Title: Why do you invest in ICOs?
Post by: zalando95 on July 26, 2017, 08:38:09 PM
Hi,
this thread I want to ask you: Why do you, if you do, invest in ICOs?
I see horrible huge amounts of money going to those. What do investors think to get in return?
Mostly it's the same case: ICO starts, much money comes in, you get the coins.
But what if those coins do not get back the initial worth?
Or do you invest because of other reasons?

For example (disclaimer: this is NOT hate!):
Why did trueflip.io get over $4,7 Million?

Thank you for answers!

Well, I won't comment on specific ICOs as saying they are good, bad, promising, scams or anything like that, but I will share my vision.

What do investors think to get in return?

To start, I think the answer to that question is pretty straight forward. I believe that even people that want to support the blockchain projects and community wouldn't invest just to help the people behind the ICO, everyone is expecting finantial returns. What do I think investors think to get in return? Money.

This happens because before this ICO madness began it was something less accessible and more risky to common investors (as it still is, but now more people are interested). One year ago a promising ICO would have raised around 5 million dollars and be considered succesful, and then as the company starts to show progress in their project development more people want to invest in them (through exchanges, after ICO period) and them its market value increases a lot, and people that participated on the ICO get higher profits.

Quote
But what if those coins do not get back the initial worth?

You should invest in an ICO if you think the project's value proposition is good, if it makes sense to be in the blockchain and if you trust the team can deliver what they are promising. If this is the case, price volatility is a common thing in crypto currencies and you should keep yourself updated about the project you invested in and see if their business is growing. Finantial returns should come naturally if you believe in the technology potential and in the specific application the ICO is proposing.

I do not think investment in ICO is good now. There are some reasons:
1) SEC just announced warning on ICO and will definitely have a serious look into the future ICO-funding companies
2) It is now in the peak. Many teams do not have real product, just a team and prototype
3) Ethereum platform is not fullly matureed
4) Almost all countries does not have regulations yet to protect investors from scams.

check out the warning by SEC:

Investor Alerts and Bulletins
Investor Bulletin: Initial Coin Offerings
July 25, 2017
Developers, businesses, and individuals increasingly are using initial coin offerings, also called ICOs or token sales, to raise capital.  These activities may provide fair and lawful investment opportunities.  However, new technologies and financial products, such as those associated with ICOs, can be used improperly to entice investors with the promise of high returns in a new investment space. The SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy is issuing this Investor Bulletin to make investors aware of potential risks of participating in ICOs.

Background – Initial Coin Offerings

Virtual coins or tokens are created and disseminated using distributed ledger or blockchain technology.  Recently promoters have been selling virtual coins or tokens in ICOs.  Purchasers may use fiat currency (e.g., U.S. dollars) or virtual currencies to buy these virtual coins or tokens.  Promoters may tell purchasers that the capital raised from the sales will be used to fund development of a digital platform, software, or other projects and that the virtual tokens or coins may be used to access the platform, use the software, or otherwise participate in the project.  Some promoters and initial sellers may lead buyers of the virtual coins or tokens to expect a return on their investment or to participate in a share of the returns provided by the project. After they are issued, the virtual coins or tokens may be resold to others in a secondary market on virtual currency exchanges or other platforms.

Depending on the facts and circumstances of each individual ICO, the virtual coins or tokens that are offered or sold may be securities.  If they are securities, the offer and sale of these virtual coins or tokens in an ICO are subject to the federal securities laws.

On July 25, 2017, the SEC issued a Report of Investigation under Section 21(a) of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 describing an SEC investigation of The DAO, a virtual organization, and its use of distributed ledger or blockchain technology to facilitate the offer and sale of DAO Tokens to raise capital. The Commission applied existing U.S. federal securities laws to this new paradigm, determining that DAO Tokens were securities.  The Commission stressed that those who offer and sell securities in the U.S. are required to comply with federal securities laws, regardless of whether those securities are purchased with virtual currencies or distributed with blockchain technology.
To facilitate understanding of this new and complex area, here are some basic concepts that you should understand before investing in virtual coins or tokens:

What is a blockchain?

A blockchain is an electronic distributed ledger or list of entries – much like a stock ledger – that is maintained by various participants in a network of computers.  Blockchains use cryptography to process and verify transactions on the ledger, providing comfort to users and potential users of the blockchain that entries are secure.  Some examples of blockchain are the Bitcoin and Ethereum blockchains, which are used to create and track transactions in bitcoin and ether, respectively.

What is a virtual currency or virtual token or coin?

A virtual currency is a digital representation of value that can be digitally traded and functions as a medium of exchange, unit of account, or store of value.  Virtual tokens or coins may represent other rights as well.  Accordingly, in certain cases, the tokens or coins will be securities and may not be lawfully sold without registration with the SEC or pursuant to an exemption from registration.

What is a virtual currency exchange?

A virtual currency exchange is a person or entity that exchanges virtual currency for fiat currency, funds, or other forms of virtual currency.  Virtual currency exchanges typically charge fees for these services.  Secondary market trading of virtual tokens or coins may also occur on an exchange.  These exchanges may not be registered securities exchanges or alternative trading systems regulated under the federal securities laws.  Accordingly, in purchasing and selling virtual coins and tokens, you may not have the same protections that would apply in the case of stocks listed on an exchange.

Who issues virtual tokens or coins?

Virtual tokens or coins may be issued by a virtual organization or other capital raising entity.  A virtual organization is an organization embodied in computer code and executed on a distributed ledger or blockchain.  The code, often called a “smart contract,” serves to automate certain functions of the organization, which may include the issuance of certain virtual coins or tokens.  The DAO, which was a decentralized autonomous organization, is an example of a virtual organization.

Some Key Points to Consider When Determining Whether to Participate in an ICO

If you are thinking about participating in an ICO, here are some things you should consider.

Depending on the facts and circumstances, the offering may involve the offer and sale of securities.  If that is the case, the offer and sale of virtual coins or tokens must itself be registered with the SEC, or be performed pursuant to an exemption from registration.  Before investing in an ICO, ask whether the virtual tokens or coins are securities and whether the persons selling them registered the offering with the SEC.  A few things to keep in mind about registration:
If an offering is registered, you can find information (such as a registration statement or “Form S-1”) on SEC.gov through EDGAR.
If a promoter states that an offering is exempt from registration, and you are not an accredited investor, you should be very careful – most exemptions have net worth or income requirements.
Although ICOs are sometimes described as crowdfunding contracts, it is possible that they are not being offered and sold in compliance with the requirements of Regulation Crowdfunding or with the federal securities laws generally.
Ask what your money will be used for and what rights the virtual coin or token provides to you.  The promoter should have a clear business plan that you can read and that you understand.  The rights the token or coin entitles you to should be clearly laid out, often in a white paper or development roadmap.  You should specifically ask about how and when you can get your money back in the event you wish to do so.  For example, do you have a right to give the token or coin back to the company or to receive a refund? Or can you resell the coin or token? Are there any limitations on your ability to resell the coin or token?
If the virtual token or coin is a security, federal and state securities laws require investment professionals and their firms who offer, transact in, or advise on investments to be licensed or registered.  You can visit Investor.gov to check the registration status and background of these investment professionals.
Ask whether the blockchain is open and public, whether the code has been published, and whether there has been an independent cybersecurity audit.
Fraudsters often use innovations and new technologies to perpetrate fraudulent investment schemes.  Fraudsters may entice investors by touting an ICO investment “opportunity” as a way to get into this cutting-edge space, promising or guaranteeing high investment returns.  Investors should always be suspicious of jargon-laden pitches, hard sells, and promises of outsized returns.  Also, it is relatively easy for anyone to use blockchain technology to create an ICO that looks impressive, even though it might actually be a scam.
Virtual currency exchanges and other entities holding virtual currencies, virtual tokens or coins may be susceptible to fraud, technical glitches, hacks, or malware.  Virtual tokens or virtual currency may be stolen by hackers.
Investing in an ICO may limit your recovery in the event of fraud or theft.  While you may have rights under the federal securities laws, your ability to recover may be significantly limited.

If fraud or theft results in you or the organization that issued the virtual tokens or coins losing virtual tokens, virtual currency, or fiat currency, you may have limited recovery options. Third-party wallet services, payment processors, and virtual currency exchanges that play important roles in the use of virtual currencies may be located overseas or be operating unlawfully.

Law enforcement officials may face particular challenges when investigating ICOs and, as a result, investor remedies may be limited. These challenges include:

Tracing money.  Traditional financial institutions (such as banks) often are not involved with ICOs or virtual currency transactions, making it more difficult to follow the flow of money.
International scope.  ICOs and virtual currency transactions and users span the globe. Although the SEC regularly obtains information from abroad (such as through cross-border agreements), there may be restrictions on how the SEC can use the information and it may take more time to get the information.  In some cases, the SEC may be unable to obtain information from persons or entities located overseas.
No central authority.  As there is no central authority that collects virtual currency user information, the SEC generally must rely on other sources for this type of information.
Freezing or securing virtual currency.  Law enforcement officials may have difficulty freezing or securing investor funds that are held in a virtual currency.  Virtual currency wallets are encrypted and unlike money held in a bank or brokerage account, virtual currencies may not be held by a third-party custodian.
Be careful if you spot any of these potential warning signs of investment fraud.

“Guaranteed” high investment returns.  There is no such thing as guaranteed high investment returns.  Be wary of anyone who promises that you will receive a high rate of return on your investment, with little or no risk.
Unsolicited offers.  An unsolicited sales pitch may be part of a fraudulent investment scheme.  Exercise extreme caution if you receive an unsolicited communication—meaning you didn’t ask for it and don’t know the sender—about an investment opportunity.
Sounds too good to be true.  If the investment sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Remember that investments providing higher returns typically involve more risk.
Pressure to buy RIGHT NOW.  Fraudsters may try to create a false sense of urgency to get in on the investment.  Take your time researching an investment opportunity before handing over your money.
Unlicensed sellers.  Many fraudulent investment schemes involve unlicensed individuals or unregistered firms.  Check license and registration status on Investor.gov.
No net worth or income requirements.  The federal securities laws require securities offerings to be registered with the SEC unless an exemption from registration applies. Many registration exemptions require that investors are accredited investors; some others have investment limits.  Be highly suspicious of private (i.e., unregistered) investment opportunities that do not ask about your net worth or income or whether investment limits apply.
***

Before making any investment, carefully read any materials you are given and verify the truth of every statement you are told about the investment. For more information about how to research an investment, read our publication Ask Questions.  Investigate the individuals and firms offering the investment, and check out their backgrounds on Investor.gov and by contacting your state securities regulator .  Many fraudulent investment schemes involve unlicensed individuals or unregistered firms.

The only reason why people invest money on ICO's in the first place was because of money. If you ask someone who invested on an ICO and says that his reason for investing in a particular ICO is because he wants to support that particular project, think again. Why would people really invest on ICO's and look for a good one? The only answer is that they want to profit from it and because of the possible gain, they take risk.

If i like a project and if i see a good potential i dont invest all of the money in ico.
I invest half of my money in ico time, and i keep second half for the time it is listed.

I don't because ICOs are bullshit and are going against the basics of crypto.

But as I see it the reason others put money into ICOs comes with the massive increase of Bitcoin's price, which attracted all kinds of people seeking quick money.

It's exactly like a gold rush except most people are too lazy to prospect and dig in the dirt - as it were, they just want quick money with no effort. They couldn't care less about what crypto stands for or even sometimes not eeven the projects they're throwing money at.

That all boils down to what is essentially pure, no-skill gambling; they give money to anon people in exchange for a few pretty images and promises and for some coins the devs made out of thin air for free in the hopes of the price getting pumped higher than the initial price at which point they dump their coins and dance and cheer over the few slices of pizza's worth of profit they made or keep silent in case they lost and start looking for the next pull on the ICO slotmachine.

I know that recently a lot of people are angry or annoyed by scams and really weak projects raising a lot of money, but imagine this wasn't the case. Without recent frauds and other problems, don't you think that the idea of a democratic crowdsale to fund a promising project that could increase the blockchain technology popularity and maybe help to improve the quality of a specific market segment or product has everything to do with what you call "the basics of crypto"?

I am interested in why do you think ICOs go against the basics of crypto and what are the basics of crypto to you.

I am not saying I support any kind of ICO and I am expecting some kind of change in the current scenario to help prevent people from falling for scams and solve other ICO issues, but "the basics of crypto" for me is about decentralization and allowing anyone in the world to get access to investment and participation in different projects and technologies they support, no longer relying on big corporations, regulators and government to do so.

I think that, problems apart, the ICO model was a big disruption in traditional investment model but now some malicious people are trying to take advantage of it. Besides, I don't think that this problem (of scams and people trying to take shortcuts to big profits) is unique to ICOs.

Sounds like I heard in the past.
It seems that ICOs are just a bubble and when I read your comments, most of you are saying the same.
When I first readed about ICOs, I thought, that you get something from the company.
Like when you make classic crowdfunding, you get a product, a game, a service etc.
But in ICO it seems to be just new coins that you hope to sell higher.
Maybe it works, maybe not. I saw some good ICOs who offered good services, not only promised high returns.
But when I saw a simple gambling page collecting millions, it just ruined the concept of crowdfunding. Sorry for saying this.
I mean, you could do such great things. Like collecting for wells in africa or helping homeless.
But instead the most coins just seem senseless  ???
On the one side I hope that the bubble bursts asap, but on the other I hope to see some ICOs with a deeper sense.
With burst I specially mean those senseless ICO after ICO.
I mean after the ICO mostly noone really cares about the product itself. It's just the matter of the price of the coin.
And that's a sad fact.
I have a great idea and concept I could solve with an ICO but I have not much experience about coins or ethereum or anything else regarding this,
I'm just sitting here in my bedroom and thinking about how such senseless projects can collect millions, while others hardly build up their business.
And that's what hurs me in those ICO: That on the one side are sometimes maybe greedy people, on the other are sometimes people with just an idea.
There are always a good and a bad thing about something.
Thank you for all your answers, I'll be happy about more feedback and comments :)

Most of the people invest in ICO because they want to earn money, or they believe that the ICO can become huge in the future, most of the ICO are not that profitable and most of them even turn out as scam, but if you choose the right ICO it can be very profitable, but I don't like to invest in ICO, I don't like to buy something that is uncertain

ICOs are by definition premined coins which are therefore centralized. There's no decentralization with premines/ICOs/airdrops/bounties/etc at all and while it might not be the government issuing them, a couple of anon devs doing it still makes it centralized.

Premining all or just a significant partion of the supply is a form of control regardless of what the coins are used for.

And when you have someone being in control of these funds or you're hoping they'll develop what they promised, you introduce trust while crypto should be trustless.

If a group needs funding they should use their own money if they're confident (if not then why bother) or get it from the outside, not tied into the project via coins or tokens.

And if they want ongoing funding, they should use the model which automatically transfers a set percentage of each blocks' reward to a dev address.

The answer is simple, they (investor) invest in ICO for expecting a profit. Investors or traders know that behind the profits there will always be losses that haunt them all the time. This is a risk, and I'm sure all fund investors have understood it.

I often see in ico with a discount coin for pre-ico and does not rule out investors interested in investing in it, not only discount investors to see from the success of the project and also from the crowd about the project.

Most people invest in ICOs to sell tokens for higher prices after the ico or to be able to get tokens at the lowest price. Ultimate goal of both is profit.

I only invest in those ICO in which I do the research and then come to a conclusion that the ICO is worth investing and is a good project with good developers behind it.
And most people think to sell right after the token get listed on an exchange and cry that the price is too low, but they should wait for the development of the project and then they should sell the coins.

The ability to participate in the first market sale is one of the best opportunity for any investor/trader. In an ICO you have the chance of buying the altcoin at its presumed lowest price (Note: Not all altcoins have good ICOs). Also when you look at it in a stock perspective you will know that if a company is firstly offered in the market only limited people will have a chance to have a share of that company making others wait at the opportunity to buy in the second market. With that people anticipating surely the price will go up at its official launch.

Although they gave some extra tokens in pre-ico but the main risk is always there. You never know that this particular  ico will be a profitable venture and you are actually risking your money. Which in my opinion is not wise. That's way i don't invest in ico. And if you are really a fan of ICO then you should do some research before investing.

All of the investors invest because therre is abig chance after adding the token or coin in a exchange that the price will riseup above the ico .
If the coins don't get back to its initial worth or Ico price?  I doesn't matter because before you invest you know already that thing thats why an investor take risk.

So that in the end I dont have to regret that I put my money into this kind of project that offer to an investor. But you know all of this is a risks and we have to invest on what we can afford.

ICO is a revolution in finance and technology! For business - this is a great opportunity to get money for the project. For the investor, this is an opportunity to earn and participate in the implementation of the project, to become part of the project. I do not see any negative aspects in carrying out ICO by any kind of business.
Of course now this process needs a little regulation (a set of rules) - this will avoid deception.

For me, invest in ICO is a long term investment since I think this project has a bright future and after a few years, they can bring me great profit. Also, it is a high risk investment, I will not put too money in it.

I agree with you, the ICO should be a long term investment and we should notice the high risk. A month ago, the ICO project is very hot, many ICO project are sold out quickly, and recently many new ico coins dump to below the ICO price and many peopel realize the risk of ICO. So do not put too much money in it!

I invest in ICO's because there are some ICO tokens that have great potential in the future. And there are big possibilities that the value will increase if not in a few months but maybe after a couple of years most especially if the ICO is successful. The tendency would be it might double up too. It is really a good long term investment if you could take a look at it in the token market.

Actually, I don't.
And I don't recommend to invest if you do not have some good knowledge about specific ICO where you would like to put your money. 90% of all the ICOs is scam now.

I am not the best in day trading and because I have a full time job time is limited so investing a little here and there in ICOS helps me make a little profit long term, although I am not always successful in those investments either.

There are many ICO's these days which are created to scam the investors, its like put 10 BTC to make 500 BTC through these ICO ventures. Invest in those ICO ventures for which there are application is already running. Like Neverdie or ShadowToken, they have a huge base of users already any waiting for its implementation.

I invested in NVO and only NVO, Decent and the rest seem to be scams. They aren't filling any niche someone else won't do better. NVO is providing a much-needed service that current crypto holders need. Secure, offline wallets that have exchange service.

Why you can sure ICOs have application is already running are really all? With me, any project can become scammer, just depends devs this project have a look about profit in long term or just want scam in short term and can become a criminal ;)

Ico has a very good correlation to support the success of a business project, a good stock offering makes us a leader before the tokens are in the market trading, we automatically become the initial supplier to their success and we get compensation value, I still remember when facebook publish ipo and very Success in a few years, all who become investors will surely enjoy the results doubled, it's similar to ico. Only we need to choose and analyze where is good and where is not worth to invest.

Ok lets start why do people prefer to start a ico than a crowdfund the answer if you actually have a good plan for any ico you can surely raise good amount of funds and you won't be much liable as your job will be issue tokens and list on exchanges. ICO generally are really profitable there are 2 type of investors one who invest just to earn profit as soon as they hit exchanges second 1/4 of investors prefer this and they hold the funds to share company profits. In crowdfund you need to give the investors a product or service back in ico you can simply issue tokens.

Now If any one tells that he invests cause he loves any project, LOLZ. no one even knows what will be happened after 1st August. Where no one can give assurance on BTC , who knows what will be happened to any project? We just can think. We can dream and actually we are doing that. We invest to make bucks, we read whitepaper, we discuss within community, we feel good and we invest.

I invested in some projects. Although I made profit but ICOs are risky. So if you want to invest, do a research. But I prefer free money, as always

Well, when we risk we need to assure as much as possible that we have points to consider when we invest. Investing and Trading is a good source of income when done accordingly, since there are more scammers attacking we better be extra careful. If we dont want to use any of our money then we need to be hard working or work smartly , find a campaign that have potential for success to have you paid.

I haven't invested in any yet; however, I do like some of the things I have seen from some Ethereum-based ICOs. Ambrosus is the main one that I have been looking at. Its direction at helping improve food supply chains makes me hope its more like activism with a return than mere investment.

That being said, I think most ICOs that I have seen are for-profit cryptos with little more direction that simply being the new Bitcoin. I would avoid anything that is only trying to be digital money and focus on the ones that are trying to accomplish a specific goal, especially if that goal has real-world application and aligns with your personal beliefs.

I think Ethereum is going to succeed.

I think that if Ethereum succeeds, then a non-zero percentage of Ethereum tokens will succeed along with it. The devs certainly have the funds they need.

I look at the market caps these ICO coins debut at, and it's obvious that picking just one homerun will make up for holding multiple scam-bags, if not all of them, so most (not all) of my ETH holdings are through tokens.

I'm one of those people with a good gut for truth anyway. No doubt I've picked a lot of scams/impending failures. But I'm pretty sure there's at least a few winners in there too, and I have a much higher share of the total supply of those than I could ever hope to own for eth, short of a serious free-fall.

Not to mention if I'm not sure about an ICO, there's usually a chance to flip your initial investment back out for some free tokens. But I'm a bit of a gambler so often I don't do that. Usually you can gauge a projects legitimacy initially by assessing the hype. A really hyped up project is at least going to be a short term flip if nothing else.

If the project seems both heavily hyped AND heavily FUDed, that means do your due diligence on THAT one right away.

If this strategy works out for Eth I'll likely employ a similar strategy for EOS and Tezos, investing in ICOs as they come out and accumulating tokens. If it doesn't I'll learn from my mistakes, sell the bags I can, try to scrape together as much of an Eth stash as I can with whats left over, and not make those mistakes on the other smart contract platforms. (you're kidding yourself if you think the market only has room for one).

yes, my take on all this is controversial.

Every time you invest in ICO you should see the objectives and opportunities of a project doing ICO. What I mean is how much the bonus is shared for ICO and what the price of ICO coin should be if the ICO price falls to 50% we still have the profit from the bonus.

Advertising it makes it more attractive and we got more ideas and opinions came from the people who reviews it . Promoting it means they are aware they might critic or getting judged which mean they are serious on making their project successful. Mostly ICO with working products or for more developments it maybe helpful for us to decide where to invest.

It's exciting, but again it can be risky. Shitcoins will continue to exist what can you do.

ICO's are great for newer teams to enter the market, not everybody playing with in the crypto scene has the capital to start up a blockchain based business and a lot of the larger corporations that do aren't necessarily supporting the message of a decentralized system, nor are they really interested in the success of it, just the money that comes with it.

Allowing newer teams to enter the market is great, because it's giving a use to these currencies for once. People don't want to transact in decimals, nor do store owners etc want to have to change prices daily because bitcoins value is rising. E.g using an ethereum token, I can purchase a specific product using a specific coin, so I know the value of my coin will only be effected by people using this, not a fork like has happened to Bitcoin etc.

I think the positives outweigh the risks.

If you have done enough research about the coin and the team and you know if their idea is good and will have a good prospectus then its better to invest in pre ICO. Its like you like the bier business idea (Altcoin) and you are investing in that for the better return in the coming future. It also has the risk associated with it that you may lose out the money if they are not genuine.

I invest in the ICO for profit, most of my profits come from ICO projects. Its value is determined by trust and money flow from investors
Its price will hardly fall to its original price because no one wants to lose their money and now they need time to develop a broader market to push its value up

Have you ever tried to read the white paper provided by ICO management? If you do then you will come to know their pathway towards the specific project they want to achieve with the funds raised at ICO sell. It's like raising the funds first, then offer the products after they are completely developed. This is successful for almost all the ICO and they do give us back what we deserve, the big profits. This is a reward because without us they wouldn't exist.

That's because of the profit that can be gained from ico. People have a chance to buy at the lowest price in ico and sell it with a high price when it has entered the market. That's why many people follow ico.

Following the ICO of a coin project is very profitable, even when the coin enters an exchange of profits earned to double if the price exceeds the ICO price. If you are interested in joining ICO it may be a good idea to look for a legal coin project and distribute it quickly, it is a pity if your money can settle long in a project.

I guess the main reason why some people invest not just in ICO but to other investment as well is to gain profit or to make a money. If you want to invest in ICO should know the pros and cons before joining and investing in it. One of the advantage of it is it is open in public. Anyone can partake in the cryptocurrency industry. It is also a decentralized orgnization. You just need to know if you can really trust the people in that organization and you can make yourself successful.

Because in the ICO as what we all know it is the ICO price when you buy the token in that sale means you can buy that coin in a lower price also means that you can get a lot of cashback in that coins when its out in the market buy sometimes it didnt goes according to plan and just become dump and never pump in short a big scam.

I think the main benefit of ico is liquidity. Historically this is not the case and u loose 100% of the money if the business fail. Also, before mastercoin ico, you only can invest in coin coin(a coin that is just for transaction), and we all know only 2 or 3 coin coin will survive in the long run. At least if a coin is back by some business model, they can survive longer and still have all the strength of a coin coin.  :)

The only reason why I invest in ICOs is only because that I buy tokens at a lower value when their ICO starts, sometimes with bonuses. Since I know that I am going to hold my tokens for a long period of time, maybe for a period of 5-10 years, surely by that time they will be listed on exchanges and surely they will be worth even more. So, why not.

Title: Re: Why do you invest in ICOs?

The decision to invest in ICO depends on your stand. If you have read the whitepaper of a project and you strongly believe their mission can change the world for the better then there's no reason why yo take the risk to invest.

For example, the International MultiModal Logistics Application (IMMLA) created an idea of building a decentralized management system over cargo shipment, document workflow and payments. This is a great mission. I even convince a friend to blog about it goo.gl/qeK3mQ (http://goo.gl/qeK3mQ) not only to raise awareness but also to persuade consumers and businessmen to invest. This is the kind of project we're waiting for before the shipping industry becomes a haven for corruption. We also need IMMLA to protect our cargo all the time and to make sure the cargo vehicles are always in great shape while delivering the goods.

See the point? Investment is a risk worth taking once you believe the project's mission can improve our lifestyle, can benefit us every day and can help us save money.

I see that people who support and invest to ICO or the new project of bringing new altcoin in the market is the one who see possibilities and development for it. Because it can serve as a new form of transaction in regards to the usage or the main purpose of the specific project. So it is a good thing if you will invest in the thing you really want just like in health where it is more aligned on health project. So it a common way for an altcoin to have a name and a price to the market to earn and to have profit.

That is actually the first thing need to consider before supporting an ICO project. First you should personally want to be a part of the project itself in regrads to the project promise or goal. And then make sure that specific project have a new thing in the market so they have a good reason to be successful on transaction. And then of course support it by posting to earn coin so on the future you could used it in the platform of trading or investments.

I do not see why this is such a mystery for you, if the ico fever is still going strong is for only one reason people are getting profits, if you buy a coin and then it goes up 10 times then it is very likelly that such investors are going to invest in more projects for two reasons, one, they got profits, and two, they got more money to invest.

I think the reason why people invests in ICO projects is because of the profit one expects to get. A great ICO projects comes with great possibilities in the future and comes with great profit a person can earn. Some projects can be successful and some can be not. A person must be careful in investing in such projects and to keep in mind to first research about the project, if it is legit, profitable and if the team behind it is great.

the early investor got the big reward,so it's crazy to invest ICOs
Yeah you are right. Invest in the ico period will get a lot of bonuses. But the problem is whether ico it will be successful when launching or even dead. Difficult decisions. Because ico that looks good is not necessarily guaranteed success in the future.

I think when ICO is the right time for short and medium term investment, so we can get profit, because at ico price can still discount.

Investment in coins or projects at the ICO level is the best in terms of good return on investment in crypto currency. Although it has its own risks or challenges which could be that, some may not see the light of the day and turned scam at the end of the day. Am yet to invest your money in some ICO but after 1st August.

Hi,
this thread I want to ask you: Why do you, if you do, invest in ICOs?
I see horrible huge amounts of money going to those. What do investors think to get in return?
Mostly it's the same case: ICO starts, much money comes in, you get the coins.
But what if those coins do not get back the initial worth?
Or do you invest because of other reasons?

For example (disclaimer: this is NOT hate!):
Why did trueflip.io get over $4,7 Million?

Thank you for answers!
I agree that the reason why people invest to ICO project is for them to earn money or to earn on their investment. If you will support a certain project it means you want to be apart of the project as whole and to earn. And to invest is to also take the risk and make the most of it , even if there is risk in supporting such new ICO project thecdeveloment and the future of it is much progressive which means it much possible to develop as a part of the new alternative crypto-currency which can be a great thing for the platform of trading.

It is a positive side, for me if the project is only attracting investors but not applicable in life, then surely the project just wants to develop its altcoin to achieve the best profit. I think the application in life from the ICO project is absolutely impossible

Yes we will be difficulty to choose the ICO projects that has application in life because basically invest in ICOs is high risk but with analisys fundamental of the ICOs, we can make minimalized the risk losing money in the ICOs projects, we must choose the ICOs that has related with real business in real life and doesn't mean there are no projects of ICOs will application in real life.

I invest half of my money in ico time, and i keep second half for the time it is listed.

To invest some of your money is a very good greed, to avoid losing all your money ...
I also often invest in ico like that, to avoid losing if the project fails.

Before anything else, before investing in an ICO there should be some scrutinizing made. That's very basic. If after careful scrutiny is done and you are finally convinced that the token is going to hit it big after ICO, then investing in an ICO is a great decision. Take time to study the token's actual use aside from being introduced to exchange platforms. The great thing about ICOs is that there are always huge bonuses and discounts.

Better to ask why we don't?

There may have been a couple of decent ICO's early on, but now everyone realized they have an unregulated way to raise immense sums of money simply by making promises.

Contributing to those is just asking to lose your money - if the DEVs are made rich before they even start coding, they have no incentive to complete the project even in the best of circumstances.

Most of the ICO are over hyped and only few ICO have potential to grow significantly. Initially when any token will be listed on trading platform there will be huge drop in price and it can even go below ICO price because of weak hands and bounty hunters dumping their holdings. But true investors should wait for more than 6 months to cashout nice profit out of their ICO investments.

ICO = Initial Coin Offering is the best way to earn a lot. Because in ICO times the price of Token has so low. If you buy some token on ICO times. So easily you can make a good profit on it. But, some of the ICO is a scam. So you have to find out good ICO and then you can invest on it. Otherwise, you will make a huge loss. So, ICO has advantages and disadvantage too.

It is similar reason why people do beloved in Bitcoin and ICO that thing is development. People do believe that having new project is also taking new thing for improvement and progress so if you are going to take risk and support ICO on having a new altcoin in the market you could have its devilment at it most because you can experience how it will start on just merely a project to be a successful ICO in the future.

Depending on whether the business offered from ICO has long-term prospects or not, if the ICO we choose already exists that are similar in the market or only visible for short-term interests then we will get bad luck. Presale bonus offerings make us a shareholder in the market, very profitable because with the initial offerings then our profits will double.

It is completely true statement. I have observed too that most of the ICO will end up as way of getting quick profits on the exchangers with the help of presale tokens or later in the market when they are listed. There are only rare ICO who develops their own product to finish line and release it in the market. Now that's the real deal behind any ICO, "raising funds for project development". However people mistakenly use it for quick rich profits.

Indeed, the average investment of short term is less profitable than the long term. But there are also profitable short term investments while maintaining market activity and also depending on the specifications of the project good or not.

Most people invest in ICOs to sell tokens for higher prices after the ico or to be able to get tokens at the lowest price. Ultimate goal of both is profit.

I also invest for ico to get profit. They always advertsise their tokens with many features but we know many of them are copycats of another coin. We are not still sure what are the real use of these ICOs but as long as it brings money then I'm in.

I've invested in a few, but just like startups I expect 99%+ not to live up to expectations.
I'm a bit picky about fundamentals.

1) Potential for huge gains just like BTC/ETH on the 1% chance it does work out.
2) Easy access and less regulatory hurdle for smaller investors

Other reasons people might:
1) There seems to be a premium to even get in the hot ICOs so you can flip it for a profit on an exchange
2) As long as there is a market where people are buying ICOs at a premium at an exchange it makes sense.
3) A lot of wealthy BTC/ETH holders are hooked on the ICO idea (ETH was the original big ICO).  They're using house money and are less fearful of loss, diversifying holdings and also wanting to support their ecosystem

I have no argue with that. I like this idea, during the crowdsale events invest there and get paid in the specific ICO token. A single success of any ICO returns us decent profit. But, ICOs are full of risks, even some of them can get failed, some of them can turn to scam. These are the worst part of ICO project, must accept all these risk.

ICO can be very beneficial if we choose the right one. There are many new coins which people try to develop nowadays and we have to be very selective if we wanted to invest on some of them. One of the benchmarks I use in determining where I'm going to invest is who's behind the development of the coin. If the person has a good and reliable track record, I will follow it.

The reason anyone invests in ICO is in hopes of getting in early on the next big coin. You are right though that there is currently a massive amount of shit projects that get funded way more than they should realistically need or than they could ever be worth in the real world.
This is why when I see a project has raised a lot of money in the ico I prefer to not invest since there is not going be anyone to buy the coin once it hits the exchanges, you need to look at coins that did not raise as much money or that have a cap in the amount they want to raise.

Invest on ICO can give you profit easily, because at the time of ICO, most projects give percentage bonus to investor from 40% to 10%. After ICOs end, you can sell your coin/token and gain profit. Yes, always do your own research before doing invest due so much ICO ended up being a scam.

Investing in ICO is akin to investing in an IPO for a public listed company in my opinion.
however, the main caveat is the lack of regulatory oversight in an ICO versus an IPO which listed companies have to jump thru hoops and pay investment bankers tons of $$$ to get onto the stock exchanges.
then again, even with all that "big brother" oversight, there are still shell companies out there that basically makes money via raising fund from the capital market and benefiting the founders.

ICO allows us to gain access to startups with a great business idea and hopefully, the founding team carries the project to fruition, who knows you could be funding the next google/facebook of the blockchain world.

however, if you are investing your own money, it is only right your research on the ICO before committing your money. alternatively, you could just spread bet and hope one of your bets hit the jackpot!

the medium for investment is different (coins vs fiat), however, the investment approach should be the same. Research and Diversification.

Invest on ICO can give you profit easily, because at the time of ICO, most projects give percentage bonus to investor from 40% to 10%. After ICOs end, you can sell your coin/token and gain profit. Yes, always do your own research before doing invest due so much ICO ended up being a scam.

That's right about ico and I could not argue about this matters regarding profit,  because the token from the ico generated from funds being raised with the campaign gives you a sustainable amount to fulfill your will from the investments you have. Trading your tokens is the options to reach your goals of holding or direct selling of the tokens you had, since this is one way of getting profit as well with traders who also invested their funds directly buying and selling at the trusted trading sites.

More people engage or invest in ICOs because it's the best time to invest and get a chance to have a coin in a very low price and get a chance also to get a 100% profit from your investment when the coin reaches the highest price.

I join in ICOs to avail of huge bonuses. I prefer to be an early birds to ICOs that I trust and closely followed. Early bonuses are even given as huge as 60%. That is already a huge profit when the token is introduced to the exchange platforms with the ICO price. What if it rises? Another profit.  8)

Well, if the project was very nice and it will good enough in the future I will invest some money and bitcoin to that. In addition to that, investing in ICO will also help you to gain a lot of income. As of now there are lot of ICO that you can invest and you can also avail some promos to that ICO. Lastly, investing in ICO is also one the best to gain a huge amount of money.

Okay, if you believe in the business behind the ICO you will probably invest. 3hrs from Now I am going to invest with the ICO I am wearing from my sig.

Why? Its a game platform with over 1million downloads from the google play. Meaning this would be a successful afterwards. I am going to buy the cheap coins and resell it later to gamers for a higher price.

I don't see anything wrong investing on ICOs. Many people earned money and multiplied their investments on good ICOs. The most important thing there is learn their product by reading or at least scan their whitepaper and take a look at their team if reliable enough.
Trust is the important factor while investing and the team behind the project is more important than any other aspects,i have made some decent amount of money with some of the investments i have made in the past and then there are a few others which did not live up to the expectation and gave some losses.
Well, it is natural that some of the projects that we invest in do not give to us the profits we are looking for, however when you are able to predict right an ICO and you hold, that may be enough to offset all your losses and give you profits that is why despite the losses people keep investing in icos so they find the next big coin.

So I myself didn't invest with ICO,  but I am joining the campaign of thpse previous promising campaigns. Because if we Invest on ICO, ico can give profit so easily. That's the real reason why many people follow ico.
We have a chance to buy at the lowest price and sell it with a high price when it has entered the market.

ICOs does not automatically give you a sure profit when it is on the market. When you are buying an ICO it does not guarantee you that you have bought it in its lowest price the chance of it still going down is big after a big pump. As an ICO investor or trader you must always anticipate and monitor its market cap as you will notice if some kind of fake up trend is going on. I suggest that you always do your own research if you want to invest in some good ICOs

I do not mind a pre ICO if there is a reason for it, like giving previous investors or customers some preference, the thing that really bothers me are the ICOs that give very high bonus to early investors those investors have a huge advantage over regular investors since they are in profit even before the coin hit the exchanges

The reason why I invest in ICOs is only because there is too much risk in bitcoin investments. The higher the value , the higher the risk. The risk is very low in ICO investments, and you might loose or benefit within a short period of time. There is no investors who is interested in loosing their money. Besides, you buy the coins and tokens at a very low value and might sell it at a higher value.

I think investing in bitcoin and investing in ICO has the same risk, but to get big profits with a relatively short time of course ICO has more opportunities to get it, but it certainly requires careful ICO investment research to minimize the risk of loss.

Hi,
this thread I want to ask you: Why do you, if you do, invest in ICOs?
I see horrible huge amounts of money going to those. What do investors think to get in return?
Mostly it's the same case: ICO starts, much money comes in, you get the coins.
That was back then, things are slowly changing because investors are now more careful and prudent in where they investment money
Investors invest in projects that are probable that the investment will payback with an interest

But what if those coins do not get back the initial worth?
Its not going to happen over night it might take years for some projects to reap profits its all about patience
Or do you invest because of other reasons?
Some projects are practical and are aimed at helping people more efficiently with the help of the blockchain technology...which makes such worth investing in

The growth is promised, whether it's short time or long time the ICO price pumping happens once after the distribution of tokens. Another thing is that we can get a good profit if invested in the early days or by the starting week of the token pre-sale, because around 25-50% more token is provided for the invested amount.

I think giving people access to invest in early stage startups is a good thing. We're told that we have to have $10 million in assets in order to invest in such projects - but why? Are we really being protected? I don't trust that the government necessarily has our best interest at heart. Hence, I think ICO's are a GREAT innovation.

I personally invest in ICO projects that contribute legitimate value to the world. Each of us must assess what legitimate value for themselves, and naturally their are risks involved. But precluding retail investors from startups isn't fair, in my opinion.

The one and most probably the only reason people invest in ICOs is MONEY. "What do investors think to get in return?" Money nonetheless. But for me, to be honest, I don't want to invest in ICOs or rather I'm scared of investing 'cause I could probably end up losing all my money. Investing in general is a risks but risks could result in two things it's either you great freaking rich in a period of time or you could lose all your money. So, investing in ICOs really depends on your intentions, whether you’re looking for a quick buck or a long-term investment.

Why invest in ico is definitely due to profit although sometimes there is a loss because ico does not run smoothly, but that includes from the risk of an investment, you must be smart in choosing ico you want to invest. Dev is serious with the his project will give an profits to investors to attract a lot of investors, maybe you must try to participate pre-sale token because the investors will get more profits than dev but the minimum investment is not little.

If you are a newbie you would really think on this kind of thing which you would really ask into your mind regarding on the transparency or legitimacy of the project and as an investor we should really know how to spot a good project and as been said investing on ico are very risky as an investor we wont really know if it would make us profits or even loss because most ico do end mostly on having less price than on its ico price which is really frustrating.

Investing in ICO does not guarantee a profit, sometimes you lose and sometimes you profit, that's how fair it is
but sometimes you gut lucky to make big profit when the ICO you participated will improve their tokens.
By checking on the history of ICOs you can tell it's profitable but the answer is still coming from you because you are the one
who will decide on where and what to invest.

Next time, try to evaluate those new ICO from who the developers behind the project are. This thing really matter a lot and what make a project succesfull, not just random people making nonsense project using word "decentralized", that's really a different thing and just were made to be a money grabber, no more.

I think those who are investing are the ones who do hold a big bag of ETH, so I think that might have happened when many investors pushed ICO really successful

Do you really think that is the reason why most of the people invest into #ICO ? Just because they have wallets filled with #ETH! Lozl thats really laughing thing anyone must have said until now. These ICO are not a joke and they are business really. ICO projects have some important agenda on the basis of which they run and let the market survive on them. They give us big opportunities to earn extra bucks by helping them out with investments that we could afford. We are basically there shareholder so we have a position with ICO officially and everything works professionally with ICO. Its true most of the people think about it in the negative way but they are not as long as people are investing truthfully in them. :-) I invest for best of the ICO to give me huge profits and see myself as part of successful ICO.

Well, the answer to that question is not that simple for everyone. Some people do like to make money on the things that they purchase yet there is a few people that just want to invest in a coin so they can say that they have the coin no matter the whole value of the token.
Investing in something doesn’t always mean that the investors wants money from it, they could have another purpose for it instead of just relying on dollars and other currency to get them rich.
You’re right about most people investing money into something because majority of them want to get rich though.

At the end of the day, there will be some ICOs that should be absolutely avoided. A conservative strategy is 99% of all ICO could be junk. Do your due diligence and learn how to sniff out the 1%. Investors who have bought coins at the ICO price have been rewarded generously by the companies in question In the next year there will be more and more ICO offerings coming out every month as this technology becomes more mainstream, so it will be become more difficult to filter out the riffraff and find the cryptocurrency firms with the most potential.

Yeah this is true. And the people behind some projects don't care if the campaign will succeed or not. As long as they get their salary they are fine with that. That's why many ico starts to be fine and in the end it will turn to scam.

I invested in BitDice ICO, that is my first investment, then I invested in few more ICO`s. Why? I support the idea behind it, casinos are making
their own tokens, that can be very useful. Casino is increasing a bankroll with our investment in tokens, as casino grow, tokens will worth more, not
just casino also trading with this tokens can increase worth of tokens.
Many people do not like ICO`s, I understand why, to many scam coins appeared and it is hard to recognize which one is good, I am also not sure
in this, but I need to try something and my choice was this.

I was investing in ICO's for the money, for a while it felt like guaranteed profits, now there are just too many to keep up with and too many tokens end up being cheaper shortly after they hit exchanges (BNT, SONM...).
Since there's too many ICO it's not impossible that some tokens will lose their value replacing by new ones which are much better, but if such project development were tokens came from and still on development there is stoll chances thay tokens demand once finish can pump. It jwill just take time.

I think investing in ICO projects is risky because we can not verify the origin of the ICO and who is the founder of the project. People invest in ICOs just for high profits and do not care about risky issues
This is only true for projects that are kind of shady, for projects that are serious the developers reveal their identities and you can check their background if you want, also people invest in icos for different reasons and not only for the profits some invest because they believe in the project and want to support it regardless of the profits.

Well I do not invest in ICO's but I am earning that particular coin. Because buying coins during its ico is really not a good choice for me because I am into short term trade. Look at the prices of the coins during its ico. The price of it is usually so high than when its coin will be sent to the known exchanges. And that is only good for the long term. As I've said I am earning those coins here in the forum. By joining signature campaigns and I might be fine.

I usually like to invest in ICOs because they will shoot up in value after they go live, but some of them present a real solution in a good way. Just make sure the team looks good and you're good to go.

1. ICO supports the value of cryptocurrency.

2. ICO introduces all investors to smart contract technology.

3. Active participation in ICO allows you to learn the various benefits of cryptocurrency.

4. Payment transaction in ICO is safe round the clock due to blockchain technology.

5. Most ICO companies have realistic mission to make a difference. Everex is a great example, goo.gl/E2NDF2 (http://goo.gl/E2NDF2) Alexi Lane and his team want to build a quicker and better remittance system worldwide.

6. ICO can be a scam, they say, but it's totally up to you to believe what companies are only fooling you and what companies are for real.

Hi,
this thread I want to ask you: Why do you, if you do, invest in ICOs?
I see horrible huge amounts of money going to those. What do investors think to get in return?
Mostly it's the same case: ICO starts, much money comes in, you get the coins.
But what if those coins do not get back the initial worth?
Or do you invest because of other reasons?

For example (disclaimer: this is NOT hate!):
Why did trueflip.io get over $4,7 Million?

Thank you for answers!

I always think twice before i invest on an ico. If the development is good, the teams are good and the roadmap and the future is good i will invest on it. You must know that if you invest an ico, you can't get profit instant after the ico finish. You must wait until the project doing good and it might takes several months and when it happen the price for each coin will increase.

This is the define normally in history about ICOs crowdsale, but in recently the price of ICOs usually drop down after listed to exchange in short time.
Unless some project spend more time for development before listing to exchange as QTUM. ;)

Because of the early pump and profit. Personally, I dont like to invest in ICO's as most of them are scams or one hit wonders. They just wanna popularize the ICO and take all the money. But there are people who take advantage of it. One of my friends invested on KICKICO in the presale and it got a cool platform for other ventures to do crowd funding. Will see how that goes.

Yes there is lot of ricks. but there is many trustful project out there also. before you invest your money some ICO you better re-check there hole activities.

Agreed, there's lots of potential, but of course there is plenty of negative figures in the community who abuse ICO's and tarnish the view of these.

Hopefully instead of requiring any regulation or auditory bodies stopping these scams, the community does with their wallets. The SEC however has made it very clear that they will be stamping down on these though.

Social.nexus is promising ICOs. The project is live, so the coin will have more value than ICOs with undefined project. There are many ICOs don't have real project. Or the project next in 2019 or 2020. It take to much time to hold the coin. The coin will slowly forgoten and the price will be down.

I am sure there are perfect ICO because in all of the ICOs projects always there are a little weakness must be fixed by developers and comunity in the future even bitcoins its self still has block size problem, we must choose the ICOs just has a little weakness on the projects.

An unregulated means by which funds are raised for a new cryptocurrency venture. An Initial Coin Offering (ICO) is used by startups to bypass the rigorous and regulated capital-raising process required by venture capitalists or banks. In an ICO campaign, a percentage of the cryptocurrency is sold to early backers of the project in exchange for legal tender or other cryptocurrencies, but usually for Bitcoin.

This is an interesting question, due to us having test marketed 2 years in Asian countries on people's awareness and interest in blockchain/crypto industry.

Certainly, most of the people are here for the money (investment opportunity) . There are small number of people who simply believes in the future and are in love with these technology. Even smaller group of people are cherishing them for the faster, cheaper and safer transactions.

As there are countless cryptos now, most of people who are here for the investing purposes are just seeking for the potential market hoping to get larger return from their original investment. Talking of ICOs, if there are 10 projects that you think is legit, you might invest small amount for all of them, instead of investing all in one project being afraid of losing your funds for project failing.

Technology isn't so much important now, how secure it is, how fast it is, which blockchain it uses, etc, for that being replaced by new tech everyday. We believe before all countries start passing serious regulations on ICO industry, the only projects that will really succeed are those who are trying to provide and impact a new concept or entertainment related to our everyday life.
But for now, all the new users to this industry will simply be fascinated by whichever projects and website that they see, so this is indeed unfortunate that many scam project collects funds and just vanish : (

Sounds like an idea for a spinner game:
  • you put some money on deposit
  • spin a wheel with hundreds of ICOs
  • and some part of your money gets invested into randomly picked ICO

Something like this but with different ICOs:

Minexcoin is was one of them but not yet it listed any exchange.I am looking fro a good ICO now.I want to invest there some of my Ethereum. I want to grow my stock of Ethereum.

That is why people are using the purchase the ICO tokens on early sale period itself. If the ICOs value increases good and its market capital value increases then you can more money with the token by holding it for some time or exchange it for eth or bitcoin. Eth based ICO are widely implemented every day so you will find in more here in ann section.

Definitely there are plenty of bad companies, and plenty of scams out there. But this is true everywhere in world. Anytime you're looking to invest into a company, you've got to do your due diligence. Research, research, research. Only you can determine whether or not an ICO is worth your time, or if it's better to simply invest into coins already on the market.

I categorize 3 types of ICO's I'm willing to invest in;

1. Buy and hold. These are my long term investments. Top quality companies, people, product. Something I truly believe in and will be holding long term.
2. Flip and buy the dip. These are good companies, I believe in their people, product, but perhaps they got too hyped for where they are at in their development. Enter into ICO, sell after the first surge, re-buy after the sell-off.
3. Flip. These are companies where I believe the hype has far outpaced their development. The most dangerous of the ICO strategies, it's my least favorite. Essentially investing in their ability to hype the product long enough for you to flip the ICO coins.

That's why I go into ICOs! But of course people will have a million reasons why they want to invest in one project or another.

Because ICOs are great way to make profit if you experienced enough to know which ICOs have high potential. ICOs with good team behind it will end up in a very good spot most of the time so make good research about them before you invest in. If you invest in the right ICO you can easily double your investment and i think that's a good reason to invest in a ICO.  ;)

as i read more and more in the forum its all about hope that it get a price bump then sell, not to support the project,  for the ico team this is good cause anyhow they get the money to fund the proyect regardless of the investor intention.

that why is easy to do ico scam so the major problem for real icos is to get the more proof of the service that will bring in to the real world.

that is why our ico will be launch with a working version of the service.

I invested in an ICO a long time ago (in march) and i lost almost $300 in that project, then i have never put a single cent in any other ico.
But the one who is in my signature is a promising one, i am looking for buying some tokens from there, i am not doing any advertisement, it is just that i like their whitepaper and their website.

The problem is that people made big money on cryptos and throw it on ICOs like the salt bae. It creates an economic bubble, while it even attracts ordinary people to invest.

ICO can be a huge profit if you do your research carefully. For example, if you bought neo at the ico a year back, you can gain from $1k to $300,000. Another great example is ethereum, a $1000 can make you $3000000. Even if you want to consider something that is more recent, we can look into OMG where $0.10 ico a few months ago, it is now around $10. That is like 100x. So a $1000 become $100000. So the issue is how can you spot potential ico and not those useless ico.

ICO can give you huge profits if you have invested in a right one and at a right time as price can go much higher after the coins are listed on the trading sites but you should do a good research before getting into it or else you may end up loosing everything.

Without bubbles, how are the slowpokes like me going to find a good entry point anyway, right? Bubbles are the opportunities for people who really only have a few hours a week to really look into "investments". I don't have the patience or discipline to do day trading. Part of the reason for ICOs to me, other than simple profit making, is also that people have too much crypto they can't immediately convert. How else than to magically make businesses that make more crypto, right?

The majority of the general population put resources into ICO in light of the fact that they need to acquire cash, or they trust that the ICO can wind up noticeably enormous later on, a large portion of the ICO are not that productive and the vast majority of them even turn out as trick, however in the event that you pick the privilege ICO it can be exceptionally beneficial. The main motivation behind why individuals put cash on ICO's in any case was a result of cash. On the off chance that you ask somebody who contributed on an ICO and says that his purpose behind putting resources into a specific ICO is on account of he needs to help that specific undertaking, reconsider. For what reason would individuals truly contribute on ICO's and search for a decent one? The main answer is that they need to benefit from it and in view of the conceivable pick up, they go out on a limb. On the off chance that an individual like a venture and on the off chance that they see a decent potential they don't put the greater part of the cash in ICO.

To define all this maybe we should look for the background of the project and maybe we shouldn't hold there tokens for more longer days since ICO coins are not mean't to be holded unlike bitcoins since the some of the developer are just hyping and manipulating for their own gains.

Many people make money and people invest in good ICO. The most important thing is to find out their product by reading or at least scanning their magazine. Do you think that a shit ICO would allow to run here and scam many people without user detective did not notice them? You have to be kidding. There are many well-known detective users here who are experts on ICO malicious exploits. It is to make a huge profit.

I think people are looking for the next bitcoin, and if they manage to stumble on it at it's inception they will become vastly rich. Of course there are is a big risk but also a big reward if it pays off.

Investing into ICO's were a good way to multiply the investment. Ico most of the time after pre-sale while getting listed to the exchanges, initial circulation as well price increase happens on the inflow. Based on this one can easily profit big comparatively and very few declines in value.

usually people invest in ICOs looking for quick profit but after some high funded ICOs failed . so i think better to buy after icos released to public .

If i like a project and if i see a good potential i dont invest all of the money in ico.
I invest half of my money in ico time, and i keep second half for the time it is listed.

i agree with you have a briiliant decision because you need to allocate your half money to the daily expenses for the family nedds, investing in ICO are not bad but you need to be carefull and investigate the ICO want you to join to pretect you money, try this to invest in electroneum.

As more and more ICO projects are launched, such widespread occurrences lead to reduced quality and potential of ICO projects, many of which are fraudulent ICO. This makes people doubt it. However, many people still invest in ICOs, many ICO projects have the amount of investment is up to millions of dollars because they are trusted, such projects are often very clear, transparent, sufficiently large, how statistics, how they operate and how they manage the project. What the investor receives is the profit from investing in their project. I think so. There have been some decisions about banning ICO as well as limiting it, people should learn and calculate thoroughly before deciding to invest in ICO.

well if you actually want to invest in an ICO it is important first of all to find a project that is interesting, innovating, useful and which you believe in. If you're looking to make quick money invest in an ICO or presale that causes a craze and then sell as soon as they appear on an exchange :)

Hi,
this thread I want to ask you: Why do you, if you do, invest in ICOs?
I see horrible huge amounts of money going to those. What do investors think to get in return?
Mostly it's the same case: ICO starts, much money comes in, you get the coins.
But what if those coins do not get back the initial worth?
Or do you invest because of other reasons?

For example (disclaimer: this is NOT hate!):
Why did trueflip.io get over $4,7 Million?

Thank you for answers!

Because I have faith in that certain ICO that it would be a good invest specially in long term and would yoeld decent profit for me in the future.

I think they are investing for a good project. not just choose the project to be invested. they first learn the project. if it feels good enough, then they invest. Yes they are investing to make a profit from the money invested. But if you only have a little capital, you will also get a little profit. that's my opinion.

Sometimes ICOs are really cheap. Like <0.1$ per coin. And if the project seems interesting, the team behind it is competent and they have a chance for success. You don't want to miss this chance from 0.1$ to go at 10$ for example. It's mostly a high risk high reward system.

I invest in ICOs only to make profit from my investment. I only invest in ICOs that I have read about and understood what their technology is all about. Once I am certain, I give it a shot.

You have to understand that profit goes along with risk, in every investment there is risk involved. I usually buy in early so that I can get bonuses as well.

We invest in those projects that we see some potential in the future to earn more and more money through ICO's. We only need smaller capital but in my case I did not invested my money on ICO's just my time to earn tokens. I invested my time through signature bounties in exchange of tokens so if the project is a scam I lost only my time not my money. My only reason to invest is to have all the value per tokens multiplied by 10 or up but sometimes we fail in this expectations so beware.I know that all of us want to have a bigger return than our investments so we have to learn to let go in every failures and find new hope.

Why do you, if you do, invest in ICOs?

I believe that ICOs are changing the way companies get funded forever. It's a way for early-stage companies to raise capital without the gatekeepers, constraints, and manipulations of traditional markets. ICO's are going to be a huge part of the democratization of traditionally elite industries like Venture Capital.

Early stage companies are about as high risk/high reward as you can get. ICO's offer this opportunity directly to the general public instead of just a few wealthy investors that supply VC's with capital.

With that said, only a small % of ICO's will be massive industry leaders, and many are little more than scams. That's why due diligence is extremely important in this space.

My main reason is to try to get hold until a nice profit is made, some coins like storjx (old storj) rlc, firstblood, profit was/is low, but others like particle (old name shadowcash) , taas, waves.
They have been giving me nice returns :)

And no, i realy dont try to understand mutch about the reasons of the ico itself, but i do read the whitepapers and if found interesting will invest

i dont usually invest in ico but i guess the reason why they invest is because they want to buy the tokens cheap , because being an early investors gives you a lot of privillages and bonus but after that they would just dump the coin and earn profit. yet investing in ico's are pretty risky because i see these days there are many ico"s popping like a mushroom and like to scam people, id rather invest in bitcoin or altcoin than taking a risk.

I have only been able to get in on 3 or 4 ICOs.  Many of them I am priced out of the market as they want a minimum of 1 Ether etc to join. The ones I did particapte in allowed minimum of 0.1 Ether.  needless to say all the ones I bought into tanked as soon as they got to an exchange.  I have only lost money.  I find they are actually cheaper if you just wait - and buy once they are on an exchange - as I only have small amounts to invest.

To me i personally like to invest money in different ICOs because ICOs are usually giving you some extra money, that you usually cannot get from exchanges, Here from ICOs you get some bonuses and some time even get some extra currency, therefore ICOs are more profitable, but i think selection of ICO for investment is not an easy job, you need to get good information about the ICOs and only then you can take a step and can invest money in ICOs.

People invest in an ICO to have more money , to earn more money , because when you invest in an ICO early you will be given a bonus,. Investing in different ICO is too risky , if you don't know what will happen to your money in return , some are scams and some have failed. And investing in an ICO needs a lot of money to earn more profit in it.

All investors always want to get big profit and ICOs is a chance. Of course have many altcoin price is down after ICOs end but if a good project then it will soon get back the initial worth even increase fast to generate a big profit for investor ( ex: NEO)

I think most of the people are investing in ICO so that they can gain more rather than base solely on the growth of bitcoin. Since bitcoin has grew to such a huge price now, the percentage growth of bitcoin will become more limited whereas potential ICO still have a lot of room for growth. Just like eth, it has x1000 to 300usd.

I can't say for others. I look at ICO like any other fund raising exercise. And, my objective is always to support ICOs / ideas if they seem interesting to me. I also go through review of ICOs before investing on them. And I don't invest in a lot of them

I like to invest in coins when I notice something that is pretty cool in the software that a project releases. Bitcoin is one of the things that allowed me to participate in the project.

ICOs, also known as crowd sales, are a new way of financing for startups in the block chain space that involves issuing a new digital currency or token to early backers of the project in exchange for bitcoin, fiat currency or other established digital currencies.

Because ICOs are most profitable investment ever  :)

they are if you get in on the pre-sale.  you can buy the tokens at a guaranteed low value.  then wait for it to rise on etherdelta, then start dumpin'.  every over-hyped ICO follows a predictable pattern, where you know the price will rise right at the beginning, then usually decline slowly.  sometimes to sub-ICO prices.  the people who can get in on the presale take advantage of the certainty of it, and make a quick flip.

For me investing in ICO is a gamble, a risk you are willing to handle.  I personally joined some ICO because I believe the project will be worth it and believing that the coins I received from the team as an exchange from the money I invest in will have high gains.  People who are not willing to gamble should stay away from this because some projects may not turn out the way as expected but if the project boom then you can have more profits of multiple folds.  Cryptocurrencies are not for faint of hearts.

ICO for me is an investment food that I can considered, Because there are some ICO project would really help you anyhow to grow your capital investment. Just make sure that token has a good potentials has promising plan to their project. Due to I've been tried it several time to invest in the ICO crowdsale or pre-sales ICO.

Precisely, its a gamble in a way that you have to risk your money to invest to an ICO without any assurance if the project will be successful or not. Its mainly the reason why I never tried investing on ICO but im not closing my doors though because i can see now that there are a lot of promising ICO's that are legit.

I see it as people trying to be first, so that they have the chance of getting ridiculous profits. In most of the cases this is not going to happen, but for some it will. A problem is that the cases people hear about are the coins that do well, and then when they're trying to make a decision about going into a ICO or not this is what they recall. This is simply because of the way our brain works, and there are many psychological reasons that make ICO's look great.

Title: Re: Why do you invest in ICOs?

The only reason why people invest money on ICO's in the first place was because of money. If you ask someone who invested on an ICO and says that his reason for investing in a particular ICO is because he wants to support that particular project, think again. Why would people really invest on ICO's and look for a good one? The only answer is that they want to profit from it and because of the possible gain, they take risk.

A fast profits always has a high risk in same time. You can have profits if you can sell your token at highest price after listed on exchange, but then you will be loser if you can not sell your tokens before others took profits.

Every one invest to make profit. I do not understand what is the meaning of this question, where you already know the answer. Now If any one tells that he invests cause he loves any project, LOLZ. no one even knows what will be happened.

My first try was just to get more ethereum after the tokens gets on exchangers, firstly etherdelta. That was the main concentration for me, then I saw that the idea of getting more ether by sellin ICO tokens didn't work for me. We saw lots of dump waves and these all hurted me. I stopped buying ICO tokens, and I gave myself a promise for this reason. They're loss of money and time generally from now on, except nice ones.

Because the potential investment return is higher compared to established coins. The risk is also higher when investing in ICOs and they require a lot more effort to evaluate each ICO project than just focusing on Bitcoin.

Based on data there is a huge return of investment in an ICO if you hold your coins for a long time rather than holding famous alts and bitcoins due to the fact that bonuses are given in every stages of an ICO but it takes a careful study and analyses to make sure you are investing in a good ICO.

You invest in anything because you believe there is a decent return later on. You do not simply invest into something that you yourself are doubting whether it will prosper or not. The same is true with ICOs. I invest in ICOs because I believe I can make money out of it. But I am very serious when it comes to sifting the potential ICOs I will be investing. Trueflip for example is a good project. Do you know how much is their jackpot? It is more than 400 BTC right now. Who would not try out their luck with that very huge amount of winning?

Title: Re: Why do you invest in ICOs?

I invested in a couple of ICO's because I can take that risk if something goes wrong I lose my investment and on other side, rewards can be much bigger than if you invest in already established coins/tokens. Startup companies use ICO to raise capital to start, and there is a risk many things can go wrong and also there will be few projects aimed at fraud because initial coin offering is not regulated by law.

We and other participants invest in ICO with a reasons. Which is, we believe that a specific coin might do as much like bitcoin or might be close enough to what bitcoin does to its early investors and holders. If an altcoin is successful, it might produce huge amount of profit gain which is our target and should be your target for investment.

There are some people who see ICOs as a way to make a quick profit. Well, I can agree with It, but at the same time I can't.  Before investing in an ICO project, you have to be very sure about the project.

You should do your own due diligence, investigate the viability of the project and the team behind it. You also have to consider if indeed the project requires its own token to work or if it can work of an already existing token system.

AND THE MOST IMPORTANT thing to consider is to NOT invest money you cannot afford to lose due to the risk involved.

Then also I want to follow the trend now, because many investor and spekulan jump into Crypto. I invest in ICOs for the same reason I invest in anything--because I think I can identify valuable projects, and by supporting them, I can gain some small benefit for myself.

Several reasons:

  • Because I value the profit that the project brings me
  • Because I value the benefit that the project brings society
  • Because I value the service / product that the company will provide me with if successful

But I personally haven't invested in any ICO except for the Envion one. I'm holding out for better legal situations and less predatory dynamics.

I believe ICOs are a great investment, you just have to find the right ones to invest in. Some ICOs give a great return on investment and some do not. What sets them apart is their plan and the business backing the coin. This is why you have to do your research before investing, so you can reduce the possibility of making a careless investment.

If I invest and ico the first thing I think is that it will make me profitable after putting in a little capital but maybe it will be risky it will cost me money for me. 50:50 and if I'm lucky I'll get 5 or 10 times the profit but it could be lost. Between the choice of losing 1 and getting 10 I would venture out

Now there are fewer and fewer good ICOs. Now we have to carefully study the product and the team. Very big competition. Well, the upcoming bitcoin bitcoin. In short, not the best time to participate in the ICO, in my opinion.

I invest in ico by joining the bounty campaign since I do not have much money to buy the ico tokens, also I think this is a good way to keep in touch with the project and know much detail information and discussion about it.

That's a nice idea of joining the bounty campaign while you don't have that amount of money, and its a good way of making profit because you can have the chance of earning bounty tokens which you can sell in trading site in the future. By that idea your earnings in the future will be used for possible investments that you are going to join with, and there's a lot more promising ICO's to come so you could invest and earn bigger profits compared from the bounties given to you.

I never been tried investing in any ICO's but I believe that this question is having very simple answer. Why do you invest in ICO's? Well, simply because people want to gain profit or to have an extra income. Aside from getting fun, I do believe that this is the very main reason why investing on it. If I am wrong then can you tell me why? Is there any main reason  why do people invest on it?

Nowadays I rarely participate in ICOs, because in 95% of cases tokens price fall below ICO after it hits the market. Recently I've bought several tokens just as a long term investment, but now I'm disappointed since I could have bought them cheaper on the market.

I too have a similar approach. Previously, I have request rank as one of the top ICO to invest in. I even have 2 whitelist. However, on the day itself, after observing for a period of time, i ended up not buying any. Right now, a lot of focus is on the upcoming btc fork.

I like some of the new technology and ideas that are coming so wish to support these kind of innovative and unique projects. Of course as a small investor i would like to increase my bottom line, I will not ie about that. In the end we all want to invest to procure a profit and it would be silly to think that we invest to want to lose. No one wishes to lose in this game. I still consider though crypto investing as high risk but could be high reward also.

ICO's can be a great investment if you choose the right one at the right time ofcourse! Making an investment in a good ICO, could be very profitable or it could fail dramatically leaving you peniless, it works both ways. Thats why it's recommended you do research into the ICO, checking whitepapers, websites if any and look into the team behind the project.

I only go for functional tokens, not one more cryptocurrency. I suppose that if there were a new crypto that seriously outperformed bitcoin it would be worth it, but not really.

Realistically, most coins drop in value right after the ICO. But they can go back up in value when they have an actual function.

We blindly cant say that all ICO's are risk as we all know if no risk no gain also so we have choose the right one with lot of analyze then we can avoid loses so it is up to us only how much risk it is.

in fact not everyone is willing to directly invest in an ico, but they are very confident that the value will return after the ico because of the knowledge or detailed information so that people believe in ico and the investors just choose a very good project to do especially on treading.

Everyone is interested in profit. Profit is for the half % of people something that drives them to invest large sums of money. ICOs are representing the opportunity for people to gain profit based on risk. We all know nothing is certain when we invest but with good readiness and knowledge, we can earn good money. The system is based on different chains than "beloved and mighty BTC" and because of that some people don't invest here - They are faithful to the BTC. ICOs are representing probability for possible profit and that drives common folks toward investing in it.

ICO is a good kind of investment. It likes Stock market, where investors can get profit and entrepreneurs can mobilize capital. You can find some ICOs to try, you will understand clearly.

potentially can have big returns if the project is good and the team can deliver
but there is always the posibility of failing so don't put in an ICO anything more than what you want to lose

the potential of ICO's is just huge. Just think about it. First we had the public companies, that most of the population can't invest in (their PRESALEs are usually conducted by insiders, big banks, who profit the most when launching an IPO) and even after the presale, the way to invest into public companies is to give all your documentation and idendity cards in order to buy a couple of shares, you're getting taxed and the broker fees are ripping you off. Now with ICO's anyone has the chance to join the fun and it's much easier to invest in what you believe in and potentially increase your investment, because the market is yet small and low capitalized, which means little money flowing in can fluctuate your portfolio to a couple thousand percent.

Sometimes I buy a few tokens during ico to support the product, so actually like on kickstarter.
It is not easy to find a promising ico where you can invest a big amount. Especially now when there are dozens icos each day.

If you really know what ICO are then you understand in my opinion that are the future of economy and not the null value cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin.
ICOs are real projects and the tokens of them are like shares. If you buy tokens of a good ICO then you invest to real project and not wasted hardware and electric energy.

If i like a project and if i see a good potential i dont invest all of the money in ico.
I invest half of my money in ico time, and i keep second half for the time it is listed.

I’m assuming in order to test out the market and double down on profits if there’s initial interest? I like some more than others depending on the speculative value of an individual project. Some projects I’ve come across I can’t understand their white paper becuase it focuses exclusively on a computer related jargon language which isn’t helpful to 99.99% of clients. Other projects I’ve read, I see a fine concept, but the explaination and strategy behind the concept is too weak for it to speculatively profit. At the same time, there is a project that I simply like and the strategy behind it isn’t necessarily finished — it’s sort of a time will tell how the strategy will grow and if partners will come aboard, yet the concept fits into a marketplace void of that specific need.

Why would it be anything other than money? Unless you mean that you're trying to support a "worthy cause" or trying to build something of importance without focusing on the monetary value?
