Maybe we will get lucky and Microsoft will not dump their coins liek the other merchants. Microsoft has a tendancy to use investments to strengthen their wealth within the company. Bill gates did it for years. I hope he passed that knowledge onto the CEO running things today.

I may have to agree ...this could be a very good thing for BTC

Microsoft is the 3rd largest company in the world (behind only Apple and Exxon) with a market cap of $391B (or, ~78 bitcoin market-caps).

Quite the legitimizing vote of confidence, even if the actual integration is not a big deal in and of itself.

I posted a link above - it's real. Gates believes Bitcoin is best suited for small amounts and micro payments. You can't buy Microsoft hardware with it yet but you can buy less expensive things like digital goods (music/movie downloads etc).

According to the wording on the Microsoft page, this is purely to convert coins to fiat in your account 'at this time' so it's another bitpay thing. Still quite nice to hear about it though. As for it affecting the price (other than sell pressure), guess that depends on whether they opt to put BTC in front of normal users as an obvious option.

Right, the importance of this is far less the actual near- (or even medium-) term demand it's likely to structurally create for bitcoin; it's about the world's 3rd largest company, with a presence on a billion devices globally, giving an even-implied endorsement of Bitcoin.

To most of us, it's obvious that Bitcoin is a better technology with world-changing potential. But most people are incapable of independently evaluating ideas and really need this sort of social-proof.

Acceptance by a huge, stodgy company with software installed on nearly every corporate desktop in the world, will be very legitimizing in many people's minds.

Yes, and that's a good thing. More people using bitcoins will result in a higher price. The more they get sold, the more they'll be bought. More demand = higher prices.

true that in speculation markets, high prices mean high demand, but now its time to use all those BTC for real!

However I for one will not use the (few) BTC that I own, I will just purchase more to spend.

Well, it actually means the price will be going down as those payment processors will be unloading more bitcoins on the market.

MS products only for sale in the US to begin with. China can stick to mining the bitcoins while the US spends them. Sounds familiar,

The next "crash" is overdue. I am waiting for it for 2 weeks now. I want to buy some cheap Bitcoins.

But seriously, keeping or instantly selling Bitcoin is not as relevant, as you might think.
Bitcoin users have now another method to spend Bitcoin, that is good news. It is really as simple as that.

Also, bear in mind that the US payment option is the BEGGINING.

Almost every company that started to accept bitcoin did this way.

Give them a few more months and it will be international!  ;D

It's only a small start. Still, a bit faster than what I expected by a few months.

Things are heating up fast.

WoW !!! I can not believe this. Does anyone know whether it is MS's own initiative or CoinBase/BitPay persuaded them ?

But seriously, keeping or instantly selling Bitcoin is not as relevant, as you might think.
Bitcoin users have now another method to spend Bitcoin, that is good news. It is really as simple as that.
I know what you mean, but this is all I ever wanted from bitcoin. I use bitcoin as money so the ability to spend is the whole show. Most businesses are not going to hold bitcoins. They are not investment companies after all, they are looking for something to replace credit cards. That is important as it becomes impossible to protect users identity and money. It is a growing liability that they want to get away from. Best of all its cheaper than taking cards.

The benefits to sellers are not discussed as much as users here. When I explain it to business leaders they are often unaware of the advantages over credit.  There should be nothing unexpected about this news. Its logical.

Microsoft does not hold any bitcoins

How do you know this?  Bitpay say half their merchants hold some of the payment as bitcoins.   Are you on the inside?

Microsoft isn't accepting Bitcoin for Microsoft product or services. Their announcement says "You can’t use Bitcoin to purchase Microsoft products and services directly at this time." They're accepting it only for the low-value things you used to have to buy "Microsoft points" for - various in-app purchases, in-game items, and such. Stuff that doesn't cost Microsoft anything, basically.

But they will be impleting it soon, and they are also going to support bitcoin not only accept it.
This is some great news!

Not directly at this time, but you can use Bitcoin now to add money to your Microsoft account, and then use your account to buy apps, games and other digital content from the Windows, Windows Phone, Xbox Games, Xbox Music and Xbox Video stores.

More than 100 articles were published today in top news media about Microsoft accepting BTC. Check http://www.cryptoreading.com/?s=microsoft . This is huge, but BTC price does not care much:( Still longterm downtrend.

True, but it does show that bitcoin has utility enough to supplement 'MS points' for purchases within their framework.  It should be a matter of time before higher end integration is implemented after they get their feet wet as it were.

No one is talking about what a major achievement this is for BitPay. I met and talked with Tony Gallippi at a conference in SF and I couldn't wish success on a nicer guy. BitPay deserves all the good things the world has to offer them. When the other "respected" members of the community were out making illegal IPOs to quickly line their pockets and destroy the reputation of Bitcoin, BitPay was busy working a long term goal of making Bitcoin a respected mainstream payment system. Hats off to BitPay for yet another incredible accomplishment.

It'd be real interesting to see what kind of traffic bitpay gets from the MS site, but I figure it can't be bad news for bitcoin either way.

Acceptance-wise this is the biggest event in Bitcoins short history. But then again, every new event seems to be the most significant event for Bitcoin :)

Tell me Microsoft is holding 10% of Bitcoins rather than an immediate conversation to fiat which adds selling pressure. Tell me that news and I'll scream it from the mountain tops.

Microsoft won't sell you an XBox, or any other Microsoft product, for Bitcoins. All they'll take Bitcoins for are the junk items you used to have to use "Microsoft Point" for. In-game items, cheap apps, that kind of thing. Stuff that doesn't cost Microsoft anything.

Absolutely. Microsoft was famously late to the internet, and that hurt them for years. But it seems, with digital currency they are determined not to make the same mistake again. Major companies care about their reputation, even above some profits. So Microsoft have done due diligence and Bitcoin has been found worthwhile for them to engage with. Lots of companies will take note and seriously consider how Bitcoin can help them. International sales to emerging markets is an obvious growth area as the existing credit card and payments systems are inefficent outside the OECD.

True enough, Microsoft seems like the biggest event so far, but I'm sure we will have something else that tops that to look forward to in 2015.
At least for now our hunger for new merchant adoption can be satisfied temporarily ^^

It has been this way for a while now, at least when additional companies start to accept bitcoin.

When you look at the headline you will probably think that potential billion dollar sales with Microsoft will be done in bitcoin but after you look at the details you will see that only it's game divisions are accepting bitcoin (as of the announcement) which make up a very small percentage of Microsoft's sales, plus you can't even buy their physical gaming systems with bitcoin

There is no reason to 'think' that the price has dropped. You can actually see the price right now.
The price drop is unrelated to this news.

All companies have to start somewhere.
Maybe the USA is a test market.
If it doesn't generate interest here, it is unlikely to generate interest elsewhere.
