Title: Honoring Hal Finney Post by: coinguycanada on August 30, 2014, 02:33:47 AM I was wracking my brain on a way to honor Hal, and this is the idea I came up with. I shared on Reddit, Twitter, and other places, but I thought I would share here too. I propose we rename 0.0000001 BTC as the Finney. Just as we honor Satoshi for 0.00000001.
Or using scientific notification: 1e-7 BTC = 1 finney 1e-8 BTC = 1 satoshi You can see other comments/discussion on Reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/2ewp3z/i_propose_we_rename_00000001_btc_as_the_finney/ Not sure how something like this becomes official, but I guess if enough people use it, then it becomes part of the Bitcoin language. Isn't it the millibit that needs a new name? Title: Re: Honoring Hal Finney Post by: dunand on August 30, 2014, 04:31:18 AM Finney=millibit !

Finney sounds pretty good as well. I can see that catching on.
Title: Re: Honoring Hal Finney Post by: Gnarrrly on September 12, 2014, 05:22:32 PM Finney sounds great, we still need to make people understand how to use BTC tho.
Title: Re: Honoring Hal Finney Post by: oceans on September 12, 2014, 05:39:51 PM Sounds like a good idea and a great way to honor him and with Finney being catchy I see it really working out as well. Hopefully something like this will take off and we will see it used a lot more in his honor :)

Title: Re: Honoring Hal Finney Post by: pawel7777 on September 12, 2014, 08:47:08 PM Ethereum already decided to use "finney" (before Hal passed away):
from whitepaper: Quote Currency And Issuance The Ethereum network includes its own built-in currency, ether, which serves the dual purpose of providing a primary liquidity layer to allow for efficient exchange between various types of digital assets and, more importantly, of providing a mechanism for paying transaction fees. For convenience and to avoid future argument (see the current mBTC/uBTC/satoshi debate in Bitcoin), the denominations will be pre-labelled: ● 1: wei ● 10^12: szabo ● 10^15: finney ● 10^18: ether So the name is taken. But, from nearly a year earlier... We already have the satoshi for a small increment - I propose the next named small increment be somehow related to Hal Finney: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=155054.0 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=155054.0) Eg: (1 BTC = 100,000,000 Satoshi); (1 BTC = 1,000,000 Finneys) Title: Re: Honoring Hal Finney Post by: pawel7777 on September 12, 2014, 09:35:23 PM "I propose..." doesn't count.

I don't think we need names for these very small denominations for bitcoin at all. I agree with having the satashi because it is the smallest possible denomination, but anything in terms of more then 3 decimal places will really never be used because three decimal places to the right of bitcoin is roughly $.50 and there is no real value to trading in these increments. With that being said I do not think it is appropriate to "honor" him in this way. I think it would actually cause an unwanted amount of attention at his family which would have effects contrary to your goals.

Title: Re: Honoring Hal Finney Post by: AaronCraig on September 14, 2014, 03:10:42 PM Can we start using scientific notation for cases like this please?
1e-7 BTC = 1 finney is what you propose if I didn't miscount 1e-8 BTC = 1 satoshi Title: Re: Honoring Hal Finney Post by: Mr Crabs on September 14, 2014, 03:18:23 PM you own me 3 Finney! ;D God damned Loch Ness Monster! I already told you I don't have 3 Finney! Lol I immediately thought of that South Park episode as soon as I read that. I back a denomination being called a Finny. Would be a nice thing to do for him and it sounds good too. Title: Re: Honoring Hal Finney Post by: proofofarat on September 14, 2014, 04:43:36 PM I want to make a case for replacing "bits" with "hals" or "finneys". I think this would be a fitting tribute right alongside Satoshi forever onward as long as Bitcoin exists.
Title: Re: Honoring Hal Finney Post by: Unkle on September 14, 2014, 04:45:15 PM I think it's a great idea, but how can we make this officially happen?

Title: Re: Honoring Hal Finney Post by: bitkilo on September 15, 2014, 06:19:40 AM Sounds good to me but should a Finney be worth more than a Satoshi?
There's a good argument starter. Title: Re: Honoring Hal Finney Post by: hv_ on September 27, 2017, 01:47:19 PM Smart Phone named "Hal Finney" :
