Title: Public relations guidelines/talking points wiki page
Post by: Mike Hearn on May 23, 2011, 08:49:10 PM
Gavin made many good points in his post on PR:

  http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=8940.0

and Josh G made another marketing/PR related point in this post here:

  http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=9475.0

It'd be a shame for such level headed ideas to disappear as new posts come into the forum, so I summed up what I thought were the key takeaways in a set of do-s and don't-s here:

  https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Public_relations

I hope I reflected the general consensus. Let me know what you think. If people like it I will link it from other places in the wiki and maybe we can sticky it in the forums.

I vote decentralized currency Instead of Internet currency - internet currency has no meaning.

Also remove "often 10%" as an example of the premium for cc payments. This simply is too high, Square is now charging a flat fee of 2.75% for card present transactions. Also remember that part of that premium comes from chargebacks which is to the advantage of the consumer.

"Bitcoin is a chance to revolutionize the financial system, making it fairer and more democratic."
While I certainly hope this is true, we really don't have the facts to back it up. Also, people's definition of "fair" varies, the term is a bit vague.

Otherwise very well written, kudos!
I really like the way Gavin is positioning the project, less hyperbole, more down to earth.

I agree with the use of decentralized currency instead of Internet currency.

Credit card fees are charged to merchants and then used to permit chargebacks, which merchants generally don't like. I don't know about the actual size of the fee, so I can't comment on that.

Do you think maybe we should break it into talking points for merchants vs consumers?

Hey Mike, great stuff. Thanks for writing that.

I hope you don't mind but I'm jumping in and changing a few things as I see fit, as per regular wiki etiquette. Feel free to revert or bring it up on the talk page at your leisure.

edit: also everyone else should do that because good stuff gets lost in the forum, wikis are better for newcomers to do their independent reading, and if it's big enough to take over the global banking system* it's big enough to put some work in on the wiki. Be like Mike.

*no imminent takeover of the banking system express or implied by this statement

I removed the 10% figure. It was given to be by someone who works in the payments business, but he was talking about card-not-present transactions. I can imagine it'd be lower for card-present.
