Title: [IDEA] Plastic QR codes
Post by: TeslaUa on June 07, 2012, 09:56:32 AM
Hey,

Is it possible to organize a very cheap and very massive production of plastic QR-code tags that users could carry as real life key-chain dongles, wallet cards and even tucking them to real life objects to sell or donate.

That would be massive invasion move into RL. After all everyone is expected to use bitcoin with their smartphone and all wallet apps do scan QR-codes.

The QR-code tag ideally should be tough and durable. Black and White could be not a paint, but (laser?) etching or dipping to show other color layer in two layered plastic (have no idea how expensive that is).

The challenge as I see it is to be able to make them all unique cheap as opposed to mass-production of identical things.

Any experts in the field?

Look in Thailand or China. ^^

But wouldn't have the user to submit his address first?

I'm not sure if that's what the OP had in mind. I'd think something more bling would be cool.

Actually gave me a cool idea myself  :P

How cheap do you need them to be?  A digital card printer can print black resin (virtually indestructible) on PVC card for about $0.15 ea.

You mean like this?

https://bit-pay.com/cards.html (https://bit-pay.com/cards.html)

I've got one on my keyring too.  credit-card durability plastic.  If you send me money I get a text message alert.  depending on my profile settings, the bitcoins can be forwarded to my wallet of choice, or cashed out and deposited into my bank account.

Best of all - if I lose this (or post it on the internet) the only thing someone can do - is give me money!

Then the address of the card is really yours and depends of you that forwarded correctly to the client?

My deposit keychain, UV resistant and waterproof ;)

nice.  now if we can get a million people to do this, we've got a movement!  Make your own, or buy one, it doesn't matter.  just get a bitcoin keyring address!

I really want these things dirt cheap. To give them away basically for free. You got to give people something physical in hands instead of paper bills to get bitcoin going RL.

The challenge as I see it is to be able to make them all unique cheap as opposed to mass-production of identical things.

Are you planning on printing the corresponding private key with the card?  Or are you thinking the Bit-Pay model where the card is tied to a hosted wallet service?

No, I did not wanted to put a private key there, only public bitcoin address. tbcoin did :) And it should not be tied to any particular wallet service, interoperateability is important.

I guess I could have worded my question a bit better.  How will you provide the private key to the purchaser of the card then?  e.g., another card, or on a piece of paper or what?  And then will it be mailed with the card, or sent electronically?

Well if you made them to order the buyer would already know the private key.

I believe the purchaser would just generate public addresses himself and keep his private key secret. All manufacturer need to know are public addresses after all.

Oh, I see.  You are going to produce these on-demand then.   That's going to be spendy.  When I read "very massive production" I figured there would be large batches of these made all at once.  Creating a handful of them, each one produced independently, are hugely different.

I had a similar idea a while back, here:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=29102.msg366672#msg366672

Here is what I ended up with, printed in stainless steel via shapeways:

http://phraust.com/photos/coin1.jpeg
http://phraust.com/photos/coin2.jpeg

It's simply a bitcoin address as a QR code on the back, with the same address encoded around the rim in a raised barcode.  The initial idea was that you could either scan it to send payment (i filled the negative space in the QR code with paint, then polished it nice and smooth), or you could "sign" a document with the rim by using a stamp pad, rolling the rim in ink, then rolling the rim on paper.

3d Metal Printing leaves a little to be desired when it comes to resolution.  The QR code works fine, but the raised barcode doesn't.  I also printed it in high-detail clear here:

http://phraust.com/photos/coin3.jpeg
http://phraust.com/photos/coin4.jpeg

The detail is much much better, but it tends to be a bit fragile on the raised barcode.

We've thrown the idea of 3D printing phone cases with a QR code on the back.  If anyone has a 3D printer and is good at modelling , let us know!

Sadly, I don't have my own 3D printer...  yet.

That clear is gorgeous, have you access to a dual-nozzle unit with which you could fill in the negative parts of the QR with black?

I might have to splurge and get one myself, and start doing these on demand.  BTC0.20 sound about a fair price?

For the steel one I just used a syringe and some black acrylic paint to fill in the qr code, worked well enough.  but yeah, if I could get a good printer that could do multiple colors...
