Post by: bitshy on May 22, 2013, 07:53:16 PM
Come play Satoshi Buckets (http://satoshibuckets.bitshy.org), a game with a winning strategy! Here's the rules:

  • Put your coins in a bucket. Minimum bet is ฿0.005.
  • Every round one bucket falls, if all buckets have at least ฿0.05.
  • The coins in that bucket are distributed among the backers of the other buckets.
  • The buckets that did not fall continue into the next round.
  • Winning buckets can keep winning over and over again!
  • GIVEAWAY: Every day until June 27, one random backer will get ฿0.1!

Just a heads up. I changed the minimum amount per round requirement. Now it's only necessary for there to be ฿0.01 in each bucket for a round to be triggered on new block. This means that, at this exact moment, anyone betting on the green bucket has an expected payout of 120%.

This is kind of neat. No idea if its going to get much attention but I'll send .01 to try it out shortly  ;D

How do the "payout" numbers work? its a bit confusing...

How do the "payout" numbers work? its a bit confusing...

Thanks for the feedback! I will try to include an explanation on the page.

Here is what the numbers mean. Each payout is a number "x1.1" or "x0.9" or something. You multiply this number by how many Bitcoins you spent. So if you spent "0.01 BTC", a payout of "x1.1" means a payout of "0.011 BTC". Now let me explain what the various payout numbers mean:

  • Payout 42% - This is the immediate payout (i.e. this single round's payout) if the red bucket falls (42% chance).
  • Payout 33% - This is the immediate payout (i.e. this single round's payout) if the green bucket falls (33% chance).
  • Payout 25% - This is the immediate payout (i.e. this single round's payout) if the blue bucket falls (25% chance).
  • Short-Term - This is the average immediate payout, taking into account all 3 payouts above.
  • Long-Term - This is the average payout after an indefinite number of rounds. This is calculated via simulation. In this simulation, the value in a fallen bucket is replaced by a minimum bet.
  • Optimistic - This is like Long-Term, but instead of replacing fallen buckets with the minimum bet, we are keeping them the same value. This means we get a larger expected payout. ... But you have to be a little bit optimistic.

I removed the payout percentage numbers. Is this less confusing?

Thanks! That would be nice. More people playing it means there is a bit more strategy, too. I'm a fan of games that aren't just pure chance!

Satoshi Buckets has passed the ten round mark! In the last ten rounds:

  • Red won 5 times, with ฿0.10 = $12.91 received total.
  • Green won 8 times, with ฿0.121 = $14.75 received total.
  • Blue won 7 times, with ฿0.071 = $8.65 received total.

You should add a history of previous bucket falls on the game webpage, and perhaps estimate of when the next round will decide(assuming all buckets are funded).

from satoshibuckets.bitshy.org:  "A round is triggered every time a new block is mined, as long as each bucket has at least ฿0.01. The bucket that falls depends on the last two hex digits of the mined block: if c0 or higher, the blue bucket falls (probability 64/256); if between 6b and bf, the green bucket falls (probability 85/256); if 6a or lower, the red bucket falls (probability 107/256). Only confirmed transactions over ฿0.01 are part of the round. When a bucket falls: 0.5% of its value is returned to its backers (to signal the fallen bucket), 3% of its value is donated to Bitshy Productions, a transaction fee is paid, and then the remaining value is split in half. Each half is divided equally among the supporters of the other two buckets"

Maybe it would be easier if you change the avg. payouts number to the estimated expected value amount for a .01 bet and/or other various bet amounts placed on that bucket(estimated since future bets could alter it).

edit.

Thanks for the feedback! I do want to add a history, soon.

As for next round estimate, I'm afraid it is not quite possible: at any given moment the estimated next round time is around 10 minutes away (when difficulty is adjusted). However, I could do something similar to vanity miner: give the current probability that a round will have already triggered, and tell you when the probability reaches certain milestones (50%, 75%, 90%, etc). For example, "Round probability: 52% (75% in 3 minutes)."

Ok, what if you have a timer.  After all the buckets receive at least 1 bet, a 15 minute timer starts.  When timer reaches 0, then the next block decides.  That would allow the pots to get larger, and players will have a better chance of knowing whether or not their bet will make it in a given round.

I can confirm that block 0000000000000063db17bc3c0d4dcb6b5fd0ba2d0bc0a50fe826f61b6e5e3e83 (http://blockchain.info/block-index/385654/0000000000000063db17bc3c0d4dcb6b5fd0ba2d0bc0a50fe826f61b6e5e3e83) was accidentally skipped. I was restarting and fixing the Satoshi Buckets daemon when a block fell through. Fortunately the next block, 000000000000013befd159d14fa549c52d5e9dbc1596e0ed254e742b31b4e38c (http://blockchain.info/block-index/385655/000000000000013befd159d14fa549c52d5e9dbc1596e0ed254e742b31b4e38c) falls in the same range, so nothing was affected.

Full disclosure: The design for Satoshi Buckets is provably fair, unless some block is missed. I, the administrator, could theoretically have set up the server so that I decide which blocks are acted on, and which ones are missed, in order to manipulate which buckets fall. I don't do this, and I won't do this, and I don't have time to engage in such actions when there are real features to implement and other software to write.

The only way to make Satoshi Buckets completely provably fair is to make it go back and check every block that has happened. This feature is a little bit beyond my capabilities right now. So to mitigate the possibility for abuse, I will try to keep Satoshi Buckets from missing any blocks, and I make the following pledge: From now on, if I ever add money to any bucket, I will add the same amount of money to all the buckets. (As a donation to players, and to keep the rounds coming.) This way there is no incentive for me to manipulate the buckets (which I won't do, either).

Bug in calculating transaction fees caused blue bucket not to fall on block 00000000000001245368c5bd7af28e67a97dff2ad001e895d816d862a98103e1 (http://blockchain.info/block-index/385670/00000000000001245368c5bd7af28e67a97dff2ad001e895d816d862a98103e1). Instead, red bucket fell on the next block. Bug has been fixed, and a reimbursement has been issued to the lone backer of the red bucket: 19SkgDGkD7GGcCtLMxQzToHBJm37fcBLLE (http://blockchain.info/address/19SkgDGkD7GGcCtLMxQzToHBJm37fcBLLE).

I added a round timer! Also, history is now available (if you want it) at /live/history.csv (http://satoshibuckets.bitshy.org/live/history.csv). I'll figure out a way to incorporate this into the web page, later.

Everytime I press F5 it just starts from 5:00 again.

Everytime I press F5 it just starts from 5:00 again.

That is by design. The clock only measures how likely it is that a block will have fallen since you started waiting. If you refresh the page, it counts as if you've started waiting again. This is because a round will happen with the same probability at any given time -- the probability doesn't go up over time, only the cumulative probability.

By the way, you shouldn't need to press F5, ever. Satoshi Buckets updates the page automatically.

I think there is a slight bug in the clock code, but that isn't quite it!

Interesting game.
I think there are still some kinks to work out.  Like right now green bucket shows 0.02, which fell about 4 blocks ago according to the history file.  The history file shows subsequent blocks to be no play because green bucket is 0 according to the file.
It showed 0.02 before the green fall (on screen) but paid out like 0.01 just like it represented in history file. (I had/have the red bucket paid in)
Seems like the screen refresh is behind but the history file is probably accurate.
Interesting that when you add to the bucket though the screen shows it almost instantly.  FYI I don't see any pending transactions for the green bucket to account for the 0.02 on screen.
Keep up the good times with bitcoin!

Hi BitDonkey! Thanks for the feedback!

The totals shown on the website are for both confirmed and unconfirmed transactions (in order to give good up-to-date estimates on each bucket payout). When deciding how buckets actually pay out, only confirmed transactions are counted. (Otherwise the Satoshi Buckets would be vulnerable to a "man-in-the-middle" style attack, or even a double spend attack.)

This brings us to the green bucket. There is one unconfirmed transaction that has been messing with the green bucket's totals on the website all day long: b00ea9d1b3ba00c593ae1f76e6c522b699044834468e59c37d6dc348c919f903 (http://blockchain.info/tx/b00ea9d1b3ba00c593ae1f76e6c522b699044834468e59c37d6dc348c919f903). This transaction hasn't been confirmed yet because the "transactor" didn't pay any transaction fee. From an administrative standpoint, there's little I can do (other than ignore every such transaction manually) since bitcoind doesn't tell me which transactions have paid transaction fees. However, there is a good incentive not to use transactions without transaction fees: it will take forever to be confirmed. Hopefully such transactions will not be common, or I will definitely figure out a way to ignore such transactions on the website.

Im loving this game, the only problem I have is I cant tell if I still have money in the bucket. I think I give enough time but Im sure I bet on multiple buckets a few times. Hi i3lome! Great to hear you're enjoying the game! There's one way to see if your transactions are still in the buckets: click on the buckets to be taken to a list of transactions done to or done by the buckets. You can use this to check if your address is still in the running. Another way is to see if you've received 0.0005 for every 0.01 bet you made.

I would be super happy if you advertised the game in your signature! The game becomes more interesting if more people play it!

Hi i3lome. I went and checked and it seems you have tripped into a bug! Playing in multiple buckets in a single transaction had a weird interaction. I fixed the bug now. If you look at these transactions (http://blockchain.info/address/1RbucktdB7agZuX1qdjce4PYbURRaezc7), you'll see that the green bucket is returning money to the red bucket, rather than its backer (you, I presume). So I will reimburse you for the money you should have won in that time: 0.007. I'll bump that up to 0.01 as a sort of apology. Sorry. :-(

On the other hand, it seems you have also had a spat of bad luck. :-(

EDIT: Reimbursement sent. (https://blockchain.info/tx/dbf8b431b90885594c588f1ac9aa0d1e12135eeaa0b19ed55823f7579c9b61ea)

Satoshi Buckets has been up and running for over 10 days! I haven't done any development for it in the last several days, and I'm going to perform only very minor updates in the next two weeks -- real life is taking over for now. I will still check the forums often!

When I come back, I will add a history tab to the page! Meanwhile, you can check the history by downloading the raw history file (http://satoshibuckets.bitshy.org/live/history.csv) directly, or by clicking on each bucket to see the bucket's history.

If you have any further comments or suggestions, let me know here or via PM!

Do we actually get to watch the buckets fall? Sadly I've watched for a few hours sporadically but haven't seen it during the round-finish stage, :(.

PROMOTION: The house cut has been reduced to 0.5% until June 9!

Sorry, but there isn't a falling animation. :-/

I also made a first reddit post (http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/1figzu/satoshi_buckets_a_strategic_bitcoin_betting_game/) for Satoshi Buckets! If you want more people to come play, I suggest going in there and letting them know your thoughts!

I should mention that Chainsaw had the idea of reducing the cut. He suggested I get rid of the cut for a week. The 0.5% cut is as close as I can reasonably get to 0%, in order to make up for the server costs. Chainsaw also suggested I reduce the cut to 1% permanently. I think I might do that, depending on how much turnout we get from the Promotion.

What are your thoughts?

Here's my 2 BTC:

1) Needs more falling animations, :p. Maybe it's just me, but I think being able to visualize what's happening (as opposed to a refresh that just updates numbers) is a good thing. Not sure how doable that is though...

2) The cut... 1% isn't bad, although I think I have a better way of handling it (although again I don't know feasibility about this either):

So my idea is to do two things: allow cheaper bets and reduce fees by decreasing payments that are going back and forth. To do this, you run an account system. The deposits you make go into the account. From here it doesn't matter if you want to put in 0.01 BTC or 0.000001 BTC since all the code is doing is handling the deduction/addition. The 0.01 BTC could be the "minimum deposit" and then you could have a withdrawal minimum or just charge the fees on that.

Now, this brings up two new concerns: security and trustworthiness (but honestly I wouldn't be so worried about the trust part. If I'm already sending 50 BTC it's not really relevant whether you're holding it temporarily or in an account, since either way I'd still be trusting you to send it back).

The decrease in transactions cuts down your paid transaction fees, and allowing people to do the smaller bets would make some more secure I think.

2) I really like the idea of accounts. It would reduce the back and forth transaction fees, making it nearly costless to play. I'll have to think about it. I won't implement anything like this in the near future, however: it's a lot of work, and I have to focus on real life stuff right now. But I'll revisit the idea in some 15 days. There are a lot of cool things that could be done with accounts. But again, it's a new layer of complexity on an otherwise fairly simple game.

Definitely. There are some people that like the prospect of playing without an account, but (at least for me) having the extra freedom makes it well worth having one. The account could even be as simple as using just your payment address and a password, so no usernames or anything are being given.

I hope everything goes well that you're dealing with in RL, as I look forward to seeing what you transform this game into, :).

Off-chain Transaction PLEASE. The transaction fee is much a burden for us with these kinds of micro betting. By the way, no one wants to spam the chain and pay for those crazy fees right?.

Hey folks! It's time for an experiment!

I've raised the minimum amount in each bucket per round to 0.02 BTC. This is an attempt to reduce the amount of money that is chewed up in Bitcoin transaction fees. This should also raise the expected value of all the current buckets!

Title: Re: Satoshi Buckets - A new kind of Bitcoin game! HOUSE CUT ONLY 0.5% until June 9.

To clarify: the minimum bet is still 0.01 BTC, but no bucket will fall until all buckets have at least 0.02 BTC.

Ah, thanks for clarifying! I inferred it as being that the minimum bet was 0.02, and I was thinking that would cut down on the number of players as a result.

All buckets are over threshold but not falling?!?!?!

They only fall when a block is hit (at least is my understanding). So the timer at the bottom is how long it waits before checking for a new block. If one has hit, it uses the hash to figure out which bucket to tip. If it hasn't, the timer will go again.

Title: Re: Satoshi Buckets - A new kind of Bitcoin game! HOUSE CUT ONLY 0.5% until June 9.
Post by: bitshy on June 07, 2013, 01:54:30 PM
There are two reasons why a bucket will not fall immediately when the threshold (0.02 BTC in each bucket) is hit:

  • Rounds only occur when a bitcoin block has been mined. This happens every 10 minutes on average, but there is no way to control when it will happen exactly. The timer at the bottom of the screen tells you the probability that a block has been mined at a given time.
  • Only confirmed transactions are part of the round. This means that if a transaction takes a long time to confirm but it was just enough to bring the buckets above the threshold, the buckets will still technically be below the threshold. Only when the transaction is confirmed will they be above the threshold.

But the value doesn't get updated (was before 0.01 and is 0.01)
Please fix that or give me a refund.

Edit: I see, only 0.02 of the 0.03 coins were taken on the last drop. Maybe the error hides there.

Hi macros! Thanks for letting me know! The issue should be fixed now. Here's what happened: bitcoind crashed. As a result, the server wasn't updating the bucket values, nor were any buckets falling. It's all up and running again now.

I did a more in-depth analysis of the bucket history. Here's what I extracted.

Mean payouts:

  • R: x1.05207502692
  • G: x0.843458794071
  • B: x1.13571379612

One-round winnings:

  • R: x0.868529463366
  • G: x0.680212456483
  • B: x0.387926613817

Long-term winnings:

  • R: x1.21928174665
  • G: x1.12886322565
  • B: x1.47710518338

Explanation:

  • Mean payouts: The overall expected value of spending 1 BTC indiscriminately on a given bucket. That is, without any kind of strategy, other than "always bet on a particular bucket".
  • One-round winnings: The overall expected value of winning a single round, immediately.
  • Long-term winnings: The overall expected value of winning a single round, after many rounds -- with optimism.

I think it's interesting that a game with simple rules results in so much unknown behavior. I think it's also interesting that the green bucket has been losing so much lately. You'd expect it to always be somewhere in the middle!

That way they get hooked like the rest of us. Im still loving this game, I have better luck with this than any other game

I already do something similar. :-) A "bonus round" is a round where the money comes not from the fallen bucket, but from elsewhere. The "fallen bucket" stays where it is (it doesn't fall), and the money comes out of my pocket instead! There's been two bonus rounds so far!

This was not on purpose, however, which is why I didn't publicize it. It would happen spontaneously, as a result of relying on the simpler bitcoind interface. Now I have a lot more control over how transactions are built, so "bonus rounds" don't just happen anymore.

I think I will try to do some "bonuses" on purpose -- but they'll have to be randomized. (And I have very little money, so this kind of promotion can't happen very often!)

That's good to know. A bonus is really not necessary seeing how you always make something if you pick the right bucket.

Is it possible to do a litecoin buckets, or how much would you charge to make me a LTC version. I don't even know where to begin to code a site like yours. If interested just let me know, also Id have no problem sending you a percentage from all transactions with LTC buckets.  Im poor as shit so anything helps out and Id want to make sure you get paid good for efforts

EXPERIMENT TIME!

The last experiment was a success. (Increasing the minimum round amount to ฿0.02.)

So now we're going to try something a little further out:

  • Reduced the minimum bet to ฿0.005. (Was ฿0.01.)
  • Increased the minimum round amount to ฿0.025. (Was ฿0.02.)

Let's see how this works out!

The rationale behind this experiment is that it allows people to try out Satoshi Buckets with a smaller amount, but it also reduces transaction fees by requiring the buckets to be a little bit bigger before they fall.

Also, the house fee promotion is almost running out! After tomorrow, I will raise the house fee to 1%. But this shouldn't make a very noticeable difference. (The house fee was 3% before the promotion. That was a big difference!)

I noticed the amount that is sent to the backers of the bucket that fell is less than the non-standard amount of 0.00005430.  It causes the whole transaction to take a long time to get into a block and confirm.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I'm attempting to fix this by raising the amount that gets returned to 2%. (This doesn't increase the house fee ... it just means that losers won't lose so much of their money, and winners will win a little less.) We'll see if this improves the confirmation times.

Not quite. The server is still running, and it reflects the current bucket values accurately.

What has happened is that the latest "bucket falling" transaction accidentally got a small transaction fee due to a floating point rounding error. So it is taking a long time to propagate and be known to the entire network -- and will take a while to confirm. That's why blockchain.info doesn't correctly report the value of the bucket: it hasn't seen the latest transaction.

I've bumped the transaction fees to 101% of their old value (a miniscule difference) in order to prevent this from happening again. But right now, all we can do is wait.

Sorry about this! On the upside, every problem we encounter and resolve brings us closer and closer to a system without any problems.

Correction: This has happened twice in the last day. That's why the blockchain.info Rbucket address shows 0.05, when the current value is really 0.00.

Ok, glad you are fixing the issues as they come up!  I really like this game, although the buckets haven't liked me too much recently.

you shouldn't be doing any maths with floats - convert everything to integer before you do any calculations ( $satoshis = floor(bcmul($float,100000000)) )

That's a really good point! I think I've learned my lesson there. I'll rewrite the server code to work with satoshis directly, when I get the chance.

First day giveaway results coming right up!

(PS: The missing red bucket transactions haven't yet been propagated by the network, as I had hoped they would. If it takes another day, I will reimburse the backers directly. In either case, those buckets aren't being counted in the giveaway. They'll be counted when their transaction gets confirmed.)

FIRST GIVEAWAY DAY RESULTS!

There were 13 fallen buckets on June 11, 2013, in the GMT time zone. In total, there were 68 entries in the giveaway. The last block hash of any fallen bucket was 00000000000000c3201f1711f70ef1560aa987be5a797bd42a702c09312200c6, which, when divided by 68, gives us a remainder of 10. That means the 11th entry wins.

So who was the winner?

CONGRATULATIONS 13ExrYxnpaSKbVVXFLuX5kYPXSWBr6L6yf, YOU WIN 0.1 BTC!

Here's the proof that I've sent the 0.1 BTC. (https://blockchain.info/tx/07c57e96bf21892765de67db467e3ae80b94105eaeb3344c7026dcc276b25f7d)

They should. Did you only play in the red bucket? There's two outstanding red bucket falling transactions that haven't been included in this giveaway. (They'll be included once they are confirmed.)

No, betting in multiple buckets is totally fine nowadays.

A little bit of math about the giveaway:

There were 68 entries yesterday. Each 0.005 BTC bet was worth about 2.5 entries on average. Each 0.005 BTC bet gave you around 4% chance to win the giveaway. That means that each 0.005 BTC bet gives you 4% chance to earn 0.1 BTC -- that's 0.004 BTC expected value -- beyond what you already earn from playing Satoshi Buckets.

IN OTHER WORDS, minimum bets are about 80% cheaper thanks to the giveaway. The expected return of a minimum bet is much more than 100%!

Someone decided to test Satoshi Buckets with huge bets. As a result, there was a round with R=0.125, G=0.19, B=0.15. That was the biggest round yet! (Green fell.) Thank you anonymous tester!

If things like this happen more often, I'll raise the minimum round threshold to 0.05 BTC per bucket, to prevent people from winning a large bucket with a much, much smaller bet amount. (This would once again also reduce back and forth transaction fees.)

No buckets seem to have fallen for around 16 hours now. Is this just due to the lack of btc being pumped into the buckets?

Yes. The buckets only fall when there is enough to get them activated. After this it waits for the next BTC block for generating which bucket should drop.

Actually, red fell about 8 hours ago. I still have a little bit going in the green bucket. Maybe I should stop watching it...

Hmm, in that case maybe I'm confused as to how it works. I was of the impression that if I had coins in red, I would receive transactions from red bucket every time a green or blue bucket fell, and when the red bucket fell, I would receive a 0.00000101 transaction to indicate that it's gone.

However, looking at the address history here (https://blockchain.info/address/1RbucktdB7agZuX1qdjce4PYbURRaezc7?filter=1), I can see that I've just fallen off the transactions:

My understanding is, that with the next red bucket transaction (2013-06-13 18:25:20), I would have received either a further payment, or a token small payment to indicate that the bucket has fallen. However, I've had no further red bucket transactions after the 15:54:33 one.

Am I misunderstanding the game mechanics here?

Am I misunderstanding the game mechanics here?

thisisgil: Let me look into it, and I'll get right back to you.

But first... giveaway results are ready!

THIRD GIVEAWAY DAY RESULTS!

This time I went with a slightly different method of selecting the winner, which is a lot easier to administer manually and less error prone. (It also slightly benefits people who enter in smaller rounds over larger rounds. Sorry, but I do think the simplification is worth it.) Essentially, the block hash is now used to pick the winning transaction, and then to select an entry at random from it.

So, the last considered block was 00000000000000e9e6d637cadd9059c0ab1cf11175b8f25722ad00270fd01265. This selects the 19th transaction, 5fda6b83c423cad6fdf692937bc5033bd06fa0cc613120fd88a3ce628287008e, and the first entry from that transaction.

CONGRATULATIONS 1BdHQJKjQBn3eKpLWBNNw9kqURrPDRopeY, YOU WIN 0.1 BTC!

You almost have it right. You don't receive transactions from the red bucket necessarily -- the transactions come from all three buckets.

If you look at the history,

http://blockchain.info/address/14dD2jzPSpY4kzVacPbVThk187MCupwLCu

You'll see that there's transactions from all three buckets. Since you bet in all three buckets, you only really got a small "signal" transaction when the last bucket fell: http://blockchain.info/tx/2d5dae7f916efd99c488980c92bb354c208259a1e2d62b1fa30f6c0fd5a66e16

So everything seems to be in working order.

(The only thing that is a littly fishy right now is that the green bucket transaction is taking a long time to confirm. This is caused by too small a transaction fee -- but it's not quite as bad as a few days ago.)

Yes, I think that's how it goes, but it seems that you received a small amount from the green bucket as it fell 5 mins after your last payment from red, which means that you had no running bets at 18:25.

I started throwing btc at the buckets on the train yesterday to satiate my boredom, and think that I ended up with bets in all three buckets at one point.

Green appeared to fall as per your transaction above, however, this would mean that I still had funds in the red bucket until it fell later, but received no further red bucket transactions or red bucket-fall notification amount. I also had one transaction back from blue bucket and then no further transactions or notification that it had fallen.

If anyone could help me understand this, it would be much appreciated :)

Okay, thanks this helps clear it up a bit.

Perhaps you could consider making so that you receive payouts from the address of whatever bucket you still have funds in? It would seem much more intuitive that way. So for example:

Joe  has coins in red, blue and green. Green falls. Joe receives the following transactions:

Green - the token 0.000001 or whatever
Red - the red bucket share of green's funds
Blue - the blue bucket share of green's funds

Next round, assuming Joe didn't reinvest and Red then fell, Joe would receive:

Green - nothing
Red - the token 0.0000001
Blue - the blue bucket share of red's funds

Does that make sense? I think if you manged it that way, it would make things a lot clearer for multi-bucket players!

How many confirmations to get into a bucket? 1? 2? 3?

Sorry, but that wouldn't work. The transactions have to come from the fallen buckets: it's just the way the bitcoin system is designed. Otherwise we would pay a lot more in transaction fees.

How many confirmations to get into a bucket? 1? 2? 3?

1 confirmation. As soon as all buckets have 0.025 BTC worth, all confirmed at least once, one of the buckets falls.

A history of the most recent transactions (only when a bucket falls) would be nice , complete with time, tx link and payments.

Thanks for the feedback! :-)

I'm planning to implement a history feature in a couple weeks, when I finally have time to sit down and do it. In the meanwhile, you can click on the bucket images to be taken to blockchain.info for each bucket. You can also download http://satoshibuckets.bitshy.org/live/history.csv, if you want to, which contains (very basic) information on each round / block.

Good question. I think maybe some type of chart that is broken down into hours (or even like 2 hour blocks) showing the payments input would help. Ex: 2PM: 5 (this would represent 2PM and there being 5 payments total). Doesn't even need to show the amounts. Just something to help visualize when the best time to hang out on the site is for gaming.

I am so sorry, everyone.

The site is still down. The server is still down. The host says there was a critical hardware failure -- the physical server machine has broken down. This was certainly not caused by Satoshi Buckets -- something more fundamental is at stake. Unfortunately, on my end, the only thing I can do is wait.

If this goes on much longer, I will repay all outstanding bets. Unfortunately, without access to the server, I cannot return individual transactions without returning all of them. Otherwise, if the situation is resolved soon, all of the bucket money will stay in the buckets and will be processed as normal when the service is up and running again. (Nothing was lost in the server crash. The Bitcoin network keeps track of every transaction.)

I hope the server comes back up in the next couple of days, but the server host hasn't given a timeline, and they haven't given me an update since Saturday.

Needless to say, the giveaway is suspended until the server is back up.

Here's an interesting scenario:

http://abload.de/img/buckets5ou8r.png

So at this point, no buckets will fall, because there is not enough money in red. However, nobody with any brains is going to drop coin into red as it has the highest chance of dropping and also the lowest long-term outlook.

Surely in this situation, the game should be offering up a carrot on a stick to encourage people to drop coins into red?

EDIT: Also -

Quote
When a bucket falls: 2% of its value is returned to its backers (to signal the fallen bucket), 1% of its value is donated to Bitshy Productions, a transaction fee is paid, and then the remaining value is split in half. Each half is divided equally among the supporters of the other two buckets.

Shouldn't it be like this:

1% Bitshy
2% Losers
5% Trans Fee (Est.)
92% Split proportionally amongst other bucket supporters. So for example, if 4 people are in for 0.005 and 1 person is in for 0.01, the person with 0.01 should get 33% of the 92% split and the other 4 people should each get 17% of the 92% split.

As it is at the moment, there is no incentive to bet anything higher than 0.005 in a bucket, which means that as people learn, you'll be missing out on an opportunity to encourage higher bets and by extension a higher rake back for bitshy! :)

Surely in this situation, the game should be offering up a carrot on a stick to encourage people to drop coins into red?

There are three reasons why you might still want to play in red in this situation:

- You might expect green or blue to get higher by the time red meets the threshold.
- You might be feeling lucky.
- There is a massive giveaway going on that means that playing in red is still a net positive even if it is originally a net negative. (Hey! That sounds familiar!)

Also, if I increased the bucket threshold to 0.05 BTC, it would be advantageous to place a minimum bet in green, in the analogous situation. Then the expected value of each bucket would change once again. So perhaps when we jump to the next Satoshi Buckets round threshold (which will happen some day, I'm pretty sure) that particular situation cannot occur. (Though similar situations probably still can.)

Quote
5% Trans Fee (Est.)

Right now the estimated transaction fee is actually 0.4%, often less.

Quote
92% Split proportionally amongst other bucket supporters.

Sorry, this is an error with my description of the game! The reward is proportional to the amount of money you put in! Otherwise there really would be no incentive to bet more than 0.005.

I updated the description on the site.

[EDIT: I edited this post to add more thoughts.]

If we discount 3 as it's only a temporary thing, I'm not sure that someone trying to develop a strategy would rely on luck, which means we can rule out 2. Therefore, we're left with 1: "You might expect green or blue to get higher...." and I honestly don't think that's enough of an incentive to drop into red. Perhaps consider throwing a lifeline into play? Something like if you go in on red and the total of the red bucket is 33% or greater of the three buckets, then you have a 1 in 10 chance to get thrown a lifeline - ie your money stays in red bucket (minus your 1% bitshy rake of course). This gives the player an incentive to back the red bucket AND lures players away from green and blue because there's a 1 in 5 chance they won't get the winnings from red falling. I dunno. Maybe that's overcomplicating it and stupid.

5% Trans Fee (Est.)

Right now the estimated transaction fee is actually 0.4%, often less.

Yup - I was just throwing a number out there for the sake of illustration - didn't have the inclination to figure out the exact %! :)

Sorry, this is an error with my description of the game! The reward is proportional to the amount of money you put in! Otherwise there really would be no incentive to bet more than 0.005.

I updated the description on the site.

Good stuff! :)

Coming up: fourth giveaway results. But first, an announcement.

ANN: The bucket minimum per round has been increased to 0.05 BTC.

This will result in smaller transaction fees, and more fluidity (since the minimum bet is now one tenth of the round minimum). This change was instituted at a time when the red bucket had 0 BTC and the green and blue buckets had 0.05 BTC, so nobody was negatively affected. (The expected value of the red bucket went down, but nobody was betting there. The expected values of the green and blue buckets went up.)

FOURTH GIVEAWAY RESULTS

This time, we considered transactions from 14th to the 18th, since there was an interruption of service. There were 33 transactions considered. The last block hash was , so the 22nd transaction was picked, and the 3rd entry from that transaction is the winner.

So ...

I don't know. I came up with the idea, but maybe it already exists going way back? Or maybe only with the invention of Bitcoin is such a betting game feasible.

bitcoind crashed. It's up again, now. Let it be said ... bitcoind is not the most stable software.

As for the effect of the 0.05 BTC buckets... let's try it out for a while longer. If it turns out to have been a bad idea, I'll revert it. But in the meantime, let's try it out.

Giveaway results coming right up.

GIVEAWAY DAY #5:

This time there were 19 transactions considered. This is less than the previous days. This is a result of the downtimes, the middle of the week, and the new bucket round minimum. But this sort of means that everyone who participated had a better chance of winning!

Title: Re: Satoshi Buckets - A game with a winning strategy! 1 BTC GIVEAWAY, 0.4 BTC LEFT.
Post by: bitshy on June 21, 2013, 02:52:16 PM
Thisisgil, I'm trying something a little bit different. This time, the buckets all have different thresholds: red has BTC0.04, green has BTC0.05, and blue has BTC0.065. This should balance the game -- there shouldn't be long periods with red at BTC0, because the expected minimum value for each bucket is very close.

That is, 42% of 0.04 is very close to 33% of 0.05, which is very close to 25% of 0.065.

To make the numbers nice and round, I would prefer to set the thresholds at: red = 0.05, green = 0.06, blue = 0.08. This would be a nice simplification to make. But let it be as it is for now. We'll see how this goes.

Folks, let me know what you think. Thanks for playing!

I think that the previous change was unsuccessful, so I reverted it. It changed the flavor of the game too much, and made the rules more complicated. So now we're back at 0.05 BTC rounds.

Also, real life has kept me _way_ too busy, and it doesn't seem like it's going to stop very soon. I did not post giveaway results yesterday. Yesterday (after the change) there were only five rounds. So I will hold off on the giveaway another day.

Ah! There was a brief moment where I messed up the reversion to 0.05 BTC. Rounds weren't triggering. It should be working fine now, however. Bucket away!

GIVEAWAY RESULTS #7!

Due to a lower transaction volume, I clumped together the last two days with giveaway day #7. This gives 28 transactions, which is around the same volume as the previous giveaways -- so I don't think anyone has really been hurt. This means that the giveaway can last a bit longer, too.

So, having said that....
