My password has 17 characters. It is contains case sensitive alphanumeric symbols. Is this encryption difficult to break in case the wallet is stolen? Post by: noregister on September 22, 2012, 02:27:58 AM If they just have the wallet but no idea what your password is, then it is incredibly unlikely that they would be able to decrypt it. You still have to worry about them getting your password due to malware or social engineering.

To be safe, send all your bitcoins in that wallet to a new wallet in 5 to 10 years, just in case someone gets your wallet.dat file and starts bruteforcing it. When he cracks it in 20 years, there's no bitcoins anymore. He'll need to steal your new wallet. Don't forget about keyloggers. They will get your password no matter how long. If they know its 17 characters, now the attacker only needs 10,000 lifetimes to find the password as opposed to 18,000 if he had to try all the shorter passwords too. And the brute force possibilities and time go up exponentially. Like, an extra century or something extremely long.
