Title: Which country does NOT use Bitcoin?
Post by: BitcoinSupremo on April 18, 2016, 06:22:17 AM
I was inspired by many topics, Do Arabs use Bitcoin, Can kids have bitcoin, How to motivate girl to have bitcoin etc, I think a real question unanswered until now would be

Which country does NOT use Bitcoin? And I am not talking about countries who have given a ban to Bitcoin, as I know Bitcoin cannot be truly banned. Should we say this country doesn't exist or you might have any ideas.

I think North Korea and Cuba are far from Bitcoin.

Google helped me dig up following articles:
http://thenextweb.com/asia/2014/01/21/north-korea-may-just-seen-first-bitcoin-transaction-month/#gref
http://qz.com/489551/bitcoin-comes-to-cuba-could-it-help-end-the-countrys-crazy-two-currency-system/

Even cuba and NK seem to have made btc transactions in the past ;)

North Korea doesn't really have internet available for the general public so you're rght to guess that there must not be much bitcoin use coming from there. Cuba on the other hand, has a rising number of internet users.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/ce/Internetusers-cuba.png

Here (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_number_of_Internet_users)'s a list of countries per internet use, you'll notice that in many countries a very small percentage of the population used the internet so it'd ba safe to assume that there's no bitcoin use there.

but i suspect that a very small group of people are using it regardless, and this maybe true for each country out there

Which country does NOT use Bitcoin?  And I am not talking about countries who have given a ban to Bitcoin, as I know Bitcoin cannot be truly banned.
Mah answer (for this question) would be Afghanistan (for sure). Basically, bitcoin isn't banned there but the country isn't developed in this field. However, I'm sure that they'll start using digital currency as they'll get more developed over time (IMO).

Another shitty thread or its just a coincidence that you placed 3 different topics (threads) in just 1 post?
Seriously all your question already have threads
No offense but I'd guess that they aren't asking three questions there(at a time).OTH they're inspired by these questions(topics) {if I'm not wrong}
P.S. ->
I was inspired by many topics, Do Arabs use Bitcoin, Can kids have bitcoin, How to motivate girl to have bitcoin etc,

None of the above ask the same question as OP, which I find it to be a very legitimate question. There's no need to call him out for asking a mostly original quesiton.

Im pretty sure it's safe to assume that there has been at least a single bitcoin transaction that has happened in every country. Even the restricted ones. Just not so much volume.

It should be possible to look at localbitcoins. Any country missing from localbitcoins is unlikely to use Bitcoin.  As far as I can see North Korea is the only country without a localbitcoins.  So North Korea seems to be the only country not using Bitcoins.

No country has totally banned Bitcoin despite what some of the above posts say. Lots have warned of its risks and do not view it as currency but that is not the same as banning it.

For example Taiwan currently bans Bitcoin ATMs, not Bitcoin.   A number of countries including Russia and Ecuador, have some restrictions on Bitcoin but it is not banned despite what some sensational articles say.  And there is no way Australia, Canada and Brazil have banned Bitcoin.

See for current state on Bitcoin -  http://bitcoinist.net/vanbex-report-outlawing-btc/

Some of these countries acknowledge Bitcoin as a commodity, but do not allow it to be used as a currency. Some ban it outright. Here is a old link not posted yet : http://www.bitcoinvalues.net/list-countries-banned-bitcoin.html Since then most countries has calmed down and settled into a much better approach towards Bitcoin.

The Wiki link posted, has some more updated information on the banned sites. Some countries do not ban it, but the infrastructure is so poor, that it is difficult to support it. < Try running a node on dialup modems >

dunno about this, but there are even miners there in russia, there was one with 100 gpu or something, i know it because he revealed itself with a photo in altsection

and i doubt he is in prison, there is no jail in russia for bitcoin, unlike in venezuela for example

i think every single country has some people that have heard about bitcoin and are using it, and there is not really anything anybody can do about that either.
but there is a big difference between people using bitcoin and bitcoin being actually used in the country like having a local exchanger or having local businesses accept bitcoin and more importantly have laws about bitcoin by government.

I think there must be at least 1 person in every country in the world who has heard about Bitcoin. Now how many of them are actually using Bitcoin every day is a whole different story. I don't know how we can determine the general usage in ever country unless we hire a statistician to run a research in every country in the world and then compare the results. Who is going to fund such an endeavor?  ;D

That's interesting - it tends to mainly be countries in Asia that have banned BTC. Not a single African country has bothered - so I guess that is where we'll see growth, especially with the m-Pesa network. Wouldn't it be funny if African leapfrogged Asia simply because they took the decision to accept bitcoin's ground-breaking technology but the Asians didn't? History is full of small decisions like this having massive repercussions.

actually bitcoin is relatively popular in Africa.
especially because of the many humanitarian charities that used bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies to help out in Africa as charities.

Personally, I highly doubt that there will be anyone in the Vatican using Bitcoin a year from now if they are not using it already. Being a holy state, I have a feeling they limit the availability of Internet to some extent, but considering it is the Vatican you never know.

I honestly think every country has someone that is using the bitcoin, for some people it will maybe be someone that is very dark but in some country's its of course also legal and more people are using it in such country's.
I think a lot of people are using it and at some country's only a few people maybe use it although its banned.

Well there are a lot of factors to keep in mind when going about this question. In some countries there are no Bitcoin ATM's or the Bitcoin exchanges don't provide service to these areas. Now I don't know if there are any countries other than the ones which already have banned Bitcoin obviously which are excluded by the exchanges for whatever reason. You would need to do a Google search for that one. In other countries there are no online retailers accepting Bitcoin payments so you can't spend your coins on anything. In some other unfortunate countries there are no Bitcoin exchanges or retailers plus there are limited electricity and Internet connection on top of that like in Africa. So which country does not use Bitcoin is a very broad question with a lot of different answers if you take into consideration all the different angles. I think we need an expert on geopolitics and Bitcoin to answer your question satisfactorily.

I think North Korea is the only country where are any bitcoin users, because there about 99% of people don't have accsess to worldvide internet network and those who can use internet don't try to use bitcoins because it's it's restricted and very risky to use it.

I think North Korea and Cuba are far from Bitcoin.
I think even those north korea and cuba have access to bitcoin. As bitcoin can be earned and not always needed to purchase for cash. And i don't think those country have banned bitcointalk or other bitcoin related sites yet to stop people from using and knowing about bitcoin.

So basically i think bitcoin has already spreaded to most of the countries.

I don't think it was ever outright banned in Russia, there was only talk of it being banned.

I could be wrong, and I haven't been keeping up with the news, but not that long ago one of the Russian finance ministers, if I remember correctly, said Bitcoin was a good thing, or at least something that had technology that could be applied.

According to this list https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legality_of_bitcoin_by_country , Russia was ban bitcoin since 2014 ago.
But you know there is a lot of Russian miner around here and you know what? Government ban bitcoin doesn't mean there is no bitcoiner at that country,  Russian miner have proven it.

i think every single country has some people that have heard about bitcoin and are using it, and there is not really anything anybody can do about that either.
but there is a big difference between people using bitcoin and bitcoin being actually used in the country like having a local exchanger or having local businesses accept bitcoin and more importantly have laws about bitcoin by government.
Yes I too think most of people know about the bitcoins and also using them. But it is not widely and publicly used in most countries. Due to it's online presence. But at the same time every people can take benefit even if Govt do not allows.

yeah I agree with friend now I think more people use in world but all  country government  is not know about bitcoin and more people take profit with bitcoin maybe all country people use bitcoin in wold but does not know about it .

I believe that wherever is there an internet connection -even a slow one- , you will find bitcoin users. people always are looking for freedom in their money transactions which they can find in bitcoin.

yeah, the answer to the question is simple whenever you see internet connection you will definitely see someone there who will use bitcoin for their transactions etc, there are much less areas where internet is available and bitcoin is not used there.

Internet connection is much needed for the growth of bitcoin. Only few countries are lacking internet accessibility. Even 3rd world countries has got best access to internet compared to grown countries.

Yes, every country is using BTC and the reach of mobile technology and internet are some reasons. But I too feel the promotion of BTC is so less that even your neighbors do not know whether you are using something like BTC.

If you will know about reality in N. Korea, how brutal this regime is, you will not ask this question.
They are completely isolated from outside world, no communication, relationship, nothing...

Even this 600 people who are allowed to use Internet for the moment, they use it in order to protect their country and find info which they can use.
no way they can freely communicate with outside world or even trade with Bitcoin.
For such things they could be killed or send to prison, whole family.
Good news is that probably N. Korea is only such country in the world and I'm sure in every other country in the world, there are some people who can use Bitcoin without problem :)

Nope.

Not in Peru.  Peru has a fairly free economy, but the infrastructure is not so good (although in Lima and elsewhere there is usually broadband available).  The problem in Peru is that no one (a few exceptions) is interested, and there is no demand like is seen in Argentina and Venezuela (with controlled economies).  In Peru, everyone is free to use US$, even the big grocery stores in Lima will take dollars.

We go to Peru once or twice per year.  I would love to see BTC become more accepted there.  It would make it easier to buy things quietly down there.

In my country (Nicaragua) probably only 1% of the people knows about the existence of Bitcoin and makes use of this.

I think that if a country is not technologically advanced is very difficult to get to know about innovations like Bitcoin.

Another factor of non-use may be that people resist change or simply not interested to know about the topic.

Any country can use Bitcoin, the main point of Bitcoin is that it is permissions, so it means that no mater what opinion the government of X country has about Bitcoin, everyone can still use it because there are always workarounds to end up using it. Now as far as demographics go, I don't think there is a way to know the amount of users in A or B country.

What is the definition of Bitcoin usage in a given country? Do you mean people holding Bitcoins or having an economy based on Bitcoin because there are a lot of different factors that can influence how much a country is invested in Bitcoin. For example there are countries where there are no places to spend your Bitcoins on products but there are people who own the crypto so does this mean this country doesn't use Bitcoin even though its citizens are in possession of coins? And I learned through the Trump wall story that Mexico has only 2 or 3 ATM machines in the whole country and no exchanges whatsoever. Is this enough to consider Mexico a country that uses Bitcoin or not?

Well, it's not exactly like this. If you live in a country like North Korea you'd most likely be put in jail for using Bitcoin or even executed if they make you "confess" that you are a Western spy. As for transactions which apparently were made from North Korea I think they were made by the government institutions not by ordinary people.

I beg the differ. I'm from a third world country and a lot of people here (usually those people who have nothing to do in their life) are using bitcoin. They have nothing to do everyday so they figured out a way of making money out of their internet connections.

But still you're right, if the third world country you're saying doesn't have an Internet, then they don't have any access to any info about bitcoin. They wouldn't be able to use bitcoin if they have no internet in their country. The establishments wouldn't accept it as a payment too because there would be no one paying with bitcoin.

Bitcoin is border less regardless if they allow it or not. People can use it without their laws knowing about it so their citizens do use it. It is not a big brother society everywhere you know.

Maybe theirs country doesnt know about bitcoin existence because they dont have knowledge about nor it didnt come to their minds that its worth to stake with, but really i dont see iranians staking and making competation in bitcoin like we used to do here. Maybe theyre existing but they are just being silent for their existance from using it.

no mastercard or visa card these services do not exist in my country with international bank transfers; how do you think I can pay????

You can see which country  does not use bitcoin, Many country have an various issue with bitcoin, but it's difficult to compare digital currency with real currency like dollar and etc. It's why many country can't to regulate bitcoin. Bitcoin opposite with their legal provisions. So, Need take more time a country can accept bitcoin or use bitcoin. Because a country must be able to regulate bitcoin in accordance with the provisions of their laws as legal payment.

Well to put it in to those terms. Not an entire country uses bitcoin. Only small pockets of people use it.
Now if there was a bitcoin nation it would probably be CHina or USa as they have the most amounts of pockets of people that use bitcoin on a regular basis without being in fear of getting caught by using it.

North Korea and any other country can't stop someone from buying it. All you have to do is send money to a friend in another country and they can easily send you some bitcoin to a account you made. There is no way any country can find out which account you have cause its anonymous.

I think there are probably a few countries that lack Bitcoin users, but I wouldn't be able to give you an answer as to which countries don't have any users because I truly have no idea.

Statistically speaking, there are a fair amount of Bitcoin users, but they are typically concentrated around the developed world. There are large growth numbers coming out of the developing world, but so far those numbers are mostly centered as well. I'm sure there is at least one country with no current Bitcoin users.

Reason is simple for these 2 countries in my view. They both have very much restrictions regarding their internet connection. In N.Korea only 600 people have access to the internet, a lot of them workers and spies working for the N.Korea government. Same with Cuba, I saw a documentary a few months ago for Cuba named, "Land forgotten by time" and this documentary was showing they were very happy when buying a new TV or a new Fridge , or a new washing machine, let alone anyone of them to use Bitcoin. So I think after all this discussion, we know 2 countries which doesn't use bitcoin (countries meaning not a single person using it) not sure about N.Korea, but very sure about Cuba.

Iceland, Bolivia, Ecuador, Kyrgyzstan and Vietnam have banned Bitcoins. So I think no one use bitcoin there. Russia has also outlawed Bitcoins, so chances are slim that bitcoin are used there. Condition of North Korea and Cuba is pathetic not only in terms of Bitcoins but also in general terms. These countries have no connection to rest of the world.

Another reason why NoKor doesn't use bitcoin is that they are a very strict country and they try to wall up themselves from other countries. I mean, You'll need a special permit to enter North Korea (as far as I know). They don't have much equipments or materials or other stuffs that came from outside their country. Most are from their own production.

i personally do not know that which country are not using bitcoin. because i know about a lot of countries that there people are using bitocin. but i also heard from the people that in Amazon they do not use bitcoin. now i am confused that either their people are not using bitcoin or the state is no allowing the people to use bitocin. i heard about that Russia has also banned bitcoin but i think there people are still using bitociin and doing trade in it then why the people of Amazon are not doing so.

Africa means a whole continent so,... I think there are many country having internet access so... They can know about bitcoins but there is something that's stopping them to use it :D..

Well IMO all countries are using bitcoin because even if the government doesn't now someone can use it. Well if you'll ask me a particular place where someone isn't using bitcoin, ill say that antartica are not using bitcoin since there is no internet there I think.
Haha  ;D I totally agree. Even if the governments are using it the citizens of the country might be using it. Bitcoins are made illegal in some of the
countries but still people are using it. Bitcoins are decentralized global currency. It's used around the globe.

If the bitcoin is made illegal in my country, I will not use it. But it is classified by tax authority as property. So I use it.

Hi BitcoinSupremo I am glad that you have opened this topic so a lot of people will also have the knowledge regarding this. To help you, I made a research regarding the topic that you posted and here is what I found out.Top 10 Places Where Bitcoin is Banned

Bangladesh

In a statement the Central Bank of Bangladesh cited concerns over bitcoin’s lack of “a central payment system” which could lead to people being “financially harmed”. It invoked the provisions of the Foreign Currency Control Act of 1947 and the Money Laundering Control Act of 2012. Then, added that trading in bitcoin and other digital currencies could lead to a punishment of up to 12 years in prison.

“Bitcoin is not a legal tender of any country. Any transaction through Bitcoin or any other crypto-currency is a punishable offense,” the bank said in an official statement last September.
The ban comes as an enforcement of sections 4,5 and 8 of the 1947 law that regulate trading in foreign currency without authorization or general permission from the central bank. Section 5 severely restricts payments did outside Bangladesh, which affect bitcoin payments.

Bolivia

The central bank of Bolivia, El Banco Central de Bolivia said in a statement:

“It is illegal to use any currency that is not issued and controlled by a government or an authorized entity.”
China

It is a common misconception that bitcoin and digital currency are totally banned and illegal in China, but China has become the world’s largest bitcoin trading market. The bitcoin ban is strictly on banks, as the central banking authority, The People’s Bank of China is owned 70% by the Chinese government. Banking institutions and employees are banned from engaging in bitcoin business through banking, as well as servicing or doing business with the bitcoin industry. Trading or mining in bitcoin is not illegal for common citizens.

Ecuador

The ban by Ecuador makes the most sense of any ban, as they are building a national electronic cash system, so they feel the need to protect their new currency from something clearly superior. A decentralized currency of finite production that cannot be manipulated by governments or banks might dim the lights on their new program in the eyes of the public, which offers none of those benefits.

Iceland

As of March 19, 2014 the Central Bank of Iceland issued a statement explaining the legal status of digital currency in Iceland. Purchasing them may violate the Icelandic Foreign Exchange Act, which specifies that Icelandic currency cannot leave the country. A nebulous designation, but it sounds like it is banned, in effect.

India

Indian BankBTCXIndia was the first bitcoin exchange designed and built in India. While following KYC and AML guidelines, and allowing instant INR (Indian rupee) deposits and withdrawals, BTCXIndia was forced to close by their bank, which no longer services bitcoin businesses. The reasons are unknown, whether it is based on a perceived risk or just a simple ban by management, but the issue is widespread in India.

“We have today been informed by our bank that they will no longer serve bitcoin businesses,” the notice stated. “We have investigated the possibility to operate through other banks, but it seems this is a general policy in India as of today.”
Russia

Even with the recent legal victory in Ural recently, setting a legal precedent to lift the banning of websites related to bitcoin and other digital currencies, bitcoin is banned in practice, if not officially legal yet. With the Russian ruble rebounding, but still down over 30% from January 2014, banks and the national government aren’t looking kindly on those who are investing in other currencies, digital or not.

Gold purchases are frowned upon in Russia, so proceed with caution.

Sweden

Bitcoin has suffered a small banning in the buying and selling of scrap metal and “waste products”. This sets a bad precedent of government interference for the future, but so far the ban is restricted to this industry by all accounts.

Thailand

According to news reports, the Bank of Thailand ruled bitcoin illegal on July 29, 2013. However, it appears “it issued a preliminary ruling that using bitcoins . . . was illegal because of a lack of existing laws” in the case of a currency exchange license application by Bitcoin Co. Ltd.

Bitcoin businesses have been able to conduct business and get licensing, but the ban technically is still there, if not in practice currently.

Vietnam

Back in February of 2014, Vietnam banned the virtual currency bitcoin for use by credit institutions, citing its ease of use for criminal purposes and its high risk for investors.

“Transaction by bitcoin is highly anonymous so bitcoin can become a tool for crimes like money laundering, drug trafficking, tax evasion, illegal payment,” the central bank said in a statement
While not officially banned for personal use but discouraged. This seems to be the most common thread in nation-states throughout the world. Trust the central bank’s currency and do not trust algorithmic currency. If you trust your country’s central bank to look after your economic interests, you’re golden. If not, at least you have a choice. Your central bank’s national currency, or the world’s first global, decentralized, mathematical currency.

I would like to acknowledge CNN for this.

As a start i know my country doesnt use bitcoin, its mean there are no store or any people accept bitcoin as a payment, there are only few country in asia that has bitcoin store
Try introducing them to bitcoin and maybe go to school assemblies teaching the audience about bitcoins sooner or later they will start using it this could've been done a few years back and we could've built bitcoin much more strongly in to the world of virtual currency.
What?are you kidding me?they still children and education are more better than know about bitcoin, it's too difficult to can do it.
Maybe, schools will never permit you to introduce for them.
i dont even think that school gonna introduce bitcoin here, because the kids is learning education. not to learning how to make money
because the money thing is the parent's duty to fund their children. so school is a bad idea to start bitcoin knowledge
Yes, this is stupidity no school will teach what Bitcoin is. This is not necessary for them because why kids want to learn about bitcoin. They are going school to learn Education not how to make money. And more important thing is if we teach what Bitcoin kids is they will never understand this. The elder people can take some months to know so how can kids learn this huh.

Well you are right. the school will not teach Bitcoins as for now since bitcoins are not yet widely acceptable in all countries since there are still countries who banned their people from using it. But I think when the time comes that bitcoins are widely used and acceptable, for sure it will be acknowledge and will become part of other subjects. Like for example about financial management, since bitcoin is a currency for sure it might be mentioned during that subject.

Yes you are both right. If the government will set an example by using bitcoins in making their transactions for sure the citizens will be more encourage to use it since their government was also using it. Imagine if bitcoins will be used someday in paying our taxes to the government. ahah That would be awesome right? But I don't think that will be possible since bitcoin are very volative. Its price flactuates every second which will make it hard for the government to account them.

We can buy/sell bitcoin normally , but it's just matter of time.

Yeah we can't blame the government because i think it's because of the illegal transactions that they usually saw like buying illegal drugs, firearms and other stuff. But soon it will change IMO and someday your government will make bitcoin as another currency in your country :).

Its difficult to imagine that Government will start supporting bitcoin and will allow it to be used freely, even if it doesn't gets support from Government I am sure people will continue to use it.

yeah people will obviosly continue using bitcoin regardless of what government says about legality of bitcoin. but the number of users will be low and more importantly "merchants" will not accept bitcoin which will hurt adoption in such country a lot.

Yeah, because with FIAT paper money you can't buy drugs, weapons and stuff.

The thing with bitcoin is - even if it is legally banned by government it still can be perfectly fine used by anyone who would like to to so. You can't effectively ban bitcoin anywhere.
And of course. I am not talking about dysfunctional countries torn by war (Syria), poverty and corruption (Somalia) or brutality of the regime (N.Korea). Basically internet=bitcoin.

the government cannot destabilize their currency and that si the reason that they are not giving any importance to bitcioin. but they also have given no statement against bitcoin. therefore we cannot say that bitcoin is illegal in our country.

The communist countries, except for China, are not very positive towards bitcoin, Which i don't understand.
They will have better control over their people's finances in the blockchain?

I say that if the use of the Internet is restricted friends, not use bitcoin prohibited. Examples north korea which restrict use of the Internet only for government purposes. Then I think this will make bitcoin can not work there, right? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_in_North_Korea (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_in_North_Korea)

i think saudi don't use bitcoin and i don't know why and there are country that banned bitcoin as a cryptocurrency countries around the world have a wide ranging view of the digital currency bitcoin or a “virtual currency.” Western superpowers like the United States and United Kingdom have shown a positive attitude towards the new technology. Some countries like Canada and Australia are still deliberating on what to do about Bitcoin, legally. And the many others have already made their decision against digital currency as a whole, and bitcoin, in particular, so here we’ll list the ten places you’ll find the most trouble using bitcoin. Keep in mind not recognizing or supporting the use of bitcoin and banning bitcoin are two different things. This article focuses on those who ban bitcoin legally, or in practice.
