I just checked their website and they seem to be copper coins.

favourite slogans to be honest.

May order a 2-pack, maybe add a payment option for Bitcoin rather than having to email you? That may keep some load off you...

Thanks, everyone. Yes, they're copper. And we didn't mention it on the website, but each coin has an ultra-thin protective finish to slow the natural patina that develops on copper surfaces. (Everyone loves a shiny, new penny!) However, you can always remove the protective finish with a soft towel and a little Brasso, Maas, etc., if you want to speed up the patina process. I did that with my own lucky Bitcoin Penny, and it developed a GORGEOUS patina after a few weeks--chocolate with hints of olive. Absolutely beautiful! I'll try to snap a photo today or tomorrow.)

Thank you. I'm not a very good photographer, but I try my best. As for the slogans, I wanted something with a US penny theme, and there's only so many ways one can add a twist to the original words. That said, I kind of like the slogans.

I completely agree! We're still working on building a proper shopping cart to include direct bitcoin sales. Until it's done, we're stuck doing things manually. =/

Thank you again, everyone. And please let me know if you have any more questions or comments. We appreciate them all. =)

How much is the shipping to The Netherlands?

Shipping to the Netherlands would be only $1.99 USD via bitcoin sale (the discounted international shipping price for forum members) and only $5.99 USD through the website using PayPal (including Visa and MasterCard).

UPDATE: Our shipping policy has changed in order to offer all forum members 15% OFF the entire order.

Our shipping charge is now a flat fee of $1.99 in the Continental USA. (Sorry, Alaska and Hawaii.) And shipping to any other global destination is only $5.99!

Thank you, Possum. I'm guessing we were both inspired by US coins. We played on the penny theme for obvious reasons, with a little bit of quarter thrown in for good measure. =)

Got my order in, looking forward to seeing the product! Has been a pleasure dealing with Christopher fwiw.

Question, I like that these are identified as 2015. I presume if things go well you will have 2016, etc? How many are planned for 2015? I think if there is a cap to the number, it will add to the collectible nature and help these to sell very well...

Thank you, Chris. It's been a pleasure from my end, too. =)

You're correct. We plan on issuing a slightly different version of the Bitcoin Penny commemorative coin each year. In fact, we've considered turning it into a contest with the winner's initials on that year's coin. Who knows? That's still in the "here's a cool idea..." phase.

And we're not limiting the production quantity for the 2-packs. I think you're right, limiting the production run might add to the collectible nature and help them sell very well, but we're really not trying to make a highly collectible coin. Rather, we want a fun, inexpensive novelty bitcoin that one wouldn't mind giving away to a stranger to help spread the news about bitcoin in general. (We usually carry an extra one in our pocket for this reason.) Our Bitcoin Penny has been called "cool bitcoin swag," and I think that's in line with our vision. Sure, it would definitely be nice to sell a few more and make a few more dollars, but at this point in time we're more interested in offering a fun, inexpensive novelty bitcoin that helps spark interest in the new bitcoin technology as a whole. (All while looking quite stylish if you like to rock penny loafers!) Or for a more concrete example: "Hey, are you wearing pennies in your penny loafers? Cool!" "Close. It's not a penny, though. It's a Bitcoin Penny. Here, I have an extra one." "Cool! Bitcoin, what's that?" "I'm glad you asked..." (That's generally how it goes down.)

Please let me know if you have any other questions. I'm always happy to help.

Regards,
Christopher

Nice coins shame they wouldn't be accepted in shops. Maybe would be good if shops accepted them and some sort of hologram on them that has the coin in them and also public private key accessible for them to use or transfer value from. Would be good for a coin storage too :)

Just checking.  ;) The price for the roll (of 40 coins) is $99.99, and forum members who pay in bitcoin receive free US shipping or reduced international shipping. When you're ready, just shoot me a PM with the total order and shipping address (US or International), and I'll reply ASAP.

Great question! On our website's FAQ page, I playfully apologize to Alaska & Hawaii for having to charge them international shipping rates. However, since I forgot to mention that exception in this thread, I'm happy to include Alaska & Hawaii for USA members. =)

Thanks, cyclops! We look forward to landing a few on your doorstep.

At this time, we don't sell the capsules. While we certainly strive to mint a high quality commemorative coin, we also want this to be a fun, relatively inexpensive commemorative coin--something that you might wear in your penny loafers or carry around in your jeans pocket as a lucky coin. Something that you wouldn't mind if it gets banged around a little. (That's how lucky coins collect all that luck!)

On the other hand, perhaps we'll keep that in mind for our 2016 edition Bitcoin Penny.

Thanks again. =)

Thanks

Absolutely! I'll cut-n-paste straight from our FAQ.

Quote
Bitcoin Penny™ commemorative coins are the size of the average American’s pocket change—a little smaller than the US quarter (.900") and about the same thickness as the US nickel (.077”")—making them the perfect size to carry around comfortably in your pocket all day long, showing them off to everyone you meet!

(Go ahead. Make your friends jealous. We give you permission. Besides, that Chris is a jerk, anyway.)

Let me know if you have anymore questions. I'm always happy to help.

Christopher =)

CJB - My initials. =)

Traditionally, US coins (perhaps most world coins?) have the designer's / artist's initials somewhere on the coin. That's why we included it on the 2015 edition of our Bitcoin Penny. We like the penny theme, and it's the little details that make the difference. =)

On future editions, we may include the initials of someone else (as a contest grand prize).

Christopher

These are pretty cool looking.  My gf was thinking about getting some pennyloafers.  If she does, perhaps I'll get her some btc pennies to sport in them.

Good luck on this product!

Thank you, SirLolicon! ;D

Not as many as we'd like to have sold. ;D Seriously, though. We just launched in January, and posting here on BitcoinTalk.org in March (exactly one month ago, today) was our first real marketing of Bitcoin Penny™ commemorative coins. Until now, we've stayed pretty low key.

We're still a young company, but we're growing. (In fact, we have a new product coming out in about one week. Very exciting stuff!) We're also in negotiations with a few select retail businesses, so that's really cool. Every day is a new day full of opportunity. That's my perspective.

So, how many will you be ordering today? ;)

Christopher

Physical coin market has been slow for some time now, so low sales is what I guess all people is getting. I myself am trying to sell some coins from various vendors and everything is going slowly...

Do they serve any function or are they just nice looking keychains?  ???

Title: Re: Bitcoin Penny™ Commemorative Coins

What makes these Bitcoin penny keychains?

Well...the brand name is Bitcoin Penny™ and they're designed to look like penny loafers. That's all.

Quote
Do they serve any function or are they just nice looking keychains?

These do not store private keys or hold any bitcoin monetary value whatsoever. They're just really cool, extremely well-made, handcrafted, gentleman's keychains. ;D

Since our Bitcoin Penny™ commemorative coins were inspired by the classic American tradition of wearing pennies in penny loafers (with a fun, modern twist that celebrates the new bitcoin technology), we thought it would be awesome to create something in that honor.

Now everyone can enjoy the penny loafer tradition! ;D

Thanks for posing the questions.

Christopher

Thanks for explaining.
They do look quite nice :) What will pricing be like?

We're still discussing the final price. When I first proposed the idea, some of our team thought we should use less expensive, more generic leathers and the typical nickel-plated, base metal key rings that you'll find on mass produced novelty keychains. I pushed for only the finest materials and craftsmanship (genuine Horween leathers, polished stainless steel rings, hand-cut and hand-sewn construction, etc). I won that battle.

As one might expect, that battle came with a higher price tag. (Which we're still hammering out, but we hope to have everything finalized and on the website by this weekend.)

By the way, if you're unfamiliar with Horween Chromexcel leather...it is THE most buttery smooth / supple leather on the PLANET! Absolute pure luxury! Like cashmere, only leather. ;D

Christopher

Isn't it dangerous to lay pennies on a train track? :-\

No, not at all. According to the snopes website (as well as various online posts from train engineers/workers), it's a perfectly harmless tradition and will NOT derail a train. ;)

Mythbusters did an experiment with it too. "The train simply heated and flattened the pennies. Quoting narrator Rob Lee, The myth wasn’t Busted – it was Flattened."

I've put pennies on a track before and they were completely flattened with no design.  These bitcoin pennies must be beefy or the train that ran over my pennies was carrying a lot more weight.   ;D

It depends on ...where on the rail you put the coin....A train wheel only makes contact with a small part of the rail... to reduce friction...   if you place the coin near the point of contact ...the coin will become so flat that it will become sharp like a blade..... further away from the point of contact and the gap will increase ....and not flatten the coin as much...... I think that point of contact is near the inside edge of a rail...

The myth busting "coin flatten by a train" testing I did was with a quarter and the train was moving really slow.....
The flatten quarter is so sharp on one edge that I can open boxes with it

And I would never distroy a bitcoin penny like that...

Very odd as I did the same exact thing!  Taped them dead center with scotch tape.   :)

Here are two photos as I carry this coin around with me in my wallet and yes it is sharp like BG explained.  The train that went over this penny was a freight train and not a passenger train.

Good afternoon, folks! It's time to have more fun with another Bitcoin Penny™ Commemorative Coins auction! And this time, we're playing with a baseball theme.

First at bat was dozerz, who stepped up to the plate and smacked a HOMERUN with an opening bid of .30 BTC! :o

Who's next in the lineup? It could be YOU!

How do you play? It's simple! Any bid increase of .01 is a single, .02 is a double, .03 is a triple, and .04 is a homerun. And for those POWER HITTERS, any bid increase of 1.00 BTC or more is the big GRAND SLAM!

What numbers of the large rolls do you have left?  I wanted to win that auction yesterday, but I lost track of time.

Do you plan on doing any more auctions in the future?  I'm hitting the batting cage to get ready. :-)

We still have most of the higher number rolls (12-20) available, and I think we may have #5 and #9 available as well. (Those were reserved, but never paid. I'll check this week on the status of those.) It's the 2-Packs and Short Rolls that sell the most. In fact, we'll need to restock soon. Thanks for the reminder. ;)

Sure, we'll have another auction. (Probably a new theme too. Any suggestions?) We can start a new auction tomorrow afternoon.

Regards,
Christopher

RE: Bitcoin Penny™ Error Coins (2015)

Hello, everyone. We wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for supporting The Bitcoin Penny Company as well as share with you some information about our past / future Bitcoin Penny™ commemorative coins.

Our current stock is almost gone, so we'll be placing another order with the mint in a few days. However, the new coins will show a slight change from our current stock of 2015 coins.

The last order was supposed to be minted in the traditional "coin-turn" (back is minted upside-down) as specified in our original contract with the mint. However, due to an error at the mint, the last order was accidentally minted as "book-turn" (back side is NOT upside-down). When we received the last order a few months ago, we decided to go ahead and sell the coins without publicly addressing the error. While we prefer the original coin-turn design, we didn't see the error as particularly bad or in any way distracting from the overall beauty of our Bitcoin Penny™ commemorative coins.

At the time, our sales contact as well as the operations manager at the mint apologized for the mint error, and they assured us that all future orders will be minted correctly. We spoke with them again earlier this week regarding our upcoming reorder, and again, they assured us that they will take extra care making sure that the next order of Bitcoin Penny™ commemorative coins will have the correct coin-turn design.

Only ~ 1,000 of the 2015 Bitcoin Penny™ commemorative coins were minted with the error. (All previous orders of our 2015 coins were correct and error-free. It's only the last order that has the error.)

We understand that many of our customers are avid coin collectors who can appreciate all the little, interesting variations in the minting of a particular coin. Therefore, please feel free to consider the 2015 Bitcoin Penny™ error coin as one of those little, interesting variations.

We hope it adds enjoyment to your collection.

Thank you again for supporting The Bitcoin Penny Company. We look forward to many more years of providing the bitcoin community with affordable, high quality Bitcoin Penny™ commemorative coins. Error-free.

Regards,
Christopher

Welp time to run to the bitcoin penny set I have to check it out.  CJ you said that the last 1000 were minted this way.  What is the total 2015 mintage?

By the way if anyone hasn't bought this set, well worth it, these are nice and shiny and look great amongst the other coins.  Looking forward to 2016.

CJ you said that the last 1000 were minted this way.  What is the total 2015 mintage?

This is our first year (2015), so we've been taking it slow. Only 2,000+ Bitcoin Penny™ commemorative coins minted so far, but we're placing an order for another 1,000+ coins in a few days. That's a grand total of 3,000+. That will probably be the last order for the 2015 version, since we're releasing our new 2016 versions in early November.

However, the first 1,000 did not have the upgraded, protective finish which we prefer (only the best for our coins!), so we stopped selling those back in March. We still use those occasionally as promotional items such as geocaching trinkets or randomly dropping them in Starbucks parking lots. (Personally, I'm fond of leaving them in those countertop "LEAVE-A-PENNY / TAKE-A-PENNY change trays.) In fact, we still have a jar with almost 700 coins from the first 1,000. I've toyed with burying them somewhere, making an old fashioned pirate's treasure map, then auctioning off the treasure map in a few years. Why not? It sounds fun to me. ;D

Nice coins you got there! I might order some soon.

Do you happen to sell suitable Air-Tite capsules for them?

cyclops,

We finally got around to ordering a few of the Air-Tite capsules (with foam rings). While we don't officially offer them for sale (yet), the size you're looking for is 23mm which fits our Bitcoin Penny™ commemorative coins perfectly. :)

If you'd like for us to supply a few capsules with your next order, let me know (PM is fine). We're always happy to help.

Christopher

And now... in recognition of National Bad Poetry Day (August 18), we are resurrecting our favorite bad poem:

(Ahem!)

If you’re new to the Bitcoin Penny,
And somehow you’ve yet to buy any,
We sell them by twos,
For your penny loafer shoes,
Or by the roll if you’d like to collect MANY!

Best Regards,
Christopher (Official Poet for The Bitcoin Penny Co.)
