Title: Antminer S9 controller board successfully mining with R4 hashing board / firmwar
Post by: Moonrackers on February 28, 2017, 04:29:22 AM
Yup, I've tested it. And it works. ;D S9 controller board, flashed with R4 autotune firmware from Bitmain's website, and a R4 hashing board.

Nice to see it works.

My R4 was humming right along since Dec 16,2016, had already paid for itself & made 1k profit... Then on July 12, 2017 over the course of 24 hours, hash rate dropped from 8.1 to 4.1, so I made the mistake of trying to cold reboot the R4 - now NOTHING. The fan spins at a very low speed and nothing else happens.
Is there ANYWHERE in the USA that will repair these units?
Thanks all.

Moonrackers, THANK YOU BIG TIME for sharing this info!!!
My R4 bit the dust back on July 12, 2017 right b4 I left on a 3 month long vacation!
I had no time to deal with the problem until 2 weeks ago.
Once I stumbled on your post, I went hunting for an S9 controller board & found one for $100 USD.
Installed it, didn't plug in the hashing boards, powered it up, the fan went slow, then fast like it used to b4 it crashed...
Was able to see it on my network & used the Web GUI to feed it my backup config, then flashed the firmware with...
Antminer-R4-all-201704270142-autofreq-user-Update2UBI-NF.tar.gz
from the Bitmain website. Rebooted, and sure enough, it now came up as 'Miner Type: Antminer R4' instead of an S9.
Powered it down, plugged in the two hash boards, powered it up, and about 5 min later, it was BACK ONLINE & hashing at over 8.04THs!
I can't THANK YOU enough for posting this possible fix for a dead Antminer R4. TWO THUMBS UP!!!
I hope others will find this info and give it a try. Heck for only $100 USD it was more than worth the gamble!
Cheers man!

Interesting....
I have a gimpy R4 with 1 un-responsive board. Not sure if I ever swapped the controller ports to see if it is blown controller I/O or really a dead card. Will have to try that first.

If the 'dead' board shows up, well I just so happen to have a spare s9 control board from one relegated to being for spares. Some time I really should send the 3 dead hash boards (from different miners) off to MyRig in Colorado for repair/replacement...

My most recent problem with a R4 was solved by swapping the controller port so that I used the one that was originally unused (three ports in the controller).  :D

This is a good thread testing it in practice what I have also guessed, there are from little to no differences between R4, S9 and T9 controller boards.

Well I'll be a summabitch!
Lost the top board about 24hrs after I first started the miner when I got it. Oh about a year ago or whenever the batch-6 were released...
Me being me I can't believe I didn't try that as SOP.

Anywho, moving the cable to the 3rd port on the controller did the trick and once again Gimpy is now http://www.sherv.net/cm/emo/happy/clicking-your-heels-smiley-emoticon.gif (http://www.sherv.net/) running like the Wind @ 9.1 THs http://www.sherv.net/cm/emo/happy/woohoo-smiley-emoticon.gif (http://www.sherv.net/)

Great to hear! Some more Th/s power to Kano pool, I presume?  :)

And to think I sent mine back TWICE before they just kept it and after way too long, finally are sending an S9 as a replacement.  Granted it was being sent back and forth from the Hoth mines, but damn that's so obvious and what I do as a normal troubleshooting procedure at work... ::)

I'm with you, NotFuzzy, how the hell did a couple of old engineering curmudgeons such as ourselves miss that one??  :D

Ya! Is there any other pool? http://www.sherv.net/cm/emo/hearts/wink.gif (http://www.sherv.net/)
I started out on EMC way back in 2014 and was on/off between them And Kano until Josh Zerlan shut down EMC as part of the BFL shutdown kerfuffle early 2015. Been here ever since.

No idea...
Hmm might have celebrated too soon. Lost the same top boad @ 19min of running. With just the 1 board running I had OC'd to 650 so hopefully dropping to 625 or lower closer to Stock will do the trick....

edit: Tried going as low as 537.6MHz, still no joy. Initially the board is seen then ~1min after than it drops a whole bank of ooooo's shortly followed by what remain turning to xxxx's. Definitely a thermal problem with a bad solder joint opening somewhere on the board. De-powered bad board and returned good board back to 650.
Poop.

Yes! Only one R4 kickin' a bit over 8.04 THs, but I plan on getting at least 5 more 7.0+ THs machines up and running b4 the end of next month.

I researched, and started here, and have stayed here.

Never heard of this 'MyRig in Colorado for repair/replacement'.
Do you know if they also repair controller cards?
Is this https://bitmainwarranty.com/ the company you are referring to?
Thanks

Yes.  BitmainWarranty.

I guess they never went 100% through with changing their brand name to the "MyRig".
