Title: How do I start investing in cryptocurrency?
Post by: kipikipi on July 11, 2017, 06:14:55 PM
Hello guys. Im pretty new to cryptocurrency. So I have read  for about 1 month news and articles about altcoins and bitcoin, mining vs buying crypto, trading and investing, checking each day price of top 10 coins. I do understand that I can not make billions since I should started few years ago. But I really like the idea of crypto and I would like to support / help it by buying / investing some money into altcoins. I dont have enough money to buy bitcoin. Here come questions :

1) Im interested in benefit / result in long term. So I want to make my portfolio low risk. I have read here on forum different opinions like “litecoin is total ***” and that “all altcoins dont have future” and “bubble of altcoins will be destroyed”. As Im pretty newbie on which factors should I first look at? Capitalisation? Creator of coin? Technologie or protocol?
2) Would you suggest to divide my start capital in 10 parts?
3) Is it OK to buy part of bitcoin and not whole coin?
4) Is it good time to buy now coins since almost every coin is dropping in price? Should I wait now or buy after SegWit?
5) Can you please link other forums or websites with helpful info for exploring and learning?
6) And some reliable websites for buying crypto from Europe and online wallets?
7) If I also want to try mining should I start then with coins like litecoin and ripple?
8) Which alternative is good to programm Coinigy (trading programm) ?

Thanks for reading and good luck all.

I would recommend reading more and more and then even more before you start investing. There are so many silly things that can go wrong when trading coins and be converting cash into coins. Just remember to walk slow and when in doubt, read more. There is an uber ton of information online, use it! Cheers! Best of luck!

You can definitely buy part of a bitcoin and not a whole coin. There is no benefit to buying a whole coin.

It is difficult to say if now is a good time to invest or not. We'll have to see what happens with Segwit, but long term it is probably still a good investment.

There really is nothing holding you back. If I were you I would do a ton of research first but you really can buy as much money's worth as you have!

Start with a simple service like BitStamp or Bittrex for trading altcoins. Start slow and go low!

The all you need is more and more knowledge. I dont think you have enough knowledge to start trading. Trading requires a good patience, a good research and also you have to wait for long time for big profits. Trading can also lead you to loss sometimes with a lack of knowledge. I also had many loss. Recently i purchased LDOGE coin at some 13 satoahi and now its price is 3 satoshi. I have to wait a long time to gain my profit now. If you have enough money, you can invest in some good miners. Mining Altcoins like LTC, ETH will also give you good profits.

Investing in crypto currency is a very profitable business. But you always need to read the news and understand the situation on the market. The main thing is to be able to fix profits and get out on time with the profit. Then buy again when the price goes down

Op accept the simplicity of trading strategy and buying any coins when the price is low and sell when the price high and you will see alot of coins in your wallet. Many people are looking for high secret of successful traders but conventional trading teach us alot of secret about coins trading. You can also buying small units of bitcoin is not when you have one bitcoin before you can trade.

Hi!
I am fairly new to this myself, about a year ago I bought my first Bitcoins and have been interested in cryto currencies  considerably longer than that.

Although I agree that reading as much as you can is the base of every new endeavour one wants to start because information is like material for brain to process and generate ideas and views of particular subject , there is only so much that you can read. I would suggest to go ahead and buy bitcoins or other crypto currencies in small amounts in various websites.

Why?
Because in this way you will be ready for when you want to make a bigger order, will know about the security features and costs of buying and selling.
Also the time it takes for you to buy/ sell the coins.

In other words- get experience buying and selling with small amounts.

Yes, on exchanges specify a BUY order price rather than just acquiring at the level the platform gives you.

Your first objective should be to arm yourself against the scammers and potential pitfalls via education, information.

Just buying cryptocurrency and holding onto them might earn you some nice returns within a few years

Holding is ok, you might make a lot of profit by smart trading if you got the time and the skill to do so.

I am in the same boat as the op. I can remember talking about bitcoin years ago and not doing anything about it. Then a couple of years ago started going on faucets to start off. I should of just started buying then as the hours wasted on faucets didn't equal what I could of bought with an hours pay. As for alt coins all that needs to happen is for a coin to become more mainstream than bitcoin. We are already seeing this with eth and people who missed the original bitcoin voyage are on that one

I would surely suggest you to watch till June 31 because it is sure to have a decrease in price of Bitcoins along with all other coins.
It's highly likely that the price will decrease even more after Aug 1 but I'm not perfectly confident about that.

so I have some few more questions.

I have seen in Internet trader groups that sell information about pump of some coin. is that really working? smells like other people want your money for registration.

is it still profitable to invest money in cloud mining like genesis? have read only positive reviews.

have a good sunday!

Definately you can buy some part of bitcoin it is not important to buy whole coin & u can start trading with small value of bitcoin In the starting go slow don't make haste & you should aslo do some research while trading any coin & to take opinion of others will also be helpful while trading.

I would recommend to watch cryptocurrencies yourself on exchangers like poloniex, yobit, cryptopia or livecoin. You will get a good feeling about coins that will pump and to studybitcointalk for profitable ICO.
Cloud mining contracts can be, if any, at the most profitable on longterm. You have mostly at least to wait for one year to begin to make profit.

Hi kipikipi, and welcome to bitcointalk/cryptocurrency. I just wrote an article that may help with a few of your questions:

Cryptocurrency and Market Timing Irrationality - http://dnotesedu.com/2017/07/cryptocurrency-market-timing-irrationality/

"So I want to make my portfolio low risk." - This will be virtually impossible in current environment, but there are a few tips in the article that may help.

"Would you suggest to divide my start capital in 10 parts?" - That is a good way to spread out your risk, along with starting out with small $ amounts. This is the strategy used by penny stock investors, with the hopes that one of their choices will turn "blue chip", even if the rest flop.

"Can you please link other forums or websites with helpful info for exploring and learning?"  -  The following sites have input from team members with extensive experience in business and finance, on top of their knowledge of the cryptocurrency industry:

DNotesEDU is an educational site for cryptocurrency and personal financial literacy, with new material being worked on regularily - http://dnotesedu.com/

CryptoMoms is a currency-neutral learning center that is open to everyone. The forum is a great place to learn and ask questions - http://cryptomoms.com/forum/

Let me know if you have any questions. Good luck!

2. Divide your capital into 10 parts is good though, so when 1 down you still have 9 left to cover it.
3. I think it's good to buy bitcoin and some for alt coin too, but buying all for whole bitcoin also good.
4. Fifty-fifty for me, we still don't know what will happen to bitcoin after segwit come.

You might like to start serving as a local bitcoin seller, clearly you have to discover a minimum of a small amount concerning the systems to enable you to stay secure. Apart from that although, there is that 'returns' in your life do not arrive unless you first submitted lots of efforts.

This is a high-risk investment for couple of factors like its price is unstable, people unsure from now exactly where its value would go.You will not receive earnings really quickly, yet over the years.Bitcoin could hit $100,000 in 10 years, i read the news a few week ago.

Altcoin isnt a low risk investment, they are very volatile, but in long term if you bealive in the technology it can be a very good investment.
Trading need a lot of knowledge so I would recommend to study a lot before strat trading.
About buy after or before SegWit, I will wait to see how the market will respond to these changes.

Always be very careful never to invest money you don't want to loose. Several plan is pointed out on numerous HYIP monitors which may be indication it has got to do with HYIPs which usually 99% turning out to be rip-off soon or afterwards regardless of how beautifull they may be and no matter exactly what they're declaring or lying on their own websites.

Hi Kipikipi!

I guess BTC is not exactly low risk (bank investments are safer but they offer less profit), but btc is definitely safer than most alts.
I'd say start trading with small ammounts at first!

2)Dividing your capital is a great a idea so you can minimize loss.

4) I'd say it's a good time to invest, prices are down, and they might go even lower but eventually they will rise again. Buy now and start your journey in the crypto world ;)

5) I created a thread with learning resources that will be really helpful if you invest time in reading/watching: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1996471.0

6) I use coinbase and bittrex from Spain, all good.

I hope it was useful  ;) good luck!

Get some bitcoins from localbitcoins using fiat and start trading altcoins in some major exchanges.
Altcoins gives you the best returns, so I would re-invest rather than holding the bitcoins.

Investing in crypto currency is a very profitable business. But you always need to read the news and understand the situation on the market. You will get a good feeling about coins that will pump and to studybitcointalk for profitable ICO.

Yup, its very important to inform yourself about coins you want to invest, major thing is POW/POS state, POS state means coins are distribute and inflation is very low, or none, those coins have good potential to invest, one of those coins is netko, a good example, od pos coin, and not too many coins on market, guarantees you good price in future.

I think it's a good time to invest because Bitcoin is scaling up until the end of the year.
So it will remain steady for a few months.

Buy BTC and hold it. Can put a portion of it on Bitfinex for margin trading lending. that way you go around the exchange learning about it, looking at the charts and start to feel it. Learn a lot and trade it. Only what you can afford to loose BTW.

It is very important to make a research first before you make an investment in cryptocurrency for you to be able to learn on how to invest and what is the proper or right time to invest. Take time to watch some videos and read some comments to get some ideas and advises about investment.

But for me, I also consider buying bitcoin and keep it as a way of investment because when bitcoin reach the highest price you will earn a profit from it.

Investing in cryptocurrency long term is tricky because of the uncertainty and volatility in the market. Since you will be keeping the token for long term, I  would suggest reading the Whitepaper of cryptocurrencies you are interested in several times, and also examine other people feedback on those cryptocurrencies on Bitcointalk, Reddit and social media.

Just buy a fraction of a bitcoin to trade and only risk what you can afford to lose

I would suggest you study more and more there are enough videos available on youtube & study it then plan to invest in cryptocurreny for cryptocurrency trading you need to register with cryptocurrency broker I would suggest you to register with Bittrex that I found more Genuine & I would suggest you trade top 10 coins. My best wishes with you.

If one is a newbie i'm not sure trading is the best way to start investing in cryptocurrencies. The tradebots and more experienced traders will probably get the better of him/her, resulting in losses.

Just buy what you like and hold that for a few years.

I can notice people getting so much afraid of segwit events on August 1. In the case, huge dumping most of the legit altcoins. Don't panic, we should use this time properly to store more coins as we can. In short, be cool and hold with tight.

if you are looking to buy BTC and invest in it, start with coinbase(if you don't care that they will know who you are).

If you want privacy, use localbitcoins and buy it with cash from someone locally(it has its own risks too).

or go find a bitcoin ATM machine, you can google their locations.

You still see people invest in this shady and scammy coins.  We do need to look better at the insights of every coin. What team is behind it, is there any management. How strong is the product, is there any product at all? Personally I always use:  https://www.coincheckup.com The site is my go to place for  crypto investment analaysis and indepth coin research.  Go to:  https://www.coincheckup.com/coins/Ethereum#analysis To check  Ethereum Research report.

Correct. You are just going to be a bagholder of an altcoin for a long time. It's not a smart move buying coins that already pumped. Maybe try buying altcoin with low values that has the potential to rise.

You can definitely buy part of a bitcoin and not a whole coin. There is no benefit to buying a whole coin.

It is difficult to say if now is a good time to invest or not. We'll have to see what happens with Segwit, but long term it is probably still a good investment.
At the moment it is too expensive to buy bitcoin, the price has gone up very rapidly in this last week so I think it could be a good idea to wait since I think there are good chances the price goes down a little bit in the next days or weeks.

As we have spent 2 years of test marketing on people's awareness in this industry within some Asian countries, we figured the wisest way to welcome new users into the field is to provide an online wallet with one-click exchange to BTC for example.
The Philippines was the best in our conclusion, due to high demands by the OFWs, although they don't understand well about how they work or how to wisely purchase them.
If you want to invest, then it's probably wiser to study the value differences of several major exchanges and try to purchase at the lowest, but also want to watch out if the system is stable enough.

In my opinion, $100 is the minimum amount to start investing. Because if you try to invest less, commissions (for transactions in BTC/ETH network) will be significant in relation to your investment.
But you should be aware that you could lose the whole amount of invested money. So you should invest only amount of money, which you can afford to lose.
Good luck! :)

Correct this is a classic newbie mistake they get excited about bitcoin and then they buy near the tip and from there the only thing bitcoin can do is to go down in price, this is why it is better to try to find the best point to enter the market and most of the time that is when the price is at its lowest.

Thanks for reading and good luck all.

Hi kipikipi,

1) For a steady and profitable long term investment with lower risk, diversification is your best bet. The price of individual coins can go up and down but the market cap of cryptocurrency is generally going up, so buying a basket of stable coins like Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, and so forth can average out the daily fluctuations and potential risks of individual coins, while providing a positive return.

2) Why are you dividing them into 10 parts? A simple strategy would be Dollar cost averaging (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dollar_cost_averaging) where you investing the same but small amount everyday no matter the price goes up or down to again, average out the the daily fluctuations. This is simple and useful if you only want to invest in one coin.

3) Sure. Bitcoin is divisible up to 8 decimal places, but most exchanges has a minimum trade amount, say 0.0005 Bitcoin

4) It depends on your investment horizon. If you plan to hold for at least few years than the price now is low of course. If you want to do swing trades in the short term than a lot of analyses have to be taken into consideration and it also requires skills.

5) Coindesk (https://www.coindesk.com/information/) is a solid website for both guides and news. Meanwhile, you can also check out our website (https://cryptomover.com/index.php/buy-cm10/index-services) or blog (https://medium.com/cryptomover/tagged/beginner) to learn more about index investing.

6) Not sure about this and correct me if I am wrong, but for Europe I believe Bitstamp is the largest and most reliable exchange to trade. I will not recommend using an online wallet, though. A better choice would be desktop wallets or hardware wallets. In one of our blog post (https://medium.com/cryptomover/become-a-cryptocurrency-trader-in-5-minutes-8fc476561c32) we also explained the difference between hot wallets and cold wallets.

7) Sorry I am not familiar with mining, but not all coins are minable, like Ripple and XEM. You'll need to check that.

8 ) What do you mean? I would rather trade on the exchange, than exporting the trading account to a third party though.

Please free feel to ask me if you still have more questions :)

As Im pretty newbie on which factors should I first look at? Capitalisation? Creator of coin? Technologie or protocol?
2) Would you suggest to divide my start capital in 10 parts?

If you are looking at the long term value and prefer something relatively "stable" compared to how altcoins can be, you should put your money in either BTC, or ETH. These two are the base, and while risk still exists it would be safer than putting on alts (unless you want to gamble or trust it, the later takes time for research though). All the factors you cited are importants things to look into if you get into let's say an ICO, but don't foul yourself most people are just willing to speculate and some won't even look at the tech as long as it looks promising. Try to see what others are saying but keep in mind that they can also use FOMO or FUD (terms you should be familiar with), always stay alert.

As for the division you intent to make, that's solely depending on the risk you want to take, and I probably can't make that decision for you.

3) Is it OK to buy part of bitcoin and not whole coin?

Of course, otherwise plenty of people could not afford it, before the fees and delays were that high, you could buy stuff easily at simple shops in Europe. At that time, I would not have payed 300$ a coffee ;)

4) Is it good time to buy now coins since almost every coin is dropping in price? Should I wait now or buy after SegWit?

Although a bit disconcerting at first, seeing a coin crash might be a good thing if you intent to buy and you think it still has potential. Remember that bitcoin had a 3 year of sleep period, and look at where it's at now.

5) Can you please link other forums or websites with helpful info for exploring and learning?

https://www.ethnews.com is one, obviously centered around eth
https://coinmarketcap.com to look into numbers, graphs and markets for each coin
https://www.coindesk.com more general around cryptos

6) And some reliable websites for buying crypto from Europe and online wallets?

Kraken is pretty good for Europe with SEPA deposits and is pretty reputable.

7) If I also want to try mining should I start then with coins like litecoin and ripple?

I would not recommend it for a beginner, costs are pretty high and the reward not so much unless you have a lot of initial capital.

8) Which alternative is good to programm Coinigy (trading programm) ?

I personally don't have a specific program and I don't think it's necessary, especially if you are not looking into day-trading but more like passing and long-terms investments.

Hope it helped, or maybe for someone else

Before investing money, I would strongly recommend you to invest your time in learning the stuff and the market behaviour. Crypto market is a wild in terms of price volatility so you can always find the good opportunity in a period of short-term but if you are investing any amount without any research then you are likely to lose your capital (I have lost my 100% capital when I used to invest based on other's opinion in my initial days of trading/investing). Learn and understand the behaviour of the market, see what aspects affect the price and study about the long-term scope of any particular idea. The first thing you should invest is your time.

You are definitely not too late to the cryptocurrency game.
Anyone tell you that are missing a few important pieces to the puzzle.

You can still buy bitcoins or even satoshis and make money next week or into the future.

There are cryptos such as NEO, XRP, PURA, BTS, STRATIS and many many many more that you can buy and quickly flip or HODL.

So don't let anyone tell you that you are late to the cryptocurrency party!

You are right on time.

So I would def. not store it online, get a cold wallet. You can def. buy fragments of BTC you don't have to buy one entire coin to get it. I started on Coinbase personally but am looking forward to and believe in this upcoming ICO because they are aiming to make crypto easier to enter with their novice friendly UI and the first ever arbitrage exchange that will allow for less market volatility which keeps so many inexperienced and afraid people on the sidelines.

1. You can invest money in coins.

Bitcoin, Ether, Litecoin, Monero, Ripple, Dogecoin, Dash, MaidSafeCoin, Lisk or Storjcoin X.

You need a wallet that support some of this coin and money - fiat or crypto.

All this coins you can find on any exchanges:

Binance – Offers mobile app and probably the fastest growing exchange. If you need to pick only one, this is the best and #1 in 2018.

Bitmex: One of the whales of Cryptocurrency exchange. You can do margin trading, if that’s your thing.

Bitfinex: Offers mobile app and a popular exchange. You can also lend crypto here to earn interest.

KuCoin: One of the strongest exchange that also offers a mobile app. They have been constantly updating their mobile app to make it one of the best in the industry.

Gate.io: Many new cryptos can be found here. Unique approach and something you should signup for in 2018. Also offers mobile app just like KuCoin and Binance. However, volume is not great.

Changelly: Perfect for quick crypto exchange. Easy to use and great for beginners.

Bittrex: Another high-quality exchange with a lot of coins.

Cryptopia.

2. You can find good project that have ICO stage now and buy their tokens.

After successful ending you can sell tokens on the exchanges or buy a product of this company.

Start with amount you can afford to lose and a coin you understand its working. The best coin to start with are the first top five coins on coinmarketcap: Bitcoin,Ether, LItecoin, XRP or NEO. Just buy and hold, while you keep learning and adding knowledge to yourself.

That’s an excellent question. The first step in starting is choosing a good exchange to cooperate with. You will want to choose an exchange that runs fast and cares about its customers.

Most big exchanges have been involved in a scandal or two, including poorly handling recovery from hacks (and imposing unfair recovery programs), unresponsive or slow customer service, shutting down accounts without adequate notice, insider trading and market manipulation, flash crashes, scalability issues and website malfunction when market prices are at their highest - the list goes on.

The platform you should use also depends on your needs. There are exchanges that serve different purposes:

Entry-level exchanges
Alternative coin exchanges
Over the counter (OTC) marketplaces
Entry-level exchanges

Depends where you are located and what currency you’re operating in. In Thailand it’s BX, in Canada it’s Quadrigacx, in Europe the trusted and reliable exchange is Bitstamp which is also one of the first large exchanges that adopted the Segregated Witness (SegWit)

If you’re wondering why SegWit is important, this soft fork of Bitcoin increases the block size which would significantly reduce transaction fees and also make the network a lot faster. Coinbase and Binance are the only big exchanges left that are not ready to deploy SegWit which has been ready since end of August, although Coinbase has said they have plans to do so.

Question is, how come Bitstamp was able to get on the wagon quite quickly with other exchanges following in suit. Rumors on the web posit Coinbase doesn’t want lower fees as Bitcoin’s high fees form a significant part of its revenue (there is no information from Binance).

We have experienced slow transactions and high fees during the last month and it makes you wonder how much better things could have been handled on Coinbase, an exchange that is one of the few gateways to Bitcoin for Americans, if the exchange had deployed the soft fork and speed up the jump to SegWit.

OTC Marketplace

OTC marketplaces are a valued gateway to buying Bitcoins. LocalBitcoins, one of the oldest Bitcoin marketplaces in the industry, operates globally. Coinbase supports only 32 countries to date.

LocalBitcoins uses Escrow to securely release the buyer’s money to the seller once the Bitcoins have been delivered to the buyer’s Bitcoin wallet. Transactions are relatively quick, depending on the payment method used of course - of which there are also many, ranging from bank transfer to face to face cash payment.

Disclaimer: a full inventory of scandals major cryptocurrency exchanges have been involved in is out of the scope of this answer and there have been many. I brought attention to some of these that I consider important and relevant to 2017. I encourage everyone to do more research on the exchanges that you plan to use or use already - the information and user experiences are well documented around the web.

Exchanges that have problematic reputation : Coinbase, GDAX, Binance, Bitfinex, Bittrex, Kraken, Poloniex

Exchanges that have a good reputation : Bitstamp, KuCoin, LocalBitcoins

Thank you for your time.

My tip is don't do it all simultaneously, focus on something you want, you earn at the same time you enjoy yourself. If you want to know trading, there are many communities in telegram who share their knowledge among their selves. Try to connect and discuss with them.

Also you can learn what is airdrop and bounty and do the bounty tasks.

Most companies that conduct ICO are doing a bounty campaign. Thus, both sides win, the participants get for their work tokens, which after the successful termination of ICO can be sold on the exchange, and the company receives the spread of its product.

Mainly create some account on main crypto exchanges such are Binance, Bitfinex, Poloniex etc. Then try familiar with their trading platforms. Always stay tune with News. News will help to get more profit with market variations. Buy some small amount of bitcoin for trading. I think it is better to put small amount than huge amount as beginner level

We would recommend choosing and buying a PoS coin, which you believe will increase in volume and price and consider staking or setting up a Masternode. Its an easy and sure way to have stable passive income. This way you don't have to worry about expensive mining "tools" , your electricity bill won't make you cry every month and you still get all the benefits of mining, without the downsides. In our opinion at Staking.com, we believe that PoS is the future of cryptocurrencies and the sooner you get familiar with it, the easyer it will be for you to adapt to the upcoming changes in the crypto world.
Hope this helps ! If you have any other question regarding the issue feel free to ask !

These issues require constant study and painstaking work. Nobody will tell you when exactly it is worth investing in the crypto currency. This is definitely longer term prospects.

It's better to learn about the project and do some market research, check the number of participants in the team and then decide whether to participate or not.If you are willing to invest in a strong project then placing your trust in the RAWG (https://token.rawg.io/en/) project can have great returns in the long run.One of the promising projects and their early stage ICO is going live! It's a valuable project to invest in.

Thank you for your question.) Because this topic interests me, too.

Trading in cryptocurrency is a very profitable one but with lack of knowledge it can get you into a state of penury so in essence i suggest you start slow and equip yourself with lots of research and ask questions from the experienced crypto traders before investing.

Anyone can start investing in cryptocurrency but it will be suicidal to invest in a cryptocurrency without studying about the basics of the digital currency market. My advise to you is to learn as much as you can before investing your money in it.

Investing in bitcoin is profitable. But no one can say if bitcoin still increase the price. A suggest that wait to decrease the value of the bitcoin then invest. And wait for it to rise up the value so you can get a lot of profit.

<…> For example, you can install the Indacoin wallet, it has about 100 different crypto currencies that you can buy. It contains the most famous coins that have long existed and are the most promising of the two thousand that exist in the crypto market. <…>
Bear in mind that the wallet you reference is an exchange wallet, therefore you do not have control of your private keys. Additionally, the exchange is pretty small, and the information I’ve read on it state that the fees are pretty steep.

The essential steps prior to investing involve choosing wisely the exchange you are going to use (an exchange is the usual entry point), determining your wallet type/s and security policy (you should normally try to be in control of your private keys), selecting the specific cryptos you want to invest in (+ amounts), and plotting a strategy (hodl, trade, etc).

It looks like you need to be wiser when you join the market with strong dumps. Of course, take a closer look at the product that altcoin supports, whether it's potential or not. Or just buy at low prices and wait for the powerful pump, you will profit from it. The news is really useful, don't ignore it, it may make you have a huge profit

I think investing in cryptocurrency could be a good investment. That is true for cryptocurrency in general and likely for you as a person as well. The very fact that you are reading this guide shows us that you are interested in investing in cryptocurrency. Also for your corruption protection, fundamental analyses are the best indicators for long term investors.

It is when prices of coins are down that is the right time to buy coins. Don't buy too much coins, it will be difficult for you to monitor your portfolio. Just buy at most 5 coins so you can monitor them very well. Bitcoin is a good coin to buy.
