They are trying to involve MK in the case by some technical analysis and hence asking for Andreas's support.

Andreas is summoned for Ulbrich's defense? I don't think it's a good idea. I am not certain Ulbrich is innocent or guilty, but Andreas working against the prosecution will put Andreas in an awkard position.

Too soon for popcorn, it hasn't been agreed yet.

On the side note, it seems to be nice niche for 'bitcoin experts'. There are bitcoin scams/thefts/extortions all over the world, most of law enforcers/prosecutors will struggle to find relevant expertise.

Why is that? He was invited only as an expert on Bitcoin, all they want is his knowledge of the subject.

And I'm guessing Andreas must have agreed before the defense made a formal request. Or maybe they just tried to drag him in to get some publicity?

He was summoned by the defense, but he's simply being asked to explain Bitcoin. So far the prosecution have been talking about "the dark web" and drugs and murder-for-hire and trying to make Ulbricht look guilty because he has lots of this "evil" Bitcoin currency. I guess they are going to ask Andreas about Bitcoin in general, it's legitimate uses and how early adopters, such as Ross, have made lots of money due to it's rapid increase in value. He will probably also explain how the Silk Road tumbler and MtGox hot wallet were very closely connected, with many withdrawals from MtGox being SR tainted coins and many SR withdrawals being tainted with MtGox's hot wallet. Also he will likely explain how 13% of all Bitcoin addresses are tainted with Silk Road coins and why simply finding tainted coins on his machine probably isn't evidence as it's likely most Bitcoin users have some small amount of SR tainted coins even if they have never visited SR.

Awkard because the defense is going to steer Andrea's expertise on the subject to prove Ulbrich is innocent and Andrea sometimes work with the government on bitcoin legislations. So, he is conflicted to whether he should appear in court.

Yes, if Andrea remains objective and professional. He should be fine.

I agree with the motion.

Quote
Presumably, the defense plans to elicit testimony from Mr. Antonopoulos that Bitcoin has a legitimate origin and legitimate purposes and uses. However, neither point is in dispute here. None of the Government’s witnesses have testified to the effect that Bitcoin is inherently  illegitimate; indeed, both Special Agent DerYeghiayan and former Special Agent Yum specifically testified, on direct, that using Bitcoins is not illegal in and of itself.  And to be clear, is there anything illegal in and of itself about using bitcoins? A. No, there is not.   Bitcoin is relevant to the case only because it was the sole means of payment on Silk Road and because it was used to launder illegal proceeds from the site. How Bitcoin may be used in other contexts, or what uses it may have been originally conceived for, are simply not at issue here. Moreover, allowing such testimony could confuse the jury into believing that “Bitcoin” is somehow “on trial” in this case and that “expert” testimony concerning its legitimacy somehow cuts against the defendant’s guilt.

Interesting. Andreas Antonopoulos is truly amazing in explaining and educating anything related to Bitcoin.
But where to download the trial video, or if it will be open to the public?

Andreas can give valueble inputs regarding this.

Close all the loopholes with expert advice, to bring this thing to a end. Some countries have no clue about the technology and people will walk free on technicalities.

These people did a lot of harm, and need to pay for that.   ;)

I think, that is a the key here. The Prosecution had their own "expert", who did an analyzes, that the SR coins are in Ross' wallet. I (and most certainly most people, who have some knowledge) doubted, that such an analyzes is significant, but I don't think, the jury would understand that, without someone who is widely accepted as an expert and a serious businessman telling them so.

Well, it seems as though they decided against it. They are saying, he is no expert on the subject.  >:(

If he is not the expert, who is? Gavin.......

Oh well... compared to what they know about Bitcoin, he should be viewed as a expert. It might be that they just could not handle him in court.  ;D ;D ;D

This should be a slap in the face of Canada. {They thought he was a expert, and invited him to talk about it in parliment}
