Title: DayZ Bitcoin group anyone?
Post by: proudhon on July 25, 2012, 06:32:21 AM
Just started playing this ARMAII mod.  It's pretty fun if you're into realism.  Anyone else playing this?  Wanna start a group?

C'mon, nobody wants to try to survive in 225 square km of mostly wilderness intermixed with zombie infested towns and deadly PvP bandits?  Maybe we could even become like the virtual version of the Armory and scavenge for rare military equipment and sell it.

Oh shit, started playing yesterday.
I'm in Europe.
Would be nice to play with you, I feel so alone in that big scary island.
Let's make a Bitcoin bandit guild.

Cool.  I might be able to play some tonight.  I'm on the East Coast US, but I've played some on Euro servers and it's been fine.  Right now I've got a pretty good thing going in Berezino (http://dayzdb.com/map#5.121.058).  I've mostly been sticking to the circled area because there's good access to a lot of supplies in that area.  There's a hospital, supermarket, and a hotel within a relatively small area.  It's a bit of a pain in the ass to get into town because there are a lot of zombies walking around, but once you're in you can navigate around relatively easily.

http://i46.tinypic.com/r75dnq.png

Berezino is nice because it's one of the bigger cities, but most people seem to stay further south and west.  I've been there for a couple days now and haven't seen a single survivor across several different fairly populated (20-50 people) servers.  I think it's a good place to build up your stash of supplies without the risk of getting shot or robbed.  Also, there's a small abandoned military camp nearby that might afford an opportunity to get some nice military grade weapons, but I haven't checked it out yet.

Also, I've noticed more hacking going on in more populated servers, so I think it's best to stick to servers with no more than 30 people.  Let me know if you want to come North to Berezino.  If so, I'll meet you half way.  I've got plenty of supplies, and can even treat severe blood loss and broken bones.  When I've started over I always seem to spawn along the coast in this area (http://dayzdb.com/map#3.105.116), and I basically moved in a straight line to Berezino.  I mostly avoided towns along my way.

Tried it for the first time over last weekend.  Even in it's alpha state it was a ton of fun.

Count me in.  If a Skype group or something else gets started up PM me for details to add me.  Hoping I'll have some time to get on again this weekend.

I've never done anything like this before.  This the first online game I've played in quite a long time, and I'm not sure what the best way to organize this is.  There's in-game direct voice comm, but you have to be in "ear" shot to hear voice chat or see text.  There's a group channel in-game, but I don't think it works yet.  Can you do free international voice chat with Skype?  I guess we could organize meetups through Skype groups through regular text chat and use something else for voice in-game for when we're spread out.  I don't know, I'm just thinking out loud.  Hopefully radios get added to DayZ soon.

I've got some time to kill so I'm going to get in the game and start making my way to the airfield in the North West corner.

So if you want in either add me on skype (terragubben) or pm me your skype information.

Not sure the best way either.  Currently I don't have a headset for voice since I've got my computer hooked up through my TV with HDMI (if necessary I can grab some USB extenders for headset though).

Don't use Skype much either, I'm assuming there is a way to create a "group" though?  Maybe just keep it text where when someone logs on they announce their in game name and server so we can at least all play in one spot and work together if we find each other?

I suppose we could also just do the same thing with this thread instead as well if it's easier.

At work right now otherwise I'd hop on and do the same, good luck!

I gotta get back to work.  I spent an hour getting to the airfield and while I was crawling through some grass some asshole killed me.  I have no idea where he was, but the shots sounded pretty close.  I had a ton a good stuff.  Oh well, I'll start again tomorrow.

Damn, if someone wants to meet with me. I'm north of Cherno ( biggest city).
Then we can connect to same server.

I'll make my way to that area in a few hours, gotta finish work.

Edit:  My new goal is to get a water bottle, matches, hatchet, and hunting knife so that I can make it in the wilderness on animal meat.  That way I won't need to make runs into town for canned food.  Animal meat also has the advantage of restoring blood more quickly than other foods, so it'll take the place of carrying around blood transfusion supplies.  Though, I still need to scrounge together some morphine for broken bones.  Can't wait to get back in...

I'm in for a group.
We could meet on a public Teamspeak server for start. Like this one for example http://www.ts3-servers.com/public-teamspeak-3 (http://www.ts3-servers.com/public-teamspeak-3) Channel: BTCArmy :)
It would be nice to get together and start let's say mercenary group, IE, if somebody wants us to crush a bandit or any other group, they could hire us, and pay us BTC for our service.

Or we could set up a market and sell meds, weapons and the rest of the loot, for BTC.
Hell, BTC would be a perfect fit for such a game, ingame, on so many levels. Had a halfbaked idea for that a while ago, but haven't made a progress.
Imagine killing someone walking around with some BTC in his backpack :) , ideas just keep popping.

Fuck... I just killed 3 survivors thinking they were bandits but when I approached to their bodies I found out they didn't even have weapons. :( Feels bad

I got some grilled meat, lots of soda and a spare water bottle if anyone needs. Also a spare shotgun.

That's exactly what I've been thinking.  I think it'd be awesome to be hired guns.  The first order of business should be to build up a nice supply of weapons and supplies as covertly as possible.  We should all get together on low traffic servers and collect as much as we can.

I'll join up.  I was thinking of ways bitcoin could be used in game for trading loot!

I may not be able to join until after Def Con.

Everyone new to Arma II should consider getting the training in the Operations United clan at unitedoperations.net the training will pay off in your survivability.

Awesome.  Danijel Habek and I are going to try to meet up in the game.  We're both in right now, but about 15-20 minutes hike apart.

I think the plan is to head to Berezino and make a more permanent camp there.

Title: Re: DayZ Bitcoin group anyone?
Post by: proudhon on July 26, 2012, 07:36:35 PM
Ok good luck but realize your opsec is destroyed, anyone googling for dayz camp sites will be able to zero in on your location and hit you with everything they got.  Note how in youtube videos of dayz everyone masks grid and location names in the videos.  ;D

Maybe.  But there are lots of servers and lots of places to hide.  As soon as I can find a hatchet I'm going to camp out in the woods somewhere.  I've got a couple refillable water bottles, a hunting knife, medical supplies, and an AK with plenty of ammo.  I just need that damn hatchet.

Edit:  I'll probably play some more tonight around 11pm EST.  I'm back in Berezino, by the way.

Edit 2:  Danijel Habek, if you want, we could meet up at the North West Airfield.  I don't know how far you've made if from Kamenka, yet.  Let me know.  Finally, if anyone finds some antibiotics, let me know.  I've got some disease that won't let me restore my blood past 6000.

Fuck guys, I'm feeling really alone here in Cherno.
I've already killed 3 bandits, I don't know if I will survive longer...

I got some cooked meat and lots of soda so it would be nice to meet with some friendly survivor for once.

You should try to hook up with Danijel.  When we were on TeamSpeak he had spawned in Kamenka and was planning on making his way up to Berezino.  If you want, we could meet in Stary Sobor.  Looks like it's a good half way point.  If we hook up there, it might be worthwhile to loot the North West Airfield for military weapons.  This AK is nice, but I'd like to get my hands on a sniper rifle or some other scoped weapon.

Heh, got a good run across almost the whole map today, chased by zombies multiple times without any weapon, evaded gunshots, got pretty banged up, infected, then starved to death...will spawn again tomorrow and try to make it to Stary Sobor and camp around it so once we get together we can hop on the same server and finally meet eachother.

Maybe we should appoint the time when we try to ride together so we don't have to chase eachother on the forum?

Also good point on united operations courses, I've just passed fireteam operations, after doing basic familiarization course.

I dreamed of an ingame bitcoin terminal/wallet, considering ArmA has open source scripting for someone with knowledge that wouldn't be much trouble to do. Maybe would be a good idea to present it to the DayZ developers.
I'd put a bounty on some bandit heads by now...

Tough day.  I spent some time in Berezino and finally found a hatchet in a barn to the East.  After that I made my way back to the Berezino hospital and finally was lucky enough to find some antibiotics.  With my infection under control I grabbed some morphine, a blood bag, and an epi-pen and headed into the mountains to the South.  I got a fire going and cooked up the meat I got off a cow I shot this morning.  With my health restored I started heading West along a ridge line and, to my surprise, found a fully working tractor tucked away in some trees.  Obviously somebody had fixed it up and hid it there and there was a fair amount of loot inside it too.

With my binocs I spotted a gas station about a km to the West and started heading toward it.  I was driving it through an open field and was getting a little too close to some buildings (and zombies) for my comfort so I tried to drive it in the woods and ran into a tree.  I was ejected from the tractor (lol, seriously, ejected) and was knocked unconscious for, no joke, about 10 minutes.  I'm lucky to have nearly completely restored my health just 10 minutes before finding the tractor because the accident took my blood level down to 3000.  Luckily I had 4 more cooked meats and a couple cans of beans and got my blood level back up above 6000.  Even after eating all that food my screen was still blurry (concussion, maybe), but it went away after taking some painkillers.

Anyway, I'll continue to make my way to Stary tonight.  I may even keep going to the airfield and check things out.  I really want to get a sniper rifle.  This time I'm gonna pick a high spot off in the distance and watch the area with my binocs for a few minutes.  Last time I went to the airfield somebody took me out because I rushed in to quickly and didn't take enough care as I moved around.

Danijel, If you end up spawning further east this time, let me know.  I'm happy to go back that way.   I'm well stocked now and I have everything I need to survive in the wilderness, so I don't feel the need to stick to any particular area (i.e. places with hospitals and supermarkets).

BTW, on my way up from Elektro to Berezino I ended up accidentally running into Rog Por (I like to stick to ridge lines when I'm on the move).  Check it out on the map, just North East of Elektro.  There was a ton of good shit there.  I got an AK and lots of amma and a bunch of other stuff (a compass, food, etc).  It's a tough area to get into and out of as it's surrounded by trees so you can't easily spot the zombies.  I spotted some external stairs going up one of the large castle-like structures and just made a beeline for the stairs in an all out sprint.  The zombies quickly came after me but were slowed down by the stairs and from the top I was able to easily take them all out.  Anyway, the area doesn't look like much on the map, but if you're in the South East and intent to go North, I think it's worth checking out.

You missed the Steam sale, eh?  I picked up ARMAII plus the expansion for $17 during the summer sale.

Update:  I'm at the NWA.  I've now got an M14 AIM (M14 EP1), an AKM, and an M1911.  I looted the NWA at night.  It was scary as hell, but I think it was safer than trying to do it during the day.  I think I'll hang around here a while longer on the hope that I can find a pair of night vision goggles.  Once I find a pair I'm heading back into the woods.

Let me know if any of you guys need help.  I've got loads of ammo, a couple morphines, and a blood bag.

Not sure, as I'm hopping from server to server depending on the time zone, ping and number of players.
If you have a plan to monetize it it could be good for you, I think there isn't much incentive yet to be at some server all the time. The United Operations community is shutting down it's DayZ server, as the community hasn't donated any funds toward their servers.

I was just planning on sponsoring it, and have a add for Gamma Bitcoin Fund or something on it and then people can donate Bitcoins to the server cost :)
The reason why you want a permanent server is once you have good weapons and survive you want to setup camp and start getting vehicles and as the vehicles and tents don't follow when you switch server you need a permanent one.

There are certain rules of what it can be named, but it will probably be something like Gamma Bitcoin Funds Server, or something similar. I am currently in contact with some server renters about setting up a server, hopefully thing will work out and we will have a server up and running in a couple of days :)

I'd throw some bitcoin toward a bitcoin community server.  Danijel, I was at the NWA while I was waiting for you to get to Stary and I got a little careless, attracted a very large zombie horde, and got backed into a corner and eaten.  It was a real bummer because I had a sniper rifle, a scoped assault rifle, a compass, watch, binocs, map, and lots of supplies.

I respawned near Elektro and decided that if I could quickly find at least a couple cans of food and couple sodas I could just run straight up to Stary, only stopping long enough to lose the horde, eat, and drink.  It didn't go well.  I thought I was going to die again, but as I was running toward a town I heard a vehicle off in the distance - it was a bus.  I ran into view of the driver and started yelling for help and the guy told me to hop on.  I was bleeding and so once we were out of range of the zombies he stopped and let me patch myself up.  Then he gave me an MK 48 Mod 0 (http://dayzdb.com/database/mk-48-mod-0), two 100 round magazines, binocs, night vision goggles, a GPS unit, a compass, a range finder, and a few other things.  Then he gave me a ride up the coast to Berezino and escorted me to the supermarket, then went back to the bus and headed back down the coast.  How awesome is that!?

I'm going to carefully make my way back to Stary.  I really don't want to lose this gear.

Lucky you! How come I never run into folks like that?
Yesterday when I've tried to get to Stary, I was walking through the forrest near Cherno, it was night, pitch black, and I was using a flashlight, then out of nowhere got fired upon from someones Makarov. I've turned off my flashlight, and went prone just to see few zombies running past me in a direction of gunshots. I was shot badly, suffered bone concussions, and in a few moments I've bleed to death.
I hope those zombies served my vengeance to the shooter on a cold plate.
Let me know when to join, I'm in the forrest between Novy and Stary.

Great news!
Now just find a nice building near Chernogorsk or Elektrozavodsk, and stick a big sign "Gamma Bitcoin Fund" there, and people will come!
Now I just need 100ish coins to invest in GBF so I can have monthly donation ready from divis.

I know.  I've been away all weekend and can't wait to get back home and start my trek from Berezino to the NWA again.  I've got a lot of work to do this work and this game might be a problem.

Awesome.  Any chance you can make it a veteran server?  Leave 3rd person on and turn crosshairs off.   ;D

Edit:  How do I connect?  I'm not seeing it through Six Launcher.

What does crosshairs do?
At the moment they are waiting for a whitelisting from the DayZ admin group so it's currently down.
I will post once it's up and running functionally :)

Turning crosshairs off makes it so that you have to use ironsights to aim.  No firing from the hip.

The only reason I don't like them is that it makes it easier to snipe because you can scan a hillside or horizon and the name will appear even if the player is behind some bushes or trees.

I actually don't know.  I don't have a map yet and I haven't been using an online one this go around.  I found a two busted ATVs atop that big mountain between Elektro and Cherno and spent the morning carelessly riding my bicycle around Cherno and Elektro looking for parts to fix one of them up (the other is still up there if you want it; the engine needs to be fixed and it needs a new tire and fuel).

After I got the one ATV working I set out to the North.  I haven't gone in a straight line.  I stopped at a couple places looking for more fuel, and I managed to find two helicopter crashes.  I've got an M1911, FN FAL, DMR, and Mk 48 Mod 0; and plenty of ammo for all of them.  I've also got lots of supplies and fuel.
