Title: What is a ripple?
Post by: Thekool1s on August 03, 2014, 08:10:23 AM
Can any body tell me what does this mean in the world of BTC?

From Wikipedia.org:

Quote from: Wikipedia
Ripple is a payment system, currency exchange and remittance network by Ripple Labs. It is built upon a distributed, open source internet protocol, consensus ledger and native currency called ripples (XRP). The Ripple network purports to enable "secure, instant and nearly free global financial transactions of any size with no chargebacks". It supports any fiat currency (dollars, yen, etc.), cryptocurrency (bitcoin, litecoin, etc.), commodity or other unit of value (frequent flier miles, mobile minutes, etc.).

Quote from: CrossCoin Ventures
Ripple is the most successful Crypto 2.0 protocol.  Ripple is an open source, peer-to-peer payments system with 3 – 5 second transaction clear times. Ripple lets you transfer any asset across the network, with automatic currency conversion and fast settlement, while featuring the irreversibility, distributed robustness, and negligible fees that come with cryptocurrency technology.

I don't know too much about it, but I think it has something called "gateways" that make it work like a decentralized exchange. It lets you transfer and convert a variety of currencies using the gateways and XRP is the currency used internally within the Ripple ecosystem to facilitate this.

It's also a scam apparently. Have a look over on the alt coin section or google about it.

You mean Ripplescam.org? Didn't TradeFortress own that website or something?

I think it is not completely decentralized, but distributed. And it is backed by a for-profit company. Or perhaps I am thinking of something else? ???

it was a coin by Google or something like that

Huh? A coin by Google? Are you sure about this? It would be amazing if a company as big as Google decided to launch their own coin.

The idea was you could send dollars to me and I would recieve them in Euro
Or whatever currency we wanted, ripples/xbt would be used to pay for the transaction by being destroyed.

Same as always people made money off it from speculation.
Haven't heard anything else since, dunno if it's still even being developed
Or if they've just given up on it.

Google had nothing to do with it.

Forget Ripple. Jed already dumped his pre-mine, and now he has forked Ripple into Stellar. Go on and get your Stellars then. ;D

Its some kind of payment network. There have been some threads about it on this board. There has been a lot of noise about it, but it doesn't seem to be going anywhere.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ripple_%28payment_protocol%29 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ripple_%28payment_protocol%29)

It's also some altcoin called Ripple or XRP. See https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=174854.0 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=174854.0)

Wouldn't bother with ripple to be honest, it's a scam and not worth the time. There are some threads about it around the forums but I would not say that they all contain praise for this.

Stellar is just a improvement on ripple it seems.  :( But the fact that it marketed by linking facebook {Identity} to it, makes me itchi in the wrong places.

Will you link your bank account to your facebook account? Nope not for me sorry.  ;)

Really? Those Stellars everyone is talking about are forked Ripples? Holy cow... The thing is: Altcoins really don't get my attention anymore. I just stay with BTC I guess. It's the safest bet because it's the one with the biggest traction and active development.

When BTC is back in a strong bull market, I think we might see 2013-like bubbles in altcoins again. They will get your attention again then. ;)

Ripple is just another dying altcoin
And also some kind of distributed banking system/exchange

So better know what you talking about before talk

IIRC, Jed is in fact the actual founder of mtgox and later sold it to Mark Karpeles.
Interestingly, mtgox is now dead and ripple is slowly dying. :)

I believe Jed retained a share of ownership in Gox, actually. Supposedly did not have a hand in management. But he has a shady history alright. And Ripple was just carried out horribly. I guess he wants to give it another go with Stellar. Can't lie, the UI is fantastic.

Its not a 'scam' just frowned upon because it is centralised

Ripple is a centralized turd of a currency, avoid like the plague.

Ripple is an old system. Get introduced to Stellar. It is the same thing from the same founder in early stage. Grab Stellar, earn money :)

Stellar is a fork of ripple, made by the creator of ripple.

So I think they will likely be more or less the same. Maybe with a bigger pump-dump, but still the same

Didn't know Stellar is so closely related to Ripple.
May be I should buy some Stellar before the pump starts lol. :P

It's all pretty shady, to be honest. Jed (of Mt Gox fame) selling all his XRP premine and then forking Ripple into Stellar? People are just desperate for a pump and dump. And I'm sure they'll get it too.

I have used ripples and I was amazed by speed. Takes less than 5 seconds to send and receive all types of transactions. However getting ripple can get expensive.

Where can you get stellar without sharing facebook account?

You can get stellars by confirming your email address, but the biggest part of STR can be earned only through facebook authentication.
With this method is amost impossible to cheat.

Stick with what you're good at? Ripple (and the Stellar fork are centralized and pre-mined). Investing in them is like throwing you btc in a whole in the ground.

Nah, I think Stellar is gonna have an epic pump or two before it's "look out below!" time. It's already doubled (and pulled back a bit) since these posts in the last day or two.

Buy buy buy!!! :D
