What will you do if you had a time machine that could go to the past and the future. But you can only use it once. (ie. you can't take the time machine with you)?

Be sure not to end up in the past with notes printed in 2014... :D

I would probably travel back to the 1920s and make sure that Tesla's inventions came to fruition rather than being seized by the FBI upon his death never to be seen again. I truly believe his inventions would have changed the world as we know it.

I would travel to the future where transporter technology is perfected.  It would be nice never having to poop again.  :)

Problem with a time machine that you can only use once is, it will dump you into empty space. Either the earth has gone past the spot, or the earth hasn't reached the spot yet.

If you do it, your best bet is to go into the future. Do it inside a glider that can enter the atmosphere and glide to the earth safely. That way, if the earth ever catches up to the position you are at, you will be ready to glide back.

Odds are, however, that you will be taking your planetary motion with you, along with your time movement. This means that you will be completely lost in space once you get there, always a little ahead of the earth, or - if you go past - a little behind it.

Be careful about jumping only a split second. You just might wind up inside the earth. Don't know what would happen with your material trying to occupy the same position that some other material is occupying. But it might cause such a nuclear explosion that it would knock the whole earth over into the next solar system, or something.

Actually, I think it might be even worse than that: in your scenario, you seem to be assuming the jump will at least leave you somewhere in the Solar System, so you could try to time your jump to coincide with a suitable location - but in reality, not only does the Earth move around the Sun, but the Sun moves around the Milky Way in a ~250 million year cycle, and the Milky Way also moves in relation to cosmological frames of reference.

So, anyone carelessly using a time machine will likely end up in empty space, and very, very far from where they intended to be.

That's not the perfect deal imho, we want one that works infinite times! if it work once and you go to a less civilized era and even if you do gain money (taking Pepper or something to the past) or dominate the world you still wouldn't achieve all of your want since some weren't even made :P

Our time machines work many times, but we have to make sure it works at least twice before we go anywhere. And access to it is very restricted by the government.

And we always face the difficulty of the language, like the archaic one I am using now. But my software is taking care of all that. So, no worries.

Just be careful. For example, if you went back 10 minutes in time, you would be out in empty space, simply because the earth and the whole solar system was millions of miles away, and hasn't gotten to this location yet.

I would go back to 2008 and start putting any CPU I could get on mining Bitcoin.

I would also have taken different courses, and would have studied computer science and economics. We are on the brink of a crisis and I believe that cryptos can provide the solution, and I feel severely lacking in the skills to contribute. Its also the reason why I got sold on Daniel Larimer's vision and got involved in Bitshares.

Being an age-old fan of Back to the Future (the trilogy), I have the occasional Marty McFly type dream.

Maybe I could go back 50-odd years and somehow marry the lovely lady I had a crush on in my high school days (http://imgur.com/kNAHL10) (my then best friend's Mum, P.H. (1944-2009), God bless her soul; linked photo is taken from the public domain). But in that parallel universe, my best friend couldn't then exist (!) and we couldn't have that. Also, life as a coloured person in the 1960s (in a majority white western country) wasn't necessarily always all that flash, even if the music sounded much better than most of today's filth.

Being able to use the time machine only one time poses an interesting dilemma, a very different situation from the BBC TV show Goodnight Sweetheart with its time portal, the novel 11/22/63 with similar, or of course Back to the Future (1,21 GW a prerequisite!).

Obvious answer. Invest life savings in bitcoins at a couple pennies per btc.
Sell at the all time high. As it is only a handful of years this would give me access to the time machine again. As I would only have to wait a few years until this moment again. I would take the cash with me and do it again. Making certain all of the bills I pull out at the all time high are pre 2008 bills just to make certain no one will be able to be suspicious. Then when I repeat the process I would be the richest man alive.

I had a time machine many sad events that happen in my life will provably not happen. I go to the future find a cure to aging, bring the all new technology with me to the past when I'm still young.

I would go to 2100, hopefully by then the Keynesian ponzi scheme will end, and a true free and voluntarist Austrian-Economy society will welcome me where there would be no tyrants to rule over us.

To anyone going back in time to buy massive amounts of bitcoin you'd throw the balance of buy/sell's off and make changes to the price too early perhaps preventing us from ever hitting the peaks we had. ;)

Out of curiosity: assuming things go as planned, and that close to a century has passed, what would you actually do for a living? At the current rate of technological development, wouldn't you risk being hopelessly obsolete in such a society? :P

I learn fast, besides a free society would only be full of opportunities. I mean do you know what "freedom" means?

I know its an extremist concept in these statist days, but it actually means I could do anything until I dont hurt anybody.

At best I would see what the trends are in the market and I would become a billionaire without paying any racket to the statists.

I don't want to put down your sense of self-reliance here, but it seems to me that you are severely underestimating how much society will change in the coming 100 years - barring any great upheaval, that is. You might be tempted to look back 100 years to help in making such a comparison, but that's likely not enough; perhaps 200 or 300 years would be more accurate.

You might call it a free voluntarist society on the surface, but underneath, you will probably have but a tenuous grasp of the culture and social norms of the time. How would you even interact with other people, when most would see you as a lunatic from another age? Further, technology will certainly have advanced far beyond our expectations: Facebook mark III? Try global telepathic messaging systems, or whatever. :P And even if things like genetic engineering haven't become commonplace by then, you would still be far removed from it all. In other words, a poor, destitute person of that period, having at least been born and experienced beforehand a portion of such a society, would have far better chances at a decent life than you, or most any person from this period, I'd think.

Also, even in an anarcho-capitalist society, land would still be owned by someone - at least the developed portions. So, if you actually found someone willing to deal with you, and you somehow had something they'd be interested in, wouldn't you still have some form of rent associated with your use of the land to sell fish, services, or what have you, as well as for accommodation? Perhaps not state imposed, perhaps better, but taxes by another name, nonetheless?

Nah thats too far ahead, I don't think you will find any telepathic technology by than, I`m not even sure if that technology is even possible considering the laws of physics.

Maybe in 3000, but definitely not in 2100, i mean there hasnt been much change since 1700, the language surely didnt changes much, we had technological and scientific changes, but thats all. The average life of the average people is still exactly the same. They are born, they are indoctrinated, then they work all their life, and then they die.

It is the same as in 1700, the culture is exactly the same, with some minor "trend" changes like from bookreading to MMO games and such, but really if you look into it, there wasnt any major change.

So I`m sure in 2100,if we survive the collapse and dont nuke ourselfs, the society will still be the same, even if we would live in an an-cap society. Sure life would be easier, with all the gadgets, but people will remain people.

Until we are human, and dont evolve into a drastically other species, we will remain the same. There will be always those who can't keep up with technology, I mean even now there are islands near India where people live like in the stone age without technology and electrcity, in the jungle. So in 2100 those primitive 2000-ers would make themselves an isolated place and live there , I would be just fine off with them, until I learn whats going on :D

I'd start cashing out my bitcoins and litecoins in late 2013 and wait six more months and then start cashing out my NXT.

I'd go back a few decades and convince the marketing guy at Smuckers to call their peanut butter "JIFFY" instead of "JIF".

Then I'd wait it out until the present and take a second trip back to the early 1900's and visit NY. There I'd locate the immigration officer at Coney Island and advise him that a couple will be arriving from Europe named Stan and Jan and that the correct spelling of their last name is "BERENSTIEN" not "BERENSTAIN".

It's very simple.

I`d go back to the roman empire era, steal all their gold, and then come back and sell them all.

this is something always i've wondered myself.. There is so many places you can watch in the past, but is just past... one thing i've alwas been courious is about Jesuchrist. And then, to the future, maybe 2200, 2300, travelling through the stars, planets etc... Discovering new species.. etc.. that's kinda my dream.

Those that choose to go backwards may attempt to obtain wealth, prevent wars or health epidemics based on their knowledge. Changing the past could potentially be very dangerous, as it could alter history's time line, and therewith present and future. An small change may lead to a future where satoshi would not even exist!

Please do not time travel back to a time pre bitcoin.

Traveling to the future presents the problem that you may not exist then.

Time machine is a very dangerous thing. Should not play with it. The farther you go back in time the bigger it change the future. If you go back one million years ago and kill just one mosquito or fly it can cause a big change in the current time.

I would go back to the 70's and go to all the concerts I could. There are good bands and all right now, but the atmosphere and the excitement of that era is totally different, people were more into the music and the whole experience.
