If this is how the idea of Bitcoin gets exposed to the world, through a negative event, then Bitcoins will be seen as a bad thing for many people and governments.

And it would open it up to further condemning and denouncing attacks by politicians.

no.  it'll be interpreted as a huge positive.  it's been made loud and clear that Bitcoins are valued.  it's an efficient, highly desired fixed supply currency that can be sent or received w/o being present in person.  try that with gold or USD's.

For its longer term success, I'd prefer it if a beneficial event did the introduction of Bitcoin to the world.

No it's not. The worst thing that can happen is a neutral effect should it turn out to be a hoax. That kind of association doesn't damage bitcoins reputation since it is not related to it's infrastructure.
I wouldn't be surprised if we hit all time highs next month, and I think everybody here agrees I am one of the most resilient bears in here.

This is definitely a negative thing, although it will more than likely cause a short term bubble it will wake politicians up to the fact there's an online currency that makes all the worlds banks NYC policies redundant.

The nature of this scam will highlight just how dangerous to a government that can be.

This is actually a decent point....bitcoins could be used to make/take illegal campaign contributions on the down low.  That said, I think btcs instability would help to curb that.

To be honest, I'm sure all kinds of blackmail threats are made towards candidates every election year.  What's notable about this one - hoax or not - is that it became public.

From Reddit :

Quote
The reason it's a hoax, and not even an elaborate one at that, is that Page 1 makes zero sense.

First - you remember all those hedge fund income statements we saw? All that income flows to Line 17. It is essentially impossible that this is a flat $50,000. Whoever created this did it poorly. Line 12, Business Income, is for my consulting business, or my speaking engagements, or my flower store, or my interior design business.

Even more obvious is that Line 12 would almost without a doubt be subject to self-employment tax. That would be about 2.6 million dollars.

You see how line 28 has nothing on it? That should be 50% of the self-employment tax shown on page 2, which we don't see. So in short, the income is on the wrong line and even if it were right, there is no corresponding deduction for the self-employment tax.

The end.

Mitt Romney did this himself, and he has secretly been investing in bitcoins the past few months. His plan all along was to make a big deal out of not sharing his tax returns so everybody would notice when they were "stolen". Then suddenly everybody finds out about bitcoins, the price spikes as people rush into this wonderful new currency, and he sells his massive bitcoin holdings at a hefty profit. Then he can retire, if he doesn't get elected president.

Ok, now I am going to take off the tin-foil hat and go back to normal.

why is everybody making such an overblown story from that? anyone with a brain can figure out the following things: (crosspost from g+)

just by skimming the text at http://pastebin.com/1j1yzQ9S , i think of the following indications why its a hoax:

1 - anyone could have written this text on pastebin. there is zero proof  somone got their hands on any document at PwC

2 - the way the document is written is in a very emotional way and trys to provoke back and forth.

3 - it would be much more effective to privately contact romney/PwC for extortion. if they would pay the way described it would be a gigantic media blowout against romney so they have no choice as to ignore it or try to settle without bitcoin (anyone can observe what is paid on the given address)

4 - the payment instructions are somewhat ambigously defined, if it was real i would expect a round bitcoin amount.

5 - if real, they would have provided some real proof and details, like document ids, filenames, paths, or some details from the documents.

6 -if he is trying to show his insight into internal PwC ongoings, why is he quoting the receptionist number? i would reference the phone extension closest to the original physical storage location of the documents (either IT or a specialist department)

7- the last two lines which should appear as some sort of "proof" are deliberatly chosen to make fun of his momonism (is that the P.C. term?) again, just provoking.

This is actually a decent point....bitcoins could be used to make/take illegal campaign contributions on the down low.  That said, I think btcs instability would help to curb that.
You can bet that plenty of elected officials would love to be able to accept dirty money without risking the embarassment of having their freezer full of cash (http://articles.cnn.com/2006-05-21/politics/jefferson.search_1_congressman-jefferson-jefferson-aide-fbi-agents?_s=PM:POLITICS) discovered.

I'm not so sure that would be a more effective way to receive the money. Your point makes me think the alleged hacker might be counting on media attention to get free money. Apparently the "release" address already has over $10 donated.

With enough press this story could feed on itself as people start donating to either of the bitcoin addresses and the media covers that, then what bitcoin is, etc.

This is potentially explosive for Bitcoin, hoax or not.

I doubt this is about anyone trying to get money or BTC.  People have been looking for a way to get Bitcoin mainstream media coverage outside of the finance and technology sections and what better way to do it than to tie Bitcoin to the Presidential campaign in some way.  Mr and Mrs average America might never read the finance and technology sections of even the most mainstream media, but they're probably reading the current political coverage and this is the kind of story which might even hit the TV news bulletins.

This is probably going to blow up in the face of whoever pulled the stunt, but it's been effective in drawing mainstream attention to Bitcoin.  Whether that's a good thing remains to be seen.

Update from The Wall Street Journal (http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2012/09/05/fbi-secret-service-deepen-romney-tax-mystery/).

Quote
"In separate phone interviews, an executive director of the Republican Party ... and a chairman of the county’s Democratic Party, described receiving virtually identical packages that were dropped off at their party offices late Thursday or early Friday morning when no one was around.

In both cases, the hand-delivered, manila, padded envelopes with no postage contained a note, a SanDisk thumb drive, and featuring some kind of copied version of Mitt Romney signature."

actually i do.  if it was a hoax why go thru the risk of dropping off 2 packages that could have fingerprints or being seen on surveillance cameras.

as for contacting them privately, he risks being wire tapped or having his ip address tracked.  also by publicizing the alternate address he gains a different possible avenue for getting paid.

From the end of the CNN article (http://edition.cnn.com/2012/09/06/politics/romney-tax-threat/index.html):

Quote
Jeff Garzik, listed on the Bitcoin website as part of its development team, told CNN the "consensus among the Bitcoin chattering class appears to be that this is a hoax." He cited an online forum in which many users express that view.

The currency is traceable, even if users go by pseudonyms, Garzik said. Every transaction is stored in a "block chain," which he compares to "a public ledger."

"It seems unlikely that thieves would make so public a heist, with law enforcement so likely to watch the block chain and associated Bitcoin exchanges," he said.

"Bitcoin" is actually mentioned quite a bit in that article...

Yeah, and especially because the couple sentences summarizing bitcoin were actually accurate, for once. And I *love* that they even noted that various merchants accept it:

Quote
Bitcoin is a digital currency not overseen by any government or bank. Various merchants accept the currency for goods and services.

Click the "load more comments" button at the bottom a bunch of times and then search the page for "bitcoin". There are a bunch of mentions in the comments, though unfortunately, most are pretty ignorant and stupid.

I notice that Pastebin has not taken down the ransom notices. Hmm, I wonder why. Could it be that they are getting a massive number of hits off those notices? Perhaps the ransomer should be receiving profit sharing on the ad revenue. :D

It would be insanely stupid to publicly say that ransoms paid in BTC could never be traced.  It's also technically untrue.  The BTC can be traced - they don't ever disappear from the blockchain.  It's tying them to real world transactions and identities which can be difficult.  Just as delivery creates a point of vulnerability in the SR system, exchanging large amounts of BTC for cash or stuff also creates a vulnerability in illicit BTC transactions.

If someone knows what they are doing, it would be near impossible to tie the coins to a person or physical location. First you tumble the coins through certain pooled accounts on Bitcoin based sites. Then, you sell the coins locally for cash, a small amount at a time. Granted, doing this with $1 million worth of coins is going to be a bit more challenging, but time would be be on the side of the 'hacker'. They could do it over weeks, months, years.

Yes but you would need big pooled account hidden as tor services or equivalent. If you do it with known pooled accounts, pretty sure SS will give them a visit quite fast.

Silk Road is pretty big and I don't think they will be visiting Silk Road because they can't find where it is physically located. Put the coins in Silk Road, pull them back out little by little. You will blend in with all the other small time drug dealers operating on there.

Agreed, that's the biggest pooled account operating as a tor service (that I know of).
Though to be correct, they theoretically could locate it, but they would need to control a big part of the tor network (please someone correct me if I'm wrong)

Felony blackmail threats against a presidential candidate are a little bigger than a mere marketing campaign.

Somebody went and hand delivered packages to office buildings, at the risk of leaving being identified due to residual DNA/fingerprints as well as possibly being captured on a surveilance camera. To do something that risky for a prank would be incredibly idiotic.

Then again people gave Pirate their money so I suppose anything's possible.
