The S3 is much more efficient than the S1 I believe.

I currently have 1 Avalon 3 290gh module hashing away. I've had offers of S1's now from a number of people but I think they're too inefficient nowadays. I think the only thing to do from here is to continue mining until I can afford another Avalon 3 or similar (maybe Rockminer or BTCGarden) or something used and more effiecient pops up! Many thanks!
