Edit - It was know to me that the auction threads are also editable but only for the OP so, the main reason for asking this only to inform all the community members that auction threads are also editable.

I also like the discussion on its existence either it is right or wrong.

No you can't. It's to prevent users from editing terms and bids without the public eye knowing. However, you can lock an auction thread.

and ironically move it into a section where you can edit it, you might even be able to move it back. Which would make the whole "cant edit here" setting useless. IIRC "TheGambler" moved auction threads into e.g. tech support and heavily changed the thread to make it look like a legit tech support question.

created in auction, moved to off topic, waited 10 minutes to make sure the edited message shows, edited, moved back into auction.

With that example it is obvious that the OP was edited. What would be more concerning would be if someone were to create an auction thread, then in the middle of the auction, clarify some term or add some feature to what is being sold in a subsequent post, move the thread, remove the subsequent post, then move the thread back. It would be very difficult to tell that this happened

Indeed. I have moved topic to Digital Goods once and I saw the 'Edit' button. What hilariousandco said is valid point but IMHO if edit is disabled in Auctions, then move topic should also be. Disabling edit without disabling move topic doesn't make sense or I think edit should be disabled for all the topic created in Auctions even after it is to another board but I don't know if this is possible in SMF.

It was meant as an example. If Shorena edit topic before ~10 minutes, the dotted line won't appear and we won't know whether it is edited or not. Shorena edited after ~10 minutes most probably to show it can be edited after moving topic.

Yes, you basically have 10 minutes on any post to change it without obvious hints. Staff might be able to see that the thread was moved, but users would not. In my example I deliberately did not create a redirection thread to make this as silent as possible (and obviously keep the spam this produces at a minimum).

Im not entirely sure this can be misused though. You would need to make someone place a bet quickly and only change the post a little bit to make it plausible that the user betting did misread the post.

But you also cannot delete posts in the auction sub either. An opportunity for abuse would be to do this:

Then after the auction is underway the thread is moved, the 2nd post is quickly deleted, and the thread is moved back

Instead of it being a second coin, it could be a 5th coin (with the first 4 being listed in the OP). Or the second post could say that the bid amount covers shipping

The solution is quote the OP of auction threads if you think there would be abuse. Since users can't edit their auction posts.

Unless the OP can move, make the thread self moderated, then delete your post, but you'll still have the deleted post PM to prove the alteration.

that seems a pain to remember every single time you are in the auction area maybe it should be looked into and prevent people moving away from auction
