Title: What is the 'best' coin to mine with CPUs?
Post by: aso118 on September 13, 2014, 11:30:08 PM
For a long time, Primecoin was 'the' CPU coin along with a few others.  But, I haven't really seen much as far as the 'most profitable' cpu coins to mine; its all ASICs and GPUs.

Are there any coins worth mining with just CPU?

I think none? Maybe I'm wrong but it can't be profitable. Try to find here something that will suite you (http://www.coinwarz.com/cryptocurrency).

That's what I mean - there have been a lot of development around 11x, 13x, 15x for GPUs and ASIC developments for SHA-256 and Scrypt, but what about CPU mining?  Is it just completely unprofitable to CPU?  Or is there an algo I'm missing?

Edit - Maybe a better way to answer my question is with a question; 'Is anyone CPU mining? And if so, what coin/algo are you mining?'

You will find few and far between.  Most cpu coins are able to be done with GPU's (don't want to say all becuse i could be wrong).  I would do some roi as normally these day's most will run more electricity then you make on CPU / GPU.

Currently GPUs can mine on both SHA-256 and Scrypt so sadly there aren't any CPU-only coins.. Unless someone would like to make one up?

There are other algos beyone sha and scrypt.

Some coins claim they are CPU only, never stopped to verify if it is true or not

Sure there are other Algos but are there any coins based on any other than SHA and Scrypt?

I think it's useless to use the CPU to mine, I fear we are rapidly damaged the CPU, is it better to buy a tool, or use the VPS for cloudmining

You are right it's useless and it can damage your your CPU too if you tweak the settings too hard.

Try with the Jackpot coin, it should be one of the best coins you can mine with the CPU at the moment.

Theres only one coin that you can mine with cpu and make bank - MONERO.

CPU/GPU mining at the moment is 1/1.  Mine while it lasts..

The stupidity of people here who automatically assume that CPU mining will automatically destroy your PC is too damn high.

Running your CPU at 90-95% with decent cooling (i.e. doesn't go about 80 Celsius - and stays in the mid-70s most of the time) won't noticeably hurt your laptop / desktop's lifespan.

I've noticed this as well.  And it doesn't seem to be on too many exchanges yet.  I heard that cryptsy couldn't add it because it the wallet address length was too long?!?!

I think only Primecoins for CPU mining.  ;D

I've been considering mining Primecoins for months - but it seems like the price continue to drop.  Has there been any new development to the coin?  Or is it also (eventually) doomed to the GPUs?

CPU mining is neither profitable nor good for CPU. You would rather get your CPU damaged.

Well, I have several old computers that are 'ready for the dumpster' and I don't really care if they experience any kind of damage.  And with winter right around the corner, I wouldn't mind a small loss for the extra heat.  I just know that cpu mining was the 'new' and 'coolest' thing when Primecoin came out, but now that doesn't even seem profitable.  It doesn't seem like there are any 'popular' CPU coins right now.

Dirt cheap as in free.   CPU and GPU mining is for the nostalgic or college kids that have the university paying for electricity.  The mining industry has matured beyond CPUs and GPU.

I'm afraid you're right - its kind of scary isn't it?  Wasn't one of the key concepts of all crytpo-currency that everyone 'owns' it and was able to mine it?  That way there are 'millions' of peers rather then a few big 'monopolies' that 'controlling' the currency.  Everyday it seems like there are fewer and fewer (bitcoin) miners and most other currencies are following suit...  Is a crypto-world safe with only a few dozen 'big' miners?  I've been pondering it for quite awhile...

Sounds quite harsh, but unfortunately I must admit that you're right. The only coin right now could rescue home/small time miners is BURST using PoC.

But now its already centralised, in some months it will become a completely centralised one.

The main problem is: as long as you mine using mass produced hardware, of course it will not be profitable.
It's just an implication of how the system works, to be profitable you must have more power than the others and this is unlikely to happen as they have access to the very same hardware, with difficulty equalizing everything.

Back to the point.
What is the 'best' coin to mine with CPUs?

I've been looking at XMG a bit... but I'm not at ease with their "fork every other week" approach.
Following.

There is no best coin, just look at the options and compare the computing tasks involved in feeeding different kind of coins. Gridcoin for example is a good option to mine with a CPU. Miners can choose BOINC projects to partake from, tailored towards their hardware. This means that payout is in scale, or even the same as with GPUs.

i guess i could go both ways with this thread,

CPU mining is ok i guess. But it doesn't cost very much to grab one or two grid seeds.

i bought 2 of them around 65$ for both on ebay. (including the psu. most dont so they can be cheaper if you already have it)

You can buy higher end stuff like block erupter cubes and all the crazier stuff but i decided to start on a mini miner budget.

i use to cpu mine but my quad core got so hot being a laptop it was cheaper to buy asic scrypt miners and a fairly cheap hub.

just my thoughts. Correct me if you need too.. i'm fairly new to mining threw asic my first miner was a set of 5 block erupters haha
