This isn't really good trading advice, but technically it is better to trade on a bull market, and hold when it levels out.

Bull markets mean that as long as it goes up there is money to be made, and if you trade, even if you sell at a loss at some points, unless you are retarded, you can leave with money in your pocket due to the number of opportunities available.

At this point I would just keep holding my coins since there aren't any decent fluctuations although the price has gone up lately. Wait for the moment there are plenty of +$10 price swings in a single day to trade on.

buy and hold is the best option, but i have a better option, which is buy and generate, so i don't need to buy and expose my funds to shitty taxes

well, you are always taking risk on both of them but in my opinion the risk of trading especially like what you are describing is more risky so if you are willing to take the risk then go for it because you can make more money that way but for less risk just buy and hold.

you can generate bitcoin without buying in many way, via signature, via lending yes with interest, any form of interest is a good gnerator fo bitcoin, just do not fall for ponzi

and via mining of course the emblem of the bitcoin generation

As with what the current market sentiment is right now, buying a little and turning a portion of your crypto holdings (if any) in bitcoins is a nice way to do in this current bull run. Selling a bit premature might be considered as a good move, but no one wants to get short on profits, right? So increase, hold, and sell when you feel like selling. Don't short; it's probably the worst thing to do right now.

Of course in the U.S. trading will give you an unbelievable headache at tax time if you don't have an accountant.

Yes, lending seems good idea but with the offered interest rate on Poloniex I won't do it for the moment.

That's what I have done. But I got a specific amount of BTC that I won't sell in the very long time and don't trade for altcoin neither.

trading is a good way to increase your coins while holding is the safest option where you will only see the $ value increase. i am doing both. where i can i trade to generate some coins, and the other part of my coins keeps sitting in my cold wallet for holding purposes.

I agree with the latter part of what you said. I think it is better to wait for the right moments to trade at the right moments as there are times when prices go up and down in a single day. Although expect that at the very end of the day, the price is a little higher than when the day started.

I do both hold and trade. I have sold a few in the price range of $460 and is now the time to trade when the price falls far enough to $440, the likelihood prices will rise again. although not a lot I think.

I recommend holding personally , Buy and hold until bitcoin reach a price that you feel comfortable with .. then you could sell with no regrets. Wait halving block reward next july and see how things goes.

Title: Re: Bull trend: better to hold or trade?

I would recommend trade in short terms with little profit, less risk. The best would be buy and hold but until the price increases I couldn't stay without trading so trading and holding is great, but not selling.

Days like this where the price came down from +$460 to below $440 are great opportunities to generate a decent amount of coins.

This volatility is what traders are looking for, but when there is no volatility it is better to stay away from your coins. Just leave them untouched.

Holding will be now the best option that you can do around this time because the value will be high soon and that would be perfect for the people that is using Bitcoin.
The only thing that can be bad is that you must wait a long time until the value will be more so that can bad because not everyone has the patience for it.

Yeah it is right to hold the coins till price rise, if you choose to trade you may have to lose your coins and at the time of halving when price rises you will be lot worried, so it is better to hold rather than to trade.

Just buy if you can afford regardless of the price and the trend.

Good thing price dips today or should I say yesterday. Chance to get some lil coins before it goes to a behave rampage again.

Ok thanks all for your opinion guys, they really helped me and gave me support in the past 2 or 3 days during my "brain-puzzle" mood. So i decided to hold and generate, like someone of you suggested which makes me feel good enough (by generate i meant mine and some lending business i have around) so the feeling is not only "it's growing because the price" but even "it's growing cuz i myltiply my coins" :)
Also, to the ones that suggested trading might be too risky during halving approach: i agree. I'm going to stop trading because any trading chance might be a new risk aaaaaand the rampage can make me prolly happier than dozens of micro-daily-trades.

I will lock this thread in a few hours, i will just give the chance to anyone willingly to still add comments: as Lauda suggest...once you got the right suggestions, it is pretty useless to leave a thread like this open...it would just feed the sig spam making people to just repeat the same said things over and over, without adding anything useful ;)
Happy halving to all of you !
Hamu.

In my opinion it is better to hold because there is a chance that you will earn allot of money in the future. With trading you just get something back but you do not make exactly a profit out of it. So I would choose for holding all day.

Buy and hold a savings of bitcoin.
Buy more bitcoins to use whenever you can , there are a lot of cost savings found in buying things for bitcoin.

If everyone follows these two simple rules bitcoin will continue to flourish.

to each his own!

I believe just buying bitcoin and simply holding it is the lazy way of earning money. and that way you will be losing a lot of potential of earning even more. so I would always choose trading over just holding bitcoin.
and earning profit is not that hard, you just have to obey certain rules, have stop loss, and the important thing "trade with no emotions" and you are golden.

It will be much better if you are now holding indeed and that is because there are still a lot of people that is holding because they know that the value is rising slowly.
And nobody will also know what the value will be in the future but holding is now the safest thing that you can do.

I'm brain-puzzled lol, help me with math: i'm using CAT from Sampey with min %gain for ping-pong orders set to 1%. In your opinion is it better to hold following the bull or buy/sell with 1% at each single trade?

Sell at $750 and Buy back at ~$610, how is that not obvious?  :D
Seriously, you can dramatically increase your profits with good trades, but you have a serious risk of selling too much way too soon.
Also, even if you sell at a great time, it is really hard to avoid buying back with only a small profit because you know the up-trend is so strong.

I'm totally a buy-and-hold type of guy in the stock market,  and I was always told that frequent trading will quickly lead to losses if you're not a pro.  So it is with bitcoin, I'm just holding.  Trading to me is like playing the slot machines at a casino.  You'll lose it all if you keep playing.

Holding is waiting for price increase, trading is making money in real time. What is better depends from how much money you already have in
your wallet. I`m always for some fun, I chose gambling, but you trade if you see some fun in that, profit is just something for extra satisfaction.
If you think it`s bull trend then gamble till the end, wait maximum price and sell right before touch that max limit. Also if this is a bull trend we
can for expect some drop after that. What if price increase and hold there? Then this increase is not bull trend.

Reading your comments and other's, i think i found the solution: it depends by your point of view. If i want to increase number of owned bitcoins i need to trade. If i want to increase fiat, i need to hold (waiting for price raise).
Both are tricky but now i have a direction to follow...;)
Thanks!

What's wrong with hodling coins for the long term, and doing trading to benefit from short term fluctuations? It's a win win for everyone.

In my opinion, investing bitcoin to altcoin is a good option to further increase your bitcoin holdings while waiting for your target selling price for bitcoin.  There are people who want to accumulate more bitcoin in a span of time while waiting for it to increase.  People will either buy more bitcoin which needs an additional funds or play in the altcoin ground where there is a possibility that their bitcoin will increase without adding additional money in the investment pool but rather have risk and face the possibility to lose bitcoin or gain it.

Absolutely nothing is wrong with having a long term investment alongside a short term one. People however seem to make things very difficult for themselves. Just look at threads such as "Bank or Bitcoin wallet". There is no need to go for one of the two options since you can use them at the same time.

Yeah holding is more good choice to do since we are heard that many people are investing in bitcoin and many adoption are releasing.. and more stores or merchant right now are accepting bitcoin as payment ..
But it takes a long time to make profit.. trading is a good thing if you have some skills of trading since many altcoin out there are good to trade..

If you believe that there is a bull trend currently, then the best option is just to hold. That will give the highest returns if you are going to ride the wave. By simply holding and waiting for the price to reach a very high amount, one can maximize profits by doing nothing but waiting.

Buying and holding it would be better in my opinion. But if you want to get better profit you might take the risk to trade. But if you do not want to take a risk you can hold.

get profit if the price rise only than you will get profit,

If you do not see a price you want to trade it for then just hold on it for some more.

Just hold your coins for a little bit and see the trending and if the price go up take your best chances to make a profit. Don't sell anything yet if there's a lot of fluctuations in the graph. Just try other available opportunities for your investments.

You can also loose your coins while trading, nothing is certain to yield a profit ,so be wise when you are planning to do anything with your money ,study the market ,study the ways in which you can invest and then get to a proper decision.

The profit will also be much higher.

For me they are both good things to do. So as you are going to have investment with trading and buying good alt coins.

While waiting for the right time to sell all of those alt coins that you are going to buy. Then you can also have some bitcoins for holding.

So that you are going to have both investments.

when talking about trading of course it would be good for those who already have a lot of experience.
but when the bull trend I think is better hold until it reaches its highest point later you sell it, do not have to continue to trade, because it is usually not going to fall to buy.

both to trade and to hold bitcoin have a different level of risk.
by holding you have a chance to gain value and losing value in long period .
while by trading you can get instant gain and or instant drop in short period but trading require a skill , holding not.

It depends a bit if you want to make some more money then you should hold on to them and wait for the bitcoin price to rise the you can trade.
You can also trade as soon as you are able to make a profit.

and if you like a small profit and safety, better to use daily trade with "target lose and profit" so you can manage it.

You mean fiat trades here? Both can perform better in the long run whether fiat trades or bitcoin trades.

In fiat trades, others think that is not profitable since the price isn't moving much. They didn't know what is the worth of that since fiat has stable prices.

Yes, it will soon go higher, there are all signs that bitcoin may gain very big momentum as more and more individuals and business accepts bitcoin in their business. The end of year purchase may also make bitcoin price goes very high as people buy one thing or the other. To get better benefits in near future, holding must be the right option whereas trading has some risks.

Holding is what people do for the long term, while people having coins for a short period of time mostly use their coins for trading purposes. Another important thing, is that there aren't any guarantees for the price to undoubtly go up. You should know that by now.

After a long time that the price started with increasing? Look at the +1 year charts, and you'll see that the price has been going up constantly during that period till now. Price on October 21 2015 was $267 where the price right now sits at $630. That's the result of a longer term price increase.

If it is a bull trend, it is wise to hold because bull trend means the price will get higher and higher each day until bullish bitcoin become bearish.  When the time bitcoin price starts to stagnate, that is the time to sell.  But most of us will gladly hold bitcoin at the longer time because for them; they will get more profit by waiting longer.

Long terms  would  not  be bad at all and  it really depends  on the  holder on when  he should  sell off his bitcoin  . Some  may sell  in a particular  price points as  long  he sees  that  he  gained  enough profits and  dont  tend to  hold for long terms  thats why   he gained money  on short terms/trades which is also  good.

It's good that you plan to hodl a bit longer onto your coins, but there is nothing wrong with also taking advantage of short term fluctuations alongside your other investment.

It's basically a win win situation. Especially in the times where the price doesn't go up at all, even though you were expecting it to do so.

Then you have at least made your profits from your short term trading sessions. Always think further.

For me, I would say that just hold it as you can what is happening with the price of bitcoin, it is now increasing. But if you want to trade then go for it, but just allocate some bitcoins for holding so that you can still expect some profit if you are going to hold for day. I'm sure that the price is going to pump up to next year.
