Title: I placed my 4 s3+ outside
Post by: droizs on May 28, 2015, 08:09:03 PM
Here in Portugal, the hot is coming out strong so now and I can't place the miners inside my house.

So I put them outside where they are covered below one balcony and where the sun and rain never hits.

I think this solution is even better because its more fresh and ventilated outside than indoors.

Now in cold weathers I will place them inside to heat the room and in hotter weathers i will put them outside.

Do you think its safe? There is any danger to the miner's/PSU's that I might possibly missed?

what about some dust from street, insect, humidity and other factors which may happen?.) imho it is not good idea at all..

As others mentioned dust can be a real problem.  It will build up from making it through fan and build up all over.

It can cause a ugly buildup and depending on how long and bad it's possible to hurt exhaust enough to actually hurt your miner.

Dust, theives and other concerns but I would definitely make a makeshift cover out of maybe a plastic tub with large areas for air to leave but maybe disguise the units a bit more.

A plastic cover isn't going to keep the dust out, but it will keep the heat in.  The only way to stop dust is with air filtration, and it's pretty hard to filter all of the air outside.

I would if I had the option but I live out in the wild...
Too many animals would fuck around with my miners, chew on wires, fry themselves to death, frying my entire grid.
Sounds like a lot could go wrong if not enclosed somehow.
I'd also recommend to put a filter in front of your intake fan...
Typically, I recommend women's stockings because they're cheap , widely available and work as a filter in 99% of applications.
That's what I use for in my water pumps for gold mining... cleaning them's a stitch too.

As for an enclosure, unless your area is prone to crime or gamer wildlife, then something like a doggie kennel should work keeping most by-passers out.
Also don't be an idiot and watch out your power line... power and water don't mix; good way to kill a miner instantly.... you might survive.
However, in any case... Always Safety First!

It would need to be a dust tight seal at the bottom, too, can't just place it upside down resting on the ground.  And then you've have to evacuate the heat from the tub, as well.

easy fixable with a mosquito net, that can maybe be enough strong to protect from others pesky stuff as well, still the rain is a problem if there is a strong wind

As long as no one can get to them you may be okay as long as you are not near the coast.

Very high humidity might be an issue over time.

They will not cause condensation cause they will always be warm.

Try blowing them out with an air compressor every month or so to keep dust under control.

to hell with mining.  it would have taken me like 22 years to get 0.5 btc with my S3's and S1, but i sold them on ebay and got the money immediately.  i mean what gives dude.

why the hell are u mining.  to give me money?  or to waste electricity or what?

Thank you all for the suggestions it really helped me.

Today I put them inside a cabinet, removed some drawers and made some holes in the back of the cabinet.

I think this will work.. Now for the dust and insects I will try use glass socks (or whatever they call them in English) they are kinda of transparent socks and I think they will do the work better than any air filter.

Regarding the humidity I think will not be a problem since I don't live near coast + the miners are more protected now and the weather conditions are just ok.

22 years to mine 0.5btc?? what calculations are you doing?

To give you money? what do you mean by that?

I'm mining just to gather as much bitcoins as i can because i believe that in a near future the exchange rate will raise and then I will make my ROI. And ofc not paying electricity is a BIG help ;)

I start mining in 10/2014 and I already have more than 4btc...

22 years is impossible. The gear would be obsolete in a few years.  So I'm unsure how he came up with this math.  Add difficulty change and miner gear getting out of date.  Even 2-3 years is longer then it will run chances are.

You need decent electricity pricing.  If you have high electricity you are going to lose that is true.  But it is not a one size fit's all.  Some will profit some will not.  All depends on your specific situation.

Also from earlier conversations here is a example of someone using windows to exhaust heat outside and have miners running inside - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=766998.msg11476707#msg11476707

I will not install fans in the windows glass or leave my windows always open to exhaust heat... that isn't very common or practical where i live.

Then that idea will not work for you. You would need a way to exhaust through window or other ways on heat.

If your truly running them outside look inside of one of the miners in a week or two and I think you will see the build up and why so many suggest not mining with miner open to elements outdoors.

Honestly just leave them outside and check the weather from time to time to make sure it will not rain.

The S3 and the PSU aren't worth that much to begin with.

You are better off leaving them outside then leaving them indoors turned off - which makes no money what so ever.

Every month that goes by is a huge risk of difficulty going higher or price going lower. Make the money now while you still can.

My 2 cents

U need to be able to put them outside where they are secure from thieves, rain & dust.

These are ur major factors.

Whatever miners ur running will need some sort of container to go around your miner which follows the same type of setup as ur miner.

So ur box ur miner sits in should have air vents on either end where ur fans are to allow air thru & should also have some sort of air filter to stop any dust getting into ur miners. (Nothing should impead airflow)

Your cover box should also keep any rain off ur miners & power supplys, If possible to mount ur containers using a security bolt of some unusual type so that thieves wont come & lift ur miners.. ( When u do this, Think about noise, Cause noise to anyone around u will attract attention which in turn could attract thieves)

Follow the ideas here & u should be right...

I've bought a few used S3's that have been buggered up thick with cigarette smoke, pet dander, and household dust.  I couldn't image that the outdoors would have been worse for these S3s.  It took some time with an air compressor to get that gunk out and I can still smell the cigarette residue coming out of these S3's exhaust.

the same happend to me with my two old g-blade, they were full of dust and there was that annoying smell of burnt, like something, as if something inside it was burned

i guess, seeing how they practically they give them for free(price is ridiculous low), they don't bother cleaning it

Put pantyhose over the air intake and clean it daily, dust problem = solved.

Anyway, isn't selling those miner on ebay is even better then running them with all those risk? Probably get a lot more back then the miner can mine for the whole life.

IMO the point of mining is to further decenterlize the network and MOST IMPORTANTLY give you a "voice" of where bitcoin is headed.

To remove the dust you can use small air compressor one time at week.

I believe it would be much easier to buy some air filter sponge or sheet to reduce the dust. Just make sure it doesn't reduce the fan pressure too much.

I don't think dust is a real problem, but if it rains in portugal there will be very much water in the air because it will vaporize if it hits the hot ground. Dust can be easily removed with compressed air but if there is some corrosion the you can throw your miner in the bin.

this is the problem, this kind of dust is smo small that you need a filter with very tiny holes like a colander for rice, high chances that something  like this will limit the cfm

he can add another fun near the exit of the tube, for directing the dust to another direction, could be a possibility

With all the filters added you can simply place it inside without filters and will get better temps ;)

Get a scented candle and burn it for a while every now so the smell goes thru the miner.

U should find that it will slowly remove the smoke smell..

I used to get the same thing with used pc's..

You can build an a net around it to get good ventilation. You could use one of those anti-dust nets used in construction for protecting scaffolds. They're pretty cheap too.

Why can't you have it inside...?

As we all have insane electricity bills already, I bought an Air Conditioning machine to my mining room. Works great with the window a little open; at the winter I turn it off and leaving the door to the room open and use it to heat the house :)

I ran my zeus scrypt miners outside for months last summer...never had a single problem (they were sitting outside underneath my roofed porch)...they made way to much noise to attract any animals and my house is pretty isolated so no issues from thieves.  Had some dust buildup but thats about it...survived through heat, torrential downpours, etc.

Miners are rather simple devices, as long as the cooling is not clogged and water does not directly touch the components they'll be fine.

i don't know some time if you leave the dust to accumulate too much, that thing become like sticky send, it could impact the circuit nonetheless, if PCB tracks, are covered too much , the connections between the chips will be reduced

so dust need to be removed before it become that thing, i usually remove it every month at max to prevent that

Good thought.  I've got two portable A/C units in my miner room and I was only focused on the cost of cooling in the summer without offsetting this cost with the savings I get in the winter due to lower heating bills.  My home is all electric - no natural gas - so winter heating costs are about the same as summer cooling.

I highly suggest trying to use fan's.   Compare AC to fan's and a exhaust you will save money.    In my new summer area I am using fan's to push fresh air in, then luckily since area put in a great gable fan to exhaust it + some attic vents.

If your lucky you can use evaporation AC.  But it's based on weather if these work in your area effective.  So i was not lucky enough with this.  So using fan's and it's been a great summer.

I have been fine tuning it need to document end result.   But to show the fan's here is examples in my thread - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1020826.0 .

How feel is your AntMiners now?

It already past more than 1 month and I still didn't installed any air filter or did any clean up.
The miners have some dust deposited on top of the shell  and some dead insects near. It did rain 2/3 days but the miners were well protected from it and they are OK.
The temps now are between 45Cº and 50 Cº.
I'm waiting for the arrival of a new PSU to open and clean them all, and after putting them again in the wardrobe I will install the air-filter.
