Title: **Download the blockchain here, updated regularly **
Post by: hamiltino on December 31, 2015, 07:48:43 PM
Latest
Size: 45GB
Format: compressed zip contains everything inside bitcoin data directory, ~60GB uncompressed.
Torrent link (ftp://95.211.210.185/shared/torrents/bitcoinBlockchain/blockchain.torrent)
Magnet link (magnet:?xt=urn:btih:4bba72e2a6f40ed49761f8660506d43164677cce&dn=bitcoin.zip&tr=udp%3a%2f%2ftracker.openbittorrent.com%3a80)
Its basically the whole bitcoin data directory (https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Data_directory), just copy the contents into yours, delete everything inside your data directory first except bitcoin.conf if its there and wallet.dat.

Archived
Size: 47GB
Format: bootstrap single file
Magnet link (magnet:?xt=urn:btih:ca59d06dfa06265a173027028e5661df012c9ff9&dn=bootstrap.dat&tr=udp%3a%2f%2ftracker.openbittorrent.com%3a80)

Dedicated seed node locations:
N.America
Europe

Please support the torrent by seeding it. Will attempt to update every 1-3 months.

Want a http download link? (i do not host nor did I create this ~37 GB compressed ~50GB uncompressed bootstrap.dat)
https://flo.sh/4ufiles/bitcoin-qt/bootstrap/bootstrap.dat.20151210.zip

Official booststrap torrent, not being updated, last update was AUG 2014
https://bitcoin.org/bin/block-chain/

Bootstrap.dat file, created by armory ~27GB
 Torrent Link (https://s3.amazonaws.com/bitcoinarmory-media/bootstrap.dat.torrent)

I do not recommend using bootstrap.dat for newer clients(read here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1310261.msg13441451#msg13441451)), download the latest if you are using newer clients to prevent any syncing issues, it includes all files in the bitcoin data directory

Thanks for your work, but this is useless with current Bitcoin Core versions :D No need to maintain it.

Official torrent is over 1 year old, its about 20GB in size. I know people are still using it though because of the high amount of peers and seeders.

Synchronization with the network is much more faster with Bitcoin latest versions now , which makes it useless to downlaod the torrent and then reindex .

also the total size is near 60 giga, so you must have missed a huge portion, i remember 47 giga was the case of last year

talking about this, do someone know how much is the average increase of the chain per year?

Title: Re: **bootstrap.dat torrent updated 2016**

It's still the most up to date bootstrap torrent I know of. Will update it in a month or so though. Got a dedicated seedbox for it aswell. But yeah your right i just checked that the blockchain is 65gb atm, thought my bitcoind client finished synching it.

Thanks to both of you for updating regarding current total amounts as I have only 50 GB stored on my lappy currently, and I wasn't knowing the remaining amount...
I am on older version, what should I do???
Shall I download the newer version??? Is it safe???
Also, will this data work on it or will I need to delete the previous version with all the blocks downloaded and need to start from scratch???

So your bitcoin client has synced 50GB already?? If it has then you don't need this. Also if you ever wanted to use a bootsrap.dat file, i would probably delete everything in the bitcoin data directory except wallet.dat and bitcoin.conf(if your created it).

My bitcoin-d chain is 63GB but that is with indexing turned on.

Just added a second seed node. One is europe one in N.America, anyone using the torrent now should be getting faster speeds.

Thinking to also just zip the whole bitcoin data directory and use that instead, Using the bootstrap.dat leaves out the index folder and other files which I think speeds up the client sync process.

Compared to what? Core 0.11.2 without bootstrap?

OK, So there is really a reason after reinstalling my wallet on new PC I want rather download block chain from remote source than using wallet itself for this?
I still need huge bandwidth for it, still need good internet speed, is this way with torrents etc. any faster, even 1%?

Core devs say bootstraps are useless with most recent versions of Core, but OP clearly seems to disagree :D It would be interesting to run tests on two equal machines on the same network or on the same machine, synced twice.

I'm inclined to believe in Core devs. But they don't own the truth either.

Hey,

Your going have to see for yourself. There are many factors that could impact performance on the torrent; seed/peer ratio, ISP torrent throttling..etc. Right now though there are very few peers, if any so you should get very good speeds.

This torrent was also designed for people who were having trouble with the wallet while syncing, (database errors forcing the user to constantly reindex, this can happen from OS crashes or abrupt termination of the bitcoin process). With torrents the file will never get corrupt.

The blockchain data is also compressed by about 30%, so you download 30% less data than if your were using the client.

Title: Re: **Download the blockchain here, updated regularly **
Post by: hamiltino on January 03, 2016, 02:44:37 PM
Just some updates on the speeds I'm getting in oz:

2-3Mib/s average I expect much higher speeds if i was pulling data closer to the seedbox locations, still very good considering my ISP does throttle torrent speeds.

Will post whether the client needs to reindex shortly after importing the blockchain data.

And if anyone wants to document the speeds they are getting and comparing it to their bitcoin-qt/d download speed in this thread, I would appreciate it.

Thinking to also just zip the whole bitcoin data directory and use that instead, Using the bootstrap.dat leaves out the index folder and other files which I think speeds up the client sync process.

Using 7zip would make a smaller download than using zip.

If you created a portable Bitcoin qt wallet in your c drive, then 7zipped the whole folder it might be faster to sync because it would already be indexed up to the block you synced it to before 7zipping it.

You can make Bitcoin qt portable by creating a shortcut to bitcoin-qt.exe before syncing, opening the shortcut's properties, then clicking the shortcut tab, then changing the target field from

C:\bitcoin-0.10.2\bin\bitcoin-qt.exe

to this

C:\bitcoin-0.10.2\bin\bitcoin-qt.exe -datadir=.

Adding the  -datadir=. makes qt put the blocks and chainstate folders in the same folder as bitcoin-qt.exe, instead of in appdata.

If you always remember to start bitcoin-qt.exe using the shortcut rather than the exe itself the wallet will remain portable and put the blockchain in the same folder as bitcoin-qt.exe.

There are file splitters you could use to break the giant 7zip file into smaller chunks. People could download each chunk individually, then recombine them using the same file splitter software you used.

Ok so for my next update i will probably use 7zip if it indeed compresses to a smaller size. I actually use linux as my os, so i can't follow these instructions, do you have linux intructions? If making a portable bitcoin client prevents the need to reindex then
i will do this. I'll see if importing the bitcoin data directory from this torrent requires re-indexing first, if it does then i will try and make it portable.

I could make separate portable versions for windows, linux and mac.

I don't use Linux so I don't have any instructions for it, but the Linux users here will probably soon tell you how to do it with Linux.

This is a good file splitter software for Windows, and there must be similar software for Linux available.

There are download links for the Linux 7zip here if you don't already have it.

I've downloaded the entire blockchain via bitcoin.org several times on different computers. The most recent time took about 3 days. I'd still never download it anywhere else though. Can't be too careful in this game.

Understandable, at the very least this could serve as a proof of concept that you can get a completely synced bitcoin core client faster by using torrents and compressed blockchain, it also mitigates database corruption issues during sync. Maybe the core devs will provide a torrent for an updated compressed blockchain in the future.

It would be great if a respected bitcoin community member could do a security check on the torrent to ensure that it is clean.

Title: Re: **Download the blockchain here, updated regularly **
Post by: hamiltino on January 04, 2016, 02:41:51 AM
Ok so after getting the latest blockchain downloaded from the torrent without using any bootstrap file, just using all the files from the bitcoin data directory, no reindexing was needed. This means there is no need to make a portable version of the client and the bootstrap.dat files should not be used for the latest bitcoin clients as they don't include the index folder and other files. Using the bootstrap.dat would take much longer to sync and i am not sure if it is ever worth using a bootstrap file anymore, maybe if you are using older clients.

There was a problem with the magnet link and the download host blocked me from using direct links, they require money for it but I managed to get around it by inspecting the source. They must of caught on.

torrent download link is now hosted on my seedbox.

Also thinking about adding a github download link, that way people can inspect the files before downloading, costs are starting to add up a bit though but I will see. (requires me to pay for github storage)

Bitcoin core 12.0 is the worst version I have ever used!! I can't syncronize for about 2 weeks! When I close bitcoin client it creates log file 300+ MB. There was written the same srting infinity. Then I close it with task manager, and when I start it's "activating better...." and so whole day! Need to delete whole folder and start that stupid client again!!! 65Gb+ it's crazycoin!

Please note that this blockchain is derived from wayneyoyo's (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=143675) blockchain from 1 Apr 2016
Also note that it took me about 3 days syncing newest blockchain from wayneyoyo's blockchain, so I decided to create another torrent after I sync it so you guys gain 3 more days :)

I've never been able to synchronize with wallet. This time it was 2 days remaining then computer turned off/on then I got a corrupt database again.

Is there a way to repair it?

He said something like another bitcoin network ( I don't really know much about these things).

So is it like safe or???

Thanks.

I don't like things like this, this forum is littered with potential scams & people trying to get you to click on stuff that could infect your computer with malware.

I'm not saying this is definitely something to worry about but I certainly won't be downloading it.

isn't downloading via torrent now slower than doing it directly through core? I thought they'd changed how it works in recent releases.

downloading's the easy part. when your computer indexes it is when it's gonna hurt.

isn't downloading via torrent now slower than doing it directly through core? I thought they'd changed how it works in recent releases.

According to developers, yes, after 0.10 things are handled differently and just syncing is faster.

isn't downloading via torrent now slower than doing it directly through core? I thought they'd changed how it works in recent releases.

geezz its a big data for me, its 45GB, how long for me to download that? i am not sure i can hold it for days. and if my internet connection is fast like other people, i will download it from the source for the safe way.

downloading's the easy part. when your computer indexes it is when it's gonna hurt.

I don't think core's client is faster than bitorrent... with bitorrent I can reach speeds of around 800kb/s, I have never reached anywhere as close with core client. In any case like you said, it's when the validation of the blocks happen when most computers suffer. My computer is a modest one that was top of the line in 2010 but 6 years later is not that good anymore... it struggles to update the blockchain. Syncing is so damn slow. Unless I open the client everyday, if I miss a couple of days it starts getting really annoying.

I think you still can, but according to release notes dating back to 0.10 (I think) you'll find that using a bootstrap is slower than simply syncing.

As far as I know the bootstrap blockchain file should work on any OS running an up-to-date version of bitcoin-qt.
Let me know if it fails on any (non standard OS) for whatever reason.

Is there a need for this file to be updated on a regular basis? i.e. once a week or once a month?

Hint for users short of disk space:
Depending on your usage scenario you may be better running a bitcoin-qt node in pruning mode (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNfdLyRZyVU). For example that's perfect for miners helping to reduce the node hosting costs. Miners running a P2Pool node can send me a hint and I'm happy to provide the patch needed to support bitcoin-qt pruning mode.

Be wary of third party bootstraps

That's why I'm providing checksums on the file(s), the source bitcoin-qt client version and OS used to create the bootstrap file.
It would be perfect if another user can cross check the values bootstrapping the same blocks (or a future block) to verify the results.

So this is just another paid service now, right?

Offering this large file for direct secure https download is not possible without donations for me due to the hosting costs.
To prevent abuse, you must donate a sum, which you can define yourself, to be able to download.

The client itself is synchronizing quite fast for free without the need for a bootstrap file. Therefore using a best compressed bootstrap.dat file to speed up the initialization of Bitcoin-Qt in some scenario is a niche product primary for business purposes.

I think it's a matter of decency to donate if this service helps you to save time or to optimize your business.

You can try to find a third-party--yet reputable--wallet.

The best I know of is https://electrum.org/#download, although I don't remember if that would solve your issue or not. I believe the wallet's blockchain syncing is different. Best look into it beforehand.

You can enable pruning with Bitcoin Core. This keeps the size of the blockchain at whatever you set in your configuration. Create a Bitcoin.conf and put prune=550 if you want to keep it at 550mb. The full blockchain will still be downloaded but it will be deleted as it synchronizes.

To be fair, there isn't an official wallet. Yes, it doesn't download the full blocks and it will be significantly smaller.

The torrent from the previous page, made on May 30th does work just fine. Another working torrent is from May 18th from the post that somebody deleted, but the web link still works.

http://blockchainbootstrap.com/index.html

Those are respectively 110.46 GB and 126.39 GB, unlike the torrent in the original post that was less than half of those.

Trying to help Bitcoin & get more nodes running to activate Segwit. These transaction fees are a killer!

If you run one of these clients https://uasf.bitcoinreminder.com/ (https://uasf.bitcoinreminder.com/) you will start showing support for BIP148 UASF - before Activation on 1 Aug 17. The more people that run it the better the chance we have of getting Segwit. The power is in the users hands!

It's not longer recommended to download the bootstrap file for sometime now, having the latest bitcoin core version will make you download the files much faster.

I think it depends on your PC and internet connection. Still takes me weeks with the new client.

Please don't listen to bullshit from non-technical people. Bitcoin Core does initial download faster only in certain conditions, that nowadays could be considered laboratory-like. With the real user environments (especially technical newbies or people outside USA) it is much more reliable and oftentimes faster to do this using Bittorrent or cloud file storage.

Depending on ones own level of paranoia there are two most common ways of initialization:

1) low-paranoia: download and unpack the pre-initialized "blocks" and "chainstate" directories

2) high-paranoia: download "bootstrap.dat" and do initialization and verification with local disks or LAN disk mounts

3) extreme-paranoia: do (1) or (2) and initialize new secure node totally over LAN without allowing Internet access from the secure node.

i will create torrent as well shortly for latest blockchain with 1Gbps uplink
If you want to do it and have fast hardware do it properly: initialize an instance isolated from the Internet syncing to a single node in a reproducible way. Trim that single node to the exact height as the most recent checkpoint in the source code for that version.

Lots of people post torrents than have few seeders because their torrents are barely useable: created with multiple restarts of the Bitcoin client, needlessly keep track of orphaned blocks, keep track of transactions in somebody's wallet, etc.

This is especially important if you're using some web-server-grade cloud hardware without ECC memory or DDR3 memory susceptible to row hammer. People then wonder why their block storage doesn't pass self verification.

Edit: Oh and one more thing: don't compress it with RAR. The RAR decompression utilities create severely fragmented files. Both Bitcoin Core client and most of Bittorrent clients at least create files in a way to avoid fragmentation.

This is simply untrue.

Unless your internet connection is very slow the vast majority of time is spent in validation and data handling even on a 24 core host.

If you download separately you cannot overlap the download and validation.  So unless your download is nearly infinitely fast it must be slower.

This experiment is conducted regularly in real conditions at least with every release (since we benchmark for synchronization performance regressions).

created with multiple restarts of the Bitcoin client, needlessly keep track of orphaned blocks, keep track of transactions in somebody's wallet, etc.
Orphaned blocks are about 1% -- who cares if there is 1% of overhead in the files?  The linearize tool in the contribs directory will create block files without them-- sure, but they're not a big deal. The main reason to exclude them is to get a reproducible file.  The wallet _never_ has any effect on the content of the block files.

The risk with copying a chainstate, beyond the risk of being tricked onto a fork where the attacker has created a bunch of coins out of thin air is that the leveldb database files are not a safe external interface and it may well be possible to get remote code execution with a specially crafted database.  BDB (used for the wallets) can easily be caused to crash with out of bounds memory accesses from crafted database files, for example.

I'm pretty sure that that a UTXO assume-valid type sync will be supported (even a default) in the future-- but that doesn't mean that copying database files from third parties is safe-- personally I'd never do it.

Dude, you are so disconnected from reality that it isn't funny anymore.

Your "real conditions" consist of:

1) Not running Windows natively on the hardware as a matter of core dev team policy, but on virtualized high-end hardware.

2) Using well tested hardware, probably with ECC RAM and SSD storage.

3) Using static (or nearly static) IPv4 address that isn't shared with other users of the ISP providing cabled/fixed service.

The real users' conditions are vastly different:

1) Windows running natively, frequently on cheap computers or external drives connected with USB.

2) Untested hardware that had never run any sort of database application, only web browsers and games. Most users will try to put Bitcoin on a mechanical drive and to compound problems will run various online anti-virus and other lame security applications.

3) Outside of the USA static IPv4 are quite rare commodity, most users have either forcibly changed dynamic IPv4, shared IPv4 through CG-NAT or dual-stack-lite IPv6 deployments where only IPv6 is static and IPv4 is shared. Large fraction of Bitcoin users use various non-cabled ISPs either radio-line or cellular. Bittorrent deals with those much better than Bitcoin Core.

4) In practice the beginning users have to attempt initial synchronization several times until their resolve problems with their configuration following the usual recipe: blow away everything except wallet.dat and restart from scratch, very much in the days of MS-DOS on a PC-compatible. Downloading the data separately at least allows them to start cleanly in an reproducible configuration that allows sensible troubleshooting.

5) For many users the proper metric to optimize is not "minimum total time" but "minimum total costs". Especially those users on non-cabled ISPs have non-metered, well-performing connections only through 8 to 12 hours during night time. For them separating download (via Bittorrent or cloud file locker) and local synchronization makes obvious sense.

It isn't the 1% waste that is the problem. It is lack of reproducibility and lack of possibility of making sensible incremental backups and incremental synchronization amongst multiple machines.

Your paranoia is largely unfounded for two reasons:

1) even if you (or your friends stateside) don't know the providers of pre-initialized state directories, those people are frequently quite well-known outside of the USA and can be reasonably trusted.

2) most of the users desiring shortcuts to initialize don't have any coins in their wallet and don't plan on putting any just yet. They are planning on learning or demonstrating the technology.

3) the "crafted leveldb exploit to put user on a fake fork" is largely theoretical so far, whereas the practical exploits were social engineering related to fraudulent technical help with extremely fragile and problematic Bitcoin Core that has almost no internal RAS features (reliability - availability - serviceability) and laughable error messages like "there was checksum error, aborting".

Don't even get me started on using sensible storage architecture for Bitcoin Core. I tried to explain the benefits of storage layer abstraction to etotheipi in 2013:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=144015.0

His position was that he rather have his company fail than use a database engine that is more than an educational toy. By the time they tried to switch to LightningDB he was out of money and out of patience from the prospective enterprise customers.

Kinda newb here, but what's the purpose of this? Can't you simply download it the "normal" way? And I would imagine it would be hard to keep seeders seeding the torrent if you update it all the time.

The purpose is (mostly) to save time and (possibly) wear and tear on the storage hardware.

Bitcoin Core uses extremely primitive methods for maintaining the blockchain storage: it is quite slow and needlessly, extremely, write-intensive: to write effectively about 125GB of data to disk it will actually write multiple terabytes more in the process of internal reorganizations and pointless optimizations.

Good quality SSD devices have no problem handling it, but cheap eMMC or SD-card devices can be completely worn out before the initial synchronization finishes. Flash storage is always limited by the write endurance: how many times the storage cell can be erased and rewritten.

Yours has a distinction of actually working. The one posted lkloon123 don't seem to work. They seem to hang on: Preparing download: zipping 1 file: progress circle gets stuck below 25%. In a dedicated Google Drive download utility they show as "files offline".

So maybe keep your until somebody confirms successful use of the other links?

Edit: Further research shows that barto123 posted hyperlink to a file, but lkloon123 posted link to a directory of subdirectories (named with a date) that contain the actual RAR files. Google Drive must have different special cases for different browsers. I managed to start download of lkloon123's post by starting it in "Google Internet Explorer Chrome", pausing the download and then copy-pasting the end-file link to a browser not approved by Google.

Pain in the neck, but it could be made to work. I'll update one the RAR download finishes and passes verification in unrar.

Yeah, I can confirm it "works", i.e. downloads in full and restores correctly.

The question is "how much effort is required to use it on a clean computer, especially Windows?" When somebody doesn't already have Google Chrome and payware RAR utility this isn't so easy.

Depending on the country the attempt to use of directory-level Google Drive link in Microsoft Internet Explorer one ends up with either a hang (described above) or a prompt to upgrade browser.

I don't know if payware RAR utility is smarter, but the freeware unrar restores those directories in a heavily fragmented state. It doesn't make sense for anyone to pay for full RAR license (or lookup the ever-popular cracks) when all that's required is a one-time uncompressing. With heavily fragmented store Bitcoin Core client works much slower then when it would do the download itself.

Yeah, but it makes everything go much faster, especially for users of the ISPs which don't have fully routable IP addresses but have to use to use CG-NAT-ed shared IP addresses. Google Drive doesn't seem to do per-IP throttling unlike e.g. Mega.nz .

Now, Blockchain requie over 120G, it too big for my PC,
other way to used Bitcore?

Usually you are not required to store the complete blockchain on your PC.
Did you consider to use pruning to reduce your storage requirements?

It's about adding a line "prune=[allowed blockchain storage in MB]" to your bitcoin.conf configuration file.
A value around 4488 [MB] which is currently about a month of backlog may be useful.

Bitcoin Blockchain Download [bootstrap.dat]

About
Code:
block date:     Sa. 08 Jul. 2017 14:17:11
block number:   #47480
file name:      bootstrap.dat.xz
file size:      ~80 GB [81,657 MB]
file format:    compressed xz (containing bootstrap.dat)
uncompressed:   ~116 GB

Indexed with Bitcoin Core v0.14.2 on Linux (4.4.0 x64) platform.

What's new
The compression format has been updated to xz which allows the decompression of the bootstrap.dat (https://flo.sh/bitcoin-qt-bootstrap-dat/) file while downloading it. If you are an expert you can use system pipes to inject the highly compressed serialized Bitcoin blockchain bootstrap.dat to the Bitcoin Core initial blockchain loadup process.

Setup
Move the decompressed bootstrap.dat (https://flo.sh/bitcoin-qt-bootstrap-dat/) into your Bitcoin-Qt application folder and (re)start your Bitcoin-Qt client:
  • Unix/Linux: ~/.bitcoin
  • MAC OS X: ~/Library/Application Support/Bitcoin/
  • Windows: [User Directory]AppDataRoamingBitcoin (i.e. C:UsersMyUsernameAppDataRoamingBitcoin

If you don't know how it works you can check the details on the download page (https://flo.sh/bitcoin-qt-bootstrap-dat/).
Beware that after decompressing the XY file, you need additional ~130 GB to import the bootstrap file!

Download
--- https://goo.gl/gdHA8S (http://goo.gl/gdHA8S) ---

Hint
This is a private hosted download. To scope the hosting costs the download page requires a donation of whatever amount is suitable for you.

Yes, the recommended way is to sync the client alone.

But nevertheless an up-to-date bootstrap.dat file is useful for some usage scenarious like:
  • rolling out multiple installations
  • speeding up the initial sync (because the bootstrap.dat is already serialized)

Bitcoin Blockchain Download [bootstrap.dat]

About
Code:
block date:     Tu. 18 Jul. 2017 16:13:56
block number:   #476400
file name:      bootstrap.dat.xz
file size:      ~80 GB [82,644 MB]
file format:    compressed xz (containing bootstrap.dat)
uncompressed:   ~116 GB

Beware that after decompressing the XY file, you need additional ~130 GB to import the bootstrap file!

english:
The Idea is good but the downloadserver is horrible. I download the Bootstrap.dat with 2,8mb/s. My Internet download is normally 55mb/s. Really bad service which you have to pay for.

Okay, so people keep saying its "better" to download through the wallet program than to download a bootstrap.

Been syncing for under an hour, wallet claims it will take 7 weeks to fully sync from a clean install.

How is that faster than under a day that would be required to download a 50-100gb bootstrap?

Some claim re-indexing is not required with the newer clients as well so that would suggest to eliminate that.

Even with those things being the case, why is the download so slow?!

With the bootstrap you still have to validate the data. It's not just "the people" who say it's faster just syncing normally, it's the devs and the changelogs...

My assumpton is that they're considering that you will reindex (./bitcoin-qt -dbcache=600 -reindex) after you download it from somebody. Of course if you don't reindex then there is no way that downloading with the client could be faster provided that the source that you're downloading from isn't limiting its upload speed.

edit: I believe that bootstrap.dat requires indexing no matter what, so downloading and indexing would always be slower than downloading and indexing at the same time. What I was talking about is actually getting a complete database (blocks and chainstate directories) from somebody.

edit2: If you have a mechanical hard drive, downloading the blockchain requires 2GB of cache memory in addition to memory for the OS and the bitcoin program. In other words you need 4GB and even with that it'll slow down getting in to 2016 data. Also, if you don't have ECC RAM then as single bit error will invalidate the entire index due to something like checksum error - database corrupted or Mekcle Root mismatch and you'll have to start over with the -reindex flag.

Free blockchain download to people in Illinois and bordering States, but please do me a favor. This is an older one that's at block 474777 from June 8th. Also it was created using bitcoin-core 0.12.1. Newer versions should be able to use it and auto update the format but I'm not sure about the newest versoins. This blockchain is already indexed and it was created by myself. You can check my trust with the web of trust used on the IRC channel. I have a high rating. If you're not close to Illinois I'll disconnect you. No, I'm not being charged extra to send to a long distance location, I'm just enforcing my own personal Internet agenda. I'll take the link away once one or two people start downloading it.

If you want to pay me $3 I'll let you download it even if you're not by Illinois. I will also accept 0.0005 Bitcoins, 0.03 Litecoins, or 3 Primecoins.

The favor: When you download this could you tell me if it works on your system and could you check error.log in your Bitcoin configuration/data directory (where wallet.dat is) and tell me if it encountered any errors when you reindex it, if you do chose to reindex it.

Here is the link to the file. It is a 100GB rar archive with a recovery record in case a bit gets corrupted. It also includes peers.dat. I thought that that might help bootstrapping go a little faster some day in the future. SHA1: b4d34735dac777202b681ef021ed38bfd6bc1f02

http://[URL hostname hidden - please PM me for this URL or use the Gnutella download method]/public/blockchains/bitcoin-core_0.12.1_indexed_blockchain_block474777_and_peers.dat_2017-7-8.rar

Once you download it then unpack it in your bitcoin data directory. Make sure to preserve the directory structure in the unrar program or the Windows GUI version. Delete the blocks and chainstate directories first to not have abandoned files around.
In Linux at the command line it would be something like this:
$ cd ~/.bitcoin
$ rm -r chainstate/ blocks/
$ sha1sum bitcoin-core_0.12.1_indexed_blockchain_block474777_and_peers.dat_2017-7-8.rar
# The result should be b4d34735dac777202b681ef021ed38bfd6bc1f02 . If it isn't, then you have a bad download. Try to do a recovery on the rar archive. It will create a copy that's corrected to the correct sha1 hash.
$ unrar x r bitcoin-core_0.12.1_indexed_blockchain_block474777_and_peers.dat_2017-7-8.rar

Now run bitcoin-qt. If you don't trust me or if you have a lot of money in your wallet then you'll want to reindex it. Do bitcoin-qt -dbcache=500 -reindex #This will take a long time. If you don't have more than 2-4GB of RAM (depending on your client version) and you don't have a SSD don't do it.

edit 3: Another method! I have the file shared on Gnutella. It's the same file as mentioned above. Would someone like to try putting urn:sha1:WTJUONO2Y53SAK3ID3YCD3JYX7LLYHYC in to a program like gtk-gnutella and seeing if it finds the file? Please do ensure sharing is on in your client as you download! This is a base32 SHA1 which is different than what sha1sum produces. After downloading the file with Gnutella, the previous instructions for unpacking it still apply.

Using a recent bootstrap.dat (http://goo.gl/gdHA8S) file can speed up the initial blockchain loadup process in many scenarious, because:
  • you save a decent amount of download data: The bootstrap.dat.xz is highly compressed.
  • you save computing ressources: The bootstrap.dat file already contains serialized data.
  • you only have to download the bootstrap.dat.xz file once and can use it to deploy multiple instances.

The compression format xz allows the decompression of the bootstrap.dat file while downloading it. To download and import/index at the same time you can use system pipes to inject the highly compressed serialized Bitcoin blockchain boostrap.dat to the Bitcoin initial blockchain loadup process.

Probably not bad, but they want $10 on their site! My price is closer to $3 if someone wants to PM me and get my download link that I mentioned earlier. It'll probably take 1.5 days to upload it here though.

Anyway, as I edited in and mentioned in detail 5 posts back I put this up on the Gnutella network. Put this in the search bar in gtk-gnutella or similar and see if it finds my July blockchain 100GB rar file. I'd like to know if it works! Gnutella searches can be slow to returns results.

urn:sha1:WTJUONO2Y53SAK3ID3YCD3JYX7LLYHYC

edit: Has anyone tried? Could you PM me if you can't find the file on Gnutella?

edit2: I have the complete blockchain up to 2017-8-20 as well. Just download the following 7.2GB file on Gnutella and unpack it in your bitcoin directory AFTER unpacking the first RAR archive. Be sure to preserve the directory structure and overwrite files.

urn:sha1:TZOOC2VV4G3LQZEXEUG65DY7VEWFCIEV

I'm surprised nobody has tried to download it yet or contacted me about it not working.

@Mad7Scientist: Thanks for your efforts. Is there an equivalent for Bitcoin Cash blockchain as well?

Is it possible to get a copy of the Bitcoin Blockchain prior to Hard Fork. Something like synchronized upto July 2017 only and not after. I'm asking for this because after hard fork on August 1st, the Bitcoin Blockchain is not compatible with Bitcoin Cash Blockchain. However, if we can get the latest snapshot of Blockchain prior to hard fork, then it can be re-used with Bitcoin ABC wallet and only the blocks after hard fork would need to be downloaded.

By the way, let's say you import a blockchain of size 100 GB into Bitcoin Core wallet. How long does it take to reindex the complete thing? How much time would you save as opposed to letting your own Bitcoin Core installation download and sync the blockchain?

Thanks.

It looks like there was a problem with my Gnutella share. Apparently Comcast blocks most of the Gnutella network functions except for downloading. They do the same thing with Bittorrent to a lesser extent. Also, the urn:sha1 I had hash was wrong, it would have taken you to my litecoin blockchain archive instead. But now those problems should be fixed.

@NeonFlash,
I don't have a blockchain for Bitcoin Cash, but the 100GB rar file will take you to the beginning of July 2017, before the fork. You might be able to use command line parameters to instruct Bitcoin Cash to search back farther in the blockchain to invalidate all the non forked blocks.
If you reindex the whole thing, it will take a couple days minimum for most people who have >4GB of RAM and a mechanical hard drive. Downloading and indexing at the same time wouldn't take much longer, and If download speeds are slow, then it would be faster.

You don't. If it's bootstrap.dat then it's the same data that bitcoin gets from other nodes so it doesn't matter if it's trustworthy or not. It can take a few days to index that regardless of if it comes from the file or the normal way.

I have a summer 2017 blockchain shared on Gnutella which is already indexed, so it would matter that the source is trustworthy for that. IF you just want to play around with bitcoin or BCC with small amounts then it isn't so important. The file that I mentioned earlier may not always be available since Comcast is blocking Gnutella.

It would take a fair bit of know how to make a malicious blockchain so I doubt anyone would do it unless these blockchain downloading services got popular. From what I can tell there isn't much interest in downloading bootstrap.dat or a pre indexed blockchain. I had my indexed blockchain directly downloadable for a time and I only got a couple hits a week and that was free of charge!

The lack of interest you observing is probably related to your choice of protocol (GNUtella). Bittorrent is way more popular and I could nearly always seen somebody downloading the torrents that are published in various threads here. Currently there are about six leechers in the swarm. I never bothered to keep accurate statistics, but I would estimate that my old computer would push around 1TB (terabyte) per month in various Bitcoin torrent throughout this year. My statistics are very approximate because that old machine also seeds other things, but Bitcoin torrents are by far the biggest and nearly constantly active.

Instead of mandatory payments for password-protected files, like in the examples above, better simply download one for free here: getbitcoinblockchain . com

Fresh blockchain + daily update torrents. Just unpack the contents from the first, bigger blockchain-directory to .bitcoin and then merge it with the updates from the second torrent.

I'm running my node on a raspberry pi 3  8)

But you should send a tip to the website maintainer.  :)

Re:- Blockchain download post #138

I made a donation by CC yesterday to get the download but no link was provided. Worse, the comments service is not working so as to send a message to "flo". You just get a 403 error or "Captcha timed out". Perhaps he/she doesn't know the service is down?

Yeah, I can confirm it works, downloads in full and restores correctly. When somebody doesn't already have Google Chrome and payware RAR utility this isn't so easy.

Payware RAR utility? There is a free evaluation whatever version that everybody uses. And what's this about Google Chrome? You have to have Google Chrome to download a file now?

re- #142.  Yes it did come back online and I did successfully download and unzip the bootstrap.dat but the website appears compromised again.  I can't submit a comment without getting "captcha timed out".

I have a query about configuring the file on my Raspberry Pi 3B running UbuntuMATE with bitcoind and an attached 375GB PiDrive SSD.  I was expecting a folder/file tree to open up on decompression - blocks, chainstate, debug, mempool.dat, etc, etc.  So how does this work?

Accordingly, to get more metal than there is in nature impossibility. And also it needs to be mined. Now there is a turnover of bitcoins worth more than 2 billion.

Hi,

I downloaded the BC from getbitcoin[Suspicious link removed] for my raspi node. First of all thank you so much for this.
The issue I had is that I had to reindex the whole stuff because the blockchain loading was not straightforward and the process is taking very long. Did I miss something or is this a mandatoryry step?

Thanks again

I've created a website dedicated to distributing various blockchains, BTC being being one of the first. I've rented a few cheapo servers to seed the torrents and I've been able to max standard cable internet connections with it.

https://blockdata.space/

A slight difference here is that each chain has a software version (currently 0.16.3 at the time of writing) so that there is no extract or import step.

It is used by of Bitcoin Core wallet for faster network synchronizing. If you download the blocks using Bitcoin Core itself, it'll take you days if not week to fully sync the wallet. With this, it'll only takes a day or less to download depending on your internet speed. You also need to consider your computer specs before downloading this massive-size blockchain.

Unless you have a very fast connection downloading the blockchain and importing it will take longer than just letting it process as normal, because if you download in advance you cannot process and download at the same time.  This has been true since version 0.10 or so.

Case in point as to why these "download the blockchain" links are a disaster. God knows how many people got robbed due to it.

Move the decompressed bootstrap.dat (https://flo.sh/bitcoin-qt-bootstrap-dat/) into your Bitcoin Core application folder and (re)start your Bitcoin Core client:
  • Unix/Linux: ~/.bitcoin
  • MAC OS X: ~/Library/Application Support/Bitcoin/
  • Windows: [User Directory]AppDataRoamingBitcoin (i.e. C:UsersMyUsernameAppDataRoamingBitcoin

If you don't know how it works you can check the details on the download page (https://flo.sh/bitcoin-qt-bootstrap-dat/).
Beware that after decompressing the XY file, you need additional ~350 GB to import the bootstrap file!
