Hey there - I'm currently the lead of the dev team for ChanCoin - the much-maligned and often-doxxed Gossamer Socks. Since the project began in August, I've spent most of my time primarily as a community manager and project coordinator - although I'd initially hoped to fill the role of platform API developer and infrastructure engineer.

I wanted to take the time to make a post to outline 1) the project's current status, 2) The actual history of the coin, in broad strokes 3) my current priorities and those for the immediate future. Not in that order, necessarily.

A Brief History of ChanCoin and the Forkageddon

ChanCoin was started by a pseudonymous channer from Australia who went by the name CHANCOIN. He posted an ANN thread and a thread on 4chan's /biz/ which garnered some hype - quickly the discord linked to from the post was full of users, people were downloading the wallet and CPU mining. It took some time before it was determined that the coin had a 30% pre-mine - 9 million out of a total 30 million coins. The founder claimed this would go towards development, and did indeed hand out coins liberally to the first few people to 'join the dev team'. The details of this period will be covered more deeply in a post-mortem on the Forkageddon which will be written as times allows and will include (hopefully) forensic analysis of the old and new blockchains. I should also mention that at this time, the founder 'accidentally' sent 500,000 coins to a random person. This person became known as 'the stranger' over time.

Several qualified developers joined the team - most were given some number of coins after joining. Airdrops occurred daily in the discord and a functional userscript allowed users to tip one another for posts on 4chan. The founder worked quickly to get us onto multiple exchanges, however he was generally unavailable to discuss anything with the development team.

Fast forward about a month. Due to community feedback, 1/3 of the pre-mine (3 million coins) have been verifiably burned. The dev team and community agree that an additional 3 million should be burned and that the remaining coins be kept in a multi-sig and used for community projects and developer remuneration. At this point, devs became suspicious, as the founder (who by now was going by the name 'Andy') claimed to have only 1.2 million coins. The devs knew this to be untrue based on the number of pre-mine coins which had been distributed to them.

At about the same time, prominent community members began to notice unusual activity on the blockchain - someone was moving large amounts of coins from wallet to wallet, seemingly in an attempt to manually tumble them. When Andy was asked about this by one community member, he said he was 'testing' wallet upgrades. But who tests wallet upgrades by sending 1.2 million coins on the main net from one wallet to three others in chuns of 400k each?

The developers met with the aforementioned community members and decided unanimously to fork the coin, freezing Andy's funds so that he could not dump them, wiping out the value of countless people's portfolios.

We worked for several days to update the wallet, adding in a list of unspent transaction outputs which we knew to be Andy's. We modified the wallet so that these coins were 'frozen' and would not be valid for use in transactions. We then emailed the exchanges with background on the situation, asking them to immediately halt trading and to update their wallets.

It took exchanges time on the order of weeks to cease trading. During this time, Andy was able to apply massive hashing power to the old chain to catch up to the new chain and surpass it - and since the exchanges were still running the old wallet, he could then dump as many funds as he liked into exchange wallets, where there was nothing anyone could do to prevent him from dumping them. And dump them he did.

Subsequent to this he did reach out and give us control over a few accounts holding a little more than 1.2 million coins. Thanks to this, we have been able to remunerate the losses suffered by his double-spending of coins. Cryptopia's remuneration is complete, and we are currently working with Nova Exchange to ensure that all user coins are accounted for.

Current Status

As I mentioned, we are still working with nova to resume trading and remunerate them for coins lost. Beyond this, a couple of my next priorities for this project include:

• Adding a dedicated testnet to the chancoin.org domain and (later on) providing a Docker container which can be used to develop against the testnet
• Adding sections to our website for community procedures and standards, as well as a section for contributors on getting started
• The aforementioned post-mortem

Recently we've had some really cool projects come to light - a dubs bot for threads on 4chan's /biz/ board, a tipping bot for use in our discord and a packaged chrome extension which allows users to tip using CHAN on 4chan. This extension is compatible with 4ChanX. I'll let the creators of those projects describe them more fully here and in other relevant documentation.

Please let us know if there are questions - a lot of insane nonsensical FUD has been spread about this project, and I myself have been harassed in meatspace a great deal.  I will close with a message to the troglodytes who've been maligning me of late, courtesy of good old Rudyard Kipling...

As a long time member of the ChanCoin community I can verify gossamer sock's story and vouch for his good character. It baffles me that there are people who knows the truth of this who would take time out of their day to create internet aliases and tell lies aimed at hurting gossamer's reputation and the ChanCoin project.

All community in DISCORD, is CRAZY and fantastic. I enjoy all. You can make profits with this coin, but you can also have different joy in cryptotrading. :FUN.

So what about the people who bought those dumped coins, which are deleted in the fork? They are in the exchanges now, unless they get reimbursed, the users won't see the coins that they paid for.

Remember, only altcoins with active devs go to the moon! Chancoin damaged too much with excessive dump, DEV team spent their nearly all premine to rescue traders in Cryptopia and Nova (still ongoing), even in this shitty situation and under Andy's heavy manipulation they work on coin development.

Stick with 4CHN, it will be much more better.

Well, you can but it will not give you any coin... You should use at least one good GPU. But 4CHN is a scrypt coin. Thats why they best option is ASIC miner.

Update on Exchanges

We're still working with Nova Exchange, whose support staff have been very professional. We're currently waiting on a large transfer out of Cryptopia into Nova which has been delayed - Cryptopia's support is on the case. Once that transfer is done we'll fill in the last bit with one or two more transactions to get their wallet's balance squared away. I hope this'll happen this week, but it's all up to Cryptopia really.

TradeSatoshi has abruptly de-listed us without giving customers any chance to withdraw coins - I've addressed this issue to them directly on their discord server and am currently awaiting a reply. I just learned today about the de-listing - I've been waiting for a reply to an e-mail from them since 8/22, shortly after Cryptopia re-opened (and long after TradeSatoshi had stopped responding to my support ticket about the hard fork). Our wallet developer is working on some new features, including DGW. I've been fiddling with some more discord bot stuff and the PoC for the third party API/wallet stuff - but obviously that's taken a backseat to fixing exchangeageddon.

Update on TradeSatoshi

I have to apologize to TradeSatoshi's admin Kim for being a rude asshole - both here and on their discord. I found my way to their discord earlier this evening thanks to our community member alexgreen, and after going off on their admin, we worked out that it was a communication breakdown - he may not have received all the emails I sent. I wanted to extend my apologies here as well for the public record.

On the upside, we are now actively working with Tradesatoshi to restore any missing coins and reopen trade.

This project is intended to be a currency by and for the users of imageboards online - 4chan, 8ch, meguca, lainchan - there are tons of chans, I'm just listing the ones I can think of immediately. The project is intended as a way for imageboard users to get into crypto generally and crypto development specifically. Our roadmap shows some of our goals with respect to use cases.

In other news, we've got a CPUMiner implementation of our new algo finished, are working on a stratum implementation, and we're clarifying what updates outside of the new algo and KGW/DGW we want before we do a major update/hardfork.

We'll also be moving the announce thread soon to a new one controlled by a third-party 'chancoin' account - so that its not tied to any specific user.

Just a tiny update - we're still hoping to shore up the 0.15 release (which will bring parity feature-wise with Litecoin 0.15 as well as a new hash algo we're calling Cloverhash) before the year's end. I've been behind various aborted projects such as our own mining pool, and am currently working on coinhive integration that pays out in chans.

Theres other nascent projects in the works, but as things slow down for the holidays (at least in the US), please bear with us if we fall behind on a few things. The project is still very much alive, and we'd still very much love to talk to you on our discord server.

from what I can understand the .15 wallet is very close but there are a host of other changes and not just a wallet upgrade.

I have faith in the developer that they know what they are doing.

Marketing and PR push not as structured (at least in terms of what has been published) however, it will sell itself via 4chan and big community.

keep in mind that as per the first post, more coin burns are expected, they have not said how big they will be, they could be big, they could be small - the current trend from recent burns is the former, not the latter.

30million total possible coins, they already burnt 3million so 27million.

7 Million in circulation leaves 20 million left to mine. They could burn 10million coins and still have 10m left to mine. It is not easy to mine these coins either you will need a CPU (GPU coming later I understand) no ASIC mining.

Those who have been dumping large bags of these onto the exchanges are about to realise they made a mistake IMHO.

Gossamer has really turned this thing around and the sails have been set.  The ideas are open to expansion and from the looks of other meme-centered coins the marketcap could go sky high.  A well marketed "imageboard" coin could almost trample all coins before it(Doge, pepecash etc.)  After the wallet upgrade comes out alot of naysayers will pretend to have heard it for the first time and wanna jump on board and mine it.  A good timelines is ahead of us.

@everyone Just a small update on wallet progress - Name and I have identified broken tests and are working through them - that takes time, but i'm also spending time today rebooting our testnet and walking through manual regression and integration testing. The fact is your network is fucked and the user MEMELORD told you all this would happen and was banned for "fud" when it was truth. One thing I do know is that we all have the same goal here.  Chancoin has some devout fans and all are gunning for the Moon.  Gossamer, the BEEF says do your thing.  The femmebot is constantly making memes and is gathering a large Chancoin following as well.  Alot of work is actually being done that is under the radar and when the wallet update is complete and Cloverhash is instated all will see what is inside the great Chancoin egg.  Molly is an avid concerner.  I think alot of people in this community need to chill out and not take things personal.  The past is dead and a new stronger Chancoin is here.  The memes are certainly stronger as well.  CHANCOIN 2018 mf'ers.

In order to avoid Discord and community splitting you should find a perfect place for the most avid supporters within the official Discord. You are the leader and you have to decide what each volunteer does and find a perfect place for it.

I don't speak for dev-team however dev-team have been posting update every couple of days since the start of the holidays regarding 0.15 progress.

It appears that 0.15 at the moment does include the new cloverhash miner and a basic build of 0.15 has been completed and is in testing on their testnet. It appears to be compiling ok and now its a case of tweaking and testing until they have a release candidate.

Just a reminder that the coin is currently price at approx 5 cents (U.S) and has circulating supply of 7m. Market cap is $380k USD and coin will be easily mineable. Reddcoin price is 1 cent and has supply of almost 28 billion. It is not mineable. Market cap is $400m USD. Just encourage goss to fix the network! Thats it!! Once the coin has a solid network it has a solid foundation! After that the coin can go beyond the moon! At this moment that can not happen! The longer the network problem goes unfixed the worse it will get.My wishes are not for the coin to burn thats stupid when its a easy fix. Looks like we gave all got on Gosses butt enough that he understands a strong stable network is the most important step to having a successful coin. The rest is easy. The coin has been hampered by no wallet, the market cap is extremely low (under 500,000).

The community is ridiculously huge and active. I checked the discord and over 180 users online and many active. There are so many community marketers ready to make memes and spread the word

4Chan as a website has a huge crypto trading audience.

There are more than 1 developer and constant Github updates. The lead is very active and seems very dedicated.

The wallet problem is not impossible to overcome, it looks like it will be solved rather soon actually.

The fundamentals says as soon as there is a new wallet, there will be more confidence and much of the userboard will get back in.

In my opinion this coin is one of the best investments for a 'micro' coin right now.[/li][/list]

Today's (un-official) Dev update.

After a mammoth development session yesterday, all major bugs appear to have been squashed for 0.15.

Windows build is now compiled with the updated code and other builds will follow today once the devs have got some well earned rest.

On this basis I would estimate that the exchanges will be contacted in the next 24 hours to start updating their wallets and a formal announcement will go out in due course.

The next date for diaries is the 14th February. This is the timed date for Cloverhash (the ASIC resistant hash algo) to go live on the Chancoin block-chain.

This date is hard-coded in the 0.15 Wallet release.

Cloverhash will also activate if block 30k is reached sooner, as we are at block 22,226 it is highly un-likely that block 30k will be reached before the deadline of 14th February.

An OS X build of the latest wallet has been released today for download from the above repo.

Cryptopia has completed the 0.15.4 upgrade! Phew! Thats always the most stressful bit for me. I'm following up with Tradesatoshi. Remember, don't use novaexchange, they're closing anyhow so no need to update them, and we warned everyone to get their coins out ages ago.

Now is _definitely_ the time to upgrade to 0.15.4 if you're still running an older version. At block 23500 we should see difficulty adjustment start to function normally...finally.

Is there a problem with the chain/network/whatever?  The explorer isn't working and my wallet has been stuck at "Syncing Headers (99.5%)" for the past ~10 hours.

Or am I missing something?

The chain is just very slow, make sure you are using latest wallet version. Mine takes hours to sync.

This problem will be fixed 2nd week in February as detailed above.

I had it connected and running all day yesterday.  Does it just update once every 24 hours or so?  I have plenty of connections, but no updates during the day.  The explorer doesn't even update.  But, upon checking it in the morning it shows new blocks.

Are you running 0.15.4 ? If so, this issue should be alleviated when a block is found. The issue as I understand it is that since a block hasn't been found recently enough, the client thinks that there are missing headers when in reality the latest block is just 'behind schedule'. If not, upgrade and let us know whether this helps.

Yep.  0.15.4 is the only one I could find easily--it was right on the website. 

The thing is, though, yesterday morning I woke up with the explorer at 23205 and went to bed with it at the same position.  This morning, I woke up to it at 23330.  There are plenty of blocks with timestamps all through the day between the timestamps of block 23205 and 23330.  In fact, the time between block 23205 and 23206 is ~4 hours but I didn't see that until this morning.  The explorer has been stuck at 23330 all day today as well.

 :-\ Hrm - well, deleting your blockchain database and re-syncing _might_ solve the issue, but let me bring this to the attention of the wallet devs to make sure I don't put my foot in my mouth here.

I'm not so much concerned about my desktop wallet (it'll sync when it syncs).  But when the actual explorer website is stuck on the same block (like right now it's been stuck at 23330 for well over 24 hours) I get a little concerned.

We are currently at block 23,429. At block 23,500 the difficulty change kicks-in and the Chancoin block-chain should, in theory, go back to normal operation which means that wallet sync., transfers and mining normalise.

With only a couple of blocks a day covered, 71 blocks will feel like an eternity.  Someone had an L3 (or something like it) running the other day and difficulty shot up from ~1k to 6k with only a few blocks mined over the course of 4 days.

In a brief but very detailed interview I spoke with the $Chancoin Project Leader working on $Chan development, it was said that there are many projects in the works. That being said I will give some examples of what is being planned for the near future and what is being planned for long term goals.

In the nearest future a change to 0.15 will succeed in upgrading and once again $Chancoin will take the front seat, however after the upgrade and Cloverhash creation the Project Leader stated that after the upgrade, eyes will be glued on difficulty to ensure a second update isn't needed to allow for everything to run smoothly. After the upgrade, it was also mentioned that there would potentially be some more projects in the distant future that include colored-coin which allows for collectibles based on the $Chan upgrades.

But that isn't all, I was also informed by the Project Lead that a new web and roadmap redesign including a Chancoin.org account system and developer API upgrade is also in the works.

The conclusion here in the developmental section is one that keeps my heart light, as I hear so many good things coming to $Chancoin and for Cloverhash upgrade in 2018, and I certainly look forward to hearing more from the $Chan development team.

So in a few hours (at Midnight on February 14th, UTC) Chancoin will switch to its new PoW algorithm, Cloverhash!

At present we have a cpuminer fork with cloverhash (aka nightcap) implemented available at https://github.com/chancoin-core/cpuminer-multi - branch 'linux'

At present, compiling for windows is left as an exercise to the reader - a windows binary is forthcoming, as is a stratum implementation and a GPU miner. Oh, and a whitepaper.

I know, I know, blah blah blah - the author of the algo, Name - yes his name is Name - is very busy right now and our policy is that our devs well-being comes first, so deal with it.

Download cpuminer here: https://github.com/chancoin-core/cpuminer-multi (go to releases for prebuilt binary or build branch 'linux')
Download latest Chancoin wallet here:  https://github.com/chancoin-core/chancoin (again, go to releases)
Create an empty configuration file at ~/.chancoin/chancoin.conf
Edit the configuration file, here’s the template, fill accordingly:

rpcuser=yourusername
rpcpassword=yourpassword
rpcallowip=127.0.0.1
server=1
addnode=fnord
addnode=blah
addnode=whatever
addnode=twinklehouse

Add as many nodes as you can, change user and password, save. See thread for nodes.

Okie-dokie - since its getting late here, here's the game plan -
Name and Barry will continue to troubleshoot to see whether a consensus on a cause/fix can be reached - at the latest, tomorrow evening US time (tomorrow morning BarryTime) we will make a decision to either apply a fix to cloverhash OR to do evasive maneuvers and patch in another algorithm
I would estimate about two weeks to get a wallet update out on cryptopia, so that plus development time (which should be relatively short for patching in a known working algo) would be plausible given the parameters of our chain presently.

I will announce further updates here (in announcements) and on bitcointalk as the situation changes

An update regarding the algo switch to Cloverhash -

Thanks to multipools mining Chancoin before the algo switch, the difficulty at midnight UTC on the 14th was above 3k - meaning it'll take a pretty significant amount of CPU power to find the first Cloverhash block. We're working on an sgminer implementation and several devs have come forward and offered to assist - there is currently a 7500 CHAN bounty on a complete GPU miner implementation of Clovehash, open-sourced on our github org. Should multiple people work together to make one (which looks likely) we'll do our best to make sure rewards are distributed equitably among those who contributed - but I can't promise 7.5k CHAN to an unknown number of people :^^^^)

Anyhow, we're currently trying to crack the first block - there may be some issues with the current cpuminer implementation as well - I'll let Name 1856 - who is our head wallet developer - go into details as his time allows.

Cloverhash is Live!

Thanks to the hard work of several community contributors, we have finally got Cloverhash live on mainnet! Block times are now pretty damn fast. Our contributor MangoFusion is working on a GPU implementation, but for now use the instructions in the post above (thank u for posting that, btw) to get started mining, or pop on down to the chancoin discord - linked to in the first post of this thread - for help.

Now that the massive 0.15 update is FINALLY done and rolled out, we will be taking a few days to catch our breath before announcing next steps and priorities, but here's a sneak peak: new website design, updated roadmap, paying down technical debt on our codebase and finally getting down to work on some of the end-user applications we've envisioned for the coin, such as our own crypto-enabled image board.

Chancoin to 500X to 1000X

I recently discovered Chancoin ($CHAN/$4CHN), an off-the-radar coin that I think its seriously undervalued and I see no reason why it can't do a 500x or even 1000x (I'm serious) based on competitor coin market caps.

I realize this post so far has sounded very scammy but below I lay out fundamental reasons for my valuation.

Use Case In simplest terms, Chancoin wants to allow meme creators to be credited each time their original content get's shared. This means that when you, the memelord, create a dank ass meme or 4chan and it makes its way to Instagram, you're getting credited for each share that it took to get from 4chan to Instagram. Chancoin does this now by posting your Chancoin public key for tipping but ultimately will implement steganographic technology.

In this way Chancoin is like Dogecoin, Reddcoin and Monacoin, coins that are used to incentivize, reward and promote content creation, each geared toward a specific type of audience.

Development Chancoin was a fork of Litecoin and has four active developers led by Gossamer Socks. The developers recently implemented an upgrade to the protocol called Cloverhash that allows for CPU mining and will allow for GPU mining in the near future. Progress is happening extremely quickly.

Community Chancoin is active on Bitcointalk, Discord, Trello and Twitter. There are two Discords, both with hundreds (yes) of contributors. The developer Discord tracks Chancoin's progress. The other Discord, called Chancoin City, has an endless supply of Chancoin-inspired memes. The community around Chancoin is tangible

Valuation Chancoin's market cap is approx $200k and has 7.5m coins. Based on Chancoin's 4chan origin alone I think this means it is insanely undervalued. And based on the market caps of competitor coins like Dogecoin, Monacoin and Reddcoin, I am of the firm belief than Chancoin can do a 500x to 1000x.

And that's my case for Chancoin

Agree. Very undervalued

Take a look at CHAN's market cap and BTC's If CHAN became as popular and adopted as BTC then your 2 cent CHAN would be worth over $30,000 or 1,000,000 times its current value but you can't really beat such an old innovative crypto with such heavy adoption as BTC that easily.

If you look on coinmarketcap.com then just looking at the top 100 you notice Dogecoin somewhere around #38, an inflationary meme coin with little to no adoption or use other than for the sake of trading and joking about, below that are many more meme coins and shitcoins that don't have any major redeeming factors. CHAN is a crypto currency that supports content creators on 4chan and has a dedicated dev team working towards improving it and adding new features and while they're going through a bit of a rocky start this cryptocurrency easily has the potential to at least move to top 200 and quite likely top 100.

Looking at the circulating supply and market cap of the #100-200 coins and you can see that if CHAN made it that high it would easily be 500X its current value. I think this is certainly achievable with enough adoption of the coin which is why I'm urging you now.

I agree.  Most coins are in slumber mode until BTC breaks the bear period.  It'll probably hit 4k and stay around there and then start going up again in 2019.  Great times ahead.  Now if Gossamer would actually update the ANN thread and stop playing twitch porn that'd be greaaaaaat.

approximately how much time cryptopia may take to begin trading again,I have purchased Chan yesterday at 13 sats, what will be affect on price of the token?

After attempting to remediate with Cryptopia for over a week, we've released a new update:

This will rewind the chain to before the attack. Cryptopia will end up delisting us, although they haven't given us the specifics of the timeline and any plans for remediating losses due to the double-spend attack - they've been radio silent for a week. I'll try to keep everyone apprised of any updates.

In the meantime, update your clients, and invalidate the block where the attack began by running `./chancoin-cli invalidateblock 56de2e104e949bedd0b9339fb92966b0db1d51a4a723c76c198e36fbac18ee21` in the debug console.
