Title: What businesses does Bitcoin need?
Post by: Baitty on August 10, 2014, 01:04:48 AM
I've always wondered what businesses would benefit Bitcoin hugely. We have a few websites which offer to buy from any website for example which have helped Bitcoin massively. but what other businesses are needed which are non existent in the Bitcoin world?

Competent payment processors.  Coinbase is a joke, and has ripped off a handful of people to get its self started.  Not sure how bitstamp is doing over there, but they seem to have their act together.

All sorts of businesses....Bitcoin is a currency and currencies should be used everywhere.

If you're asking which ones would benefit Bitcoin more than others I would say the online retailers & sales directories such as ebay.

if your talking about website stores, then id say any/all...

if your talking bricks and mortar stores:
grocery stores, to buy your loaf of bread, baked beans and toilet roll
hardware/DIY stores, wood nails and varnish
car fuel stations

the the ultimate bitcoin infrastructure maker would be to get these businesses to hav their suppliers accept bitcoin, thus making it no longer a 'gimmick' to simply accept btc and instantly convert to bitcoin. but instead hoard bitcoin and use bitcoin to restock products and pay staff in bitcoin.

The few transactions that I've received through Coinpayments.net seemed to go all right. Has anyone here tried using the Mycellium wallet?

And I figure what we really need right now is to get some wholesalers like AHI Distribution (https://ahidistribution.com/) and Cutting Edge Products (http://www.cuttingedgeproducts.net/index.php) on board so we've got one more step in the supply chain taken care of. Maybe they'll start noticing when they start getting lots of emails from people who can sell stuff either on their own ecommerce sites or on the Bitcoin marketplaces.

commodity and future contracts with BTC are provided. The services should be reliable and accountable. It will stabilise the price of btc. In the other hand, companies which accept btc payment could hoard btc and use BTC future contract to eliminate the falling price risk. If the price is increasing, the companies could make a lot more return.

As dumb as it sounds, i think BTC would benefit from a department store like Nordstroms starting to accept BTC. It would get an entire different group of people and a lot of women using cryptos

The largest potential for profit right now is payment processors such as coinbase and bitpay.

Next in line for large grow would be auction and retail type web store offering products for bitcoin.

Bitcoin needs any and all businesses, not just huge or large retailers. If we want it to suceed as a currency we need to be able to spend it on as many things as possible from groceries to porn and everything in between.

I imagine vending machines would be the next logical step. Imagine about to catch the metro and you feel like a ice cold pepsi, just press a button and scan the QR code. Surely this is already happening, maybe in advanced places like Japan?

I agree with the people saying 'any and all'. I want to be able to spend my coins both online and on the highstreet. Vending machines would be a good idea and I'm sure they will take off in the future. Paying with a smartphone would probably be a quick and easy process.

All we need to major retail chains accept bitcoin payments. Amazon for starters, then all hardware online stores out there - thats for the starters. If others see that this is good business avalanche will start and bitcoin will be everywhere...

I completely agree that grocery stores would be great. It makes bitcoin spendable in a market that we all need to use in order to survive...food. I rarely spend bitcoins, but if my grocery store accepted Bitcoins I would definitely use them (and buy more to replenish supply of course), especially if they offered a discount since they would save money by not having to pay credit processor fees and reduced fraud risk.

I also think that the biggest and most impactful "market" would be suppliers, if the people that supply the physical stores accepted bitcoins, then the stores could accept bitcoins, keep a large percentage of the bitcoins as actual bitcoins (instead of instantly converting it to cash) and then pay their suppliers in bitcoin. Their suppliers can then pay their workers in bitcoin, the workers can then use their bitcoin in stores and the "wheels go round and round" creating a full bitcoin economy.

Or one could argue that buying oil with "massively inflated usd" is actually better than using your "forever increasing value of a deflationary bitcoin". Bitcoin needs to be able to be used for purchases (which it now can at a small selection of major retailers), but to become a true economy we need suppliers to accept it and for retailers to offer it to their employees as their bonus or percentage of their income (props to overstock on this part).

Create the entire market loop and bitcoin adoption will be unbelievably rapid.

When we consider in terms of online stores, Bitcoin can be adopted by any shops. Any shops will help. But if you consider in terms of shops in places, it is best if grocery store and other shops where people go frequently.
Kindly,

Any, but I want to see is small discounts for paying with bitcoin. As it is now, I will still use credit cards wherever I can for the 1%-5% cash back. Given the low transaction fees, irreversability, and lack of account fraud, a btc discount should be a no-brainer.

Bitcoin needs every possible business from good to bad. You should be able to buy food or drugs with it and anything else you desire.

More travel type of businesses. Currency exchange rates when traveling international are a rip off. Bit coin could make that easy and seamless. Popular destinations would probably see a lot more bit coin retailers popping up as well.

id say when a merchant first adopts bitcoin they wont instantly give discounts, they would while dipping their toe in the water ensure the $10 customer purchase, ensures they get $10 in the merchants bank account. i would say later once the merchant has fully grasped bitcoin and started to keep 'profits' (after restock/wages) as bitcoin, then the merchants could offer discounts. thats if any only if they were to be bitcoin investors.

but keep in mind. merchants have costs they have to cover that same week(stock/building rent/wages), so dont expect merchants to offer discounts because you think merchants will hoard coins for months, purely to break even.. merchants are not in the investment business, they are in the retail business. so dont expect discounts to be an expected standard.
and also the 'bitcoiner' consumer is usually the investor so the consumer has normally already made profit from their hoard so most mom and pop stores and small businesses will just think the consumers are being greedy.

after all if you bought bitcoin last week at $550 for 1btc. and you want to buy a $550 laptop this week. you only need to spend 0.92btc. so without a merchant having to discount anything. the consumer gets a laptop and still has 0.08btc funds left over, purely due to the exchange rate price change.

in short.
the deflationary nature of bitcoin itself is the 2% "cashback", without even having to demand a discount from merchants

I agree, if a bank is offering cash back for using their credit card then it makes more sense to use a credit card for the cash back and the consumer protections. The amount you earn from the cash back ultimately comes from the merchant, so if they can offer a payment method that does not include these costs they might as well offer some kind of discount to entice people to use it.

Yea I agree with that. Would be great to book a holiday with flights and accomodation included.

I've always wondered what businesses would benefit Bitcoin hugely. We have a few websites which offer to buy from any website for example which have helped Bitcoin massively. but what other businesses are needed which are non existent in the Bitcoin world?

Bitcoin really needs some more honest and easy to use escrow services that don't only rely on this forum and the trust you can earn here. It needs to be available to everyone on the Web using Bitcoin, man. You could charge a small percentage!

I think there is some sites and services like that, though what makes you think they would be any more trustworthy than this forum? I'd rather use a trusted escrower here to be honest.

Yeah they first need to build up that trust, that's for sure! What sited are you talking about? I don't know any of those! If they build up a big company people will be more likely to trust them!

All businesses would benefit from accepting bitcoin which is why I am unsure as to why so many more businesses are not taking that on board. If anything I think it would be great to see retail businesses accept bitcoin more. Retail businesses are probably the most popular so seeing these accept bitcoins more may get bitcoin out there a bit more and allow people to become more interested if they wish to.

parking meters / parking systems ... imagine just having a wallet card that u put on the dash, or still use the ticket print out.
vending machines at major event places
metro public transportation
taxis
concert venues
fair grounds

the most logical next step is to attack points where cash / change are a problem or micro transactions that are cost prohibitive with CC.

merchants who embrace reward systems and customer tracking , could base anything off a wallet.

Wow.   Parking meters?   Gas stations?

Bitcoin needs a remittances network.  Worldwide.

One with contracts with 711's around the world, so that even in a village in remote Thailand, someone can withdraw cash sent to them in Bitcoin.

The single business imo that would push the price of BTC through the roof, would be the business that could convert gold investors into BTC investors.

Someone actively working in that Sphere, would have a dramatic impact on BTC But for that to happen, people invested in gold, would have to see the store value in BTC and sell their gold and buy BTC

Recently it would not be a good investment, because the price is stagnated around $500 to $600 and it's not showing upward movement.

if you mean which companies need to get on board to help push adoption, then IMHO proper ATMs which let the lazy ass Joe Publics get BTC quick and easy. Going through the security stuff with the exchanges just puts people off, and while the avg chap on the street doesnt own BTC then many businesses wont bother looking into it. I know getoknowurcustomer is a thing to stop laundering, but ATMs could have purchase limits of 100$ before asking for ID or something. we just need to get a lot of ppl to buy $5 worth each and were away.

After that Id say proper PR and marketing companies need to jump in and start putting ads on TV et al (while BTC is not a sponsor of these media outlets, then it will remain a 'headline scare panic' story it is now).

If you mean which companies should adopt BTC? Then charities, they would benefit more than anyone: they could quickly get money in emergencies, people would be far more likely to send $1 by sharing a hashtag than going through the BS they have now (separate website, enter visa info, $5min to cover charges etc). All they would need to do is share pictures of kids dieing over FB with a donate hashtag attached and they would get loads more than the current channels. Cant really see why they didnt do this already. http://www.coindesk.com/changetip-brings-bitcoin-micropayments-youtube-tumblr/

beyond this, I think a company that makes it easy for ppl to buy BTC in places like Africa where they would really benefit from it. I have no idea how the average person in Botswana or Uganda are supposed to buy BTC right now... 37coins would work well there, but they need to be able to buy them first!

I think that it will be great if some ''big'' global companies as Google, Microsoft and others accept bitcoin first.
This will help Bitcoin become mainstream and after that many small merchants will follow and accept bitoin to :)
