Post by: MasterCasino on February 13, 2015, 05:45:59 AM
How Long Will Bitcoin Endure? (http://bitforum.info/t/how-long-will-bitcoin-endure/270/1)

How long?
How long can it hold its price?
How long can it stand its value?
Is the end near?
Or will it just be remembered in the statue?

How long would Bitcoin last? A really short time.. I mean.. 10,000 years? When another new technology came out which can replace Bitcoin. Just like how Bitcoin would replace fiat in the next few years..

Could you give reason why would you say that? By that time, all the Bitcoin would be in circulation and mining fees will replace the block rewards, thus still providing incentive for miners to mine. But you are right, by that time, we would all be dead.

Lets hope it will stay so long. That means that it will last our whole life. That should be great anyway.

As technology, Bitcoin will prevail.

As an asset / value... that's very hard to tell. The chance is still 50% - 50%. It may fall "tomorrow" or will start rising to the sky.

While the technology is something clearly wonderful and useful and a lot of smart people have seen that and will continue to see that, the commercial value is in the hands of the crowd, which is not actually reliable.

It will be mined a lot before 2140 as the targets till now have been reached much earlier. Even then, when it is over 90% mined and block rewards are very small it is as good as totally mined.

Nobody knows how long bitcoin will last but that's the experiment we are a part of. Maybe it will collapse this year or next, or maybe it will still be running for hundreds of years. Whatever happens to bitcoin its influence will live on in new currencies or technologies that come along.

As long as the network still exists if you ask me. There are people who see intrinsic value in it because of the technology. And it's the people that form the community that hangs on to it that will make it last. Well, you can see people giving up but you also see newcomers joining.

Bitcoin price is fucking irrelevant and analysts live off predicting the future trying to be wizards.

Whats the relevant is the blockchain technology is going to be here for eons because nothing is going to hack it.

I see these kinds of posts on a regular basis, and I have to wonder whether any of the posters actually believe it, or are just trolling/pumping/dumping.

On the remote possibility that you actually believe what you're posting, let me point out that if any "analyst" could accurately predict that the price was going to go up or down, they would become very rich very quick.  The price is what the price is, and reflects the sum total of all expectations of rise/fall.

I'm a time traveler, no lie. Bitcoin lasts till 2262.
Thats the year when the Orion Colonialists destroy earth's blockchain network with CBBs. (Crypto-Breaker Bombardments).
We lost (estimated) 405 million private keys (estimated to hold 7.4 million bitcoins) in that attack.
Currently (well, back in my time), the Orion Colonialists have the only working blockchain network in this galactic sector and now control one of the four trade quadrants.
Believe it!

Until the internet is gone. There is no reason why bitcoin won't last or be around. Its value is unpredictable  but it will continue to be widely used. There was a document someone had posted on here where a gentleman suggested that bitcoin could potentially see 50 million users on the network by the end of 2015.

An imminent slump in days to come? I read that as "might be time to buy some bitcoin soon".

I've always thought that the media shit-talking about bitcoin was as much a delay tactic as anything. Until the companies and banks that rule this country they all need to make sure there is a big seat at the trough before saying it is a good thing. Same deal with medical / recreational MJ, the naysayers were simply figuring out how to invest in it and profit around the country. Who here is ready for the first chain dispensaries? Not me, cause I don't do drugs... only weed. :)

Personally, anytime btc is under or around 200 it is a buy. Then it inevitably rolls up to $250+ and at 260+ it is a sell. Short sighted, but I'm going to let btc from my mining efforts stack up. If I keep at it and stay dilligent I should be able to mine a whole coin (via pools) by August, 2015. Whoop whoop!

I don't know about the rest here but when browsing through past bitcoin posts, people has been saying that the coin is going to be dead soon and that was years ago during the slump. Fact is when we survive that long through the test of time it shows that those people were dead wrong about bitcoin.

bitcoin will exists as long as i live as i will always have the blockchain.

The blockchain won't be very useful if the miners cease and you're the only person using it. The blockchain will slowly fizzle away if something superior comes along.

Bitcoin analysts says that Bitcoin price will have an imminent slump in days to come.

Some are trolling, some are just niave, and some are just looking for any sort of clues about what will happen.

Until the internet is gone. There is no reason why bitcoin won't last or be around. Its value is unpredictable  but it will continue to be widely used. There was a document someone had posted on here where a gentleman suggested that bitcoin could potentially see 50 million users on the network by the end of 2015.

Again I think the only way bitcoin will die is if something else comes along that is far better and people will abandon bitcoin en mass.

Forever until me die  ;D ;D

How much would the fees be? They must be rather big to give enough incentive to mine...

Approximately 2141 when last fraction of bitcoin reward hits the chain... After that purely transaction fees. @ that time fees are most likely to be mandatory and Bitcoin will have much higher conversion value.

There will allways be mining the fees, and it will probably still be profitable, believing that the price should be much higher.
I doubt fees will be mandatory, because once again, if the price becomes insane, even a fraction of bitcoin for fees would be too much.
I believe bitcoin will last for a long time, but also, that it will be replaced by something better in the future, or it will itself be dramaticaly changed to be better.

No idea. Perhaps the most important factor is whether BTC is willing and able to mutate with the times. There's lots of talk of it being able to absorb any innovations that other coins might have, but technical development is stale, maybe rightly so.

I assume layers will be built on top that will allow such things. If it becomes fluid, adaptable and reactive then it could outlast us all. If the ecosystem and interfaces operate in the same manner as it does now in five years then I think it'll wither and die. No doubt there are thousand of bright minds working to change things for the better right now.

There are still people who buy and sell obsolete currency for sentimental or collection reasons, I will be one of them and thus bitcoin will likely not fail for a few generation even under the worst possible scenarios.

My expectations are much more optimistic than this however.

But its not like you can frame bitcoin to show around your friends and family, i mean u could frame a paperwallet, but someone would just scan it and take the coins :]
I believe bitcoin will last more than 10 years definetly, when most of the mining is over bitcoin will have to proove itself one more time that it stands value, but i think it allready
is enough widespread and adopted to continue momentum, and not die out like some rebel idea.

Bitcoin will be around for as long as it takes for another alt coin to surpass it with better technology, ect.
If people start using another coin more than BTC then there will be less transactions which means less fees for the miners, once that happens then BTC mining will no longer be profitable and bitcoin itself could die, i hope not.

Technically yes. But Bitcoin is strong only as long as people will be willing to use it. If they one day find another way is more efficient - bitcoin will be done for. It only exist because it is worth something for people.

Your reply really apply's more so to it actually being worth something and having a market price.
But, alas, the protocol & network exist as long as 2 people participate in it, which would be the closest to its 'bitter end'.

Even without high prices, miners can still make a profit after all the Bitcoins has been mined. There would be much more renewable energy sources available around the world and electricity would likely to become cheaper as manufaucting cost of the equipments to generate electricity would become much cheaper. Also, the efficiency of ASICs would most likely be improved.

How long can it stand its value?
Is the end near?
Or will it just be remembered in the statue?

Centuries?

How long? Quite long.
How long can it hold its price? Quite long.
How long can it stand its value? Quite long.
Is the end near? Not quite.
Or will it just be remembered in the statue? Quite a question.

Bitcoin lasts technically till at least 1 valid copy of the blockchain exists, once thats gone... its goodbye to Bitcoin forever.
Technically yes. But Bitcoin is strong only as long as people will be willing to use it. If they one day find another way is more efficient - bitcoin will be done for. It only exist because it is worth something for people.

I agree 100 % with you.
Bitcoin really was revolutionary and new in the beginning but right now we have many other similar projects on Internet.
Many of this new virtual currency will not succeed but some will become successful.
If bitcoin don't fulfill expectations of its users and some other virtual currency show more results, people will naturally replace bitcoin with something else (new virtual currency), more effective and convenient for them.

I gotta say Bitforum.info is probably the worst formatted news website for Bitcoin and Crypto.  They get their news from other sites anyways, and their community is really non-existent.

I'd rather suffer through R/Bitcoin than go there again...

How long will it last? Tbh, there are no certainties. Let's face it, if people lose interest in one thing, it could be easily forgotten by the majority of people. Bitcoin isn't an exception for that. It's true that bitcoin is an innovation that opened the eye of many people around the world. Bitcoin has its own "firsts" that may be forever recalled by humans, but there are no guarantees that it may hold value forever. The market is a rapid-changing environment. We can give a correct prediction; we can only speculate.

Not trying to be a pessimist but I think bitcoin wouldn't last longer than a thousand years or so. lol  ;D

You would need to put all the money in advance through a exchange and you already give your data to the exchange so you can be prosecuted.

Feb. 14, 2010: "I’m sure that in 20 years there will either be very large (bitcoin) transaction volume or no volume."
I hope this answers your question , this is a quote from Satoshi Nakamoto on Feb 2014 .  (5 years ago)

I have absolutely no idea how long bitcoin will last and that's what makes it exciting. It could last for years, maybe decades, or it could fizzle out or die completely or in that timeframe too.

come to think of it, its a great way around inheretance tax

Not if you die suddenly and nobody knows what your password is  ;D

How long?
The bitcoin has yet not started to get well, you cannot expect it to die before all blocks have been mined and there will still be more transaction blocks to mine , so not going down for a while

How long can it hold its price?
It will always hold a price , the price might go down or up , but there will always be a price

How long can it stand its value?
Bitcoin value depends on people who use it and we are always going to be using bitcoin, atleast i'm

Is the end near?
It was , 2012 remember  ;)

Or will it just be remembered in the statue?
It sure will be remembered in the statue but a live one

The price will probably drop for a few years. It will be a good time to accumulate, then it will rise and rise and rise. The duration will be many years, and Bitcoin will last for many more years beyond that. It will hold its own because of the inherent value that it brings. That is the important part that accounts for its longevity.

Indeed, we are on accumulation period like after 40 dollar crash in the early days. Long period of stable low price, time to stack up.

BTC will eventually be replaced I think, because deflation can be bad or good, and usually it is good when it is driven by innovation, not supply limits

LOL very original answer :)
Seriously, it's impossible to predict future of bitcoin.
For example, in the past hotmail email and msn search was the most popular on line and we was thinking that this will never change.
Now, we see that gmail and google search are the most popular online.
So, right now bitcoin is the most popular virtual currency but if someone start another virtual currency with better potential, people will naturally accept new ''great'' thing and forget bitcoin.
Let's wait and see what happens.

it's a bit clunky in its development. Very very conservative in that department if you ask me. Not enough new features compared to what others are doing. Not exactly adapting with the changing crypto environment.

My main fear is that the miners start jumping off the ship if the price goes lower.

it will last until central banks feel threatened by it. Then one or all of the following will happen:

1. government will ban it
2. central banks will buy up bitcoin, then dump it on the open market to crash the price
3. government/NSA will essentially take control of the project by coercing miners
