Title: Where do you think is the world’s bitcoin center?
Post by: Huobi-USD on August 11, 2015, 07:55:32 AM
There is no doubt that New York is recognized as the world’s finance center with Wall Street signifying the powerful financial markets of the United States. However, New York has just enacted a virtual currencies regulatory framework, namely New York State BitLicense, which forced many bitcoin business to leave the state, including top exchanges as Bitfinex and Kraken.

Where do you think will be the center of bitcoin business? Will it be in America, Asia or Europe?

Currently, Arnhem (http://www.arnhembitcoinstad.nl/) in The Netherlands is the Bitcoin Capital in the world.

See also this reddit thread (https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/3fwwtf/the_story_of_a_bitcoincity/), and two earlier posts on this:

Bitcoin is getting mainstream here. See also these articles: journalist from MIT living a weekend on bitcoins (http://www.technologyreview.com/news/534011/a-weekend-in-bitcoin-city-arnhem-the-netherlands/) and Allen Scott's experience in Arnhem Bitcoincity (http://cointelegraph.com/news/113262/my-experience-in-bitcoin-city-arnhem).

If you want to be truly amazed by the amount of physical goods and IRL services you can pay for with Bitcoin, come and visit Arnhem (http://www.arnhembitcoinstad.nl/) in the The Netherlands (close to the German border, approximately 1 hour from Amsterdam).

There's all kinds of business accepting Bitcoin here: book stores, hairdressers, clothing stores, computer stores, car companies, bed & breakfast, a shoemaker, diving shop, massage salon, gift shop, dentist, bowling center, hotel, supermarket, bike shops, and loads of restaurants, bars, pubs, coffee shops and lunchrooms.

Arnhem has the highest concentration of Bitcoin-accepting merchants worldwide (http://cointelegraph.com/news/112707/bitcoin-city-arnhem-becomes-densest-concentration-of-btc-merchants-in-the-world), making it the most Bitcoin-friendly city in the world (also according to this article (http://insidebitcoins.com/news/the-most-bitcoin-friendly-city-in-the-world)). See also this report (http://bitcoinvox.com/article/1419/living-on-bitcoin-in-the-netherlands) from someone spending a weekend here in Arnhem, living entirely on Bitcoin.

Seriously, if you want to experience how far Bitcoin mainstream acceptance has come already, visit Arnhem and you will be surprised.

I think Canada is doing well with their 'hands-off' laws they've enacted to allow for Bitcoin business development, and Australia is making all the right moves too. If I had to choose either of them, I'd probably go with Canada. Not sure how much actually Bitcoin economic activity goes on there though.

I think there are perhaps two different answers, one country for positive laws/regulations, and another for Bitcoin usage.

I hope so, I did think at one time the US was at the for front but opinions from the US have changed my mind. I do think we should all not wait for a Bitcoin capital but make new ones and network them.

This is news to me, I thought the Bitcoin protocol generates the coins. ^joke^
We do not need a single "World Bitcoin Center" This concept already failed with the Bitcoin foundation.
Let's just accept Bitcoin as a global technology without a central figure head. We all know these entities are
prone to corruption and targeted for attacks. Let the technology dictate it's own flow in the world. Free as a bird.

trust me, there would be numbers of bitcoin centres for various usage soon, anyone could create it.
one would be in hong kong, such as "stock market" that you would be able to trade lots of alt coins worth thousands within a few clicks, restaurants in which accepts bitcoins.
since hong kong is one of the region without regulating bitcoin.

Exactly! I really love how the people in Armheim bring bitcoin "down to the street". My next vacation with my gf is planed to take place in Arneim, just to experience and support bitcoin. I love Arnheim for doing this.

It is Japan initial statement, and they created this "bitcoin can't be owned" mainly because there were pressure from international public opinion to do something in the Mt.Gox case.
So Japan is not exactly supporting bitcoin, it is rather they do not interfere with anything bitcoin related. It means they won't chase bitcoin scammers too...

i don't think if China is the bitcoin center in the world right now but it definitely has the potential of becoming the center because of all the mining they are doing and also the amount of investment that Chinese have made into bitcoin over the years.

Yes. Bitcoin is global and decentralized. There is and never will be a center other than the center of the Earth.

thinking about this for a bit, in the remote case, a very distant future with a good colonization, bitcoin may be seen as a centralized from other population that live in other planets, at least at first, before that enough satellites are deployed to redirect internet all over the other worlds

in this sense bitcoin will be centralized for a good amount of time

Well NY screw it up big time in my opinion. This was another great chance for them but oh well. After this, I would be afraid to stay in US. Asia is also questionable, we all see what's been happening in China but maybe Hong Kong if it's not too much under jurisdiction of the mainland or even Singapore.

But the best in my opinion would be to concentrate on Europe and Amsterdam in my opinion. This would be a great choice, city and a country very open to new things is what we need.

This is interesting, do you have any understanding of how adoption and use became so high? It's great to see that map with so many places that accept bitcoin and with such variety - grocery stores, cafes, shops - really impressive! Do you live in this area?

I think a bitcoin capital needs to embrace its use but also drive innovation and business that's pushing the use further down the road. For me, Silicon Valley (the original center of technology) is a location that needs to be considered as a center or hub of activity. But I'll concede that Bitcoin may still be too new to have any single location to call "home".

The traditional idea to have all financial institutions in one place, does not apply to Bitcoin in my opinion. Bitcoin for me is more a technology than a currency and I think it would be better to keep it close to the

people driving the innovation and the development in that scene. New York have closed it's doors to the Bitcoin community, so why do they need to benefit from it's growth and innovation?

I would go with Possum577 with his suggestion, to have it in Silicon Valley for the USA and also something similar for the other countries which was Bitcoin-friendly. Let's go where we are wanted, not where

people want to profit from our technology and at the same time push us down.  >:(

china will only get more involved in bitcoin than it already is. so it's fair to say that china is the most important place as far as bitcoin goes.

I don't understand why everybody says New York is the Bitcoin Capital in the world... I personally think its wrong.
There are a lot of cities that can be considered has the BTC city coin.

Take as an example several countries whose Bitcoin industry is growing at full steam, Spain, Brazil, China.

This year Brazil has been the country who had the biggest growth in the industry...

In my opinion there is no Bitcoin city but a lot of places where we have a lot of bitcoin action!

Because approximately every shop there accepts bitcoins and we would have not to convert our cash into other currency.
And even customs cannot see that how much money we have brought with us.

Would be great to know what drove adoption of Bitcoin in Arnhem! Other cities and areas could learn from it and build a viable Bitcoin ecosystem themselves
