I've never seen someone get tips or donations this way. On reddit, no one donates to the mods except for the /r/Bitcoin mods. You're right that very few people tip but I don't think you can say that nobody does.

How many times have you spent a lot of time helping someone out? I have read a few posts where people sent someone a tip for helping them out. |
