These stats are from a Forbes article from earlier this year:

--There are (or were in January) approximately 12,000,000 bitcoins mined
--47 people own 29% of the coins.
--930 people own 50% of the coins.
--approximately 10,000 people own 75% of the coins
--approximately 1,000,000 own the rest

I'm sure the numbers could be disputed, but close enough for rounding.  At that time, anyway, that meant 1,000,000 people owned 25% of 12,000,000 coins, or 3,000,000 coins.  That's an average of 3 coins per person, if you're not in the top 1%.

In fact, forget about the 1%.  If you're not in the 930 people (not many of them on this board, and if they are here, they likely won't answer), which is 0.093%, the average is only six coins.

Somehow, I suspect there will be much rounding UP, WAY UP in this thread.

I just hope to guess the top of the next bubble's peak to make some, but I know it's pretty hard...

So you actually day-traded successfully? That's a rare thing. Most people tend to lose a substantial amount of their savings when they are panicking! Look into the Wall Observer thread! ShroomsKit claims he had 2 BTC just yesterday and traded his way down to 1 BTC now.

But I don't want to tell you the exact amount, you see it makes people envy you, they just wanna hang around you because of your money. That stinks, haha. I don't day trade, I stopped doing that after going from about 800 bitcoins to 400 bitcoins as it jumped all over from $17 to $2 and up and down all over the place in between.

I buy the equivalent in bitcoins of what I spend in fiat. I took my dogs to the vet, went out to eat, went to the dump and spent some money toward my vacation next week so I bought the equivalent amount of bitcoins for those purchases.

Yeah, exactly, it is a weird kind of record with such modest price dip. I guess he used a lot of leverage. Otherwise, he would have to do a dozen of loosing trades in a row.

EDIT: BTW, I agree that most people loose money day trading, but daytrading != panic selling, they are completely different things ;).

I really don't know if he was leveraged. Don't think so. I don't have any idea whether he really halved his stash or whether this is even possible with the swings we've seen over the past couple days. In his case it definitely is panic selling/buying, though. He doesn't even try to daytrade, his sentiment switches literally every day from bull to bear and back again!

I'm not so sure about 1M, but the odds of winning with BTC is, in all likelihood, higher than 1%.  Assuming the definition of winning is: worth more than you paid for it.

I've often been surprised at how few coins some of the most prolific posters have. The head honcho of bittylicious.com said in a radio interview recently he had 20 BTC which blows my mind a bit.

The amount of people whose lives would be changed by a $10,000 coin is probably surprisingly modest.

Yeah, I know lots of people are not honest on these polls, and those people are generally answering in the top or bottom category, in an attempt to skew perceptions (depending on their goals). Hard to say, really. I'm not sure there is a significant number of folks who are simply "multiplying" their holdings. It's not like anyone is associating the results with participants (I mean, outside of forum administrators and the NSA). So there is little incentive for doing that. Ignoring the two extremes might be the best representation of speculation sub-forum goers.

Good point also consider that author completely fucked up the poll figures, there is a strange range in choice #2 which probably was meant to be 0.5  - 6

This should really be in the off topic section. I would also advise anyone reading this to not answer the OPs question as if you were to reveal how many bitcoin you own/control then it could subject you to a number of attacks, as an attacker would know that attempting to hack you could have some benefit, verses attempting to hack a random person may or may not have potential benefit.

You shouldn't be viewing BitcoinTalk with the same computer you use to store your BTC.

Problem solved.
This is not even a computer level issue, it is a personal identity level issue. If someone were to DOX you, after you posted that you have "x" BTC then anyone would know that you have that level of BTC and would likely attempt to launch an attack to steal your coins, either by hacking or by breaking into your house to steal your computers (among other potential attacks).

This is why you use strong passwords and encrypt your backups. It's only an issue for people who are shit at keeping important data secure. Which, yes, may be the majority.

We know that certain people here have hundreds of coins. Have we heard about them getting hacked, kidnapped or having their house robbed? We do not live in a Bond movie.

In the interest of putting my personal safety where my mouth is, I have at the moment about 15. Few more every month until the next rally. Come at me hackbros.

People's houses get robbed all the time because criminals think they have jewelery that can be sold, or because someone has cash that can be used to buy drugs.

The answer for me is never enough. :)

I try to be content with my holdings, and have been able to accumulate more through trading, but it's always a kick in the pants to think that I knew about bitcoin in 2010 and didn't buy until 2013....

At least it was summer 2013. ;D

Passwords are in my brain. Can't really hack that...yet.

Breaking into my house? Bring a pistol...because you're going to need it.

I hope for your sake that you have used sufficient randomization in what I am assuming are brain wallets.
You'd be surprised at how well many seemingly "random" words, even with misspelling, can be brute forced.

True, that's why using an 8 word Diceware passphrase is recommended.

I've often thought of using a Brainwallet but if something ever happened to me my family wouldn't have access to those coins.

The answer to the original question: Not enough. Last year people were content with $100 bitcoins. Seemed like a pretty even number. Just kidding, price shot up 10x.

Not a brainwallet you dips. An offline wallet with a strong password. Safer than any bank these days.

I own a handful, I guess. But I'm not comfortable telling the broad public about how much exactly my stash amounts to. Imagine telling the world you have 10 BTC in cold storage and 5 years later the price is at $100000, I guess a lot of people would be coming over to 'borrow' some money from you!

That's simple. Don't be a moneylender. Will find out real quick who your real friends are. And don't charge interest if you do either, that's what got all of us in the fiat mess we are in.

Yeah, I won't do that, but I guess it's a very sad feeling seeing all those people lining up just because of your money... Also you may become the target of people who try to blackmail you or demand ransom of some kind!

It's not as simple as that.

I tried to withdraw the 50 coins I had at Gox to a paper wallet a year ago when it became obvious something was fishy there.

They wouldn't let me withdraw without identity verification so I went about acquiring ID (I don't live in the kind of fascist regime that requires citizens to carry ID) and by the time I got it together, my 50BTC had already been "withdrawn" by someone else.

Needless to say, I immediately opened a ticket but was given a runaround for dozens of emails over several months until they finally imploded and I haven't heard from them since.

Luckily they represented less than a third of my coins at that time. At an average cost of less than $120 they still represented a significant loss but I was still firmly in the black. When the price broke a grand, I was furious at the thought of losing $50,000.00.

Of course I joined the class action lawsuit but I'm not holding my breath expecting anything back.

Sometimes shit happens.

Oh, how incredibly correct you are. People are shameless when it comes to borrowing your money...and *really* shameless when it comes to paying it back.

This couldn't be more true. Deep down you know who is going to pay you back before you lend out your money (outside of extenuating circumstances)

I don't think it's a matter of anyone being paid back "first".

It's more a matter of how many pennies on the dollar.

I'm not optimistic about it being anything sizeable. Lawyers and bureaucrats will get the lion's share.

Okay, fair enough. But there is still the matter of placing such a large part of your holdings in one place, especially an exchange. I have my coins in 3 different places (and spread over several times more wallets), and I'm just in the low double digits. And only a fraction at a time touches an exchange or other online service, not 90%+.

Indeed. At the time of my loss my other 112 coins were in cold storage.

The main reason I had 50 coins at Gox was to take advantage of possible flash price swings. I'd missed the chance to take advantage of the very predictable panic during the SatoshiDice sale and couldn't deposit or withdraw fiat at Gox so I left the 30 coins there in case a similar short-term opportunity presented itself in the future.

Leaving 30% of my coins in one place anywhere online was a big mistake.

Aww, sorry to hear that! But it was a wise move insofar, as you wanted to be able to save your wealth from being deminished in case of a flash-crash, that could happen at practicably every hour in the Bitcoin world. What you did was hedging against possible risks. Don't be too hard on yourself about this!

This is my point exactly. If someone were to say that they have a large amount of coins then others will have an incentive to try to find your identity and attempt to launch attacks to steal your coins. If you claim to have a small amount then they know it will not be worth their time.

What if you are not home? This is when the vast majority of house robberies happen. There is no way to stop them if you aren't home. Once they have the file/wallet that is password protected they can simply use a brute force password cracker to attempt to unlock the wallet.

What's your strategy if I may ask? :) Are you already an experienced trader or is this you first attempt? If you don't have any experience trading you may want to try it out on a demo account first. A lot of people lose their money because they can't keep their emotions under control!
