Title: What should I do with over $4-5 worth in BTC?
Post by: lordscales91 on July 20, 2014, 05:18:04 PM
Hello everyone, since a few months ago I started gathering BTC from faucets and PTC's based on BTC, and recently I also sold some Latium and Doges(which I got from Freedoge.co.in) at Coin-Swap, and after all that time I have know at the time of writing this $4.60 and I'm waiting for the next Doge payout. I started gathering BTC because I wanted to make my free time more profitable, and also with the idea of purchase a Humble Bundle with BTC. For those who didn't know about it, Humble Bundle is a site where you can get some good games for just $1, but probably what you didn't know is that you can purchase it with BTC, there is a tiny link titled "or buy with Bitcoin!" below the Google Wallet payment button.

But the point is that I'm waiting for a Great Good Offer, or some offer with a game that I like, also there is another great place to buy games at good price: The Steam Store, sadly this one don't accept Bitcoin, yet...

So I'm wondering if I should try to sell the Bitcoins for dollars, that's why I opened this post.

I took a look at BTC-E, however it seems that is not possible to sell such small amount, or very difficult at least... I don't know exactly how works the order system there. At Coin-Swap there is a feature called Auto-Buy/Sell orders, these are orders that have their own balance, so for example if someone is asking for 100 LAT and you sell 5 LAT to him (by placing a sell order at the same price per LAT) the 5 Latium will be deducted from your account and the buy order, and you will receive the correspondent BTC. So the order will be asking now 95LAT. Is that feature available on BTC-E?

If that's the case I can try some workaround to get my money on PayPal, by withdrawing the dollars to OKPay first (the minimum withdrawal is just $1) and then going to Magnetic-Exchange which seems legit and exchange it for PayPal.

Another option is to sell them directly here to someone trustful.

Alternatively I can just wait for that Great Offer a little more, also the CEO of BitStamp in some kind of Bitcoin conference he said on an interview that Bitcoin value will rise up to $2,000, so maybe it's worth to wait for it.

What do you recommend me? Wait some more time, sell them through BTC-E (if possible) sell or them here.

Do not hold, you should do trading on lakebtc or bitfinex, not bitstamp.
Although the price is very stable now, but HFT still make you rich.

Good work on accumulating even a bit of Bitcoin. I suggest doing research around here, and following some crypto twitter feeds. If you're looking to make more, trading altcoins is very profitable, but also risky. Trading btc will not net you as large profits with your amount, but it is relatively stable, and should help you learn trading. Best of luck!

Yeah, I also though about trading, in fact there is an interesting anecdote that happened to me. Coin-Swap had some problems with the withdrawals 2 weeks ago, after they solved it, my withdrawals still didn't work, didn't even appear on the history, probably because the withdrawal was in some kind of Limbo xD. So I purchased a few DOGEs and succesfully withdrawn them, after that all the withdrawals are working fine. Later on I sold those DOGEs and even get some profit, something around 50 satoshis, but well... And this don't ends here, I tried to do that also on Latium and I get profit once more... 2/2 Profitable trades and were my first ones, I think I have some potential as trader HAHA, or maybe was just good luck, that's the most probable option though.

I wouldn't like hodling $4-5 worth in btc and they're not good enough to trade also imo. If you're not too worried about losing them, try gambling but do it keeping in mind that you might make something out of them or end up losing them all.

Ok I think I get it, HODL stands for HOLD and is intentionally miss-spelled for some reason... Well, I made my first purchase with BTC, the Humble Bundle of this week. The transaction was done through CoinBase so it was validated automatically and everything were fine.

But by the end of this week I will have again $4 (I was so near the $5, and the Humble purchase was just $1), so maybe I HOLD them and wait for the next good bundle

Hey, I discovered KHs Cloud Mining. What do you think, it will be profitable? I think that at least it's a better option than loosing them all at gambling.

I don't think you have even $5. If most of that is from faucets, like you say, then the transaction fees will be killer. What you have is dust.

Also, LOL at people suggesting that this guy trade with his $5.

You won't make anything with that little money/hashrate. 5$ won't really get you far.

Hold or gamble. Or join it with your main bitcoin satake, if you have one.

$5 of bitcoin is not worth to put on exchange and the exchanges taxes will eat almost all of it, and the profitability of trading will be almost nill.

Just hold your coins in some safe wallet.

I wouldn't bother with $5 even if it was in fiat

You can't do a lot with that amount of btc, could try investing in a new alt currency though it's very risky and you could end up losing the lot.

Easiest option is to hold  ;)

I'm not a game fan , I would personally would gamble It and try making at least $20 from It then I would hold or think how could I invest them and make even more. But if you decide to gamble you should minimally know what you are doing.

This should be a nice solution, 5$ are really a low amount of money, try some dice site and have some fun.
Investing them in bitcoins is safer but even if btc value will double, you will have earned only 5$.

First off, I don't know that spending months to earn $4 or $5 could ever be considered making your free time profitable.  When I first read the title of the post I thought it was a mistake and you really meant $400 - $500 or maybe you meant 4BTC to 5BTC.  Anyway, congratulations on having the perseverance to gather coins together.

As for what to do with them, purchasing a game bundle might be worthwhile since you'll at least get some hours of enjoyment from them.  You could always go the gambling route, too.  Be aware, though, that you spent months trying to accumulate that coin.  Hopefully you can get some months of enjoyment back :)

Since I am bullish on bitcoin price, I won't suggest you to sell your bitcoin now.
I would suggest you to earn more bitcoin with sig campaign and forget about those faucets, and then keep your bitcoin for a few years till bitcoin hits mainstream. :)

Paypal does absolutely not warrant any kind of premium as there is a huge risk to the seller even if it Is only a few dollars worth.

That state of mind is a good way to lose your money.
Never gamble is my opinion.

I recommend trading, do not bother with mining as your ROI will be tiny. Do some research where you can trade. I saw cryptsy offers a new automated trading not on their client which I've been using and it's perfect. It's never been easier to trade crypto's automatically like this so I recommend having a look at that and giving it a try!

Thats actually a good idea, forgot about that. Try holding onto your 5$, and if bitcoin hits one million dollars, you will have 8000$ (I think that is a good estimation?), which is awesome, but that might be a couple more years.

Do lending you can make some profit.
Lending isn't the right way. No one in the right mind would want a $5 loan. Even if they need it, they most likely would not provide collateral which puts you at the risk of the borrower defaulting. There are people who even scam for $3 in the lending forum.

If it's such a little amount that I means nothing to you, store in an offline wallet and just keep for years and see what happens.

Or if you don't want that hassle put it on a 10-1 long shot on some gambling website.  Or donate it to a charity.

Satoshidice requires at least 0.01, minusing the transaction fees. Bitcoin is worth about $600, 0.01 is $6 which would not be the minimum amount. Their house edge is also very big, so that gamblers might not win as much as lower house edge games.

Yeah, I purchased Mini Ninjas, along with other 3 games that may be good on the bundle, and it's awesome I will enjoy it. So the best option is to HODL them until another good Humble Bundle shows up XD. It will be worth, at least for me   :)

Investing with that $5 won't give you much profit, but using it to buy some games could bring you days and weeks of fun. :D

Goof around with them to learn about sending, receiving and storing bitcoins.  Work to add to your stash!  Gamble some if that's your thing.  One of the nice things about bitcoin is that you can gamble microscopic amounts of money!

I'd advise everyone new to Bitcoin to just put their BTC into cold storage, on a nice paper wallet and watch it grow. Of course they can take some part of it in order to get to know Bitcoin and play around, but your 'big' stash should be in cold storage, unless you exactly know what you're doing!

Only if you can accept the fact that you can lose everything, you can gamble. People either get addicted to gambling or just thought they can win more and bet more, losing all in the end. In the long run, you would most likely lose all.

Yeah it's a war against mathematics that you just can't win. They have a house edge, meaning the longer you play the more probable it is that you lose! It's like in school! Have you ever won anything in maths classes? Haha!

Goof around with them to learn about sending, receiving and storing bitcoins.  Work to add to your stash!  Gamble some if that's your thing.  One of the nice things about bitcoin is that you can gamble microscopic amounts of money!

Haha!

Very true.
In the long run, the house always win and the gamblers always lose. But hey gambling is fun lol. :D

You could try trading altcoins for fun, and maybe manage to transform that amount into something bigger.

Ok here's another idea. Get these little BTC in an exchange and buy some really really really low altcoin and hope it takes off, then cash out in BTC. Repeat this step until you have enough BTC to secure moon status in 10 years.

What about buying more bitcoin for investment, hold them in an offline wallet, and wait for the price to go 10x higher? ;D

You can always use an trusted escrow to escrow your transaction. However, I think it is possible to claim back the account using heir support. You would really need some trust ratings to make sure people would trust you. Try selling real life items. Maybe some things that is only available in your country.

So, you do realize you have gather only $4.6 for spending months on faucets and PTC, don't you?

You should have spent 2 months to get your account to member rank, and should have joined the a sig campaign to get way more than $4.6.

Bots are even worst. Given that you need human captcha solvers to solve recaptcha and solve media captchas, every one hour, you can only claim once which means that you are making a few hundred or thousand satoshi by a few faucet site. You are not only wasting electricity but you are also wasting money on captcha solving services.

Even worse: You are wasting your time! Time is the most precious thing we, as human beings, may have on this earth. We can't live forever and once time is gone, it's gone! Faucets are a nice thing to get people interested in BTC but they don't make you rich. Ever.*

What about actually working for money? It seems people seem to be willing to go to extreme lengths in order to get a few bucks when they could have earned a lot more by actually spending that time doing a decent or regular job!

Exactly.
Unless you are living in a third-world country, you could get a part-time job (whatever job you can find), and you should get $4.6 in an hour or two.

There is no pointing spending weeks and months on faucets to achieve something you can accomplished within an hour.

Keep them in a cold wallet. A paper wallet preferrably. They're pretty safe there and you can see how their value may appreciate over time. Keeping them in some online exchange or an online wallet is very risky, especially over long periods of time. Investing them is also risky as hell. There are a lot of scammers around here!

I think that this is going a little off-topic, but since some of you are saying that I "spent time" I will explain you why I didn't "spent time", because it was time that was already lost. God of War Ascension: stuck in the Archimedes trial, Pandora's Tower(Wii) it was a good game, but it has that time trial element that I hate, also it get too difficult at some point, Heavenly Sword: stuck in the final battle, because instead of letting you go to the battlefield you need to use a cannon to destroy the enemy ships, if Nariko were more like Kratos she will jump into the battlefield and destroy that ships herself, but no, you need to use a damn cannon and effect the ball in slow-motion to hit the ships weak points, which is something very difficult... And that were just the most important ones, and because of that I'm a little tired of videogames, well lastly I'm playing Mini-ninjas (which I purchased with BTC) and I love it.

But if you take out videogames what are left to do in your free time? I don't like reading, so that's not an option. I'm interested in 3D modelling, but I need a better computer to handle it correctly... So basically I'm in a point where my free time is lost, because I have nothing to do on it. That's why I decided to try to make that profitable, there was nothing to loose.

It's ironic however that even if I'm tired of videogames I ended purchasing videogames with the BTC that I gathered, that's because indie games may be better and more fun than some of the games mentioned above. I'm enjoying mini-ninjas more than Pandora's Tower for example, and it's so funny (ninininininininini-ninja).

I already decided that I will use BTC to purchase Humble Bundles, so there is no need to keep this topic open, thanks for your suggestions.

if you have a business flair and feel lucky, try to invest it in new crypto that have signs of being legitimate and can have success, but since it is a sum you can afford to lose then why not, you can turn out the 4 $ in 40$ in no time thanks to such strategy, but remember high risks, high gaines, which means that at the same time you can lose all the money invested, but if you are smart about it it should be fine

It isn't the best way unless you are a experienced trader. Since there is a high risk, you would lose money faster. I would rather place is somewhere safe and buy more to hold. In the long run, trading may not be the best option unless you are a very lucky and experienced alt coin trader.

For such small amounts the risk is not as big. It is true that it has been said that people have been known to scam for even less then .01BTC however I personally don't think it would be worth it to try to scam for such a small amount.

Agree. Might not be worth it to try and scam at current rates. But if bitcoin appreciates, then it is a different ball game. :D

Hahaha, don't believe him! Selling BTC via PayPal is a very dangerous thing! PayPal allows customers to do a chargeback, where they get their money back and your BTC are just gone. This may be a very well known scam tactic!

In my opinion, holding on to your coins is the best you can do - at least if you're comfortable staying in the Bitcoin game! If you invest in mining companies, stocks, etc. you risk losing a huge portion (or even everything) of your investment! It's a very dangerous game, if you ask me!

You should never assume that the price will appreciate when making a business decision with bitcoin. If you think the price will go up then you should buy on an exchange or via LBC. You should not accept a discounted payment just because you think the price will increase in the future.
