I was wracking my brain on a way to honor Hal, and this is the idea I came up with. I shared on Reddit, Twitter, and other places, but I thought I would share here too. I propose we rename 0.0000001 BTC as the Finney. Just as we honor Satoshi for 0.00000001.

Or using scientific notification:

1e-7 BTC = 1 finney
1e-8 BTC = 1 satoshi

You can see other comments/discussion on Reddit:
http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/2ewp3z/i_propose_we_rename_00000001_btc_as_the_finney/

Not sure how something like this becomes official, but I guess if enough people use it, then it becomes part of the Bitcoin language.

Isn't it the millibit that needs a new name?

I'd back renaming a denomination after him. Finney sounds pretty good as well. I can see that catching on.

Sounds like a good idea and a great way to honor him and with Finney being catchy I see it really working out as well. Hopefully something like this will take off and we will see it used a lot more in his honor Smiley

But, from nearly a year earlier...

We already have the satoshi for a small increment - I propose the next named small increment be somehow related to Hal Finneyhttps://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=155054.0

Eg:  (1 BTC = 100,000,000 Satoshi); (1 BTC = 1,000,000 Finneys)

I don't think we need names for these very small denominations for bitcoin at all. I agree with having the satashi because it is the smallest possible denomination, but anything in terms of more then 3 decimal places will really never be used because three decimal places to the right of bitcoin is roughly $.50 and there is no real value to trading in these increments.

I do think that Hal Finney did make great conurbations to bitcoin and that bitcoin would likely not be where it is today if it was not for him. With that being said I do not think it is appropriate to "honor" him in this way. I think it would actually cause an unwanted amount of attention at his family which would have effects contrary to your goals.
