Title: China block VPN service
Post by: hl5460 on January 28, 2015, 03:14:56 AM
As per tons of report and official response, China is not only blocking SNS and google. They are now implementing a GFW upgrade to kill basically all VPN service. Rumour has it that the upgrade will be completed by April this year.

Personally, I could only access bitcointalk via VPN. If that's killed too, any other options?

Did China really blocked Google ? what Search engine does chinese people use then
Anyway , I don't think that you could much if VPN's are blocked , but you can try to buy a cheap VPS and use it to connect to bitcointalk?

I'd try Tor via a bridge (https://www.torproject.org/docs/bridges.html.en).

I got an e-mail in August from FightForTheFuture.org that prodded me to install a new program called Lantern.  The subject of the e-mail was "If half the people who get this email do this, we could end censorship forever".  I don't know if it applied to / would work in China or not, but maybe it would be worth looking into.  So you don 't have to search for it and potentially find the wrong thing, the e-mail ultimately linked to getlantern.org.

Censorship is a hot topic in China now-a-days. On one hand it places china citizens in a protective bubble from such "western threats", on the other, well, no-one sane would like it. Kinda reminds me of a parent grounding the child from hanging out with some friends. This is the part in the movie where the villain is going to stomp on the main character's hands whose fingernails are digging deep into the dirt, the torso and legs pointing towards the chasm below.

It's hard to understand from the articles, are they detecting and blocking all VPN connections, or just those from certain well-known providers?

P.S. Here's some interesting discussion of other things you could try: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=7586775

They can't block all vpn service, they can only do that if they blocked all encrypted transmission. You can buy a vps that is based outside china and connect to it using a teamviewer.

What you said dosen't make sense , Why do he have VPS then connect to the VPS using TeamViewer instead of connecting Directly using Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) simply ?

To me teamviewer is more secure than remote desktop protocol. RDP is only on windows, Teamviewer is available in many platforms, like windows, mac, oracle, linux, android, ios and many others.

If you are from India, you should know that Bitcoin is banned there too . Are you from stone age? I guess not.

I am curious what the Chinese exchanges will do. 99% from their clients are from China. Their servers are outside of China. Result : NO exchanges from China, including BTC China, Ok Coin, LakeBTC, Huobi :)

The BTC price will fall because the chineses will sell their BTC  !

Really ? Show me an authentic link that says bitcoin is banned in India. We are having many interesting startups on Bitcoin. Our central bank governor indicated that Bitcoin might be the future : India's Central Bank Could One Day Use Digital Currency, Chief Says (http://www.coindesk.com/indias-central-bank-one-day-use-digital-currency-chief-says/).

There are other search engines, for example, Bing. RDP is certainly possible to use in China. Last time I went there, I used shadowsocks with AES 256 encryption on my phone. For my computer I used VPN.ac.

Tor isn't a good idea as most of the bridges would get block immediately/within a few hours.

China will ban all VPS. it is clear. The Bitcoin users from China won't be able to trade without VPS . Without trading, the chinese exchanges will close the business.

let's not forget that Russia banned bitcoin this year as well.

it will be too hard for the chinesse bitcoin traders to be online. as trader you need a very good internet connection. the "meek methods" may not be stable, fast

No, they generally cannot even block all encrypted transmissions. The fact that there are various protocols to transmit data, they likely cannot even tell when data is being transmitted in an encrypted fashion or not

call it what you want vpn tor p2p ip2 etc.. you cant block communication as it can evolve via encrypted channels to look like something it isnt.  regular encrypted channels can be used to connect to places you shouldnt be allowed to

They would just make average Joe more difficult to access outside world, the experts will always find a way as long as encrypted package can be sent

Actually the higher level officers need access to outside internet to get some insider government info which they seldom can acquire domestically

Are they really blocked all VPN service ?
Maybe they just able to block free/cheap VPN only ::)

Now, people in china are trying to search new way to access blocked website like use premium VPN/Tor Browser

Yes they blocked mostly free vpns and some popular vpn that are regularly being used in China. But still other premium vpn (http://www.bestvpnservice.com/blog/best-china-vpn) services working fine in China. This is very important to take a serious VPN provider. Not only for Chinese people which needs to bypass censorship but for all people who wants to protect their privacy.

good remark. average "Joe" won't bother to find ways to access XxX.com. he will see that it doesn't work and he will find other "games" to play in...

also, it will be very hard for the BTC traders (this is a BTC forum so it's about bitcoin) to access the exchange websites which are outside from China. What will be the result ?:)

There are loads of encryption methods, it is releatively hard for the government to decipher and block them with DPI. You can just change encryption method and continue your trade. Or even better, use ssh tunnel, they won't be blocked.

True but there are various programs to bypass the censorship, which most people in China uses. Most of the Bitcoin users are pretty techsavvy and would have some knowledge on bypassing the censorship.

bitnet vpncoin more secure for unblock website
based on Bitcoin Protocol with its decentralized feature and make it a Decentralized Virtual Private Network

What are the differences between BITNET and the traditional VPN?
A: 1. The traditional VPN network is only a closed virtual network, where people cannot see the outside world while it cannot be seen by the outside, neither. However, through this network people can see the outside world. Therefore, it is another space field (or the blessed spot, the paradise, Kunlun fairyland?) formed on the traditional Internet, in which people can see the whole outside world. But it cannot be seen by the outside world because it is invisible.
   2. Compared with the traditional VPN network, BITNET based on Bitcoin Protocol is more secure. It is more secretive about data transmission. Instead of the traditional validation method of username and password, here users are validated with the username and password dynamically generated by the block chain. As to the users, they don’t need to remember their password and username. In addition, the network applications developed in BITNET network are more secure compared with the traditional VPN because users can set the access ways freely, all of which are anonymous. Compared with the traditional VPN network, it is an anonymous and invisible network.

good luck and happy browsing  :D :D :D

They don't block vpn sites by decrypting the connection. They block them by blacklisting known vpn servers, which include paid-for VPNs.

The situation between China and North Korean is quite different, Although China isn't total free,China is still a freedom country.
