Title: Average Age for Bitcoin/Crypto currency users
Post by: Kprawn on February 26, 2015, 06:36:36 AM
I know most people would say.... Bitcoin is used by ALL ages.. but I would like to test the statement with a small poll.

We have seen the result of the latest http://www.reddit.com/r/millionairemakers/ ... GumMice a 16 year old and that made me think...

What % of people from the different age groups are using Crypto currencies?

1. How many children are using Bitcoin?
2. Are we unintentionaly excluding some people from adopting Bitcoin/Crypto?
3. What is the legal implications?
3. What is the ethical implications? {Minors/gambling/Ponzi schemes}
4. Do we have more young people using it, than the older generation?
5. Do older people find it too complex?
6. Who should be the target market for faster mass adoption?

We want EVERYONE to use Bitcoin/Crypto but are we approaching the correct age groups and are we explaining it in the right manner, with that in mind?

I have met 10 year old's with more creativity and drive than most 20 to 60 year old people on this forum... Who are We?

Age makes no difference.. I know... but people need to keep it in mind, when they create services or Apps or when they explain Bitcoin to newcomers.  ;)

So let's see what you think.

I should also add that I've read that China is 70% of BTC market.

So, the typical holder is a white Chinese male in his early 30's.

I wound not say 15-18 age amount much.  Just as I would say 45 plus wouldn't either.  Late late teens to like 45 max for most of the users.

I agree with OP. These are very important questions that need discussion and answering.
Some members are concerned with the 20mb cap fight currently, but there are other issues (non-protocol) that need attention as well.
BTW, I voted for 26 to 40, but I would not be surprised if we have more under 18 then we would all like to admit.

There was a research done ages ago about who are most likely to accept bitcoin. I remember it reported a bitcoin user is typically a young educated male.

Quote
1. How many children are using Bitcoin?
2. Are we unintentionaly excluding some people from adopting Bitcoin/Crypto?

I believe a lot of children are playing around with bitcoin, not necessarily using it to buy things. A small fraction of those may be using it to buy illicit goods. Bitcoin is more complex to use than credit card. It does favour the more technical people, I do not think it is too complex to the extent that it excludes people from using it.

Not gonna answer all your question. I voted for 17 to 25 years since most people I talk to on this forums sound like they were between this two ages.

Personally, i believe that 26-40 is the age group of folks who use bitcoin.

Reasons:

1) Ages 18 and below may buy some to play around with, but their resources (read pocket money / earnings) are limited.. they might purchase some to see how it looks and works though.
2) Ages 60 and above - too old and more concentrating on retirement, also fund flow is limited in this age bracket.
3) Ages from 19 - 25 have quite a few people who are willing to experiment with the new technology involved, again features a lot of people with not very deep pockets. Too early for them to think about investing, they might buy a few to have a look at how it works and gambling.
4) Ages 26-40 is my pick because these are the true investors, they are neither too young, nor too old. They are ripe for investing in Bitcoin and will also use Bitcoin in their daily life. Also, they will use Bitcoin for gambling and for purchases. They are generally financially secure at this point and could travel a bit where they would use Bitcoin.

The view expressed above may not be agreed upon by all, but this is my opinion. Also, consider that i come from a conservative 3rd world country before you judge me  ;D.

Personally i fall in the 26-40 bracket which maybe why i am biased  ;D.

Those are more geared to Bitcointalk users.... My poll is for Bitcoin users in general. {The family and friends you know, who are using it}

It also ask some questions, that compliment the poll as a discussion point. We find the average age { or a fraction of the bigger picture } and then we decide on how it impact on our decision making to market and apply our skills to improve on things. {Eg.. Killer Appz for kids... etc.}

It's always better to know your target market, and to do your research, before you blindy apply your skills.

Situations also change over time... first adoption might have been more Adults or older people... now it might be younger people.. So information is power.  ;D

Sadly people often think that the older generations seem to be uninterested or lack the knowledge to really understand bitcoin. Well, I'm one of the middle aged group right now and in another 10 to 20 years, I'll become the so-called older generation. By then, I think we can start to take off the stereotyping image that older generations are not bitcoin enthusiasts.

The problem is that people who are now 60+ spent most of their adult life without the 24/7 Internet access, let alone the Bitcoin.
That makes the things complicated, as they have no slightest incentive to learn about Bitcoin (some few individuals may do only due to curiosity), because that would mean an unnecessary complication for their everyday life.

I voted for ages 26 to 40.  Why?  Because that's where I fall under!   8)

No, seriously, it makes sense, because this is the age where you're most likely to have the income combined with the technical savvy to actually "get Bitcoin".  You're not too old to get "wallets, millibits, and hashes", and you have enough money to take financial risks before your first or second divorce or your first daughter gets married.

Makes sense! ;D

Hmm, I belong in the 17-25 bracket and I am here for the technology and the knowledge I may gain. I buy bitcoins every now and then but most of the time, I end up working for it, since I don't have a stable job yet. Good thing to see that there are plenty of young people who are interested in bitcoin.

It might be helpful to look at the ages of the prominent members of the Bitcoin community too. You have very young people like Vitalik Buterin (1995), people who are neither young nor old like Roger Ver (1980), middle aged people like Andreas Antonopoulos (1972), and older people such as the late Hal Finney (1956).

(However keep in mind that most web entrepreneurs tend to be young too.)

I've read that the most typical BTC holder is white male, early 30's.

I wonder if the early 30's figure is the mean or median age. Because there are quite a few people in their 50's, 60's, and perhaps even over who are using Bitcoin but very few people under 13. This would push up the mean age quite a bit.

Well technically that would just be a generation shift where more proficient as people start moving into those brackets naturally it is aging
So in ten to twenty years that stereotype would be reduced significantly
More of a tech generation

If you can, consider what the average age of the friends and family are that use Bitcoin, not just your own age. As I previously said.... We are trying to profile the average age.

Results sofar indicate 20's to late 30's ......going onto early 40's .... It's a bit quick to say in the poll... but my guess is, it will stay around there.  :D

I would have guessed late teens {15 to 25 years} based on what I have experienced on other forums.... {reddit.com / bitbiz.io / backed.io.....}

Great to see the results sofar, because I am also close to that group....on the bad end of it  ;)

Well, at least it shows that there are people in your age group who are into bitcoin. I believe there should be more bitcoiners around your age and I presume they should have a more stable job and career or probably more towards family oriented, and so since they all don't spend that long online, they might have missed this thread. I'm moving towards that (pretty close) hopefully I can still spend so much time, remaining as active as I am right now.

26-40 is such a large group that it must be the winner. Also if we consider the boom the internet experienced in the 90s, and that people born in the 70s and 80s who went through that boom are now in the mentioned age, everything adds up nicely.

Yes, people that grew up with the dotcom bubble and the dawn of the Internet in the 90s, have all seen this before.

We, more than the older or the younger millenials, have seen how transformative and how far along, as well as, how long it took for the Internet to mature to what it is now.

I fit into two of the age groups. Physically I'm in the oldest group, emotionally I'm in the under 17 group but I'd guess the Bitcoiner average age to be between 25-35.

Haha. I think it's probably around mid 20s. 24-27 I'm saying though kids seem to be more tech aware these days.

Dang, I am a minority.  I would be interested to see a more granular analysis of the 26-40 group.

THe most active agegroup has to be mid 20's . That what I am , and some of the other people into bitcoin I know are too.
Hopefully you can recognize your own bias in that, since ppl are likely to know ppl in their age bracket. Especially mid twenties and below, since ppl of those ages seem to focus on age/looks/etc. and thus are particularly ageist.

I am 57 and started using Bitcoin at age 54. I also use Monero, cash, cheques, credit cards, wire transfers, but not debit!.

I will start by saying that the age range most likely to embrace Bitcoin are those below the age of 30 followed by those over the age of 50 and below the age of 80. The least likely age group is between 30 and 50, possibly followed by those over the age of 80. Someone age 18 will have a far greater change of convincing his grand parents to embrace Bitcoin than his parents and may even have a better chance with his great-grandparents than with his parents. The first thing to understand is that many teenagers rebel against the values of their parents generation. To the parent this is a rebellious teenager, but to the grandparent more often than not this is payback for the teenage rebellion they endured!. Many companies marketing to the baby boomer generation understand this psychology very well.

The baby boomer generation grew up under the constant threat of nuclear annihilation, and can best be described as rebelling against the "establishment" in every conceivable way. This contrasts sharply with the generation that followed notably generation X which to a large degree rebelled against the rebels and became very pro-establishment. The 60's and early 70's were about saving the world. The 80's and 90's were about owning the world. If a 60 year old does not have a Facebook page it is not because they do not know how to create a page, it is far more likely because they do not trust Facebook with their personal information.

In payments the most significant change in the last 40 years have been the replacement of cash and bearer (cash like) instruments with accounts under the control of the "establishment". Many baby boomers react to this change more often than not with a combination of fear, distrust, and suspicion. Bitcoin and similar crypto currencies become more often than not a return to their comfort level of bearer instruments. The easiest way to introduce Bitcoin to someone over the age of 60 is to describe it as "cash that you can use on the Internet", "there is no need for PayPal", "there is not risk of identity theft"  etc, and be prepared to engage the senior in a conversation about the horrors of mass identity theft such as Target etc.

Edit: Anyone over the age of 50 who was exposed to computer technology in their teens or early 20's, their exposure was most likely  as a programmer rather than as a passive consumer of content locked down with DRM.

Thanks for posting, it's a great post and analysis of how to market towards different age groups in regards to Bitcoin.
Also agree with the historical notes people way back used to keep money under the mattress, then banking etc.
Returning them to their comfort level in the digital age is one way to present this concept in a way people would understand.

This is excellent testimony of man who is  conscious of his past, present and future. I would like to read more post like this. Some things I do not agree with. Generations, while is true that their model is generally fine I would disagree with theory that every man from generations you listed is a follower on one doctrine. I am the child of 80. and I will NEVER create account on facebook or any other social media site. Because I do not trust them. Every man is a follower of his own path.

I'm 24 myself, and all of the people I personally know that have been involved with crypto fall directly in a 22 to 32 year old age group.

Surprised to see what made most people think that users associated with BTC will only be living ~21-40 years?
Bitcoins is more of an excitement which gives you your best moments all the time, giving surprises like pumps (and of course, dumps) ;) and while you stay happy all the time, I don't think that it will limit your age to the one mentioned by many here.

I'm actually in my late thirties about to enter forties soon, so when I first heard about Bitcoin I was skeptical as most people are to anything new and different from the norm.

I heard a bit more references to it in different media reports, mostly through Silk Road 1 transacting this new form of currency called Bitcoin using a Tor Browser.  I thought to myself, man these criminals will do anything to buy drugs and weapons online....

And then year after year, this thing called Bitcoin kept sticking around.  Mt. Gox was an actual exchange moving tremendous amount of money around, and people actually could participate in it by "mining" on their personal computers at home using CPU's and GPU's.  I thought to myself, maybe there is something to this Bitcoin.

Year 6 and I've read the Whitepaper, read and watched all I could to understand Bitcoin, participated as a miner, trader, buyer and seller of goods, and have no intention of turning my back on this thing.  I've seen this all before...with the advent of the Internet in the 1990's, the advent of social media in the 2000's, and now the age of Crypto especially Bitcoin in the 2010s and beyond....

Glad I'm able to live long enough to enjoy the ride!   :)

You should change this poll to ask people what their age is. What we all think the right answer could be is irrelevant and certainly not statistically valid!

I personally got into Bitcoin (and crypto) when mtgox crashed. I had heard about BTC before but like you, i thought it was a currency mainly used by the underworld and criminals and i wanted nothing to do with it  ;D.
I also thought it was a passing fad and when mtgox crashed, i expected bitcoin to be wiped off the face of the earth!!

The resilience shown by bitcoin after the mtgox crisis made me a fan and i went into cloud mining as that was my easiest entry into the bitcoin world. Bitcoin has slowly grown on me from there and i am now an even bigger fan. I just wish for mass adoption and for people to shake off the negative energy surrounding bitcoin. I am in it for the long haul too!  ;D

The age grouping is really skewed... most of the age brackets are double of 17-25. That doesn't make sense. If it was 17-30, I'd pick that.

You should not "think" about it... you just take the average of the bitcoiners you know and give your answer. We are not looking for a statistically "correct" answer... just a broad discussion on what age group are more "active" in the Bitcoin community.

We already see a trend in most of the posts being done here.... so even if the answer is not 100% statistically correct... it might still be a indication.

Thank you for everyones inputs... it is interresting to see the results sofar.  ;D
