer the usage of bitcoins over to their commercial sector (where most of their portfolio is currently located). That'd actually be quite an interesting development.

dell isn't what it used to be.. i think they recently went private right? but still, their ultrabooks are pretty nice, namely the xps 13.. i like them more than the asus/acer variety. it's slimmer than your average 13.3" laptop and has a lot of nice features, and ultimately feels nicer in my hands.

i wasn't paying a whole lot of attention at the time, but when overstock accepted bitcoin didn't it provide a minor jolt.. until the whole mt. gox debacle? other than that, i can't really think of any example. right now, it seems that acceptance isn't a big boon for bitcoin.. i still think an ETF will send it through the roof though.

Why the hell do you need it to be aesthetically pleasing? Do you sit and stare at the case all day? If it really bothers you that much, then swap out the case. I would have expected an answer along the lines of: "mainstream dell computers use bare minimum, cheap ass parts that they slap a warranty on"

Although some of their servers and rebranded PSU's are some of the most power efficient ones.

It's been a great year so far in regards to larger sized companies accepting bitcoin. Doesn't seem like the trend is showing any signs of slowing down either.

I think merchnats will keep on being added almost daily with a big one every two or three months, I just wish the price would rise to reflect this.

Price probably rises as new money enters the into the btc market as a result of more merchants accepting btc. However, price is only important if you use btc as an investment/speculation. In this case for merchant and the mass public using btc as a currency, the price is irrelevant. Stability is more important.

It seems to me like everyday more and more cash is going into bitcoin. Hopefully soon demand will outsource supply and cause a spike.

They don't have much other options, Bitcoin haven't evolved to that level yet where people won't dump it for fiat. But maybe in future they might like it acquire more and more btc and all the people will be dumping their fiat for btc.

maybe stability is more important, but most people here are only concerned about price.. and that's just the way it works. but i do agree that the price does not necessarily reflect its position.

The fact that dell accepts bitcoin will likely cause others to want to invest in bitcoin and bitcoin related businesses

Dell would have been the last company I thought would accept bitcoin. That's unexpected.

Dell? Whoa, they ARE bigger than Overstock and DISH combined. Is it really just the media hype? Maybe many companies just don't exactly know what do make of bitcoin and decide to better embrace it to avoid missing the train choo choo!

Merchants do not need to worry about price stability as coinbase and bitpay allow merchants to instantly cash out when they receive a bitcoin payment.

Not at the moment.

A quote from Dell's CIO:
Quote
We wanted to start up with the US base, and from that, we’ll see where we wanted to move next.
The big thing here is being able to be a lot more agile in terms of addressing our customers’ needs.

is it? you think the "mass public" is buying BTC to use it as a currency, as opposed to investment/speculation? i find that pretty unlikely. anyway, stability is no matter to merchants because by and large, they process through Bitpay/Coinbase.

This is not happening yet, but I would argue that it will likely happen in the future when a lot more large merchants start to accept bitcoin and more merchants start to offer discounts for buying with bitcoin

I also got the feeling the rocket is standing at the launch pad and about to take off.

When the ETF will be launched together with all the great news lately there is no doubt we will see a big rally.

I hope it will still take a little while tho so I can buy some more coins while still in the 3 digit zone ::)

that's what people have been saying for about 2 months now, and nothing has happened. i'm still holding out on hopes, but maybe it will make a run. all i know is that big merchants accepting bitcoin has not resulted in a lot of people buying bitcoin, which explains why it hasn't skyrocketed yet.

Yeah the ETF will be really interesting! Man, some investment vehicle for the people who like to throw money at things! That's exactly what bictoin needs. What is your expectations on when it is ready to hit Wall Street?

It will take some time, all this good news results in Bitcoin's image turning from "silk road drug currency" to something more legitimate. This doesn't mean that people new to Bitcoin hear that Dell is accepting bitcoins immediately start buying them.

They might read a little about it, they find out that it's a lot more complicated than you would think at the first glance, then they might buy some to test it out like everyone does, then they get hooked, tell their friends etc. etc.

Yeah the ETF will be really interesting! Man, some investment vehicle for the people who like to throw money at things! That's exactly what bictoin needs. What is your expectations on when it is ready to hit Wall Street?

I think price-wise we will see a top around 4k-5k, maybe higher maybe lower.

However I do think the chance of going higher than 5k will be higher than going lower than 3k if you look at previous rallies. Ofcourse historical data isn't everything but we have seen in the past that when the price is rising fast people will panic buy to not miss out, even if the price is already unsustainably high.

It appears that the acceptance of BTC by Dell is going to be a more gradual benefit to the market. Prices were not immediately affected, but will probably affect prices long term since other major corporations will most likely follow their lead.

Yes as stated before it hasn't had any impact on bitcoin value but it's a great news, now maybe other hardware companies are wondering to adopt btc, I'm thinking about HP, ASUS, ACER and others.
